Come and take them!

Some days, I really think the organized Christian right should take some of their big bags of money and spend just a little of it doing some background research on the historical analogies they use to describe themselves.

A description of what’s in this video, which is a bunch of leaders associated with the Family Research Council, which has been singled out as a hate group by the SPLC for its anti-gay stance:

Perkins explains the absolute necessity of getting Christians into all levels of government while Boykin compared Christians today to the Spartan army and quoted King Leonidas by declaring “molon labe” [“come and get them”] when he and his army were told to lay down their weapons.

Likewise, Boykin declared “molon labe,” stating that he will not be silenced and challenged those in Washington who are out to take his liberties, rob his grandchildren, and destroy America to just try to take them from him.

Finally, Joyner announced that Christians have more than enough people to take control, but they need to bind together and, as such, would soon be unveiling coalition called “300”.

Well, clearly that movie about the Spartans pulling an Alamo against the Persian army made quite the impression on these fuckwits.  Look. I find it hard to blame them.  Look at Gerard Butler in his King Leonidas costume:

Still, for such an band of homophobes pushing an anti-gay agenda, I think they may have thought to do a little more background research on the ancient Spartan army that fought the actual Battle of Thermopylae.  I realize the movie “300” is horribly homophobic, and the gap between that and the realities of the Spartan army was noted by not a few pro-gay writers when the movie came out.  Like Richard Burnett:

Except real-life Spartan warriors made up the fiercest gay and bisexual army in human history. Sparta demanded its warriors sexually love one another so that they would also fight for each other to the death.

Obviously, the Spartan military wasn’t “gay” or even “homosexual” in the modern sense of the word.  Ancient Greeks just had really different sexual mores than modern people do, and certainly the same-sex relationships in Greece don’t resemble the love-among-equals standard that is both law and custom for straight and gay in the United States now.  But dudes were nonetheless touching penises, and you’d think that Tony Perkins and company would perhaps not want to associate themselves with that.

Or maybe not.  After all, it was just recently that one of the prominent members of Perkins’ group the FRC was caught having a little Spartan holiday of his own, having hired a male prostitute to travel with him in Europe.  And of course, you have Ted Haggard before him, and really, a much too long list to go into of “family values” conservatives caught up in sex scandals, frequently involving same-sex relations.

This sort of history would make me think a lot more carefully about what historical analogies I want to invoke.  But then again, maybe Tony Perkins and company agree with Bucky Bright on “30 Rock”:

Men were men back then. If you wanted to do something private with another man, it wasn’t gay. No. It was just two men, celebrating each other’s strength.

NOM’s Maggie Gallagher whines: don’t blame me for gay teen suicides

Call the Waaaambulance for the NOM-ster. Actually, Maggie, I haven’t been thinking about you much at all, since that summer NOM bus tour was such a raging failure that I dropped you and perpetual flop-sweating Brian Brown down onto my third-tier list of homophobes along with The Peter and Ken Hutcherson. But if you want me to point some fingers at bigots who have helped create a climate of discrimination that reinforces young LGBTs that they are not equal in the eyes of the law, I’ll be happy to do so. (NYP):

Do I have blood on my hands?

Major gay-rights groups are saying so. Each of us who opposes gay marriage, they say, is responsible for the terrible and tragic suicides of gay teens that recently hit the news.

San Francisco just filed a brief in the Prop 8 case, saying 7 million Californians who voted to protect marriage as the union of one man and one woman are responsible for high rates of suicide among gay people.

Evan Wolfson, one of the leading architects of the gay marriage movement, calls me out personally: “National Organization for Marriage Chairman Maggie Gallagher is among those who, with reckless disregard, attacks LGBT youth.”

Former Clinton adviser Richard Socarides told the AP these suicides demonstrate why gays should be allowed to marry: “When you speak out for full equality now, as opposed to partial equality, or incremental equality, you send a message to everybody, including the bullies, that everyone is equal.”
Apparently, either we all agree that gay marriage is good or gay children will die.

