Comment #1: wapsie  on  11/04  at  08:03 PM

I have this big presentation I am supposed to do on thursday, on which a job may ride. and I am sitting here unable to do a damn things towards it because of all this election excitement. too much! just tell me who wins already!

Comment #2: sylvie  on  11/04  at  08:29 PM

i can’t comment on the liveblog, i’ve posted a bunch and none have gone through.

Comment #3: jessilikewhoa  on  11/04  at  08:45 PM

I couldn’t comment either.  :-(  I know we have a firewall here at work, so I wonder if that’s the reason.

Comment #4: Mnemosyne  on  11/04  at  08:51 PM

I’m stuck at work for another 2 hours so no drinking for me yet.  At home we have a chilled bottle of champagne if things go well and a couple bottles of rum if they don’t.  Either way, I’m working with a hangover tomorrow.

Comment #5: Mnemosyne  on  11/04  at  08:54 PM

my only theory on why i can’t comment is that i have comcast internet, so perhaps i’ve used up my allocated share of bandwidth this month.

i don’t drink, but i may have to take a xanax, as i’m a gigantic ball of nerves.

Comment #6: jessilikewhoa  on  11/04  at  09:00 PM

Damian here.  The comment feature isn’t working for me, either.

Comment #7: Phage  on  11/04  at  09:02 PM

i wonder if the reason pat buchanan isn’t on msnbc tonight is they feared he may keel over with a heart attack on air.

Comment #8: jessilikewhoa  on  11/04  at  09:04 PM

jessilikewhoa: No, he’s there.  I’m hoping he does keel over - it’d be great TV!

Comment #9: Phage  on  11/04  at  09:10 PM

he looks like hes going to cry, this is amazing!

Comment #10: jessilikewhoa  on  11/04  at  09:12 PM

eh, Pat Buchanan always looks like he’s going to keel over. Has for years.

Comment #11: Indy  on  11/04  at  09:21 PM

Maybe tonight will be the shock that does him in at last.

Comment #12: Phage  on  11/04  at  09:29 PM

Do you have to give us moderator approval or something to be able to comment in the liveblog? Because i’d like to play too, if there’s room.

Fucking Kentucky.

I’m trying to convince my son it’s not over just b/c the score is 8 to 3.

We’re not doing the Grant park thing b/c there’s no way he could stand for 5 hours or more waiting for B. Hussein to show up.

Comment #17: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  11/04  at  09:36 PM

Indiana, kiss everything that makes your state work goodbye.

Comment #22: Damian  on  11/04  at  09:40 PM

Comment #23: jessilikewhoa  on  11/04  at  09:45 PM

It’s probably a glitch, but right now the Yahoo! livemap is showing Obama ahead in both Carolinas, not just North Carolina.

It won’t last, but it was pretty cool to see.

Comment #24: Mnemosyne  on  11/04  at  09:45 PM

SC for McCain.

Just spent the last 5 minutes explaining time zones and poll closing times to my son.  Showing him 538’s projections and how nothing unexpected has happened yet.

It calmed me down, too.

Comment #25: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  11/04  at  09:49 PM

538 wasnt enough to calm me, had to pop half a xanax, still bouncing in my chair

Comment #26: jessilikewhoa  on  11/04  at  09:50 PM

Obama has 54% of the vote in Florida with 9% reporting.

That just drives me nuts.  What 9%?  Does that number mean anything?  Why is my neck so tight?

Comment #27: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  11/04  at  09:52 PM

I need alcohol, but the kids aren’t asleep yet.

Ooh, that reminds me, we still have a “Battling Bush” blow-up doll from 2004.  The cats we had at the time were too elderly to be interested, but I think we can get our big ol’ Maine Coon mix to beat it up a little.

Or should we save that pleasure for Inauguration Day?

INTPagan, my coworker got CNN streaming live on her desktop, but we have pretty fast internet here in the office.  Sometimes working for evil multinational corporations pays off.

Comment #46: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  11/04  at  10:10 PM

Yeah, but I can’t play the streams because my daughter is watching a They Might Be Giants DVD so that I can do this and drink in peace.  I have to wait a half an hour or so until bedtime.  Damn.

I mean, I love my daughter, and all of this is for both of my kids (and everyone else’s), but if there was one night I wish I had a sitter so that I could get trashed and worry, this is it.  It doesn’t help that my boyfriend has to work.  Lame.

Comment #47: INTPagan  on  11/04  at  10:10 PM

Oh, I’m never moving back there, but if Indiana could come to its senses for one night…

Comment #48: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  11/04  at  10:11 PM

Comment #50: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  11/04  at  10:13 PM

David Gregory just said that white college educated people have never gone Democratic before.

Who knew educated white folk were so stupid?  Or maybe it was just selfishness.

Damn straight we are!! *So glad her state decided to be sane.*

Comment #55: luzzleanne  on  11/04  at  10:17 PM

We need eggs.  I’ve always got a stockpile of cake mix in the house.  Buy it in bulk when it’s on sale for 99 cents.  (big family + inlaws in town—it’s always someone’s birthday)

Comment #56: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  11/04  at  10:17 PM

google vegan egg substitutes, you can usually use yogurt or applesauce

Comment #57: jessilikewhoa  on  11/04  at  10:18 PM

I shoulda made cake.

What you really shoulda made was a nice Schadenfreude Pie.

If I’m feeling ambitious enough once I get off work, I may try one myself.

Comment #58: Mnemosyne  on  11/04  at  10:18 PM

Key Lime yogurt probably won’t cut it.

