Black bear cub shot, covered by Obama sign and left on Western Carolina University campus

The sickness continues...this is the Right’s idea of a “political statement”—shooting a bear in the head and stapling Obama-Biden signs to it.

“I just can’t believe people would go to such an extent to state their political beliefs,” said WCU Junior, Bethany Rowe “A sick individual who thinks extremely badly about Obama,” said Freshman Daniel Ford.

Political Science professor Chris Cooper agrees with students;
“I think it sends a pretty disturbing message, obviously it sounds like it may have some racial implications and at the very least its somebody sending the wrong message and taking this hot political season the wrong way.”
University police are investigating and are asking for anyone with information to come forward.

A protest against the bear market?

It was preparing to defect to Stephen Colbert.

“We’re here. We’re queer. We don’t want anymore bears!”

Seriously though, this person is clearly not meant for social interaction with other humans. I hope they catch him and punish him to the fullest extent of the law.

Comment #3: Mark  on  10/21  at  02:05 PM

Two quick observations:

1. Bear-killer’s hoped-for reaction from observers: “Hyuck! Somebody killed a bar. We should totally kill that thar black guy!”  Actual reaction from observers: “Jesus, what a freak. Throw the fucker in jail!”  Actual reaction from undecided voters: “Those McCain guys are insane. I’m voting for Obama!”

2. It would be just grand if they decided to try to repeat their success, missed the next bear, and got mauled to death. That would make me laugh with a great deal of jolliness, and I don’t care who finds out.  smile

Comment #4: Scott  on  10/21  at  02:18 PM

This was extra sick because tit was a 75lb bear cub.  Aren’t these supposed to be the ‘sanctity of life’ people and they are shooting baby bears?  I hope the law catches them and prosecutes to the fullest extent.

Comment #5: Amalink  on  10/21  at  02:34 PM

Also—there was a major black bear poaching ring busted in that area a few years back—poached hundreds of bears out of the Smokies and sold the gall bladders to Asia—probably not related, but it is an odd corner of the Appalachians.

Comment #6: Charlotte  on  10/21  at  02:54 PM

Actually, there is no proof the shooter is the same as the sign placer.  Maybe somebody fired a gun by accident, it hit a bear on campus, and the wind blew a sign down?  Oh, the staples.  Still, could be 2 different people.  Maybe.

Obama supporters also do bad things.  Does that make anybody feel better?

Comment #7: Fred  on  10/21  at  02:54 PM

fred: no. unless you show us an obama supporter that KILLED something, stfu.

fucking sociopath, that’s all i gotta say.

Comment #8: chibi  on  10/21  at  03:10 PM

<snark> So you mean that line about being bitter and clinging to guns was right after all?</snark>

The Secret Service is going to have one eff of a lot of work to do in the next four years.

Comment #9: paul  on  10/21  at  03:13 PM

This doesn’t even make *sense* as a political statement. Is there some obscure connection between bears and…er, anything in the current campaigns, or in election campaigns in general, that I’m missing? Because this just seems RANDOM.

Poor baby bear. :(

Comment #10: Nenya  on  10/21  at  03:13 PM

I think that Fred was being sarcastic.

As for the connection to Obama, isn’t it obvious?  He Be Ayers.

Comment #11: seeker6079  on  10/21  at  03:25 PM

Wow seeker. I am impressed. Honestly.

Comment #12: Daisy  on  10/21  at  03:58 PM

Somewhere, George Allen is smiling beatifically.

And the guy who shot the bear will someday run for senate as a republican, and the other two guys who helped him drag it on campus will look back on it from 30 years, and be like, Uh, No. Not You.

//it is weird how that part of appalachia has a long history of selling weird shit to china. the ‘sangers, for instance. Deeply unwholesome people looking for ginseng to sell to china.

Comment #13: Indy  on  10/21  at  04:03 PM

It’s a black bear. That’s the political point. It’s a black bear, shot in the head and dumped on the “ivory tower” where they “hate America”. That’s the point. It is a burning cross to the president and everyone on that campus.

That is its point.

Comment #14: Cerberus  on  10/21  at  04:10 PM

The woman who played Ann Coulter in W. was severely beaten in her home too. Nobody took credit for that one, so it could be unrelated to the movie.  ...or not. I wouldn’t be surprised.

Comment #15: banisteriopsis  on  10/21  at  04:14 PM

Wow.
Only “republicans” do this?
Why not a libertarian?
WHY NOT A LIBERALIST?

Not saying it couldn’t be a republican.
But republicans can’t be the only answer for violence.