It’s a horrific charge to levy in response to some pretty horrifying stories. Will gay marriage really reduce or prevent gay teen suicide? I felt a moral obligation to find out.

She then goes off on a tangent to discuss statistics about gay youth suicide, sexual intercourse, drug abuse and yes, bullying. Then she says this:

Forced sex, childhood sexual abuse, dating violence, early unwed pregnancy, substance abuse—could these be a more important factor in the increased suicide risk of LGBT high schoolers than anything people like me ever said?

Gallagher’s blind spot is mind-boggling. It clearly does not occur to her that adults—parents who hold views like hers send a clear message to their children about inequality—for LGBT kids, they hear intolerance, or experience abuse from homophobic parents. For other children, their parents’ homophobia gives them license to bully gay (or perceived to be gay/non-gender-conforming) kids. The bigotry trickles down. What people like Maggie Gallagher say to their children can translate into kids who seek to escape through drug abuse, casual or high-risk sex. And some of those kids see no way out—certainly no support system at home if NOM’s message is what’s delivered to them.

Discover the qualifications for FRC founder Dr. George Rekers’ travel assistant/luggage carrier

You know, when I travel these days, my fibromyalgia often makes it painful and difficult to lug around my bags. When the pain is really bad I sometimes wish I had a PHB assistant to help me out (when Kate’s not able to go with me). However, I never thought about going this route…

FRC founder and NARTH board member Dr. George Rekers must have a helluva travel expense budget (and tax write off) for procuring the talents of Geo, the identity of “Lucien,” known to most as a “Travel Assistant”/“luggage carrier” through the

recruiting service

he went through, Rentboy.com.

They have a rigorous training program for travel assistants at Rentboy:

I wonder why it doesn’t have any stats on number of bags Geo can carry, or whether he performs therapeutic massage for his john client to ensure the post-surgery Rekers has adequate comfort for physical recovery? Wait, I found additional information that closed the deal for Rekers.

Massage, good times, Travel, escort for days, nights and weekends, My name’s Geo. 20 year old, 5’9’‘, 130 pounds, 28’’ waist size,8x6” UNCUT, VERSATILE, NICE ASS. Family Research Council founder vacations with his rent boy, er, ‘Travel Assistant’

HomophobiaHypocritesSex

Ho, ho, ho, here we go…another professional anti-homo homosexual surfs for man-on-man vacation buddy. Miami New Times:

The pictures on the Rentboy.com profile show a shirtless young man with delicate features, guileless eyes, and sun-kissed, hairless skin. The profile touts his “smooth, sweet, tight ass” and “perfectly built 8 inch cock (uncut)” and explains he is “sensual,” “wild,” and “up for anything” — as long you ask first. And as long as you pay.

On April 13, the “rent boy” (whom we’ll call Lucien) arrived at Miami International Airport on Iberian Airlines Flight 6123, after a ten-day, fully subsidized trip to Europe. He was soon followed out of customs by an old man with an atavistic mustache and a desperate blond comb-over, pushing an overburdened baggage cart.

That man was George Alan Rekers, of North Miami — the callboy’s client and, as it happens, one of America’s most prominent anti-gay activists. Rekers, a Baptist minister who is a leading scholar for the Christian right, left the terminal with his gay escort, looking a bit discomfited when a picture of the two was snapped with a hot-pink digital camera.

...Yet Rekers wouldn’t deny he met his slender, blond escort at Rentboy.com — which features homepage images of men in bondage and grainy videos of crotch-rubbing twinks — and Lucien confirmed it.

And Rekers is not just the founder of the FRC, he’s on the board of therapize-away-the-gay org National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH). I guess he’s fallen off the wagon; but he’s earned a rep as a class-A homo-hater, according to friend of the Blend Wayne Besen.

