John Cole writes about…
(I go away for three years, come back, and John Cole is not only making sense, but he’s a really good read? Is Digby the despotic overlord of Oakland now?)
...the “whitey” tape rumors that are tearing up the rumor mill. And by “tearing up”, I mean ping-ponging back and forth between Larry Johnson and late night weekend Fox News programming.
I am not worried about any “bombshell,” but I am tired of hearing about one. Right now, we have been subjected to days of hype, and I don’t think that is an accident. It is as if folks are simply spending weeks prepping the ground preparing people to expect a bombshell, they can release some weak nonsense, and then pretend it is a big deal. While the “bombshell” will fizzle, the psyops will have been successful enough to make people think it is a big deal even when it isn’t.
Geraldine Ferraro had one thing right - there is a lot of racial resentment on the part of many white voters towards black Americans, based in no small part on the idea that if black people insist they’re lower on the ladder than white people, any black person being ahead of any white person is de facto evidence that black people are whiny victims and white people are the true downtrodden in America.
This is indelibly stupid. But it’s also a powerful argument.
Obama is going to become Blackazoid, the Nubian Avenger, here to right all the perceived wrongs black people illegitimately feel were heaped on them since we solved racism in 1963. Reparations? He wants them. Islam? Prepare to pay a prayer mat fee for your kids’ next school year. I can’t wait to hear the shit we didn’t even know was racist - did you know Obama wants to put elastic bands on all our pants? And ban straws?
Blackness is about to become the best privilege imaginable, and stories of disadvantaged white people the new currency of the Republican realm.
Michelle Obama engaging in an alleged rant against “whitey” is just the tip of the iceberg - learn now to fear your new Negro overlords.

Basically, what we have here is an urban legend, and there’s virtually no way to debunk an urban legend, even if there’s no proof whatsoever. Ask the poor chairman of Procter & Gamble, who STILL has to deal with getting letters accusing him of being a Satanist every goddamned week even though they’ve denied it for 20 freakin’ years.
Oh, and don’t forget Noonan’s Law as followed slavishly by the press: Is it irresponsible to speculate? It would be irresponsible not to!
“...and stories of disadvantaged white people the new currency of the Republican realm.”
New? You weren’t away that long, Jesse.
Check your history, racism didn’t end until 1984 with the airing of the first episode of The Cosby Show.
...the new currency of the Republican realm.”
New? You weren’t away that long, Jesse.
Well, to be fair, it used to be the grey-market.
I’m not looking forward to President Obama and S.O.S. Sharpton extracting vengeance for that slavery thing. On the other hand, we’ll finally be able to say, at least, that we live in a “hip” country.
I thought of banning elastic pants first, because they make Jesus, er, Allah cry.
You’ve got to love (hate) the way that so many of these attacks actually focus on Michelle. She’s black .AND. a woman! Ph34r her! It’s a simultaneous attempt to demonize women and ‘emasculate’ Obama (since ‘masculinity,’ like ‘femininity’ is a virtue to the right). Depressing.
I for one welcome our new melanin-enriched overlords. How can they screw up worse than whitey has?
Thank god for the “one drop” rule. Hey, I’m black, too! Let me in on some of that negritudinal privilege!
learn now to fear your new Negro overlords.
OH GOD NO! I have feared this day my entire life. First Obama runs for President. Then Jesse comes back to Pandagon. The Historic Reversal is at hand! Why, in a hundred - two hundred years or so we might even have to deal with Negroes with powerful family connections but mediocre talents occupying positions of power and influence in this country. Where will the madness end?
“Where will the madness end?”
Young black kids all over the country will be wearing ironic t-shirts and listening to Weezer in their late-model imports.
You mark my words.
I’m of the opinion the white women do need rounding up. Haven’t you seen the commercials? They just can’t stop going wild.
I don’t know about any of you, but I for one welcome our new Black Panther overlords.
Dammit I have been, like, quadruple beaten to that punch.
I am reminded of a joke:
how many white people does it take to change a light bulb?
