Funkdaddy Supreme’s House O’ Speech

imageBarack Obama is apparently going to have his acceptance speech in front of a mockup of the Parthenon or something, an act of hubris unrivaled in modern times.

Of course, there is no backdrop that Obama could have for his speech that wouldn’t play into Republican attacks on his “celebrity”—if he had it in the Pepsi Center, it would be compared to glitzy stage shows by (just throwing out a name here) someone like Madonna.  If he took it to a small, intimate setting, it would be compared to a wine party among celebrities.  If he takes it to Invesco Field and parachutes in from a blimp and starts shooting streamer guns into the audience in a giant orange top hat, it would be compared to the awesomest shit that ever happened.

What is the proper method for such a presumptuous man as this to accept the nomination of his party?  It’s obviously not in any way that a Republican would accept it, because the very acts of hubris that make a man like Obama a foppish dandy dippily doodling his way along to the Oval Office are tamed and converted into powerfully heterosexual normality by the sheer pulsating power of Reaganism.  Shall Obama accept the nomination on an upscaled corner stoop, James Clyburn and Maxine Waters shuffling by with a curt, respectful head nod?  Should the nomination of the first major party black candidate in America’s history happen in a gloriously reimagined welfare line, where a dolled-up John Kerry dressed as Uncle Sam hands him the welfare check of the $400,000 a year Presidential salary?

Please, you heartland patriots, design the Black Liberal’s Acceptance Speech.  And don’t skimp on the Black Power salutes, either.

Nah - there’s an obvious choice of imagery to play on Republican fears…

I have no idea what the hell that thing is, PIATOR, but I’m all for it.

Actually, I had this brain fart the other day (probably last Saturday when Biden was announced) when some talking head on TV mentioned something about Obama and Biden going their separate ways on the campaign trail this week, then being reunited at the convention when Obama gives his acceptance speech.  It involved this elaborate plan where they would go to opposite ends of the country (Seattle and Miami?  Maine and Southern California?) and campaign their way towards Denver, where, on the final night, they would enter opposite sides of Invesco field, sprint up to opposite ends of the stage, and meet in the middle with a powerful Fist Bump, to the strains of something totally awesome, like Foreigner or the good years of Michael Jackson’s career.  There would also be some sort of amazingly choreographed dance routine featuring Obama and Biden, with like fifty hybrid Rockettes/Fly Girls backup dancers.

I don’t think that’s the plan at this point, though, unfortunately.

“Oh, Hellll yeah! East Side, where you at? Holla! Where my drank at? We gon get loose up in here, see?” And so on and on…

(Is that Bootsy Collins?)

That picture reminded me of the good old days of funk.  You kids don’t know what you missed… smile

Actually, I missed the best stuff myself…

Obama should what ever he wants.  He’s earned the right, and the MSM and the wingnuts will do what they do no matter what.  (as you point out.)

I really don’t care as long as the cops, the FBI, and the Secret Service do their jobs.

Sorry, let me be more specific — keep the man alive, whether you like him or not, whether your brother-in-law has convinced you he’s a secret Islamic operative or not, whether you hate liberals or not, whether you think his church is too radical, or his wife is too uppity, whether you think he has enough experience or not, etc.

Keep The Man Alive…

Shaky video, desert cave, come one, it’s obvious!

No actually I think he should totally enter the stage on horseback.

Barack Obama is apparently going to have his acceptance speech in front of a mockup of the Parthenon or something, an act of hubris unrivaled in modern times.

Even without the almost mandatory GOP hypocrisy, they’d still be left with their pig ignorance of the symbolism of classical architecture in American politics.

Of course, there is no backdrop that Obama could have for his speech that wouldn’t play into Republican attacks on his “celebrity”

What if he wears a flightsuit?

Nah - there’s an obvious choice of imagery to play on Republican fears…

True, Phoenician, but most of the Young Republican Spartan warriors would suddenly find, like their Lord Cheney did in earlier days, that they’d have better things to do than head down to Thermopylae.

Comment #7: Gracchus  on  08/27  at  10:42 PM

No, he should enter riding a pig, like the Antichrist did in the Left Behind books!

Comment #8: The Opoponax  on  08/27  at  10:44 PM

My quietly sidling away from you has absolutely nothing to do with you just having revealed that you know how the Antichrist arrives in the Left Behind books.