“While he keeps a low public profile, his fingerprints are on almost every anti-gay effort to demean and dehumanize LGBT people,” says Wayne Besen, a gay rights advocate in New York City and the executive director of Truth Wins Out, which investigates the anti-gay movement. “His work is ubiquitously cited by lobby groups that work to deny equality to LGBT Americans. Rekers has caused a great deal of harm to gay and lesbian individuals.”

The New Times underscored that Rekers couldn’t have just casually come across “Lucian’s” profile. He would have had to sign up and agree to Rentboy.com’s terms of service then find his listing on the site.

As a favor to Rekers, Lucien recently removed any wanton sexual descriptors from his Rentboy profile. Though he does admit Rekers “likes younger guys to hang out with,” Lucien is protective of his erstwhile client. He describes Rekers primarily as a family man — one whose passion for oppressing homosexuals is dwarfed by his desire to help children. “You don’t understand how much this guy honestly cares about taking care of kids,” he says.

Rekers and the rent boy denied having sex; Rekers classifies their relationship in this manner:

“I’d like to propose another trip to Rome, Italy, for a week or more,” Rekers wrote in an email dated March 21 obtained by New Times. “This is so exciting to have a nice Travel Assistant and traveling companion! Wow! I’m so glad I met you.”

Stars on Ice sponsors deem Olympian Johnny Weir not “family friendly” enough to join tour

Is it me or has the world gotten even more hyperparanoid and confused about sexual orientation and gender expression? In what is both an absurd and incomprehensible decision, GLAAD reports that Stars on Ice sponsors are so concerned about the flamboyance of Olympic ice skater Johnny Weir (or is it his costumes?), that they don’t want him on the tour.

When was the last time male figure skaters and BUTCH coexisted in your mind? Why does it matter anyway? Are Dick and Jane going to be gender confused after a 90-minute ice show? I think these people have lost their minds.

GLAAD has learned from a source that wishes to remain anonymous that sponsors of the Stars on Ice Tour, which include Smuckers and IMG Entertainment, have refused to allow 3-time US National Champion and 2-time Olympian Johnny Weir to participate because they claim that he is “not family friendly.”

To say that Weir is “not family friendly” would be a clear jab at his perceived sexual orientation. Weir is extremely involved with his family. He is putting his younger brother through college, and supports the family financially because his father’s disability prohibits him from working. Weir’s dedication to his family can be clearly documented in the Sundance series, Be Good Johnny Weir, which follows him and his family and friends through his life and career as a championship skater.

Weir’s performance and costume style is sometimes considered flashier than those of other skaters, leading to questions about his perceived sexual orientation. While Weir has not officially announced his sexual orientation, he has garnered a significant amount of LGBT fans. He remains one of the most outspoken skaters today, and won an online poll asking fans “Who would you like to see guest star on Stars on Ice?”

Well that last point shows that the only paranoia exists in the minds of the sponsors. I’m not sure which aspect of Weir set off these alarms—is it the ornate and creative costumes? Over the years, the costumes of male figure skaters have become more free and flamboyant, regardless of the athlete’s real or perceived sexual orientation.

For instance I remember when the incredibly talented Rudy Galindo, the 1987 World Junior Champion and the 1996 U.S. National Champion—and was one of the first figure skaters that I recall coming out of the closet. Take a look at him from this short program at the ‘96 Worlds. I remember his flamboyance and oh-so-gey velvet costume were considered radical.

Now how tame was that? That costume (or his known homosexuality at the time) didn’t stop Galindo from continuing to compete, and to go on to a professional skating career, including a 10-year stint with the Tom Collins’ Champions on Ice show.

Now look at Johnny Weir’s short program at the NHK Trophy last year.

All I’m saying is that it’s all relative, and with a broader acceptance and comfort with self-expression along the gender norm lines within the sport, these sponsors and Stars on Ice need to get a flipping grip.

