Obama/Biden

That’s the ticket.  (I got the text at 3:29 AM.)

I was enthused by precisely none of the candidates, and Biden brings with him some baggage that I worry about (mainly the history of saying bizarrely offensive things), but as these things go, it’s a not-awful choice.  The Republican oppo dump was going to come, regardless.

MSNBC’s focusing on Biden’s comments about Obama’s experience, which I think are fairly easy to overcome, because you have the guy who said them there to rebut them.  The AP’s Ron Fournier writes another part of the McCain campaign pushback - Obama’s scurred.

Lynn Sweet is also on MSNBC declaring that the Obama campaign has broken a social contract with his supporters because the Veep pick may have been confirmed before the text message went out.  Bloggers will also be angry.  Digital blood will stain the streets!

Lynn Sweet sounded like an idiot with that comment.  Broken social contract?  Could you be more dramatic?

I was slightly annoyed by the fact that the word got out before the text message, but seriously - if someone tries to make that the media narrative for the next two days they need to get a life.  Iraq War?  Shitty Economy?  A guy so out of touch he doesn’t know how many houses he owns?  Let’s talk about what actually matters.

I am a bit surprised that no one in the Obama Campaign thought about the fact that the Secret Service showing up at Biden’s house would be a huge tipoff to the media stalkerazzi hanging outside his house.  They probably should have shot out the text message BEFORE sending the Secret Service to Biden’s house.

All in all though, it really is much ado about nothing.

I was always under the impression that we’d “know” before the text message get out, even if only by a few minutes - they’re camped outside of his fucking house, for God’s sake.

Comment #2: Jesse Taylor  on  08/23  at  05:44 AM

I do think Biden is going to hand Mittens (or any of McCain’s likely choices) his ass on a platter when they come to St. Louis for their debate in October, though…

And with Biden on the ticket, we can bring the catchphrase “a noun, a verb, and POW” into the official campaign rhetoric straight from the originator of the Giuliani 9/11 comment.

Comment #3: DTG in STL  on  08/23  at  05:45 AM

Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing… but Joe Biden is the poorest member of the US Senate.  I’ll throw up the link when I can track it down, but I saw this (with a source) somewhere on DKos or MyDD…

With that in mind, Obama-Biden versus McCain-Romney certainly looks like two (relatively) regular guys running against two filthy rich fatcats.

Comment #4: DTG in STL  on  08/23  at  05:48 AM

I take back my last comment… given how many truly poor people there are in America, it’s insulting to refer to any member of the US Senate as “poorest”.  But he is the least affluent member, and his total net worth is less than $300K (compared to Obama’s at around $4MM and McCain’s at $100MM).

Comment #5: DTG in STL  on  08/23  at  05:56 AM

A guy so out of touch he doesn’t know how many houses he owns?  Let’s talk about what actually matters.

LOL That’s hilarious. Because Americans are gonna vote based on which millionaire ISN’T the rich guy. Thanks for the laugh.

Comment #6: Sharon  on  08/23  at  07:22 AM

I’m not thrilled about Biden, but I too am hoping he can contribute some rhetoric-fu to the debates. Obama’s not without his gaffes, but he’s the master of the carefully-turned phrase… maybe he can help Biden moderate his less, er, palatable impulses.

Comment #7: rhiain  on  08/23  at  07:40 AM

I was not thrilled to get the text message at 2 am because I forgot to put my fucking cell phone on silent and it woke both of us up.  Feh.

Yeah, because it’s not like McCain has spent EVERY MINUTE OF THE LAST EIGHT WEEKS trying to paint Obama as elitist.

Wait…

Comment #9: Dweeze  on  08/23  at  10:20 AM

CNN reported it after midnight and it was immediately all over FriendFeed, twitter, Facebook, etc.  This forced them to text at 3am instead of later.

As for the choice?  Blah!  Right wing of the Democratic party, hawk, loose cannon and understands foreign policy about as well as McCain - which means media believes it’s true despite the evidence to the opposite.

Comment #10: Coturnix  on  08/23  at  10:43 AM

Oh, I’m totally joining the PUMA movement because I had received e-mails from the NYT and the Chicago Tribune with the news hours before I got the Obama campaign’s text and e-mails. Who’s with me? Lemme get my checkbook and send some money to McCain now.

Well, with Bidens predatory lender buddies, you too can now buy as many houses as McCain….only, you’ll lose them after a year or two.

