O’Keefe, his buddies, and their ugly attitudes about violence against women

Eric Boehlert has an excellent piece up really slamming the mainstream media—-including netroots sources like Media Matters—-for covering the James O’Keefe ACORN stories without fully delving into how deceitful those videos were. Boehlert focuses on one of the most obvious missteps, which is letting the heavy editing of the video convince you that O’Keefe actually pretended to be a pimp, wearing that outrageous costume.  The independent investigation reveals that O’Keefe wore business casual clothing and presented himself as a college student or an ordinary Joe just trying to help a friend.  Hannah Giles’ willingness to call herself a prostitute seems shaky at first—-she claimed to be a dancer, initially, but then got bolder with her prostitution story—-but if you were an ACORN employee who was one of the very few who fell for this (and there were very few), it’s because you didn’t see a pimp and a prostitute, but a prostitute accompanied by a man who acted like her friend.

Boehlert and Brad Friedman have written exhaustively on how misleading the videos were, how they were heavily edited to make it look like employees were answering questions they weren’t actually asked (it seems that a lot of the “tax evasion” stuff was created in editing—-employees seem to be talking about strategies to escape an abusive pimp).  So read them to get the full extent of that particular angle.

What I want to talk about is the story that O’Keefe and Giles presented, and how it demonstrates what deep down horrible, rotten, broken people they are.  They seemed to have variations on this story, but you’ll recognize the basic idea.  I took a screenshot from the independent report.

The video implies that the advice about the 13-year-olds was given with the intent of helping a pimp control them.  This doesn’t fit the circumstances.  In fact, it appears that what happened was that employees were responding to requests on how to get young girls out of sex work, not keep them in.

Now, it’s unclear to me how many of the people who heard this story believed it at all.  The woman they focus a lot of energy on in the video was spinning a bunch of lies at them to get them out of there, and fearing for her safety, she locked the door behind them.  I don’t blame her; both Giles and O’Keefe creep me out, too, and I’m sure the ill intent was radiating off them.  Also, people who think sex trafficking is a joke are scary people.  The report indicates that some employees did, despite their suspicions about Giles, try to play along and be kind to her on the off chance she wasn’t full of shit, and they basically told her to reach out to domestic violence shelters to leave the life.  In the Baltimore office, Giles presented as a sex worker who wanted out, and the advice was offered by an employee who took pity on her.  In Brooklyn, Giles said she needed help buying a house to hide trafficked girls from a pimp; they were skeptical, but gave her information on reaching out to domestic violence shelters.  In Miami, Giles once again presented herself as a prostitute under a pimp’s thumb, and once again was sent to a shelter.  In this case, Giles seems to have tried to “catch” them not turning in a woman for prostitution that presented herself as a victim of sex slavery.  Apparently, Giles and O’Keefe think women trapped in abusive situations deserve jail time.

The lying, the media complicity, the vicious racism of O’Keefe and his buddies have been covered elsewhere.  I just want to point out what vicious misogynists they are, too.  They went out of their way to turn people’s kindness towards marginalized women into a bad thing. When they encountered decent human beings who take responsibility when asked for help to stop violence against women, they brimmed over with hate for those people, and they set out to destroy them.  And while they think kindness towards prostitutes is a weakness, and violence against women is a joke, they exploited the public’s horror at sex trafficking and violence against women to slur people who were the only people in the room who actually had a problem with violence against women.

That is some fucked-up, woman-hating shit.

I’m having one of those days where my only responses to something like this are either long stretches of f-bombs or repeated expressions of desire that very bad things happen to O’Keefe, Breitbart, Giles, and everyone who piled on ACORN with absolutely no reason. Let’s just pretend I’m being more creative in my anger than normal.

It baffles me that anybody takes O’Keefe seriously.  The man radiates white male upper-class nihilism.  I wouldn’t trust him to watch my study papers for five minutes while I hit the bathroom.

Comment #2: NBarnes  on  02/17  at  07:10 PM

This will also make every similar worker think twice before offering assistance to a woman who comes in for help. “What if this is another ‘sting’ that will discredit me and/or my agency?”

“...fucked-up, woman-hating shit”, indeed.

Comment #3: NobleExperiments  on  02/17  at  07:16 PM

Why pick on O’Keefe? It’s not as if he’s unusual...

Comment #4: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  02/17  at  07:21 PM

Are the videos available online unedited? I’d like to see EXACTLY what happened.

