I have this big presentation I am supposed to do on thursday, on which a job may ride. and I am sitting here unable to do a damn things towards it because of all this election excitement. too much! just tell me who wins already!
i can’t comment on the liveblog, i’ve posted a bunch and none have gone through.
I couldn’t comment either. :-( I know we have a firewall here at work, so I wonder if that’s the reason.
I’m stuck at work for another 2 hours so no drinking for me yet. At home we have a chilled bottle of champagne if things go well and a couple bottles of rum if they don’t. Either way, I’m working with a hangover tomorrow.
my only theory on why i can’t comment is that i have comcast internet, so perhaps i’ve used up my allocated share of bandwidth this month.
i don’t drink, but i may have to take a xanax, as i’m a gigantic ball of nerves.
i wonder if the reason pat buchanan isn’t on msnbc tonight is they feared he may keel over with a heart attack on air.
eh, Pat Buchanan always looks like he’s going to keel over. Has for years.
Do you have to give us moderator approval or something to be able to comment in the liveblog? Because i’d like to play too, if there’s room.
i had one comment go through after i emailed jesse, but nothing since then. i think this election may break the series of tubes
Fucking Kentucky.
I’m trying to convince my son it’s not over just b/c the score is 8 to 3.
We’re not doing the Grant park thing b/c there’s no way he could stand for 5 hours or more waiting for B. Hussein to show up.
I also only managed to get one comment through. The rest have died in the ether.
I’m boggled. Indiana too close to call. never thought I’d see that in my life.
Dole’s up over Hagan. It’s early though, right?
We’re set up for full-on unmoderated comments. It’s a CoverItLive issue - I’ll e-mail them.
And they’ve called the Indiana gov race for Mitch “The Sell-Off” Daniels.
Indiana, kiss everything that makes your state work goodbye.
oh come now damian, you kno indiana will still have auto parts stores and liquor stores, same as it ever was
It’s probably a glitch, but right now the Yahoo! livemap is showing Obama ahead in both Carolinas, not just North Carolina.
It won’t last, but it was pretty cool to see.
SC for McCain.
Just spent the last 5 minutes explaining time zones and poll closing times to my son. Showing him 538’s projections and how nothing unexpected has happened yet.
It calmed me down, too.
538 wasnt enough to calm me, had to pop half a xanax, still bouncing in my chair
Obama has 54% of the vote in Florida with 9% reporting.
That just drives me nuts. What 9%? Does that number mean anything? Why is my neck so tight?
I need alcohol, but the kids aren’t asleep yet.
what about wine? isn’t it acceptable to drink wine while the children are awake?
That’s like, child #3’s whole lifetime.
i don’t have kids, but my dog has been obsessed with trying to kill his “george the lame duck” toy for the past week or so.
jAAAAA polls closing
PA for Obama. He just won this puppy.
i don’t have kids, but my dog has been obsessed with trying to kill his “george the lame duck” toy for the past week or so.
Ooh, that reminds me, we still have a “Battling Bush” blow-up doll from 2004. The cats we had at the time were too elderly to be interested, but I think we can get our big ol’ Maine Coon mix to beat it up a little.
Or should we save that pleasure for Inauguration Day?
no way, bust it out tonight in celebration, let the cat shred him
What, what Pennsylvania? Why are none of the websites showing this? Where? Why didn’t I just cave and get cable for the election?
Internet, cable it’s all the same INTPagan. We’ll keep you updated.
I’m so excited.
INTPagan, my coworker got CNN streaming live on her desktop, but we have pretty fast internet here in the office. Sometimes working for evil multinational corporations pays off.
I’m waiting for Obama to win a Bush state.
I want Indiana, damn it!
So apparently those bitter, religious, gun carrying folk are voting Blackazoid.
Yeah, but I can’t play the streams because my daughter is watching a They Might Be Giants DVD so that I can do this and drink in peace. I have to wait a half an hour or so until bedtime. Damn.
I mean, I love my daughter, and all of this is for both of my kids (and everyone else’s), but if there was one night I wish I had a sitter so that I could get trashed and worry, this is it. It doesn’t help that my boyfriend has to work. Lame.
Oh, I’m never moving back there, but if Indiana could come to its senses for one night…
yeah, tonight would be a nice night to not be on meds i cant drink on and have my fiance not be in addiction recovery. as it is, i want cake.