Comment #16: pheeno  on  08/23  at  01:41 PM

Its funny how John Mccain issued an “attack ad” in less time than it took for him (and his staff) to answer the simple question, “how many homes do you own?” What an old, stinkin, backstabbin, false teeth having, warmongering, false story telling JOKE mccain is! In the words of Ivan Drago… “Mccain, You will lose!” I will bet my “only” house on it!!!

Also shows Obama being more of a leader than Mccain. Simply by selecting his running mate first. Now Mccain can do what he was born to do…. FOLLOW the leader! lol

OBAMA 08!

Comment #17: John Mccain will Lose  on  08/23  at  02:56 PM

You know what I love about Obama?  He picked Biden to be his running mate.  Biden’s opinion of Obama: “clean”, articulate African American who lacks the the experience to be President.  Biden’s opinion of McCain: “my hero”, a man he would be proud to run with or against for the office of President.

Obama. Man! I just want to thank him for picking Biden and not Hillary.  The only person he could have picked that would have been better is John Kerry.

It’s Mama Cindy’s money.

True. Mama Cindy makes John sleep in the garage, and feeds him on table scraps. When they go to their ranch in Sedona, she takes the bizjet, while he comes later by Greyhound. John does not benefit from all that moolah at all.

Brer Rabbit’s eyes got very large. “Oh please Brer Fox, whatever you do, please don’t throw me into the briar patch.”

“Maybe I should roast you over a fire and eat you,” mused Brer Fox. “No, that’s too much trouble. Maybe I’ll hang you instead.”

“Roast me! Hang me! Do whatever you please,” said Brer Rabbit. “Only please, Brer Fox, please don’t throw me into the briar patch.”

Comment #20: Hector B.  on  08/23  at  05:46 PM

Well, that’s it for Obama.  It was a good run while it lasted.  Biden will definately come back and bite Obama in his arse.  I guess poor Obama wasn’t even about changing the name of president (well, at least not to Obama).  McCain has a clear run to the White House now; it won’t be easy at first, but the more Obama and Biden talk, the more people will vote McCain (or at least not Obama).  Come November it will be McCain with 60% of the vote.  Maybe Obama can run again in 2012, if he can get the nod from his party that is.  Once again, thank you Mr. Obama for making the Biden mistake.

Comment #22: Ben D.  on  08/23  at  06:50 PM

I thought of something interesting about Obama’s pick of Biden.

Just about everyone I talked to back before the primaries who was worried about America’s readiness to elect a black or female president, or who otherwise bought various “Common Knowledge” memes regarding the Democratic possibilities this year, mentioned that they felt like Biden seemed like a safe bet.

I wonder how much of that sort of thing inspired this decision?  Bringing in X or Y battleground state doesn’t seem like a big priority for the Dems this year.  I wonder if Biden was chosen in an appeal to “reasonable” moderates who are a little uneasy about Barack?

Joe Biden ISN’T a millionaire… he’s a few-hundred-thousandaire.  Not a millionaire.  One of the only US Senators who isn’t a millionaire.

If McCain’s strongest criticism of the choice of Biden is that Biden was supposedly Obama’s sharpest critic (Hillary Clinton probably has something to say about that), doesn’t that put McCain in a psotion to look like a total hypocrite if he picks Romney?  I’m pretty sure that there wasn’t a bigger critic among the Republicans of McCain than Mitt Romney in the primaries.

Comment #26: DTG in STL  on  08/23  at  08:02 PM

Biden kicked ass in the speech today.

Right, like when he talked about his wife?

“Ladies and Gentleman, my wife Jill who you will meet soon and who is drop dead gorgeous. (Laughter) My wife Jill, who you will meet soon. She also has her doctorate degree which is a problem. (Laughter) But all kidding aside, my Jill, my Jill, my wife Jill and I are honored to join Barack and Michelle on this journey.”

Get it? It’s awesome when a woman is hot, but threatening (and hilarious) when she’s smart!

Miserable pick.

Who cares that he’s the one who referred to Obama as “the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.”

Who cares that he said “you cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent.”

Who cares that he voted YES on loosening restrictions on cell phone wiretapping. (Oct 2001)

Who cares that he voted YES on prohibiting same-sex marriage. (Sep 1996)

Comment #31: Doug H. (Fausto no more)  on  08/23  at  09:15 PM

Here’s the problem with Biden and what he brings to the Obama ticket. People will defend him because Obama picked him. Everything Biden has done, whether it be racial slips, voting against key liberal issues, or exagerating the truth; it won’t matter to liberals because Obama picked him. Obama picked him and that’s all they care about. This is the point in the campaign where libs put blinders on and attempt to make McCain sound like 4 more years of Bush. Now they won’t be voting for Obama or against McCain, they’ll be voting against Bush. It’s only about winning, they don’t care about who can do a better job, they just want someone who can beat Bush, yes I said Bush. Libs think Gore was robbed so they want justice (their idea of it anyway).