Comment #5: kiki  on  02/17  at  07:41 PM

Nope, but I linked a report where they watched the videos and filled in gaps with interviews with the targeted workers.

Comment #6: Amanda Marcotte  on  02/17  at  07:44 PM

Good god. The original consensus on the ACORN video, months ago, was that some ACORN employees had seen through the ruse and were just feeding O’Keefe and Giles bullshit for fun. I had no idea O’Keefe’s and Giles’s deceit ran this deep, though I shouldn’t be surprised.

It IS fucked up. What’s fucked up about it in my mind is that these two clearly know that 13-year-old sex slavery happens, and instead of spending their time and energy stopping it, they spend their time and energy exploiting that fact in an attempt to tear down an organization dedicated to improving low-income communities.

These people are fucked up. It would be one thing if they believed their own lies about ACORN, but now it looks like, in their own minds, they explicitly and sincerely just hate poor people and minorities.

Comment #7: Triplanetary  on  02/17  at  07:54 PM

O’Keefe is a terrorist who’s obvious intent was to plant explosives, and eventually, kill American children. Why does he, as a terrorist, feel he’s entitled to “rights”?

Comment #8: I Heart Puppies  on  02/17  at  08:11 PM

That last statement makes no sense.  Terrorists are entitled to rights, and while O’Keefe’s a jackass, I never saw anything that said he was going to plant explosives.

Comment #9: Antigone  on  02/17  at  08:12 PM

Remember, these folks ran “stings” on Planned Parenthood, because they are GOOD CHRISTIANS who wuuuuuuv baybeez.

Hannah Giles’ father is Doug Giles, who claims to be a minister, and whose theology appears to be that women are soul-sucking monsters out to drain men of their manly essence.

yep, i think that was a large part of O’Keefe’s goals

Especially now that this has come out, I’m even more disappointed in Jon Stewart for falling for this bullshit.

Comment #12: keshmeshi  on  02/17  at  08:25 PM

If he took it back and admitted he was wrong, he would regain a lot of esteem back he’s lost in my eyes, I know that.

Comment #13: Amanda Marcotte  on  02/17  at  08:26 PM

I just read the report that Amanda linked to.  It is clear that most of the employees either sincerely tried to help within the scope of the law/their duties, and some were frightened or angry by O’Keefe and Giles.

This may be a rhetorical question, but why were these idiots given any credibility by the MSM?  Did no one think initially to question or examine the videos?  Remember what happened to Dan Rather - you’d think any journalist with two brain cells would check, check, check before running with something that just falls into their collective laps like this, even under the guise of, “well, the OTHER media outlets are reporting on this, so we should, too.” *

I guess it’s okay only if you’re a right-wing media outlet going after a community-based, low-resource organization.  They probably figured that ACORN wouldn’t have the resources to fight back.  Time to send them another check.

(*which brings to mind the old expression: “If all the OTHER kids jumped off a cliff, would YOU?”  Guess the major media outlets would.  One could hope.)

Comment #14: NobleExperiments  on  02/17  at  08:41 PM

Especially now that this has come out, I’m even more disappointed in Jon Stewart for falling for this bullshit.

Jon Stewart’s generally more sensible than most real news outlets, which is sad, but he’s disappointed me many times since the 2008 election. As just one example, he took a bullshit “fair and balanced” approach to Dr. Tiller’s murder, criticizing both sides for playing the “blame game.” It’s not playing the “blame game” to point out that anti-choice rhetoric is violent to its very core, Jon.

Comment #15: Triplanetary  on  02/17  at  08:43 PM

Has anyone heard what is going on with him lately? Are they going to press charges/go to trial soon?
What an evil man and woman these two are. Racism, sexism and classism all wrapped up in two sleazy packages.

Comment #16: pitbullgirl65  on  02/17  at  08:47 PM

O’Keefe reeminds me of Eric Stratton from Animal House, without the charm or sense of humor. On second thought, strike that comparison; it’s unkind and unfair to Eric Stratton because he wasn’t a total fucking douchebag.

Comment #17: Hornet  on  02/17  at  08:51 PM

This may be a rhetorical question, but why were these idiots given any credibility by the MSM?

Because, according to the DC Heathers, Republicans never lie.

Comment #18: MAJeff, the God of Biscuits  on  02/17  at  08:51 PM

If he took it back and admitted he was wrong

He did run a piece on the Louisiana phone-tampering escapade that included clips of media figures praising O’Keefe for the earlier stunt—and included his own praise in the montage.  That’s not entirely admitting he was wrong, but it’s admitting embarrassment.