I shoulda made cake.
David Gregory just said that white college educated people have never gone Democratic before.
Who knew educated white folk were so stupid? Or maybe it was just selfishness.
i might have to run out to get junk food if this runs long tonight. something greasy and fried would hit the spot too.
So apparently those bitter, religious, gun carrying folk are voting Blackazoid.
Damn straight we are!! *So glad her state decided to be sane.*
We need eggs. I’ve always got a stockpile of cake mix in the house. Buy it in bulk when it’s on sale for 99 cents. (big family + inlaws in town—it’s always someone’s birthday)
google vegan egg substitutes, you can usually use yogurt or applesauce
I shoulda made cake.
What you really shoulda made was a nice Schadenfreude Pie.
If I’m feeling ambitious enough once I get off work, I may try one myself.
Key Lime yogurt probably won’t cut it.
What is with David Gregory’s pinstripes? Is it some strange homage to Chicago?
Actually, if you have white cake mix, Key Lime yogurt would make a tasty margarita cake (or cupcakes). If you have mint extract, you could call it mojito cake.
I do have bananas, but we’re in desperate need of a grocery run.
Palm Beach fucked up the voting ballots again. People didn’t understand how to connect the boxes and checked them or circled them.
Assholes.
Bananas
How to use it:
1/2 banana blended until smooth or mashed well= 1 egg.
Bananas work wonders as an egg replacer in baking, which is the reason many banana bread recipes don’t require eggs. They hold the air bubbles well, make things nice and moist, and impart a nice flavor. However, you don’t want everything tasting like banana, so use in things where the taste won’t be intrusive. I’ve also noticed that baked goods using banana brown very nicely.
When it works best:
Quick breads, muffins, cakes, pancakes
Tip: Make sure bananas are nice and ripe and have started to brown.
To clarify—the people making the ballots are the assholes. The people trying to vote are just trying to exercise their rights.
i’ve used non-browned bananas fine before. chocolate cake with banana is fantastic
Oooh. According to Ann Curry, of the 25% of NC white voters who said race was a factor, 30% of them STILL voted for Obama.
B/c Crazy Grampa is just that bad.
According to Yahoo! Political Dashboard, Obama is kicking ass in Ohio, 320K to 162K. Behind in Indiana, though, by almost 60K.
i want my house race numbers! illinois closed half an hour ago but no will county numbers are in
Indiana still hasn’t been called. I don’t remember a time that Indiana wasn’t an early blob of red surrounded by the white of uncalled states.
This sounds fucked up, but you can substitute a dollop of mayonnaise for each egg. Seriously. I do it all the time.
Liddy Dole goes down in flames!
Alabama goes to McCain.
Jesusland can feel free to secede at any time.
Not looking good in Indiana. This may be a nail-biter after all.
I need to stop looking at Yahoo! It’s starting to hurt me.
Dude on MSNBC saying the GOP is out of sync with the suburban Philadelphians.
Time to move left, you assholes. There isn’t much further right to go.
Pregnant here. We have Oreos and potato chips for the wait, then sparkling grape juice and cheesecake for the celebration/drowning-sorrows-in-sugar.
One of the major House races here already went for the Dem challenger. Now we’re just waiting on my damned district. Go Grayson!
i think i have to go get a large amount of french fries, i shall return.
Mnemo, Yahoo is evil. They are using AP as their ultimate source. And they just went down on my laptop and won’t come back.
Grrrr. I can has more bad poll results?
Report from MSNBC; Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann are now jerking each other off….
i think i have to go get a large amount of french fries, i shall return.
Oooohhhh….a big truckload of garlic fries sounds realllll good right now….
I’m going to sneak out of work early to buy pizza and cake. I don’t think I’m the only one, because it’s awfully quiet right now.
Olberman has some crazy number saying people who voted republican for Indiana governor still voted for Obama.
Ugh. Can’t take it. Watching BBC. Perhaps soothing Brit accents will help.
I have been stress eating all day. 2 packs of whoppers, a milky way, Chinese food, god help me. Now I’m stress drinking so maybe the cravings will subside.
Wow. The brits have Tom Cruise’s virtual computer from “Minority Report”
They think “Florida is always always interesting.” Showing FL at 51% Obama
They are boggled that 5000 lawyers are going to FL to make sure the vote is fairly counted.