Obama is done, sure he’ll get a convention bump, but after that his numbers will begin to drop all the way to election day and then we’ll be calling McCain Mr. President. If Obama had picked Hillary it would have been a Republican nightmare, they probably would have won. Republicans should be thanking Michelle Obama for that one if I had to guess about it.

Oh, look, another Pandagon commenter who 1) immediately assumes that if I say a less-than-glowing word about Obama/Biden, I must be a PUMA and/or a McCain voter, and 2) shuts down a conversation about an actual feminist concern because it’s so much easier and more fun to use subtle threats and scare tactics. It’s really rich to be lectured about feminism by someone who’s essentially telling me to quit making so much noise about feminist issues.

Who cares about winning, we demand purity!  Nach Reagan- er- Bush- uh- McCain, uns!

As I’ve said fifty million fucking times, I’m planning to cast my vote for Obama (if the Obamabots don’t drive me over the edge first). That doesn’t mean I can’t be frustrated, outspoken, and pissed about the stupid shit he and his new running mate say and do.

Comment #36: Ben D.  on  08/23  at  10:41 PM

From Wikipedia:

The Violence Against Women Act of 1994 (VAWA) is a United States federal law. It was passed as Title IV, sec. 40001-40703 of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 HR 3355 and signed as Public Law 103-322 by President Bill Clinton on September 13, 1994. It provided $1.6 billion to enhance investigation and prosecution of the violent crime perpetrated against women, increased pre-trial detention of the accused, provided for automatic and mandatory restitution of those convicted, and allowed civil redress in cases prosecutors chose to leave unprosecuted.

VAWA was drafted by Senator Joseph Biden’s office with support from a number of advocacy organizations including Legal Momentum and The National Organization for Women, which heralded the bill as “the greatest breakthrough in civil rights for women in nearly two decades.”

Ben D., way to miss the point!

Comment #38: Lizard  on  08/23  at  10:52 PM

Well, my point was that even though hes an older white guy that may make gaffes from time to time about ethnicity and gender (please give me a white guy over the age of 60 that doesn’t!) I think his legislative accomplishments help make amends for that.

I have problems with some of his stances. His drug-war enthusiasm and gun control, for example. His vote on the Iraq War is suboptimal, though he did become one of the war’s biggest critics VERY early on, sooner than Hillary.

But he does what he needs to do for Obama—be a hatchet man against McCain, provide foreign policy gravitas, and speak to older blue collar white voters. Its a triple bank shot.

Also, guess who gives even better food to the press than McCain? Biden. Hes got the punditocracy in his back pocket.

Comment #39: Ben D.  on  08/23  at  10:58 PM

hes an older white guy that may make gaffes from time to time about ethnicity and gender (please give me a white guy over the age of 60 that doesn’t!)

But doesn’t it kill you to have to say “Sure, he insults women and minorities from time to time, but he’s the guy who can help us win!”? Doesn’t it leave an amazingly icky taste in your mouth that this is what we’re getting from the campaign of Hope and Change? Doesn’t it completely fucking suck that yet again, it’s the women and the gays and the minorities who have to take a hit “for the greater good”?

We’ve had plenty of sexist, racist white guys in the VP’s office for the last couple centuries. In my more idealistic moments, I was hoping for something better.

And if I sound hopelessly naive, I’m actually not; I just refuse to let myself be sold out without at least raising some hell about it.

Comment #40: Lizard  on  08/23  at  11:07 PM

Lizard, they were gaffes not insults. George Allen calling an American of East Indian descent a “macaca” and welcoming him to America is an insult. Trent Lott saying America would have been better off if Strom Thurmond had been elected is an insult. Some idiot asking McCain “How do we beat the bitch?” and then McCain laughing at it is an insult.

His intent in neither of those statements was to insult anyone. It was just plain insensitive and akward.

He is not a racist or a sexist. Look at what hes done in the Senate:

*Hes right on affirmative action

*Hes pro choice

*He worked for civil rights as a college student in Wlimington in the late 1960s, a city that is EXTREMELY racially divided. My mom grew up there, I know, it was one of the places that had the busing controversy.

*He was one of the earliest and biggest critics of Reagan appeasing Apartheid South Africa.