I had no idea that O’Keefe wasn’t dressed in the “pimp” “costume” at the time the videos were shot.  There’s something quintessentially frat-preppie-douchebag about coming up with a stunt that involves The Girl dressing up sexxay and the guy just going about his routine.  It’s on the continuum with baiting drunk women into kissing.

Comment #19: FlipYrWhig  on  02/17  at  09:15 PM

This is absolutely the core base of the current Repulsivecan party - white men who think that women and minorities are simply resources to be used and discarded.  They not only approve of this asshole’s activities, they believe in what he’s doing, ad they have no problem with him lying to make his point - after all, their exalted leader Palin said death panels were real, just to make a point, or something.

The Republican party has embraced the fundamentalists, bigots, and woman haters.

Comment #20: attack_laurel  on  02/17  at  09:19 PM

Take a look at the Congressional GOP. The Republican Party IS the fundamentalists, bigots, and woman haters.

Comment #21: MAJeff, the God of Biscuits  on  02/17  at  09:25 PM

This may be a rhetorical question, but why were these idiots given any credibility by the MSM?

Because they’re conservatives.

No, really, that’s it.  There was absolutely nothing else about them or their story that would have given them any credibility with the media.

Comment #22: Mnemosyne  on  02/17  at  09:44 PM

I still cannot believe that the Democrats while controlling both houses of Congress put it to a vote and stripped ACORN of funds.

They register low income voters (obviously why R’s hate them) - out of pure self-interest, couldn’t they at least make up some kind of excuse about getting the facts and holding hearings? They could have subpoenaed (and still can) everything or just wait until the heat died down.

Some State Dept contractor was running a underage prostitution ring and I have seen no follow up. God knows what shit blackwater has done.

Comment #23: bay of arizona  on  02/17  at  09:45 PM

I certainly hope some media outlet, preferably CNN, steps up to show Boehlert’s story.

He’s already done all the work.

Comment #24: Eric_RoM  on  02/17  at  10:00 PM

I can’t help but think of Jon Stewart’s conversation with Tucker Carlson - “the show after me is puppets making prank phone calls!”  He’s still on Comedy Central, and while the whole show slants lefty, he’s never declared himself a progressive or a journalist.  His job is to make fun of the news, not fact check.  We can wring our hands and say “oh noes, Jon Stewart betrayed us with his sloppy newscasting!” all we want, but in reality the man owes accuracy nothing.  If all the news outlets and Congress got boonswoggled, Jon is the last person in line for a scolding.

Comment #25: Kyso K  on  02/17  at  10:32 PM

Also, people who think sex trafficking is a joke are scary people.

Not to me. I just think of them as pathetic and contemptible.

Thanks for this post. I’d heard about the tricky editing stuff, but I didn’t realize the little punk just lied out his ass like this.

Comment #26: Bitter Scribe  on  02/17  at  11:08 PM

This is something that should be spread to the entire media and forced to be aired.  Send letters of it to congress, news outlets, and generally anybody willing to listen.  I knew from the get-go that the tapes were heavily edited, anybody with more than a third grade education could see that.  But having proof is all the better.  I pray the ACLU & ACORN file a suit against them for defamation and let him defend it from his federal prison cell.

Comment #27: Xeranar  on  02/17  at  11:20 PM

“We can wring our hands and say “oh noes, Jon Stewart betrayed us with his sloppy newscasting!” all we want, but in reality the man owes accuracy nothing.”

I think it’s more that it comes off like a cheap shot at an unfairly demonized non-profit based on smoke, mirrors, and patent bullshit.

Comment #28: preying mantis  on  02/17  at  11:34 PM

@25

I fully recognize that Jon Stewart is not actually a newsman and that holding him to some higher standard of journalism than even our fucked up media is essentially admitting that the 4th Estate is irrecoverably failed.

However, I criticize him because he should have known better, perhaps even better than most. Why? Most of his shtick is the careful editing of video and clips for comedic effect. The segment story interview pieces with the various correspondents especially is nothing but mish mashing words to make things even more ridiculous. From a purely technical standpoint he should have been able to notice the tell-tale marks of bad editing from miles away (apparently actual film majors could spot immediately that O’Keefe’s vocals were added later). It’s getting punked by your own shtick and that’s just deliberately being sloppy because Stewart was worrying he had been too rough on conservatives at the time for retaining their high level of abdurdity. I hope he feels bad about it now.

