AL: bar patrons allegedly ejected from bar for dancing ‘too gay’

In Tuscaloosa, Alabama, you don’t exactly expect the red carpet rolled out for LGBTs, but this alleged bold ejection from a local bar underscores the ease with which discrimination can and does occur.

Joseph: “I was in the back of the bar, Catch 22, and we were picking music by the jukebox and the female owner of the bar just kicked out my friends for dancing ‘too gay’...She proceeded to tell me that she was the owner of the bar and that if I’m to continue coming to her bar, that it’s not OK to be open because it’s not a gay bar and it never will be. And then she added that gay people disgust her.”

The folks at Catch 22 declined to comment other than to claim the incident didn’t occur, and that Joseph and his friends are welcome to return at any time.

Of course I’m now curious as to what defines “dancing too gay” in Tuscaloosa.

Hey, when you’re the only honkytonk in Tuscaloosa that plays Lynard Skynard covers of Broadway show tunes, that’s gonna happen!

I’ve been guilty of that every time I go to the club, and I’m straight.

Were they doing the Gay Voodoo Limbo Tango and Wango Dance?  Because I’ve always wanted to see that…

Maybe it was because they were dancing to this song:

I swear it’s not a Rick Roll… this video never gets old!

I believe that’s Alabamian for “at all well.”

My older son graduated from UA. Tuscaloosa is the town in In the Heat of the Night Plus a couple of bookstores and restaurants .  And add in some fratboys who would go right now and stand in the schoolhouse door.

Coolest pub crawl I ever did was in Montgomery Alabama. I lived in Maryland at the time and forgot that blacks and whites sometimes went to the same bars just as they did in Houston, where I grew up. Alabama seemed much more racially enlightened than Maryland. We briefly hit a gay bar in M’gmy, but closed the night at Sous La Terre. Except for the bartender we were the only white folks and the only people inder forty. We were also way underdressed. Best bar I’ve ever been to and best blues band I’ve ever heard and I used to hang out at the Big Easy and Four Aces in Houston. Four Aces is the place George Harrison wanted to play at before the Beatles took off.

This probably qualifies (no, not Rick Astley either).

I think that Johnathon and Derrick dancing a tango on Dancing With the Stars would count as seeming “too gay”  for that bar, but me being me, I was glad one of the local ballrooms had a group class for same sex ballroom dance partners, and think they ought to be able to dance anywhere.

“Real men don’t dance!”

Exactly. “Dancing too gay” = “Dancing at all”

I like to believe Joseph Heller would be outraged these assholes stole his title.

Hmmm. I guess the bar owner is allowed to do anything you can’t prevent her from doing.

This is really sad. I graduated from UA just two years ago, and back then Catch 22 was regularly frequented by gays. It was directly across the street from the town’s one gay club, and sometimes we would go to Catch on nights the club was closed. The staff always seemed welcoming, even if the frat types weren’t completely. Le sigh.