Breaking(?!): Still anti-gay CA State Sen. Roy Ashburn comes out of the closet on radio show

“I am gay.  Those are the words that have been so difficult for me for so long.  It is something that is personal, and I don’t believe I felt with my heart that being gay would affect how I do my job.”

—California State Sen. Roy Ashburn (R-Bakersfield)

This is the funniest and most pathetic story of the day. I think Roy forgot that the news broke last week, and a whole lot of people already knew.

That said, his official coming out on a Bakersfield radio show reveals that he’s still unapologetically politically homophobic, reassuring his Bakersfield constituents he’s not like those radical nasty gays who want civil rights, I presume. (GayPolitics):

Radio talk show host Inga Barks wanted assurances that Ashburn would continue to vote in a conservative manner on LGBT rights issues.  Ashburn responded, “I believe firmly that my responsibility is to my constituents.  I will take a careful look at each measure and apply that standard.  How would they vote on this?  How would they want me to vote on this,” adding that most people understood what that means.

“I don’t know how else to ask this, but are you going to live this lifestyle now in the district?” Barks asked.  Ashburn, who announced he is not running for public office again, said, “I pray to God I can find peace.  I want to go back to the senate and work hard for the people of my district…Now you know everything about me.”

This, my friends, is the definition of a self-loathing man. I suppose if his constituents wanted to round up TEH HOMOSEXUALS, he’d vote for that too. Sick.

Delusional Collusion - Roy Ashburn’s closet was protected by newspapers, local gays

WTF is wrong with these self-loathing gays? That at least two California newspaper knew and didn’t say that State Senator Roy Ashburn is gay is almost par for the course; after all, Rep. David Dreier’s open secret is safe with local media.

But how could all the guys partying with him at Faces, the bar Ashburn apparently frequented and was arrested not far from for DUI with an “unidentified man” in the car? Other homo-collusionists were obviously not perturbed by the lawmakers 100% anti-gay voting record. What does it take for some of our people to get the hint that this is NOT OK. (Joe. My. God):

The Californian decided that Ashburn’s sexuality wasn’t “relevant.”  The unnamed Sacramento paper apparently did too and never published. To recap: It’s not relevant that a state politician with a 100% rating from an anti-gay group is gay himself.  Can you fucking BELIEVE that?  And it turns out that the openly gay mayor of West Sacramento has known about Ashburn for a long time.

Christopher Cabaldon, the openly gay mayor of West Sacramento told KOVR he has spotted Senator Ashburn at gay hot spots a number of times.  According to Project Vote Smart, Ashburn’s has consistently voted against gay rights legislation including no on recognizing out of state same-sex marriages, no on creating a state recognized Harvey Milk Day, and no on expanding anti-discrimination laws.  “To live a secret life and at the same time be attacking the people who you’re one of but are too ashamed to admit, that’s hypocrisy,” said Cabaldon to KOVR CBS 13.

That hypocrisy apparently didn’t bother Mayor Cabaldon enough to actually fucking say something. And you know that if Cabaldon knew, many other queers in Sacramento knew. If I lived in West Sacramento, I’d want to have a long angry talk with my mayor.

This is heinous. That Ashburn was dragged out of his unlocked-padlocked closet to the rest of us is a major problem here. Well when Ashburn was asked about his sexual orientation, perhaps his answer gives us a clue about the political culture of apathy of the gay community where the bloodshot-eyed, state vehicle-driving drunk legislator likes to cruise.

“Why would that be anyone’s business? Including The Californian‘s? “I think there are certain subjects that are simply not relevant and this is one of them. It has no bearing on the job I do.”

Even with a 100% anti-gay voting record, along with organizing family values demonstrations to protect the sanctity of marriage. Something is really f*cked up out there in Sacramento.

Republican Sexual Hypocrites, 2010 edition: add anti-gay California State Senator Roy Ashburn

We haven’t seen a new batch of Republican Sexual Hypocrites so far in 2010, but in slides anti-gay California State Senator Roy Ashburn (R-Bakersfield), who manages a triple play.