3
1 to call the electrician
1 to make martinis
1 to whine about this further proof that whites are the REAL victims.
oh no he di’n’t!
Obama is Black? You don’t say!
Last night I talked to a McCain-hater who plans to stay home election night because he doesn’t want to vote for the n*gger. (His words). My task: to convince him that some n*ggers are all right. Believe it or not, it’s not an impossible assignment. Strange bedfellows, etc.
One factor people have ignored so far is that both Hillary and McCain have huge negatives, even within the core of their own parties. Racism is not always the strongest irrational hatred.
That’s my message of hope for today.
Young black kids all over the country will be wearing ironic t-shirts and listening to Weezer
First they came for Weezer, and I did not object, because I was not a Weezer fan. Then they came for Pavement, and again, I did not object, because I never really followed Pavement. Then they came for Yo La Tengo. . . .
At last, I am beginning to understand the blog writer mentality. Wait for one (or several) paranoid delusional writer(s) to offer nonsense, then, offer your own paranoid delusional nonsense.
...since we solved racism in 1963 1865.
Fixed. After all, we do know that all that foofara down in the South in the early ‘60s was just more black folks whining, right?
All I want to know is: Will my uneven distribution of melanin give me any special advantages in our new, Blackazoid led society?
“All I want to know is: Will my uneven distribution of melanin give me any special advantages in our new, Blackazoid led society?”
We can tell.
We can always tell.
Yes, Jesse, your fears of a black Captain Marvel are, in their own way, just as paranoid and delusional as anything Larry Johnson says.

Luke Cage makes me cry myself to sleep, man.

Nah, Sharpton’s not an Obama guy at all—he was the one complaining early on that Obama wasn’t “black enough”, remember? Translation: Obama’s home turf is Chicago, where Jesse Jackson’s family is powerful among the AA community, whereas Sharpton is the self-appointed king of the NYC AA contingent and the guy who’s been battling the Jacksons for the title of Undisputed Leader of America’s Black People.
People forget that early on, Hillary actually had stronger ties to the black community on a national level than Obama. But then she and Bill and her people started up with the Sister-Souljah-on-steroids triangulation crap, which was amplified and elaborated upon by pro-HRC bloggers like Larry Johnson. The culmination was her shameful use of Jeremiah Wright—a man who, as Donna Brazile pointedly tried to remind her, had been gracious enough to be at her and Bill’s side in their darkest hours in September 1998.
“I’m of the opinion the white women do need rounding up. Haven’t you seen the commercials? They just can’t stop going wild.
whatever”
the next time you see an older white woman, and she looks like she’s been beaten down by life, who’s husband has left, or at the very least won’t have sex with her.
That older white woman, she’s gotten ugly because her attitude has made is so, who hates men and blames men for all their misfortunes.
And there are millions upon millions of these bitter women.
These are the Hillary supporters.

Obama got 49 percent of Illinois Republicans to vote for him in 2004, so it’s by no means an impossible task. I suspect that the thinking for at least some of the downstaters was, “Why the hell should I vote for an out-of-state n*gger when I can vote for an Illinois n*gger?” but it’s a start.
Un-snarky comment (sorry about that): John Cole’s transformation restores some of my faith in humanity. I think it took a lot of guts to admit that he was basically wrong about everything forever, and he has emerged as one of the smarter, more sensible voices in the blogosphere.
Negro dude extroardinaire!
Blackazoid! Blackazoid!
Don’t wear magic underwear!
Blackazoid! Blackazoid!
Goin’ to Washington, D.C.!
Blackazoid! Blackazoid!
(Unless kneecapped by Hillary)
Blackazoid! Blackazoid!
His mojo overloading
Sends wingnut brains exploding!
Appalachia’s paranoid!
Blackazoid! Blackazoid!…
Shaft’s sex appeal!
Huey P. Newton’s black power message!
Alice Walker’s literary prowess
Zulu Nation’s funk!
Allen Iverson’s athleticism!
Mike Tyson’s ferocity!
