Good panel, awful recording. A lot of audio troubles in there especially before the 15 minute mark, and you were getting some pretty hellacious feedback on you rmic Amanda. =P
Still, good points about context, language and the nebulous nature of “Offense”. The final note about how the Orange County Sheriff Bust reporting was actually obscuring the news by bowlderizing the content was an excellent example.
Also, Atrios’ comments about how complaints about language are used to avoid actual debate are dead on. I see this a lot from dishonest hacks of all stripes, typically while dropping veiled insults in their own posts. Typically, the responses range from well-doncumented reference, to well argued counterpoints with snide comments, to angry people calling them thundering chundermuffins. Inevitably, the responce will be a long the line of “All you have is insults”.
Ignore facts in favor of wounded innocence is in my mind, one of the instant signifiers of a dishonest debater. It’s not the sole domain of the right, but since so much of the conservative moment is based on lies and ego right now, it’s where I see it the most.
Amanda—I was watching the video in an RSS window and read your tag describing each of the participants. I saw “Watch Amanda drink water.” I looked up just at that moment, and you were grabbing for the water pitcher. Good timing.