On the full details I’m not surprised. Remember, his star first rose on the ludicrous “audio tape” that “proved” that Planned Parenthood has no purpose than trying to trick black women into having lots of abortions.

He’s pretty much a racist, sexist, classist sociopath who gets off on using mediocre film editing talents, an absolute lack of anything approaching a soul, a willingness to lie off his ass, and the massive free pass anyone halfway competent on the right gets just for being a right-winger who can tie his shoes (see also Dick Cheney). He’s probably not even going to see the inside of a prison for his little Watergate Junior stunt and that’s a shame. He needs to be shut down hard by the adult world because this is the type of nasty personality that ends up poisoning the body politic for generations. This is the latest Paul Cameron or Dick Cheney.

Sure, but let’s say he caught it and chose to take that angle on his show.  Would that have changed a damn thing?  Probably not - we (heart) our smart and sexy Jon Stewart, but I don’t think that translates into real influence on the floor of Congress.  And anything that should be obvious to the Daily Show’s staff should probably also be obvious to CNN, or hell, even a reasonably intelligent intern at your local affiliate station.  ACORN got thrown under the bus fast, I don’t think the Daily Show could have embarrassed the real newsmen quickly enough to matter.  Embarrassing the real newsmen into doing their job should not be his.

Back on topic, I too would like to see someone sued into the ground over this.

James O’Keefe is going to be receiving an award at CPAC this weekend - “XPAC Annual Award for Impact”.  And they’re also going to give their conventioneers the opportunity to beat a pinata of Nancy Pelosi with a stick.  Because they just love powerful women.

Fucking douchebags.

You just answered your own question. Dan Rather was uncareful reporting about the right, so he was made to pay the price. Nobody suffers for falsely maligning the left.  The media knows they can go after progressives with impunity, facts be damned.

Just for shits and giggles, it would be an interesting experiment to see if we could get someone in the MSM fired using the facts of the O’Keefe case.

“I still cannot believe that the Democrats while controlling both houses of Congress put it to a vote and stripped ACORN of funds. “

I agree.  The million dollar question is, why?  Why on earth would Democrats vote to strip ACORN of funding without first subpoenaing (sp?) the unedited vidoe, fer chrissakes?!

And yes, where are all the news outlets on this?  It’s not like it would be the first time the media did a major flip flop and pretended the previous instance never existed, so what are they worried about.

This is yet another example of the seething worms you’ll find when you turn over the rocks in the wingnut psyche.  O’Keefe probably fantasizes all the time about being the virile, streewise pimp that capers in his imagination as a nightmare/desire object.

Comment #37: Dr. Locrian  on  02/18  at  12:44 PM

There was no “independent” investigation. The “investigators” were hand picked and paid by ACORN. You did know that, right?

What exactly did you expect them to find?

You also don’t have to guess or speculate who said what to whom. The entire, unedited audio is readily available.

Comment #38: CTD  on  02/18  at  12:51 PM

Dan Rather was uncareful reporting about the right, so he was made to pay the price.

Viacom boss Sumner Redstone had been gunning for Rather for quite some time, hoping to engineer a scandal that would torpedo Rather’s career.  Apparently Rather had spoken critically of Redstone’s affair with a secretary and Sumner didn’t appreciate the commentary.  CBS’s sloppy reporting opened the door for Redstone to lower the boom but—let’s face it—it was only a matter of time.

So we have a corporate media CEO deliberately sabotaging his own news organization for petty, personal revenge.  Liberal Media indeed.

You must believe James “Entitled White Punkass” O’Keefe III is a Great America Patriot who deserves a Medal of Honor for going Behind Enemy Lines to bring America The Truth about Our Kenyan Overlords and their nefarious schemes to destroy the Last Bastion of Freedom and Liberty on Earth!

Hey CTD, have another tasty and satisfying glass of Koolaid.  After that effort, you must be mighty thirsty…

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Even if everything O’Keefe claimed and implied, STFFW? The wrong doing of a few members of large organization means it must be destroyed is not a standard anything that doesn’t try to help poor people vote would ever be held too.

Comment #43: witless chum  on  02/19  at  01:16 PM

Not being biased, not only woman’s experience from violence but also men’s. How do I say this? It is in connection with the woman named Crystal Gale Mangum. As we can remember, she is the woman who made false claims of rape in the Duke LaCrosse Scandal. Sad to say that she has gone straight to jail for allegedly stabbing and beating her boyfriend, Milton Walker, and setting his clothes on fire. She initiated fraudulent charges against others in the past, and is now looking at very real charges against herself.