Are they unaware of how Bush got in in the firs tplace?
Ah…lovely blue Great Lake states
I liked how Tom Delay was superdepressed about the minimum wage going up. He acted like they were suggesting smothering all cute kittens or something.
I love it when Rachel Maddow calls the spin of complete wankers like Delay ‘pure nonsense’
Jenny, you know that paying poor people enough to get by is bad for business!
Besides, you act like Delay would care about kittens.
Oh my head.
Chuck on MSNBC just said “Arkansas was a state Clinton carried twice.”
Um…asshole…Clinton was Governor of Arkansas. Think that might have had something to do with it?
Oh shit, they just said ARIZONA is too close to call! That alone has made my night. Go Arizona, light red check, deep blue here we come!!
Why is MSNBC hiding Rachel Maddow? Why doens’t she show up on the camera? Only the boys allowed to comment.
Smack em around Rachel.
Rachel was so far off camera her voice was echoing. They turned her mike off!
they dont seem to want to let eugene robinson talk either, and i like him, hes charming and smiles alot
I’m pregnant too, and too lazy to buy sparkling cider or something. 2-yr-old son and I are bingeing on Halloween candy while husband works night shift at the hospital.
I did my part to turn AZ blue. Well, I voted. So I could have done more, but I’m not going to feel bad about it. (Take that, Prop 102!!!)
Oh shit, Ohio went Obama? Please, please let the Florida results come in soon. In other news, I may need to make a beer run.
pssh, beer run. i may need to re-learn how to do cartwheels
Numeric projection people-
Doesn’t the fact that Obama has takeken the battlegrounds of Pennsylvania and Ohio have huge significance?
Yes, Beast, lots of significance.
BetsyTX on 11/04 at 09:27 PM

Thank you. I knew that if he took any two of the seven “toss-ups” it might be a done deal.
Alright, New Mexico for Obama now. I made calls into New Mexico last week, for the first time ever, for Obama.
so this is what “hope” feels like? i like it! more please.
55 in California and I can tell ‘ya where they’re going.
Now if I could get more info on the Senate countdown and California props 8, 4, and 2, I’d be a happy girl.
I need to go lurk on Free Republic. The reactions there are providing me with my own private schadenfreude festival. (I’m shallow and petty..)
“David Gregory just said that white college educated people have never gone Democratic before. “
WTF?? What kinda bullshit is that?
Oh man, the footage from Grant Park is making me teary eyed.
i kno, im only an hour drive away and i wish i were there.
Oh, and Peppppppeerrrrrrr, SUCK ON TONIGHT, ASSHOLE.
Beer run accomplished. Man, I can’t wait for more results from swing states to come in. In the meantime, I’m munching in Swedish Fish and washing it down with Modelo.
Alabama goes to McCain.
Jesusland can feel free to secede at any time.
Sincerely, I feel you - I live in TX, grew up here, and am sick of the South - but, at the same time, there are people there who voted for Obama, and there are people there who voted the way that they do because they are uneducated. Let’s give them hope instead.
Although I am truly enjoying seeing this happen. I’m starting to really hope, and it’s amazing.
omgomgomgomgomg
im too excited to use proper syntax…or grammar
ok, so im getting sentimental, and i wish we were all in the same room so we could celebrate together!
Home from the bar, slightly buzzed and OMG OHIO?!
(If 207 is really the total now, he needs California, Washington, and Oregon and he’s got it. And c’mon. COME ON. We all know what that means.
I’m afraid to celebrate until the Teevee calls it.
The Colorado personhood thing failed as well, according to Maddow….
Yes, I am too hyped up to close my parenthesis. Call me e.e. cummings.
Just ran over to Malkin’s comments, Cat Ion. Total and complete meltdown.
I am SO FUCKING DELIRIOUSLY HAPPY that Ohio was the first Bush state to flip! We erase the shame of 2004! YESSSS!!
Ugh. It’s my witching hour (yes, I am an old lady, thanks for asking) - I need more states called! Or at least news on interesting senate races and the like! I’m running out of juice! I never even got to drink coffee this morning because I was waiting in line to vote. Boo.
Hm, if I were Peggy Noonan, I could win a Pulitzer for the above paragraph.