Hey, Egg, I (who also am a white man!) am praying you got that joke from some site where I can go to find a couple dozen similar ones. Please tell me it’s true? Got a lotta rw friends I’d love to tell them to.
“I think it took a lot of guts to admit that he was basically wrong about everything forever, and he has emerged as one of the smarter, more sensible voices in the blogosphere.”
One knee-jerk Bush-supporting blog-o-pundit down, 257,000 more blogging wingnuts to go…
John Cole’s been on my to-read list for a while. I think there was only one drop of Republican humility left and John used it…
learn now to fear your new Negro overlords
I share the same sentiments as Steve LaBonne, for I too welcome our *ahem* Negro *ahem* overlords.
Thank god for the “one drop” rule. Hey, I’m black, too! Let me in on some of that negritudinal privilege!
Ha! ::points to self:: Half-Black, mo-fo!

And may I add that I’m truly afraid to find out how many people I am related to, know, live in close proximity to, work with, etc., who will not vote for Obama for some reason that sounds high-minded to them but boils down to simple racism.
I starts with my own father and goes down from there. And man am I embarrassed/disgusted/sickened/disappointed…
We know the “Bradley Effect” is real - but we don’t know just how big it is nationwide…
Obama is Black? You don’t say!
cynic on 06/03
I remember back so long ago (it seems like only a month or two ago) when even using those words in the same paragraph were just asking for attacks of racism, divisiveness, blah blah mwah mwah. And heaven forbid they don’t like the tint in a picture you’ve posted!
The true irony was when I once pointed out an advertisement run by the Obama campaign… featuring a black and white picture. O...M...G…
IMO, it’s not an issue to either promote OR to flee from. It’s simply a matter of fact. If someone is such a bigot they refuse to vote in their nation’s best interest only because the best candidate is a black man (or any minority, really)… then not only do I pity them, but on a certain level I question the wisdom of even letting people like that have a say in affairs of state.
Racism and other divisive matters are just playing into the “wedge issue” strategy which has allowed the Republican Criminal Empire to install a junta of radical zealots into all levels of the federal government. People still beholden to those wedge issues seriously can’t be considered informed and intelligent voters… so do we really need them? Pandering to an ignorant electorate is a conservative ideal, not a liberal one- and since it isn’t what we are about, I say don’t even dabble in it.
There are more than enough people out there who have managed to overcome their previous racist feelings in preference for a better world. THAT is the kind of person we should be concerned with, rather than in making a good candidate “more palatable” for the racist (or Armageddonist, or religious zealot, or conservative dead-ender) skewing demographic.
But to be honest, the Obama camp has stopped with the cries of racism, which is good. Because mark my words, the conservatives are going to go ALL OUT with their race baiting this election cycle. They are cornered rats on a burning ship, at their most desperate of desperate circumstances. I also predict they are going to go all-out with vote rigging as well, but as in 2006, even that isn’t going to be enough to save them.
I just hope that this time, Democrats hold the conservatives responsible for their crimes, rather than wimping out and letting them off the hook. Conservatives are glad to put innocent people in prison, so why do democrats keep letting people off the hook who should rightfully be in prison? Had Nixon not been pardonned, and Reagan/Bush’s crimes not been ignored, this would be an entirely different world today.
Trying to think of a scandal that would be enough for Obama to drop out of the race, and all I can think of is that he’s actually a cyborg sent back in time by SkyNet. Notice how he doesn’t allow dogs at his rallies. Seems pretty suspicious to me.
“And there are millions upon millions of these bitter women.
These are the Hillary supporters.”
Okay. Now what’s the reason for your none-too-attractive bitterness and rage?
I think it took a lot of guts to admit that he was basically wrong about everything forever,
Which act instantly put him head and shoulders over most of the commentators we see in our papers and hear on TV and the radio.
and he has emerged as one of the smarter, more sensible voices in the blogosphere.