Nothing whatsoever.

It’s mentioned a lot over at <a href = “http://slactivist.typepad.com”>slacktivist</a>.

Comment #10: The Opoponax  on  08/27  at  10:59 PM

Please people, don’t squeal every time you hear a pig squeal.  Every federal elected official works in a building designed in Greek Revival architecture.  This shit doesn’t merit a response.

The correct response is, “Just because you may “work” in front of Mom’s washing machine and Dad’s pool table and the duckpin fridge filled with chicken wings, doesn’t mean some of us don’t have higher aspirations.  So no, we aren’t recreating your basement in Invesco Field Denver.  You won’t have to deal, as you are not invited.  Back to your Chee-tos.”

Comment #11: Bruce Godfrey  on  08/27  at  11:02 PM

Why did that link not work?  I usually don’t have issues with that.  Anyway, most people know Slacktivist.

Comment #12: The Opoponax  on  08/27  at  11:06 PM

Opo or anyone else,

Off-topic, how do you put in proper A HREF links here? The few times I’ve tried I get results like the one at 9:59PM. Other tags work fine.

Comment #13: Gracchus  on  08/27  at  11:14 PM

If I knew what was wrong with my tag above, I would explain it.  But I’m afraid to tell you wrong, since clearly I don’t really know what I’m doing!

Comment #14: The Opoponax  on  08/27  at  11:22 PM

They’re going to call him a big pussy anyway ...

substitute “angle brackets” or Less than / greater than symbols for the square brackets I used…

Comment #16: MikeEss  on  08/27  at  11:24 PM

Hmm.  My linkage worked just fine.  Didn’t do anything special.

Comment #17: Loneoak  on  08/27  at  11:26 PM

On Opoponaxs link, I think the spaces she put around the equals sign broke it…

Comment #18: MikeEss  on  08/27  at  11:27 PM

Spaces.  It’s the spaces.  Why did I put spaces?

Comment #19: The Opoponax  on  08/27  at  11:28 PM

The rethugs are picking on the columns thing - seems like McSame has totally forgotten what the house that he supposedly wants to live in next actually looks like?

I think they would be more comfortable if the set looked more like a shoe shine stand and the whole thing opened with him making Biden’s shoes nice and purdy.

Comment #20: Ms Kate  on  08/27  at  11:31 PM

“Why did I put spaces?”

No big.  The URL is good if you cut and past.

Ironically, I’ve been reading Fred Clarke’s Left Behind series myself (where he takes it apart piece by piece), for self defense.  Know what the loonies are thinking…

Comment #21: MikeEss  on  08/27  at  11:34 PM

Oh, you didn’t hear?  Gee-Dub’s last act as President is going to be to have the facade of the White House remodeled to look like the front porch of a double wide trailer, complete with cinderblocks.

Comment #22: The Opoponax  on  08/27  at  11:35 PM

Thanks, MikeEss. No spaces after the = sign. No more ugly links from me.

Comment #23: Gracchus  on  08/27  at  11:35 PM

I think Obama should save the Black Power salute for the swearing-in ceremony. I’d love to see that.

I see you were one of the few not to laugh their way through “300”.

That was the Iranian-African God-King-Democrat-Candidate Barack Osama bin-Xerses, carried in on his throne of tax-dollar funded skulls, borne on the sweating and enslaved backs of good white folks who have had their guns taking away from them.

Ah.  I decided I didn’t want to see that movie based on how racist and sexist the ads were, and now I know I was right.

Comment #26: The Opoponax  on  08/28  at  12:53 AM

To pick up on what I said elseblog: it upsets them because Greek Revival reminds them of their Dixie frat houses, and they didn’t allow Those People on the porch.

Ooooh, snap, Pseudonymous!  That’s a good one.

Not to threadjack, but I thought people might like to know that after the speech coverage C-SPAN’s blog roundup mentioned both this post and Jesse by name.  I know it made my day a little brighter.

Congrats!

Apparently, God help us, “Meet the Spartans” managed to throw homophobia in there and obtain a trifecta in crappiness.

Tuesday night was Hillary Clinton, Wednesday night was Bill Clinton, so [a href=“http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:George_Clinton_in_Centreville.jpg”]there’s only one Clinton left![/url]

The Mothership lands at Mile High Stadium, the next President of the United States steps out, and we become One Nation Under a Groove.