*He was for the ERA

*He passed the Violence Against Women Act

So look at what hes DONE, not what he says in his foot-in-mouth moments.

Comment #41: Ben D.  on  08/23  at  11:14 PM

Yep, who cares that he had a major part in the Clarence Thomas bullshit?

In his autobio, Clarence Thomas details how Biden stabbed him in the back (from his perspective) during his confirmation hearing.

Who cares that he’s against public funding of abortion?

That’s the one valid point in this screed. But consider making him VP will take away an anti-public funding vote.

Who cares that he’s the one who referred to Obama as “the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.”

And the problem with this would be, what exactly? Did it resonate with Obama’s inner Madonna?

I was beat incomplete

Who cares that he said “you cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent.”

Biden was priding himself on his support from the burgeoning Indian-American community in his hometown.

Who cares that he voted YES on loosening restrictions on cell phone wiretapping. (Oct 2001)

As did Barbara Boxer, Ted Kennedy, and Hillary Rodham Clinton

Who cares that he voted YES on prohibiting same-sex marriage. (Sep 1996)

Hillary supported DOMA back then, and her husband signed it into law.

Unless pheeno would have similarly rejected HRC, I’m not seeing much point to her comment.

“And the problem with this would be, what exactly? “

You really need me to explain to you the racist part of that statement? Seriously??

“Biden was priding himself on his support from the burgeoning Indian-American community in his hometown. “

Uh…sure.

“As did Barbara Boxer, Ted Kennedy, and Hillary Rodham Clinton “

Which I recall Clintons voting on that has been a Big Huge Hairy Deal on Pandagon and added as justification for voting for Obama. Hypocrisy much? Where’s the Big Hairy Outcry on Biden voting for it?

“Unless pheeno would have similarly rejected HRC”

As a matter of fact, I didn’t plan on voting Dem prior to her losing.

The shit I’m listing is why.

The Dems AND OBAMA aren’t significantly different from the Repubs.

Obama choosing that jackass Biden just hammered the final nail in his coffin as far as my vote is concerned.

“I’m not seeing much point to her comment. “

Lemme help you

Obama isn’t much better than McCain. It would be nice if people here stopped worshipping him long enough to take critisism seriously without turning into spoiled little shits and assuming non Obama lovers must always be

Everyone needs to take a step back.

Lizard, you have to realize that your comments have a context. That context is, for example, SEVEN, count them SEVEN threads on Shakesville by the racist sexist fuckwits there trying to convince people that a McCain victory is a great personal accomplishment and that “It’s my vote - fuck all y’all” is a brilliant and ethical position.

On the other hand people have to realize that Lizard has legitimate points and that criticizing Democrats doesn’t make one a Republican rat-fucker.

People are way too defensive here and way too happy to go on the offense. Chill the fuck out.

There is a huge difference between someone like pheeno who is hoping for a Republican victory so they can teach libruls a lesson and someone like Lizard who has legitimate issues.

Assuming everything that a politician does is to get votes is fairly safe. Here, however, Biden was conceding that he and his state occupied no moral high ground. Much as Obama noted his beloved grandmother was not free of racist impulses.

Racism is everyone’s problem. I’m surprised pheeno as a POC/WOC didn’t see this.

Not when it’s an answer to “How do you think you’ll do with conservative southern voters”

The answer should NOT be : Well, I’ll do well with conservative southern voters because Delaware was a slave state and we wished we could have been the south hardee har har.

Also, intent (since I must remind you) is not a get out of racism free card.

Claiming he didn’t MEAN to be offensive and racist doesn’t change the fact it is offensive and racist.

Comment #52: pheeno  on  08/24  at  03:02 PM

“How do you think you’ll do with conservative southern voters”

The real question was “How do you, a Northeast liberal, think you’ll do with conservative southern voters.” To me the implication was “How do you, a typical, smug, holier-than-thou, my-shit-don’t-stink, Brie-eating, white-wine-sipping liberal, think you’ll do with those you no doubt consider to be stump-jumping redneck products of cousin marriage?”

And Biden’s answer was “Delaware is not an ivory tower of interracial harmony, but a place no different from the south, both in its shameful history of slavery and in its current high percentage of black people.”

The racism of a remark is of course subjective. If the hearer considers it racist, it is racist regardless of the intent of the speaker. Now , as a white person, I am not privileged to take offense to Biden’s answer. To me it was a bald history and civics lesson. Did black people complain at the time? I don’t recall Pam’s objecting to it.
