Qs of the day - Gustav and the GOP

* Is the Bush admin’s FEMA ready this time? (It could be a Cat 4 or 5; Katrina was a 3.)

* Will the levees hold? Recently there was an investigation that uncovered the fact that newspaper was being used by a contractor hired by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to shore up levees in St. Bernard Parish.

And when he confronted the contractor, the contractor blamed Washington for the substandard work. “He basically told me when Congress sent down the money, it would be repaired the proper way.”

But during a recent trip to the area, two years later, it was apparent that didn’t happen.  Much of the newspaper had deteriorated or been eaten by bugs, but some still remained.  In fact WWL cameras even captured the date May 21, 2006, on a page of the Parade magazine from the Times-Picayune…The Corps also says it’s satisfied with the quality of work done by its contractor.  When asked by WWL if there was any shoddy work involved, Wagner said, “I don’t think so at all.”

I have little confidence that the levees will hold.

* Will the Republicans still party hard in Minneapolis while carnage goes on in the Gulf? Bobby Jindal already (understandably) canceled his plans to go to Minneapolis. How will it look as the 45K or so attendees are whooping it up?

Note on that last one—it looks as if this impending natural disaster represents bad enough PR to force a few to stay away:

President Bush is unlikely to make it to the Republican National Convention, and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) may deliver his acceptance speech via satellite because of the historically huge hurricane threatening New Orleans, top officials said.

Late Saturday night, the RNC was planning to issue a release announcing the formation of a “working group of representatives from each of the states in Hurricane Gustav’s path. The group will ensure that all affected delegates have information and assistance in real time.

...Officials of the convention, the Republican Party, the White House and the McCain campaign were all scrambling this weekend to rewrite more than a year of planning for what they had hoped would be a joyful four days starting Monday.

Even worse, the GOP plans to use this as a rebranding opportunity. Of course this is disgusting, particularly since any effort to raise money from the public to help with recovery only underscores the fact that the Republican-led government is incapable of a competent response.

What happens if there was a national convention and nobody showed?  Just wondering.

I am worried that the sleazy opportunism behind these hurricane photo ops will go unchallenged, and turn a natural disaster into a real ratings boost for the convention—I was just thinking to myself the other day, would they pull something like that.  Paranoia?  I hope so.

I really have to wonder how these people sleep at night.  Have they been emptied of all human feeling?  Are they so cold and calculating they are unable to see that real people are hurt and killed?  Is there no point where morality requires that profits be deferred in favor of human decency?

The contrast between the Reichwing’s extreme concern for a handful of cells in a woman’s womb and the callous disregard for for living people who are not a Republican voting block couldn’t be more stark…

GOTTA AGREE WITH THE DOC-ALREADY, WITH A HUGE HAND FROM THE PRESS, THE GOP IS PLANNING TO FULLY TAKE ADVANTGAE OF THIS “OPPORTUNITY”...WHY IN THE HELL IS MCCAIN AND CO GOING TO MISSISSIPPI…SO HE CAN “LOOK” PRESIDENTIAL”!!!!...AND SHOW HOW HE WOULD REACT TO AN EMERGENCY THIS TIME(INSTEAD OF EATING A CAKE WITH THE PREZ.)...ONLY POSSIBLE WITH THE HELP OF THE NEWZZIES…I GUESS INFO BLACKOUT FOR THE NEXT WEEK OR SO.

Why shouldn’t they? I’m not changing my plans (such as they are) because of events transpiring thousands of miles away. The only Republicans who ought not be in St. Paul are those in charge of emergency response, like Jindal and Bush.

Comment #6: Grumpy  on  08/31  at  12:30 PM

Grumpy—Bush may as well go to Minneapolis. It’s not as if he’d be distracted from doing anything useful.

Comment #7: Molly, NYC  on  08/31  at  12:52 PM

You’re right on, Grumpy.  Having been through Katrina and about to be going through Gustav, I don’t think it’s fair for the GOP to cancel their convention because of what’s happening here.  It’s something that’s been planned for a while and a lot of time and money will have been wasted if they postpone it.  Hell, I’m in the strike zone and we still had our wedding anniversary party last night.  Of course, after trips to Academy and Wal-Mart for supplies.  As long as those members of the GOP who need to be on the job do so, I don’t see any harm nor will take any offense at them having a party.  I mean, fuck, at least someone’s having a good time.  You know?

Well, were I the governor of a state, even one on the other side of the country, I think I’d be more concerned with what’s going on during a national disaster than being at a convention, if only to be able to offer some assistance in the aftermath. But while I’m an altruistic kind of guy, I’m also the kind of person who thinks that tossing out assistance when you can often comes back to help you when it’s your ass in the sling.

And the same scenario would hold true if I were a Congressperson or a Senator.

Hi guys—just thought I would check in and let everyone know a few things.

#1.  I’m in Louisiana.  Specifically, right on the border of Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes, which are both mandatorily evacuated.  We are not evacuating—we are staying put.  So if anyone is curious about the situation on the ground, I may be able to get out a few updates out as the hurricane approaches, before we lose wifi (there’s a generator where I am, so we should keep power throughout the storm).  I will definitely be able to get text messages, and am potentially OK with exchanging numbers with people I feel are reliable, for anyone who wants on the ground updates.

#2.  Even though I’m staying behind, the place where I am is a good place to be, relatively speaking.  I’m on high ground (for Louisiana), and we have a good roof, strong shutters, sandbags, plenty of food and water, a generator, etc.  It’s a two story house, and we’re in an area that is not expected to get an outragous amount of storm surge flooding.  So don’t worry!

#3.  Bush was just on TV, from San Antonio, TX (nowhere NEAR anywhere that is set to bear the brunt of Gustav), giving a speech that is 99% bullshit compared to what we are hearing here even from local GOP good ole boys.  Don’t listen to a fucking word he says.  And if McCain uses this as a photo op, a la Giuliani on 9/11, I will be PISSED.  Not that I’m not already, but come the fuck on.  It’s not like he can actually do anything to help anyone here, being disabled and having no local jurisdiction (and being from the fucking desert, i.e. not having any useful expertise whatsoever).

Comment #10: the opoponax  on  08/31  at  03:31 PM

I agree with Pam’s point that there will be an ensuing incompetent government response, I think a lot people rightfully feel that they cannot depend on the civil response.  Considering the situation in Mississippi wasn’t nearly that bad (thanks, of course, to the mostly deplorable Haley Barbour).  If Barbour didn’t give daily handjobs to the GOP elders, we’d have been as lost as Louisianna.  People seem to be a lot better prepared as a result, however.  The mentality here in Mississippi during Katrina was that Hurricane Camille’s death total went up due to all the old die-hards saying that since they survived Camille, they’d survive Katrina.  No one I have spoken to has said anything similar about surviving Katrina.  The National Guard is, thankfully, prowling empty streets.

opo, I think you’re nuts, but I will think good thoughts that you and yours ride it out okay.

“opo, I think you’re nuts, but I will think good thoughts that you and yours ride it out okay.”

I actually kind of admire the spunk of sticking it out, as long as it’s not obvious you’re signing your own death warrant.  (for example, you’re not living on the side of Mt. Saint Helens...)

I do sincerely hope things will go okay.  Good luck…

Comment #13: MikeEss  on  08/31  at  09:09 PM

Take care, opoponax.

As for the convention, I guess it will be “Let the good times roll” at the parties there.