  1. After being pulled over for driving erratically in downtown Sacramento at 2AM on Wed., he earned a DUI, reeking of alcohol, with bloodshot eyes, and blew over a .08.
  2. He was driving a state vehicle, owned by the taxpayers at the time. Ashburn immediately won’t be allowed to drive any vehicle for 30 days.
  3. And the conservative “family values” pol, who fought marriage equality, did this after leaving a gay nightclub, Faces, with an unidentified man in the state vehicle.

Let’s go to the video…

Ashburn, a father of four, is a Republican Senator representing parts of Kern, Tulare and San Bernardino Counties with a history of opposing gay rights.

Ashburn issued a statement on the arrest Wednesday afternoon:

I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment. I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me – my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate.”

As Joe Jervis notes, Roy easily meets the Larry Craig gold standard of Republican Sexual Hypocrite:

He also has a 100% rating from the anti-gay Capitol Resource Family Impact group for voting against every LGBT rights bill during his tenure.

Don’t you wonder whether the “unidentified man” in the car knew he was cruising off with a self-loathing homo-hater? If he didn’t, he certainly knows now…

Arkansas: Dem U.S. House candidate on board of group citing execution of gays, bestiality, incest

Now it’s not as if one would expect a politician running for Congress in the state of Arkansas to be a flaming liberal, but when you have a man, former state senator Tim Wooldridge, a Democrat, proudly sitting on the board of an organization called Arkansas Families First Foundation, that announces

“In times like these we cannot afford to remain silent or ‘pitch our tents toward Sodom.’”

and

The passionate intensity of the homosexual agenda must not be overlooked. Homosexuality is a leading cause in undermining the traditional family structure

and (for our heterosexual friends out there)

Sexual expression outside the confines of a marriage between a man and a woman cheapens God’s gift and subverts His perfect design. Whenever the physical acts of sex (or even images associated with sex) are separated from the relational context God intended, they lead to heartache, disappointment and pain. Pray for the state of our unions!

it’s time to shed a light on him and ask whether the Arkansas Democratic Party has any problem with this Clay County Dem candidate for the 1st Congressional District. I’m sure the party will defend this old saw:

If homosexual “rights” activists have their way, marriage will become a question of sexual rights and subjective, individual interpretations. Polygamy, incestuous relationships, and even non-sexual relationships might be called marriage, and this would be considered an infringement of personal rights.

WTF? Even

NON-SEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS

? So now one has to have

forced sexual relations

in a union in order for it to be valid? How is THAT aspect of marriage any business of the state? Do they know how many heterosexual relationships that “non-sexual” could cover? And as far as incest comparisons and the rest, it’s no surprise—after all, failed presidential candidate and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee had no problem going there. AFFF also believes that if you’re gay there is a “real option individuals have to leave the lifestyle.”

David McAvoy of Blue Arkansas brought this live fundie wire to our attention and broke this story.

Now, I’m sending out some questions to the Wooldridge campaign and others running for Congress. In Wooldridge’s questions, I plan on asking him directly about this. This issue is not about what Wooldridge thinks about a particular issue like marriage equality-it’s about his view of human beings that happen to be different and about fundamental decency and character. If Wooldridge belonged to a group that made similar disgusting comments about African Americans or Jews then his ability to represent the people of this district, all the people, would be called into question. It’s no different here when he’s sitting on the board of an organization that advances the hatred of gay people and drags Christianity through the ditch while it’s at it.

Senator Wooldridge shouldn’t be touting his work for this group. He should be ashamed of it.

There’s a lot more to be ashamed of…like his bill calling for hangings in the public square. More below the fold.

Latest eruption from Bill ‘Your son was a homo’ James: ‘de-infest areas where gays congregate’

Bill James isn’t through making headlines; he clearly has difficulty coping with his fellow Mecklenburg County Commissioners voting to extend domestic partner benefits to county employees—and that includes same-sex couples.

