All those pills are different pills

Here’s the last of the four videos we’ve released in the RH Reality Check series about reproductive rights.  This one is about the difference between emergency contraception, the birth control pill and the abortion pill, and why right wingers are trying to confuse you about it.

They aren’t birth control pills ...they’re FREEDOM PILLS!

Why does the right hate freedom so much?

If The Pill isn’t giving me abortions then it just isn’t as fun anymore.  Damn you for dashing my childhood hopes.

When I tried to play the video, a message flashed informing me it no longer exists. What gives?

Comment #3: Bill S  on  09/16  at  06:06 PM

Dunno.  Try again, it’s working for me.

Comment #4: Amanda Marcotte  on  09/16  at  06:08 PM

Mine says “SUCKER - vimeo drank your milkshake”.

I guess it keeps going up and down.  Working to get a YouTube alternative.

I really like these videos, you’re preaching to the choir, but they’re still fun.

Comment #7: Mighty Ponygirl  on  09/16  at  06:47 PM

i did my senior project in design on Plan B. I had to spend far too much of my time explaining to the faculty reviewing me that they weren’t the same drug.

Comment #8: Lauren  on  09/16  at  06:51 PM

Well, you may be preaching to the choir, but I learned something.  I thought the reason why people confuse the two was because the active drug was the same as RU-486, but I didn’t realize that they use a different dosage of a birth control pill, too (and more commonly, it seems, according to Wikipedia).

Thanks for making these,

Sujal

Thanks!  I was eager to make this one, because I do see a lot of pro-choicers who don’t realize that the attacks on contraception are so scientifically inaccurate as to be considered blatant lies.  So this was an opportunity to help.  Not that I blame anyone for being confused about how EC works.  Right wingers really got ahead of us in getting their lies out there, and so it’s been a clusterfuck of confusion.  It bothers me is that some women who might have moral objections to abortion might refuse to take EC on incorrect information.  I’m not willing to throw women to the wolves because their religious leaders have hoodwinked them on abortion.

To respond seriously, I appreciate that, because I, although politically leaning pro-choice these days (it’s the only issue I am personally conflicted about - but the arguments on how a pro-choice government reduces abortions are convincing enough for me), would never, ever have an abortion personally, and I am the kind of person who didn’t know that kind of thing.  Thank you.

Comment #11: INTPagan  on  09/16  at  08:14 PM

Thanks, INT.  And really, what women who don’t consider early term abortion troubling at all (me) and women who have problems with it personally (like yourself) have in common is that we sure as hell would rather avoid having to be in the position of making the choice in the first place.  Which is exactly why assholes who lie about contraception can rightfully be considered misogynists.

One pill stops ovulation
It’s daily, and it’s small
And another stops implantation
But that’s not how Plan B works at all

Go ask Amanda
She knows about all!

Not bad, and very good information.

Comment #14: LongHairedWeirdo  on  09/17  at  01:40 AM

i swear this whole conversation makes me scream!!!!!!!!

birth control, herbally at least, is THOUSANDS of years old!!! why are they making a big deal of it NOW?? it has NOTHING to do with “saving lives”. nope, its about punishing women who like sex. with LIES. evil hurtful lies.

/rant

thank you for working so hard to counter the lies

Is there a transcript of this somewhere? Audio is hard for me to understand.

I’d like to be able to send this to my mom, who not only seems to believe that EC is abortion, but that birth control pills are abortion. (“Abortifacients”.) So far I haven’t been able to get through to her that there’s a difference between making the reproductive system inhospitable to conception and killing zygotes. I need something that gets past, “I’ve had lots of kids and you haven’t had any,” too.

Fantastic.  These vids are great.

Nenya, based on your mom’s logic, a dove or pigeon knows more about aerodynamics than a PhD in the same subject.