OK, I sullied my modem to enjoy the schadenfreude at MM,.....AND IT WAS SWEET GOODNESS INCARNATE.
Did he win Colorado TO?
I swear he will win VA. All the blue areas are dumping their votes now.
Fuck yeah!
opoponax, check fivethirtyeight.com. they have happy senate news.
Per Jesse’s link above. Not sure how reliable it is. But I really, really want it to be!
I’m watching ABC, and they have not called CO yet.
AZ is going against gay marriage, Boo-urns on that. But I’m too excited about Obama’s lead that I just feel hopeful that we’ll be able to mobilize the left leaning voters soon enough and overturn it.
I’m off to check out Malkin’s comments right now.
Ha, ha. Someone at Malkin’s place just said
<blockquote> I feel sick at my stomach. </blockquote
MSNBC basically said that the only way for McCain to win at this point would be to…*drumroll*...win California.
It’s over, folks. They know it. We know it. They’re just not sayin it.
Oh, and it is so so sweet to see Lizardbreath Dole going down over her dastardly ad.
oh so hungry….but can’t pull myself away from the computer and tv. guh.
My friends, our long national nightmare is sort of, kind of, almost over.
Florida’s Amendment 2 shows hope of passing. :( UGH! Our own governor voted for it.
But it looks like Obama’s gonna win here!
We did it! I’m an ex-pat, but this makes me want to jump on the next flight home! WE FUCKING DID IT!
I’ve cried genuine tears of joy twice: my wedding day and just now.
The nice guy actually finished first.
OMG you guys, we are SO happy for you (and the world). I’m in New Zealand and our little group is whooping it up with you all. I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS.
mccain called him to concede. its really real. my heart might jump out of my chest with joy!
The neighborhood is going crazy around me—I can actually hear the cheers from all directions. Made sure to add my WOO! out the living room window, of course. I mean, how could I pass that up?
OK, so if this is the race riot all the freepers were predicting, what side am I supposed to be on, again?
i wish i didnt live in rural red illinois, i want to celebrate with a community!
jesse jackson is crying like a baby on msnbc, this is the greatest day i think ive ever lived
Even Fox News just called it for Obama.
aaaaaannnnndddd…. McCain is conceding.
Neighbors on all sides are STILL cheering, and now we’ve added horns honking to the mix.
This is better than New Years. It’s, like, New America.
God, I am so happy, and numb at the same time. I don’t think it’s really going to sink in until tomorrow morning.
Cry your little eyes out, Sarah Palin.
In the bar earlier we decided that she should get her own show on Fox News, and that we’d all secretly watch it as a guilty pleasure.
$5 this is Sean Hannity tomorrow:
“Naw naw naw. Not God Bless America, GOD DAMN AMERICA, ITS IN THE BAH BUL!”
This makes me happy too.
Congrats to the president-elect Barack Hussein Obama!
Yes on Prop 8 is up 55 to 45 with 6% of the precincts reporting.
Prop 4 is even with… 8% of the precincts reporting.
Buh Whuh?
God damn it! I was so sure Prop 8 wouldn’t pass. I refuse to be proved wrong. No, no, no, no, no, no, NO!
99% of the precincts in CA are conservative and have between 0 and 4 people in them. Wait until a few more are in.
Chill, keshmeshi. This?
Yes on Prop 8 is up 55 to 45 with 6% of the precincts reporting.
Prop 4 is even with… 8% of the precincts reporting.
Buh Whuh?
Means nothing. Virginia was a McCain landslide when that few precincts had reported in.
January 20, 2009 can’t arrive soon enough!!!
President-Elect Barack *Hussein—*LOVE IT motherfuckers!—Obama!!! FauxNews, Darth Rove, Sarah-Serena Joy-Palin, and Joe the Wingnut-Attention-Whore can eat me out raw. You hear that world?!..fifty-plus million Yanks weren’t stupid this time! Say it loud, I’m half-Black like my president-elect and proud! (really, I’m half-Black)
Last I checked the map, San Francisco and the rest of the Bay Area hadn’t reported in, so there’s still hope for 8.
At least I hope there is.
Pseudo-Adrienne, my sister’s boyfriend (also half black) had the same reaction. And my kids, who are 6 and 3 and half not white, will now be able to grow up believing that they can be anything, including president if that’s what they want, too. I’m just so happy.