He always had potential—he always was capable of writing sensible stuff. But he had a lot of bad programming to work through. The fact that he did it himself, and reasoned the truth out for himself, makes him a stronger writer because it makes him more sure of himself—when he says something, it’s not just parrotting what somebody else said, it’s because he’s vetted it himself and reasoned it out himself.
“the next time you see an older white woman, and she looks like she’s been beaten down by life, who’s husband has left, or at the very least won’t have sex with her.
That older white woman, she’s gotten ugly because her attitude has made is so, who hates men and blames men for all their misfortunes.

Wow.
No.
Oh, crap. I’m white and my wife is Asian. We are SO screwed…
“People still beholden to those wedge issues seriously can’t be considered informed and intelligent voters… so do we really need them? Pandering to an ignorant electorate is a conservative ideal, not a liberal one...”
If they didn’t vote, I’d agree. The problem is they often DO vote.
Given that they will probably not become sane before they meet their maker, the only way to cope is GOTV to get younger, more tolerant people to counter the ignorant racist vote…
And I say that as a soon to be 48-year old who knows all too well the rancid depths of racism among the “Real Americans” out there…
“Trying to think of a scandal that would be enough for Obama to drop out of the race, and all I can think of is that he’s actually a cyborg sent back in time by SkyNet.”
Hey, that hasn’t stopped SwartzenBush from being governor of California…
Obama got 49 percent of Illinois Republicans to vote for him in 2004
And therein lies the answer!! Get McCain to wear blackface, and start comparing National Health Care to slavery.
the next time you see an older white woman, and she looks like she’s been beaten down by life, who’s husband has left, or at the very least won’t have sex with her.
I’ve seen some of these women. They are often quite hot. I’d like to have sex with them. Wait… since I’m technically a black man, would that affect Obama’s chances in November?
Oh, never mind. I’m married anyway.
Obama’s home turf is Chicago, where Jesse Jackson’s family is powerful among the AA community, whereas Sharpton is the self-appointed king of the NYC AA contingent and the guy who’s been battling the Jacksons for the title of Undisputed Leader of America’s Black People.
Wait, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharton control Alcoholics Anonymous?
Huh. I did not know that.
Dorothy: Ha!
Seriously, though: Go back and Google “Sharpton Obama” and look for stuff written back in 2007, stuff like this:
Sharpton tears into Obama
‘Why shouldn’t the black community ask questions?’
March 13, 2007
Activist Al Sharpton lit into presidential candidate Barack Obama on Monday, suggesting Obama shouldn’t take blacks’ support for granted.
“Why shouldn’t the black community ask questions? Are we now being told, ‘You all just shut up?’” Sharpton told a TV reporter from a New York CBS station.
“I’m not going to be cajoled or intimidated by any candidate,” said Sharpton, a New Yorker who ran for president in 2004.
So no, Obama and Sharpton aren’t going to be having any cuddlefests anytime soon. Especially as Obama has a distinct distaste for drama, and Al Sharpton’s all about the drama, as his recent escapades have shown yet again.
Larry Johnson goes by “Lulu” now?
They turned Mr. Terrific black!
They turned Nick Fury black!
They turned Dr. Dolittle black!
They turned The Nutty Professor black!
They turned the Honeymooners black!
They turned Cary Grant into Denzel Washington (and Loretta Young into Whitney Houston!)
And just last year, they turned Charlton Heston into Will Smith!
And they turned George Burns into Morgan Freeman! Twice!
And now the signals are coming FROM INSIDE THE ROOM!
What, nobody has yet made the obvious line? Okay, I will…
“What’s a Nubian?”
Blackness is about to become the best privilege imaginable, and stories of disadvantaged white people the new currency of the Republican realm.
This isn’t a new strategy. It would have worked just as well against Hillary. In fact, raising the specter of women’s inability to control their thirst for revenge was one of the arguments used to deny women the vote until 1920.
Forgive me for not knowing what dilwad’s deal is. Was that bitter women stuff supposed to be ironic?
