Next entry: I Has Tough Questions Too! Previous entry: The recriminations phase begins

Awesome Obama commercial

The “wassup” ads got on my last nerve, mostly because they were overplayed.  They have made it up to me 100 times over with this video.

This is awesome.  If you liked them, you can sympathize.  If you didn’t like them, they still make you laugh and think.

*whoosh* my spouse is saying, between laughs.

for extra irony, they were originally working for anheuser-busch….

I loved it and had to post it on my blog yesterday depite my desparate attempts to minimize politics there (hard to do during the last couple of months).

The Katrina-like hurricane spot in the ad was a particularly nice touch.

Comment #4: Bulworth  on  10/25  at  08:45 PM

Brilliant. Simply, absolutely brilliant.

I plan on using this in my first year comp class now—my students just read a piece by Leslie Savan that mentions this series of ads, and now we’re reading a chapter from Chris Hedges’ War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning. Who knew that they would dovetail so nicely?

Comment #6: Incertus, Nacho Daddy  on  10/25  at  09:27 PM

Very nicely done.

Comment #7: Eric, Rejector of Memez  on  10/25  at  09:52 PM

That sums up the last eight years rather nicely.

I was really, really not expecting to like that as much as I did. (Or at all.)

Anybody else see this leaked 527 spot?

Damn, that was priceless.  Anyone know who made this spot?  I’d didn’t see any attribution on it (other than the funny disclamer at the end).

It’s directed by Charles Stone III, creator of the original Whassup? ads. He’s the first guy you see on screen.

Comment #12: DJA  on  10/26  at  12:52 AM

Exredstater - I refuse to believe that that is a real ad.

Comment #13: Rebecca  on  10/26  at  01:28 AM

LOL. that “mccain” ad was funded by “Moose Hunters For Truth.” Pretty sure that’s a joke.

Comment #14: Well, what?  on  10/26  at  03:15 AM

Exredstater - I refuse to believe that that is a real ad.

If by “real” you mean officially created, sanctioned or approved of by Obama for America, no, it isn’t.  But will.i.am’s extremely viral “Yes We Can” video early this year wasn’t created or officially approved by the campaign either.

This ad might not be “real”, in the traditional sense… but it is EXTREMELY popular - 2 million hits in 24 hours, according to the LA Times…

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/10/living-room-can.html

And it’s real in the sense that all of the actors in it are the exact same actors from the original Budweiser Whassup? ad that aired back in 1999…

It’s pretty funny.  I hope it doesn’t come down, but I have to wonder if that (recently) Belgian beer company Anheuser-Busch InBev is going to raise a legal stink over it.

Ooops… just saw that you were referring to the bogus McCain ad, not the video in the post.  Nevermind.

Comment #16: DTG in STL  on  10/26  at  04:54 AM

Still, DTG, thank you for the clarification, I was wondering about the information myself

Comment #17: Urs  on  10/26  at  11:58 AM

That was unexpectedly funny.

Change.

True.

The small town ad was kind of hilarious, obama = pro-not-killing-illegal-immigrants-on-sight = pro-zombie. Plus such bad acting and poor make-up.

I loved the Wassup one, though, that was just superb.

Comment #19: Tenya  on  10/26  at  03:46 PM

Very well done. Funny.

Comment #20: CHV  on  10/26  at  06:49 PM

That ad reminded me of grad school. It was the laptop on the cardboard box in the mostly empty not so great apartment. And I recognized the desk lamp from Target.

Oh yeah, as an ad and a commentary on the last 8 years: Beautiful.

Comment #21: wapsie  on  10/26  at  09:42 PM

Am I the only one who actually found the end moving?  I don’t know what it is, but something about the way all that tragic hilarity stopped suddenly as Obama came on the screen, and then he quietly said, “Change,” like a prayer - one we’re all saying.