I’m fully white and yeah, the MSM had a really low opinion of us that was proved wrong tonight.
See this?
http://www.boxturtlebulletin.com/2008/11/04/5844
See those numbers beside 54% and 46%? They add up to less than 2 million.
Along with everything else, that has GOT to be the first time a president-elect has mentioned gay Americans in an acceptance speech.
@ks…thanks!
Along with everything else, that has GOT to be the first time a president-elect has mentioned gay Americans in an acceptance speech.
It’s a new day and a new era. Fuck Reagan, Dubya, Cheney, the chickenshit-hawks, the fundagelicals, racists, xenophobes, misogynists, homophobes, classists, ableists, the Serena Joys, and the wingnut-politicians and pundits. High-five…
Stupid trivial thought;
How much do you wanna bet that Bristol Palin ditches that cretin she was supposed to marry? That political shotgun is no longer trained on those two children, and they can get on with their lives. (Maybe one of them will finish High School!)
How much do you wanna bet that Bristol Palin ditches that cretin she was supposed to marry?
Nope. Mommy Sarah still thinks she can - hell, she probably thinks she will - be the Republican nominee in 2012. So let the shotgun weddings begin!
Ladies and gentlemen, the next President of the United States, Barack Obama!
I cheered, I shouted, I danced on the street.
Damn that speech made even this anarchist cry. I hope I live 106 years old to see that kind of change too.
Question 1 seems to have failed in Connecticut. Somebody care. ![]()
<The Opoponax
In the bar earlier we decided that she should get her own show on Fox News, and that we’d all secretly watch it as a guilty pleasure.>
Okay, you were either sitting at the table next to me when you said that, or more than one Brooklynite made that comment in a bar tonight. A very weird coincidence.
God, I’ve already taken off work tomorrow.
I’m soooo gonna be listening to right wing talk radio and hear them cry.
Fox News pundits not only looks like someone died, but that the corpse is rotting in the studio.
Sasha and Malia are going to get a puppy! Awwww. They will be the cutest first family ever.
Anyone else struck by how the crowd in Grant Park cheered when Obama talked about McCain’s phonecall, and McCain’s people booed whenever he talked about Democrats?
It’s a pity that Steve Gilliard couldn’t have lived to see this. It was in large part his rabble-rousing that kept me going in those early Bush years. I think even a big, stoic guy like him would have been overcome tonight.
I cheered, I grinned, I slugged back half a Guiness and cried like a frikkin’ baby.
+++
(And Rebecca: so we outclassed the Republican crowd—that was not a high bar. McCain showed much more class than the crowd, hopefully he’ll shake them off his shoes forthwith.)
that has GOT to be the first time a president-elect has mentioned gay Americans in an acceptance speech.
Bill Clinton definitely used the phrase “straight or gay” in a high-profile official-like speech. But it never gets old!
Just got home from Drinking Liberally. The Dog & Duck was packet to the rafters, and everyone went fucking nuts when CNN announced for Obama. It was beautiful.
I managed to hold it in until they cut to Jesse Jackson with tears streaming down his face. Then I lost it.
This is even sweeter than I thought it would be.
And now, for the first time in their young lives, little kids from every part of American society will look up in awe and say, “Maybe one day, I too can be president.”
For the first time in nearly eight years, I can look South and say, “Hallelujah! We’re blessed to be your neighbor, America. You taught us about freedom, and then you showed us how to defend it at the polls.”
Oh, my God. :D :D :D
I did not expect to cry. Or for McCain to be so gracious.
MAI PRESIDENT: LET ME SHOW U HIM!!!
FiveThirtyEight.com just called Indiana for Obama. That makes 349 EV, just over what they predicted. (And if you look at their final predictions and the actual map, you will never doubt a word they say henceforth. XD)
“And now, for the first time in their young lives, little kids from every part of American society will look up in awe and say, “Maybe one day, I too can be president.” “
Unless if you’re an unborn child. In that case, you might shudder at the thought of Obama being President. You may risk having your brains sucked out in a partial birth abortion (which Obama supports).
In that case, you might shudder at the thought of Obama being President.
You might, if you were capable of thought. Or shuddering.
There is great relief at the result here in Europe. Congratulations to you all.