He not only didn’t apologize to Democrat Commissioner Vilma Leake when her referred to her late son, who succumbed to AIDS, he’s spewing more homophobic bullsh*t. The latest:

Homosexual conduct is illegal in NC (even after Lawrence V Texas). We arrest 250 homosexuals each year in Mecklenburg alone for either a ‘crime against nature’ or ‘solicitation of a crime against nature’. Unlike prostitution (exchanging money), even suggesting homosexual sex is a criminal offense in NC. If we were all that ‘progressive’ would we be arresting 250 homosexuals a year? Setting up sting operations to de-infest areas where they congregate? Point is, if you want to delude yourself that homosexual conduct is ‘ok’ go ahead. The law, the police and the DA however have a different view.”
— Mecklenburg Commissioner Bill James

BTW, he’s right about the Crimes Against Nature law here. It’s still on the books and while Lawrence v. Texas supercedes it, the police can still make an arrest, put someone in the pokey and basically shame the hell out of them publicly until the case is tossed out. Oh, and he elaborated to Matt Comer of Q-Notes about “de-infest”:

James responded: “I think that if you’re someone who is homosexual and you believe that you are born that way and have every right to engage in that behavior, I think the offensive thing, I would surmise, is not the word ‘infest’ or ‘de-infest’ but the fact that the police are actually doing the sting operations. We can parse words — what phrase should I have used? But the central question for most people is not what particular term got used but whether the action was occurring. Was I accurate in saying there are these sting operations going on and those sting operations — whatever term you want to use — target homosexual men? That is why the county took and spent significant amounts of money to rework the park to take out certain landscaping things to prevent, once the sting operations cleared them out, prevent them from re-congregating — or re-infesting if you use my original term.”

The cretin is on a roll now; hate mail must give him a boner (Wjames@carolina.rr.com).

You can also politely let Commission Chair Jennifer Roberts know that language in a reprimand cannot be harsh enough,as LGBT youth groups in Charlotte are outraged by James’s bigotry, given he’s a public servant. She’s been a wonderful ally for years; I interviewed her back in 2005 when James was last in significant eruption mode. But what’s more important is to thank the Commission for doing the right thing and supporting the County’s gay and lesbian employees and their committed relationships.

Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners (pictured left to right)
Front row: Vilma Leake (District 2), Harold Cogdell, Jr. (Vice-Chairman, At-Large),
Jennifer Roberts (Chairman, At-Large), Dan Murrey (At-Large), Karen Bentley (District 1).
Back Row: George Dunlap (District 3), Dumont Clarke (District 4),
Bill James (District 6), Neil Cooksey (District 5).

Oh, and in another spin on his non-apology to Leake, take a look at this:

[H]is comments weren’t meant to be derogatory and that “homo” was a slang word he used when growing up. “People can believe whatever they want, they can believe in the tooth fairy and legend of Atlantis,” James said. “I don’t determine what I do based on what people think. I determine it based on what I did and what I did was I asked a question and that question doesn’t deserve or require an apology.

NC: Mecklenburg County Commissioner Bill James refuses to apologize for ‘homo’ comments to colleague

Now didn’t I tell you that CharMeck County Commissioner Bill James was a low-life, stone-cold homobigot? He’s corresponded with me delivering his sick, homo-obsessive emails since 2005.  His level of hate rivals Fred Phelps - it’s even worse that he’s an elected official who wins time and again in the fundie church-laden 6th district without opposition.

His fellow County Commissioners approved same-sex domestic partner benefits 6-3 on Monday, and some like Commissioner Vilma Leake delivered personally emotional remarks in favor ot the measure—she cited her late son, who had died from complications of AIDS. The cruel James leaned over to her (with a hot mic broadcasting) and said “Your son was a homo, really? When Leake heard that, she replied: “Don’t make me hurt you. Don’t do that to me. Don’t talk to me about my son.”