Let’s try that link again…

Comment #32: The J Train  on  08/28  at  01:45 AM

Opoponax: I was googling around for pictures of the be-columned frat houses in Athens, which I remembered for their asshole fratboy Busch Light-swillers on the porch, and found a picture of Trent Lott’s frat house in Oxford, Miss., that he fought long and hard to keep segregated. Well, looky: ain’t that all Greek and shit.

Comment #33: pseudonymous in nc  on  08/28  at  01:57 AM

What is an election, but a horse race? Obviously, he should dress as a jockey.

Comment #34: George Smiley  on  08/28  at  02:37 AM

I’m just disappointed I can’t make Reifenstahl references to Bush 2004 anymore without hitting Obama in the crossfire.

Seriously, I can’t remember any convention using Roman columns before then.  It just fit in so well with the perfect evilness of that convention.  Why, Barack?  Why?

Comment #35: NY Expat  on  08/28  at  04:02 AM

I totally want Obama to do his speech in a Greek temple. Even better, it should be totally Sun-Ra Egyptian looking.

Comment #36: atheist  on  08/28  at  07:53 AM

The Republicans have truly fumbled up this time. The ads criticizing Obama are heavy on sarcasm. Republicans have forgotten what has taken years for Democrats to learn:  Americans (especially conservatives) don’t get sarcasm. Sarcastic ads confuse the distracted voter. McCain’s ads, if you ignore the sarcasm, make Obama look like the natural man for the job. The McCain ads couldn’t be better for Obama. More please.

Comment #37: Brendan  on  08/28  at  07:54 AM

Even if there was no stage, no backdrop and only the work lights on at the (shudder) Pepsi Center (ptooi! I hate ‘naming rights’, stupidest thing to happen to auditoria..), the GOP would still complain about the ‘hubris’.

Fox News has ordered their viewers to disbelieve their own eyes and to accept their redefinition of basic words, and their authoritarian-loving viewers dutifully Baa! on cue.

And it makes no difference which Democrat won the nomination, the GOP will always attack reason and logic, it’s what they do.

The Democrats and the rest of us left need to actually start fighting back against the last 28 years of anti-American Republicanism, or we are all doomed.  I haven’t seen Obama, or any other Democratic ‘leader’ do that in the last 28 years (except Dennis Kucinich or Cynthia McKinney, and the Democratic leadership forced her out for fighting against the GOP).

It is self-evident that the Democratic Leadership are in league with the GOP.  There is just one party in the USA, even if they claim two names…

Comment #38: Comrade Rutherford  on  08/28  at  09:58 AM

Oh please let him conclude his oration thusly.

Comment #39: Sarcastro  on  08/28  at  10:56 AM

re: naming rights.  Obama referred to Invesco Field as “Mile High Stadium” last night, which makes this old Denverite happy.

Comment #40: casey  on  08/28  at  11:21 AM

And the stupid press can’t connect the dots. Hello?! 50th anniversary of I have a Dream! Lincoln Memorial, which, as I last saw on Sunday as I jogged by it, has lots and lots of Greek columns.

I mean, when I think of Martin Luther King’s speech and the historic implications of Obama becoming the Democratic nominee on the same day, it just takes my breath away.

Comment #46: Quaker in a Basement  on  08/28  at  02:55 PM

Don’t you guys remember when the White House people regularly had Bush photographed with various circular devices behind his head, resembling halos?

If Barack is trying to pass himself off prematurely as President, at least he isn’t trying to pass himself off as God.

Get back in your holes, please, you pathetic losers.

Comment #47: Green Eagle  on  08/28  at  03:59 PM

Hey, he’s in a football stadium, he’s athletic, he’s a negro.  Obviously someone should pass him the nomination and he should carry it over the goal line to thunderous applause.

Comment #48: Landa Gentry  on  08/28  at  05:12 PM

The Republican’s Biggest Complaint: The playing field is level and they aren’t allowed to move the goalposts.

Comment #49: Ms Kate  on  08/28  at  05:43 PM

The stadium goes dark.  Blackazoid mounts a white horse, and the spotlight picks him up as he rides in to the strains of “Lets Go Crazy”.  He pulls up and rears the horse in front of a giant glyph.