White Supremacy and Black Supremacy
White Supremacy has always used as its mainstay the notion that it is the only alternative to Black Supremacy. One of the two races must, according to this view, hold the whip, and if we don’t, they will. It doesn’t matter that this isn’t even plausible, much less a logically necessary condition. It’s part of the mythology.
the next time you see an older white womanman , and he looks like he’s been beaten down by life, who’s husband wife has left, or at the very least won’t have sex with him.
These are the McCain supporters.
Fixed it for ya.
“Hi United States, this is your neighbor, Canada. Ca-na-da. Yeah! Right next door. No. The >other< next door. No, the British moved out years ago. We got stuck with their furniture. Yes, the hot French girl who can’t make up her mind is still here. No, I don’t want to know what you did with her in the 50’s, thanks. No, I don’t know Joe in Lethbridge, but I’ll be sure to let him know you asked about a steady supply of ‘stuff’, I think he’s cooking up some right now. I can see you are busy with this reality TV stuff, so I’ll be quick: Can we have a cup or so of this Blackazoid stuff? We’re trying to cook up some Mojo for the 21st century and we’re running quite a bit short. Thanks!”
“I did not object, because I never really followed Pavement. Then they came for Yo La Tengo. . . .”
Actually, I was okay with it until they came for Mission of Burma.
Why, in a hundred - two hundred years or so we might even have to deal with Negroes with powerful family connections but mediocre talents occupying positions of power and influence
Permit me to introduce you to Congresswoman Kilpatrick’s son Kwame . . .
Agreed, and agreed.
Oh noes… I’m so pale I glow, so I am /so/ doomed. Can’t even tan enough to try to pass.
Maybe I can try and convince him that my ancestors were the oppressed-white sorts (like, the starving irish) and the harmless canadians, and see if they’ll just go get drunk with me? As a peace offering?
I’m both surprised and not surprised that some astute wingnut has not, in a fit of hysterical idiocy, discovered the opening lines to Parliament’s “Chocolate City”: “They call it the White House, but that’s a temporary condition” and just proceeded to shit an assortment of bricks, Tiffany cufflinks and pinecones over it.
I discovered Balloon Juice at about the time of the Schiavo fiasco, which is what really started John’s break with the Republican mindset. He couldn’t believe the nuttiness that was going on, and well, it just snowballed from there.....probably helped by his crowd of snarky (and profane) commentators.
Every now and then someone puts up something mindboggingly stupid from the Nutty Right ("the Fair Tax") and it gets torn to pieces, educating the person-who-posted-it in the process....
“Blackazoid, the Nubian Avenger”
Laughed for almost an hour… I’ll have to use that as a screen/game name!
Hey Fourmorewars (who is also a white man!):
Sadly, I heard this joke before there was a world wide web. I can’t remember who told me the joke. I do remember the first time I repeated it.
I was at work and some of my colleagues were telling jokes. Some at the expense of others who were not like them. I was gearing up to once again start the “that isn’t appropriate...” speech when one of them sheepishly said “I guess we’re getting a little politically incorrect...”
I answered “Excellent, we are telling politically incorrect jokes! Here’s one...”
They didn’t think it was funny AT ALL.

But THAT was. Bhwah hah hah!
“First they came for Weezer, and I did not object, because I was not a Weezer fan. Then they came for Pavement, and again, I did not object, because I never really followed Pavement. Then they came for Yo La Tengo. . . .”
You could probably go on like that for a few thousand words
Actually, Cole’s just as crazy about Clinton as he’s traditionally been about Democrats in general. It’s just that Clinton’s earned some of it, even if his vision of Clinton is more than a little bit unhinged.
Otherwise, he’s been pretty good for a while now. I even read him before his “turn” because he was at least the most sane person spouting the crazy stuff.
My father in law is somewhat of a bigot. And I know his fear is that the Obama will do everything for the blacks and nothing for the whites. This is of course ridiculous. But that is the fear of some people out there. They also think that the blacks will become “uppity” Also ridiculous and offensive.