Naturally, people have called for James, a completely, pathologically homo-obsessed man who focuses on sex acts using his County email to apologize. I laughed at that, knowing if he said anything at all, he was going to send out an e-blast statement. And lo, and behold, FoxNewsCharlotte received a missive that is pure vile James to the core, comparing homosexuality to alcoholism and slamming his colleague on a personal level, including charging that Leake was “threatening” him in her above reply:

In the statement, BJames says:

Vilma is a religious hypocrite.”

She was married to a Bishop in the AME Zion church. This church has historically opposed homosexuality.”

“In justifying her position last night in public she used her son’s ‘lifestyle’ and his death from HIV-AIDS to justify voting for benefits to allow individuals to use tax dollars to engage in the same behavior that resulted in her son’s death.”

It is akin to someone whose son is an alcoholic and died from the disease, using his death from drinking as justification to have the taxpayers pay for more booze.”

“Her position was that her ‘faith’ demanded that she do this to support her son and his ‘lifestyle’ which she acknowledges killed him.”

“In doing so, it is legitimate to ask her what ‘lifestyle’ and in particular whether her son was a homosexual. Her response was to threaten me with physical violence (typical for her). Of course, this isn’t the first time she has threatened elected officials. On the School Board she had a long and checkered history threatening to harm those she disagrees with.”

“Well, if she didn’t want to make her ‘son’ an issue – why did she use him, his lifestyle and his tragic self-inflicted death from AIDS as the reason for her vote?”

Sometimes you just don’t believe someone can be this sick—and he’s re-elected to Mecklenburg’s district 6 time and again. Imagine a district full of Bill James clones. Heaven help you if you’re black or gay there.

Feel free to drop Bill a line (he’ll like write back with some screed about felching and anal sex):

FAIL: Rick Warren tries to take a neutral position on Uganda’s ‘execute gays’ bill

Pastor Rick Warren attempts to straddle a volatile issue—Uganda’s legislation that calls for the execution of gays—and commits a double twist, backflip FAIL by saying As a pastor, my job is to encourage, to support. I never take sides.” Timothy Kincaid at Box Turtle Bulletin:

Warren is not hesitant to interfere in international religious divisions or schisms. Though not Anglican, he has been a major player in providing American support to African Anglicans who are seeking to oust any affiliates from the Anglican Communion that make any accommodation for gay Christians.

...[He]’s no stranger to activism on behalf of legislation. Though he was not highly visible in supporting Proposition 8, he did not hesitate to instruct his flock – which does not stop at the walls of his church – to vote to take away the civil rights of their gay neighbors.

But Warren has now found the one exception to his political involvement. And that exception is the proposed Ugandan “Kill Gays” bill. Unlike virtually anything else that flickers across his attention, this piece of legislation just doesn’t rise to the level of requiring his involvement. That would be “interfering in the political process of other nations.”

Or maybe Rick Warren just doesn’t find it unethical on the part of leadership in Uganda to execute HIV positive gay people, incarcerate the rest for life, ban any form of activism that might object, and jail those family, friends, or acquaintances who fail to report their gay loved ones to the government.

Yes, let’s go to the videotape…

Warren’s moral judgment here only points out that hypocrisy knows no bounds—and this is the man who Barack Obama invited to deliver the invocation at his inauguration. Pillar of loving Christianity, Rick Warren. Does the White House have any comment about this? Will someone ask Robert “I know nothing” Gibbs at the daily presser?

Oh wait—the Obama administration has taken a position—it agrees with Rick Warren!

And is it a coincidence that the Obama administration—in which Warren has a fan at the very top—has not spoken out loudly enough against what’s happening in Uganda and that the man who doles out the AIDS dollars (our taxpayer dollars, need I remind) on behalf of the president to Uganda, PEPFAR chief Eric Goosby, says pretty much what Warren says?  According to Newsweek.com, Goosby says his job is “not to tell a country how to put forward their legislation.”