Auguste,
You’re right, unborn chidren are not alive until they leave the mothers womb. Dummy me and that stupid medical science that says life begins at conception and it’s heart starts beating at 5 weeks.
By the way, Pepperpants, which sounds worse: a dilationa nd extraction (the actual name of what you’re talking about, not the scare-term you anti-choicers use), or living life without your legs because you get them blown off in a meaningless war?
Unlife being unlife, or life becoming unlife? Which is worse, troll?
I did not expect to cry. Or for McCain to be so gracious.

AMEN.
I just wanted to spirit McCain away from that gawd-awful Republican crowd and that gawd-awful Palin woman and set him up with a beer, a sandwich, and a nap.
There’s a reason the Republican Party doesn’t like him. He isn’t douchy enough. Remember when they Boo’ed him after he defended Obama from the crazy “He’s an Arab” lady?
Now somebody go find that Nov. 5th .gif that was here a couple weeks ago featuring Barack, Michelle, Biden, and Hillary in that Zoolander jeep clip.
Pepperpants, I know you’re stupid and a liar, but try to make your lies convincing. Medical science says nothing about “life beginning at conception”. Only religions and liars say that.
So why don’t you find that bag of penii I’ve been talking about?
I missed:
Emma Goldman
Bill Heywood
The struggle for free speech (look into union organizing at the turn of the century)
Fredrick Douglass (who ran for president with a female(who couldn’t vote) vice president)).
FDR (Love or hate him, he kept the Bolsheviks from getting a foothold, and provided jobs to American citizens)
JFK
RFK (I wish I could have seen the results of your convictions)
And was barely aware for Carter.
I feel proud today to experience seeing the first brown man be elected into High office in the USA. I was able to be part of history today, and I have never been more proud to be a citizen of the United States, than I have today. Today, we saw past the dog and pony show, and voted for our collective best interest, we supported the person who we felt was best qualified, and that’s how it should be.
To everyone who participated today I thank you, across party lines, I thank you for participating in the democracy we desire to be a model of for the rest of the world.
Oh, BTW….... Can we please work together for our collective self interest? PLEASE?!?!?!?!?!
In the forward-looking spirit of bipartisanship and open communication, I’ve banned Pepper for being fucking annoying.
Just walked back from the Grant Park Rally and what can I say?
I’m absolutely speechless at the beauty of it all.
What a night. I’ll remember it for the rest of my life, and I’ll always know that I stood not 100 yards away from the first African-American President-Elect of the United States as he humbly accepted his victory before a crowd of ecstatic supporters with that magnifecent Chicago skyline in the background.
I. WAS. THERE.
And should I ever have grandkids, damn right I’ll tell them proudly.
Euphoria. That’s the only feeling I know right now.
I’m in Johannesburg on business, hence 7 hours ahead of the East Coast. I have a couple of meetings I’ll have to do on no sleep whatsoever because I couldn’t turn off the TV nor go offline (thank G-d for BBC World News) but it’s definitely worth it. Happiest November since 1996, as far as I’m concerned.
Can’t wait to be done with work this afternoon/evening to talk to South Africans and see how they react to the news. Even though I’m traveling alone on this trip, I hope I won’t have to celebrate by myself tonight.
Now somebody go find that Nov. 5th .gif that was here a couple weeks ago featuring Barack, Michelle, Biden, and Hillary in that Zoolander jeep clip.
Here you go:

Nice work. Obama’s speech reminded me of The Prayers of the faithful, with the ‘Yes we can’ thing replacing Lord hear us. It’s cool that the audience caught on so quick, doing it even before he started that section of the speech.
The simple fact that democrats control all levels of government mean he has the opportunity to be the one of the best presidents.
Here you go:

Been there. Argued this. Bought the t-shirt.
You lose. You fail at life. Go suck an egg - preferably fertilized.

Bye bye Caribou Barbie!
It’s “wahh, wahh, wahh” all the way back to “Wah-silla” for you!
And take your “First Dude” with you !
I dug my American flag out of teh attic for the first time in 8 years. I can now be proud of what it stands for again.
“I just wanted to spirit McCain away from that gawd-awful Republican crowd and that gawd-awful Palin woman and set him up with a beer, a sandwich, and a nap. “
Amen. I don’t think he is a bad guy. He just is surrounded by downright toxic people. I feel sorry for him this morning.