What is with David Gregory’s pinstripes?  Is it some strange homage to Chicago?

Comment #59: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  11/04  at  10:19 PM

do you have flax seeds?

Comment #60: jessilikewhoa  on  11/04  at  10:20 PM

or bananas or silken tofu?

Comment #61: jessilikewhoa  on  11/04  at  10:22 PM

Actually, if you have white cake mix, Key Lime yogurt would make a tasty margarita cake (or cupcakes).  If you have mint extract, you could call it mojito cake.

Comment #62: Mnemosyne  on  11/04  at  10:23 PM

I do have bananas, but we’re in desperate need of a grocery run.

Comment #63: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  11/04  at  10:24 PM

Palm Beach fucked up the voting ballots again.  People didn’t understand how to connect the boxes and checked them or circled them.

Assholes.

Comment #64: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  11/04  at  10:25 PM

Bananas
How to use it:
1/2 banana blended until smooth or mashed well= 1 egg.
Bananas work wonders as an egg replacer in baking, which is the reason many banana bread recipes don’t require eggs. They hold the air bubbles well, make things nice and moist, and impart a nice flavor. However, you don’t want everything tasting like banana, so use in things where the taste won’t be intrusive. I’ve also noticed that baked goods using banana brown very nicely.

When it works best:
Quick breads, muffins, cakes, pancakes

Tip: Make sure bananas are nice and ripe and have started to brown.

Comment #65: jessilikewhoa  on  11/04  at  10:25 PM

To clarify—the people making the ballots are the assholes.  The people trying to vote are just trying to exercise their rights.

Comment #66: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  11/04  at  10:26 PM

i’ve used non-browned bananas fine before. chocolate cake with banana is fantastic

Comment #67: jessilikewhoa  on  11/04  at  10:26 PM

Oooh.  According to Ann Curry, of the 25% of NC white voters who said race was a factor, 30% of them STILL voted for Obama.

B/c Crazy Grampa is just that bad.

Comment #68: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  11/04  at  10:28 PM

According to Yahoo! Political Dashboard, Obama is kicking ass in Ohio, 320K to 162K.  Behind in Indiana, though, by almost 60K.

Sincerely, I feel you - I live in TX, grew up here, and am sick of the South - but, at the same time, there are people there who voted for Obama, and there are people there who voted the way that they do because they are uneducated.  Let’s give them hope instead.

Comment #203: Rebecca  on  11/05  at  02:53 AM

It’s a pity that Steve Gilliard couldn’t have lived to see this.  It was in large part his rabble-rousing that kept me going in those early Bush years.  I think even a big, stoic guy like him would have been overcome tonight.

By the way, Pepperpants, which sounds worse: a dilationa nd extraction (the actual name of what you’re talking about, not the scare-term you anti-choicers use), or living life without your legs because you get them blown off in a meaningless war?

Unlife being unlife, or life becoming unlife?  Which is worse, troll?

There’s a reason the Republican Party doesn’t like him.  He isn’t douchy enough.  Remember when they Boo’ed him after he defended Obama from the crazy “He’s an Arab” lady?

Pepperpants, I know you’re stupid and a liar, but try to make your lies convincing.  Medical science says nothing about “life beginning at conception”.  Only religions and liars say that.

So why don’t you find that bag of penii I’ve been talking about?

Comment #221: Damian  on  11/05  at  05:04 AM

I missed:
Emma Goldman
Bill Heywood
The struggle for free speech (look into union organizing at the turn of the century)
Fredrick Douglass (who ran for president with a female(who couldn’t vote) vice president)).
FDR (Love or hate him, he kept the Bolsheviks from getting a foothold, and provided jobs to American citizens)
JFK
RFK (I wish I could have seen the results of your convictions)
And was barely aware for Carter.

I feel proud today to experience seeing the first brown man be elected into High office in the USA. I was able to be part of history today, and I have never been more proud to be a citizen of the United States, than I have today. Today, we saw past the dog and pony show, and voted for our collective best interest, we supported the person who we felt was best qualified, and that’s how it should be.

To everyone who participated today I thank you, across party lines, I thank you for participating in the democracy we desire to be a model of for the rest of the world.

Oh, BTW….... Can we please work together for our collective self interest? PLEASE?!?!?!?!?!

Just walked back from the Grant Park Rally and what can I say?

I’m absolutely speechless at the beauty of it all.

What a night.  I’ll remember it for the rest of my life, and I’ll always know that I stood not 100 yards away from the first African-American President-Elect of the United States as he humbly accepted his victory before a crowd of ecstatic supporters with that magnifecent Chicago skyline in the background.

I. WAS. THERE.

And should I ever have grandkids, damn right I’ll tell them proudly.

Euphoria.  That’s the only feeling I know right now.

I’m in Johannesburg on business, hence 7 hours ahead of the East Coast. I have a couple of meetings I’ll have to do on no sleep whatsoever because I couldn’t turn off the TV nor go offline (thank G-d for BBC World News) but it’s definitely worth it. Happiest November since 1996, as far as I’m concerned.

Can’t wait to be done with work this afternoon/evening to talk to South Africans and see how they react to the news. Even though I’m traveling alone on this trip, I hope I won’t have to celebrate by myself tonight.

Nice work. Obama’s speech reminded me of The Prayers of the faithful, with the ‘Yes we can’ thing replacing Lord hear us. It’s cool that the audience caught on so quick, doing it even before he started that section of the speech.

The simple fact that democrats control all levels of government mean he has the opportunity to be the one of the best presidents.