Last night I watched as Obama worked the room, shaking at hands raised overhead. The secret service didn’t allow a lot of touching. But a small black boy was up front, and he hugged Obama. I felt so happy. I felt like African Americans could maybe trust this country now. Somehow, we let African Americans know that this is their country, too. And they can truly aspire to be anything. I hope this doesn’t sound rascist. I really, really don’t mean it to be. I am thrilled with our nominee. He truly is hope for many Americans, white and black.
“My father in law is somewhat of a bigot. And I know his fear is that the Obama will do everything for the blacks and nothing for the whites. This is of course ridiculous. I suspect there are a hell of a lot of “Real Americans” who feel the same. And I’m proud & pissed when I realize just far our racial/cultural/religious relations have come in the last 50-years (a long ways, but not nearly far enough...).
My own father is freaked by Obama, and when I’ve tried to get him to tell me why, he cuts off the conversation (discussion/argument/pre-fight) because he knows we’ll get into a shouting match.
I’m sure if he told the truth, I’d find beneath his fear of Obama is a whole lot of good old-fashioned racist bullshit. And I don’t think my father is alone in this by any means. But it does make me sick.
Whoever get POTUS for the next 4-years will inherit one of the largest steaming piles of crap ever passed on from one president to the next. I feel sorry for whoever wins the election.
Okay, I wouldn’t feel sorry for McCain if he gets it - but I would feel sorry for Obama. If he wins, his every move will be scrutinized to an incredible degree. The formerly snoozing press will go back to their pointless hypervigilence (last seen when used against Bill Clinton and the Penis Of Destiny). Stupid bullshit like the Jeremiah Wright non-story will be a daily/weekly phenomenon.
But no matter. Obama asked for it, deserves it, and if granted the opportunity, will (I’m sure) do a hell of a job under the circumstances.
I just wish it was clearer that American bigotry won’t stop him from getting a chance to try…
I think it took a lot of guts to admit that he was basically wrong about everything forever, and he has emerged as one of the smarter, more sensible voices in the blogosphere.
My take on John Cole: it’ll be a good day when he re-registers as a Republican—or considers it—because it’ll mean that the range of American politics has been sufficiently re-calibrated for him to feel comfortable there. That’s actually a good thing, because politics requires sane people on the other side to remain healthy.
I look at that image and remember why I started reading this blog in the first place. Please, Jesse, some comparisons between politicians and the Rock n Roll Express.
Whoever wins the election this year had better be some kind of superhero or the election will be for only a single term. You KNOW whoever it is will be intensely scrutinized from the outset as to how much of the steaming pile of shit left in the Oval Office has been cleaned up daily. There will be a large (and unreasonable) expectation by the electorate that a mess that took 8 years to generate should be cleaned up in 6 months. And if it ain’t all gone in 4 years, then whoever is the President, WILL be.
I think its part of the right wing conservative agenda thats trying to get him elected. If the religious right gets him elected now, they can point to all the homo’s getting married in california thats disgraced the concept of marriage, and then blame all the liberals for voting for a black guy, so when the NEXT election comes around, and everyone has long forgotten about Shrub, they can point to the blacks and the homos as the reason the country has gone down the drain, and that only a god fearing straight white man should EVER be elected.
Its simple election strategy. Let em win now so we can make him look bad later.
Great post. Welcome back.
Andrew Sullivan has also undergone a (partial) metamorphosis. Oh, and Scott Mclellan, or so I hear. Other than that, you haven’t missed much.
According to HillBuzz, the Michelle Obama whitey tape is a DVD made of a Rainbow/PUSH conference panel she was on in June 2004, which was for sale until March 2008 on the Trinity UCC website, when it was scrubbed.
Nothing ever really goes away on the internet though. So I hopped over to the trusty Wayback Machine, and looked up the archives for Trinity UCC’s main website, as well as their online store. I went all the way through all the archives. No sign of such a DVD.
It’s a hoax.
Clinton supporters are spouting the right’s bullsh*t about Obama, and Obama supporters are spewing the right’s bullsh*t about Clinton. Ian Walsh at FDL is right. We’ve all been played by the rightwing machine.