Wow. Just. Wow.

***

Truth Wins Out calls for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to hold a hearing on PEPFAR funding to demand strict human rights, patient confidentiality and free speech controls are tied to PEPFAR aid, particularly since Goosby is not concerned.

Goosby appears to be both ignorant of HIV/AIDS in Uganda, and determined to use taxpayer dollars to undermine the very same education programs that PEPFAR was created to support:

  1. HIV/AIDS in Uganda is primarily a heterosexual phenomenon; Goosby falsely contends that it is a homosexual phenomenon that threatens the “general population.”
  2. The Anti-Homosexuality Bill would criminalize key aspects of comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention education and imprison health-care workers who refuse to report sexually active gay patients to the police.

Goosby’s use of federal funds to subsidize the punishment of HIV/AIDS education and health-care workers, and to push LGBT Ugandans deep underground, is inexcusable. And the silence of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, regarding her subordinates’ support for violence in Uganda, is unacceptable.

TX: Houston mayoral candidate Annise Parker targeted by gay-baiting postcard mailing

HomophobiaVotingTexas

When people stoop to low-blow ignorant propaganda tactics like this, it means their candidate of choice has nothing better to offer. Houston Comptroller Annise Parker did well on election night in the mayors race, earning her a seat in a run off against Gene Locke (polls now have her leading 47-34).

So with a lead like that, the gloves come off, and boy did they. Local wingnut Dave Wilson sent out a postcard to 35,000 people featuring a photo of Parker and her partner, declaring, “Is this the image Houston wants to portray?” and takes the “oh, so sorry you are a homosexual and need to be free from it” tack:

“I have nothing but compassion, respect and sensitivity towards those trapped in homosexual behavior. I have family members and friends who have been ensnared in this behavior, and I know something of the incredible pain and sorrow it has brought to them and their families. With God’s grace, I carefully balance this love and respect for these individuals with warnings about the promotion and demand for legal and political approval for homosexual behavior that will stifle religious freedom and trap millions of more people in its deadly grip. Therefore, I would ask you to vote against Annise Parker for Mayor.

But the lunacy doesn’t stop there. The other reason that Dave Wilson needed to send a reminder about Parker’s lesbianism is that, apparently, if you’re gay and elected to office, you will help in the extinction of the human race., ah, that old saw again.

Dave Wilson, an electrician who has spent years pestering incumbent politicians of both parties, has turned his sights on Houston Controller Annise Parker. He says that Parker should not be mayor because ‘homosexual behavior leads to extinction.’ Wilson says he is mailing the fliers to 35,000 Houston voters who cast ballots both in the November mayoral election and in the 2008 Republican presidential primary. ‘I’d like to energize the conservative Christian base in Houston, and get them to vote,’ he said…‘I don’t see a good family, a Christian family, one man, one woman,’ Wilson said. ‘It’s a picture of her and her mate being sworn in in public and that’s the image I have a problem with.’ 11 News asked Wilson what he believes is wrong with the city having an openly gay mayor. ‘The openly gay lifestyle leads to extinction,’ he said. ‘You can’t reproduce.’”

I’m sorry, but is Wilson saying that hopefully-soon-to-be-mayor Annise Parker is going to outlaw sexual intercourse and artificial insemination? How exactly is her election going to stop reproduction?

I’m so tired f reality-challenged excuses “gays-cause the-end-of-the-world” horsesh*t like this. What’s sad is the number of sheeple who believe people like Wilson. The critical thinking skills of too many American voters are nonexistent, and even worse, celebrated by the religious extremists, teabaggers, who court the know-nothing vote. It’s sad.

Houston, show us that you’re a reality-based city in the Lone Star State looking toward the future and selecting your mayor on their qualifications to do the job. Toss that postcard into the recycling bin.