What happened is sick.

Comment #16: Shane Stanford  on  10/21  at  04:18 PM

I am really sick and tired of this Blackshirt crap.

Comment #17: Richard Goblin  on  10/21  at  04:18 PM

WHY NOT A LIBERALIST?

WTF is a “liberalist”?

We’re assuming it was a Republican because they put Obama signs on it.  You may not have heard, but we have this election thingy going on where it’s getting pretty nasty between the Republicans supporting McCain and the Democrats supporting Obama.

I suppose in theory it could be some kind of frame-up, but that would be pretty fucking sick, too.

Comment #18: Mnemosyne  on  10/21  at  04:39 PM

I didn’t do it

Comment #19: The Liberalist  on  10/21  at  04:44 PM

There are some seriously sick assholes in this world.  This kind of crap makes me despair for all of mankind.  What the hell is wrong with us?

Comment #20: BadKitty  on  10/21  at  04:50 PM

A bear cub?  Someone killed a bear cub as a political statement, wrapped it in Obama signs and placed it on a university campus.  The evil of these people is mind boggling.  Killing anything to make a political point is evil.  And by these people I don’t just mean whoever killed the baby bear, I mean the entire spectrum of racist, sexist, corporate scum that make up the political right in this country.  What they want us to think is “If we’ll do this to an innocent bear cub what will we do to you?”  It’s the same as cross burning and hanging nooses.

Comment #21: G Porgy  on  10/21  at  04:59 PM

Ah.. AWW.. Motherfuckers!  God, these Real Americans are complete fucking psychopaths.  I’m glad to live in Fake America(trends show NM going blue this cycle).  This is disturbing beyond words.  It could only be worse if they did it to a person, but the implication is still CRYSTAL CLEAR.

I am no longer surprised by these people.  Saddened, yes…but no longer surprised.  I’m suffereing from outrage fatigue at this point.

Comment #24: Tim  on  10/21  at  05:16 PM

Like it or not, Troll Shane, Republicans have a long and storied history of violent oppression of the Other.

Comment #25: stogoe  on  10/21  at  05:29 PM

I was being sarcastic.

I looked, I haven’t found where Obama supporters have killed anything.  There was one guy who hit a pro-McCain woman with a stick, made a red mark or two.  That’s a person, not a bear, so person trumps bear, but kill trumps red mark.

Racism, that’s it.  There are black bears, brown bears and polar bears, and they killed a black bear.  Of course, there are no polar bears convenient to the Carolinas.

Hey!  There is no West Carolina!  Oops, the school is in North Carolina.  You can major in Athletic Training and minor in Appalachian Studies.  I looked it up.

They’ve never had so much publicity.  That means the administration did it, right?

Comment #26: Fred  on  10/21  at  05:34 PM

Edward Abbey did a stint at WCU as a visiting author.  And so did Lisa Alther (author of Kinflicks among some other good books).  It’s not a bad little scholl, about 8000 students.  WCU is part of the 16-school university system in NC (which includes, yes, UNC).

My husband is in grad school there.

Comment #27: Ellephont  on  10/21  at  05:59 PM

Obama supporters also do bad things.  Does that make anybody feel better?

Yep.  False equivalencies always make me feel better.  It means the person making the observations is neutral , logical, and completely unbiased.

Comment #28: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  10/21  at  06:30 PM

It’s the same as cross burning and hanging nooses.

It’s terrorism.

Comment #29: annejumps  on  10/21  at  06:32 PM

I’m sorry, but I just couldn’t resist.

Comment #30: seeker6079  on  10/21  at  06:56 PM

Didn’t McCain claim Teddy Roosevelt as one of his heroes during the debates?  And didn’t Teddy Roosevelt famously REFUSE to shoot a bear cub, giving rise to the teddy bear?

how far humanity has fallen.

Comment #31: Rikibeth  on  10/21  at  07:30 PM

Hey, Fred, they need you in the thread above to explain why phoning in death threats to the Ohio Secretary of State’s office is perfectly normal in an election year.

Comment #32: Mnemosyne  on  10/21  at  08:15 PM

Careful not to paint with too broad a brush.  Actaully, that area has a lot of northern translpants - winter in Florida and summer in the mountains in towns like Cashiers and Highlands - heavy on the $$$gated communities.  It’s also within 100 miles of Asheville.  So it’s a very diverse mix.

Tim:

I’m right there with you, unfortunately. The really fucked up thing about it is that this kind of behaviour is starting to seem ordinary and unremarkable to me.
