McCain flip flops on GOP abortion plank in platform

John McCain is apparently getting too soft and squishy on womb control (yawn, yeah, right) and the fundies and pro-choicers in the party are erupting.

ABC News’ Teddy Davis and Rigel Anderson Report: John McCain’s campaign signaled on Wednesday that the Arizona senator is backing away from his previously stated goal of changing the GOP’s platform on abortion.

...McCain’s decision to leave the platform untouched follows a warning from a prominent social conservative.

If he were to change the party platform,” to account for exceptions such as rape, incest or risk to the mother’s life, “I think that would be political suicide,” Tony Perkins, the president of the conservative Family Research Council, told ABC News in May. “I think he would be aborting his own campaign because that is such a critical issue to so many Republican voters and the Republican brand is already in trouble.”

...“If he doesn’t change the platform, then he’s being the same kind of hypocrite that he accused Bush of being in 2000,” Jennifer Blei Stockman, the co-chairwoman of Republican Majority for Choice, told ABC News in May.

If McCain picks a pro-choice VP, watch out; Dobson et. al. will explode. Or at least I would expect the hypocrite of Colorado Springs to do so; after all, he’s already had to eat crow for coming around for the Arizona senator after swearing he’d stay home rather than vote for him. In fact, in 2000, he said this about McCain:

“The Senator,” Dobson said, “is being touted by the media as a man of principle, yet he was involved with other women while married to his first wife, and was implicated in the so-called Keating scandal with four other senators.  He was eventually reprimanded by the Congress for the ‘appearance of impropriety.’ The Senator reportedly has a violent temper and can be extremely confrontational and profane when angry.  These red flags about Senator McCain’s character are reminiscent of the man who now occupies the White House.”

Gee Daddy D, how has it all changed for you these days?

Speaking of drop-kicks and pressure on McCain from the fundies as he hones in on his Veep pick, conservative Richard A. Viguerie, chairman of ConservativeHQ.com (always good for a press release to beat on who he thinks is too soft to be a true conservative), wrote a hilarious open letter to the presumptive GOP nominee—it’s below the fold.

The General’s letter to Focus’s Stuart ‘pray for rain’ Shepard

FundiesFun Stuff

Jesus’ General never lets me down. From his missive to Focus on the Anus’s Stuart Shepard, whose video has probably seen more hits since it was yanked from Daddy D’s site:

As much as I love your idea of using the power of imprecatory prayer to ask God to deluge Barack Obama’s acceptance speech with a vengeful rebuke of hellish lightening and stinging rain, it’s not an adequate response to the threat he and his followers represent. After all, this is a man who is hell bent on taking our white women. God’s response should be commensurate with the crime.

Let us, instead, ask God to punish Obama and his followers with the same curse He levied upon the ancient Philistines of Ashdod, Gath, and Bethshemesh. Yes, let us ask the Lord to smite them with hemorrhoids in their secret parts.

Q of the day, part 2 - products you loathe

Fun Stuff

That earlier thread on favorite products is a roaring success, here's the thread for your worst experiences with a product, food or service—it simply didn't live up to the expectations as advertised in terms of performance, taste or competence.

The list may be just as long here. Obviously each person's experience varies with even the same product or service may differ.

Off of the top of my head…

*KaBoom Bowl Blaster Kit. What was I thinking? This is a foaming cleaner that's supposed to bubble up to lather the sides and rim of the bowl and make scrubbing minimal or unnecessary. So Kate and I put the blaster in, and instead of watching it foam up and fill the bowl, it fizzed up about an inch and then just stopped. The bubbles didn't even "scrub" for that matter.

* Neuton Cordless Hedge Trimmer. Boy, this was feeble. Kate and I are big fans of the Neuton Electric Cordless Mower, so we figured this addition to the lawn tools would be helpful. That didn't work out. It really couldn't cut shrubs unless they had really thin branches and the power drained so fast from the battery from the tool laboring so hard to cut that I went back to the manual hedge trimmer. Eventually I just got a corded one.

I'm sure you'll have more. Have at it.

Q of the day - your favorite product

Fun Stuff

It’s the weekend—kick back from politics for a bit and have a little fun with this random Q of the day…

What product do you love so much that you’d be willing to endorse it if its manufacturer came to you?

To alleviate political guilt, you don’t have to pick a politically correct company; this is strictly based on something you have tried or used that you think is brilliant (or wish you had invented).

I’ll dive in first with two products that are essentials to me. They are after the jump.
