BREAKING: Daddy D resigns from Focus On the Family board

Fundies

UPDATE: Reaction from Truth Wins Out and GLAAD are below the fold.

The old man who has spent his adult life trying to turn the U.S. into a theocracy is finally throwing in the towel. I guess after blowing the coffers on Prop 8 and having to lay off staff, it’s time to exit. It’s just a part of the “succession plan” they say. (AP):

Dobson notified the board of his decision Wednesday, and the 950 employees of the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based ministry were informed Friday morning at a weekly worship service, said Jim Daly, the group’s president and chief executive officer.

Dobson, 72, will continue to host Focus on the Family’s flagship radio program, write a monthly newsletter and speak out on moral issues, Daly said. Dobson’s resignation as board chairman “lessens his administrative burden” and is the latest step in a succession plan, the group said. Dobson began relinquishing control six years ago by stepping down as president and CEO.

...Dobson has a devoted following. His radio broadcast reaches an estimated 1.5 million U.S. listeners daily. Yet critics say his influence is waning, pointing to evangelicals pushing to broaden the movement’s agenda beyond abortion, gay marriage and other issues Dobson views as most vital.

...That will likely mean not one person behind the microphone but several speaking on their respective areas of expertise, Daly said. The organization, anticipating a post-Dobson era, for several years has tried out different voices on the broadcast and in giving media interviews on hot-button social issues.

At the same time, Focus officials have acknowledged difficulties in raising money from younger families critical to its future. The economy also has hurt. Last fall Focus on the Family eliminated more than 200 staff positions, its largest employee cutbacks ever.

Daly said the group is now “right on track” with a revised annual budget of $138 million.

His wife Shirley is also stepping down from the board.

Truth Wins Out:

“James Dobson’s legacy of lies has caused significant pain for gay and lesbian people and their families,” said Wayne Besen, Executive Director of Truth Wins Out. “We hope his departure will eventually signal a shift in tone and end Focus on the Family’s destructive attacks against gay and lesbian Americans.”

...In Nov. 2008, Truth Wins Out protested Dobson’s selection into the Radio Hall of Fame. In the past two years, TWO has found eight researchers in three countries who say that Dobson has distorted their work. Videos and letters that these scientists sent to Dobson can be viewed at http://www.Respectmyresearch.org.

Dobson’s rhetoric is so divisive that former House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX) said that, “Dobson and his gang of thugs are real nasty bullies.” Focus on the Family co-founder Gil Alexander Moegerle said that, “I believe Dobson-style politics have been inept, simplistic, exclusionary, divisive and alarmingly sectarian…James Dobson’s political style has been one of relentlessly demonizing his adversaries.”

Dobson told The Daily Oklahoman on Oct. 23, 2004 that, “Homosexuals are not monogamous. They want to destroy the institution of marriage. It will destroy marriage. It will destroy the Earth.” Dobson also told the Daily Oklahoman that Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) is “a God’s people hater. I don’t know if he hates God, but he hates God’s people.”

GLAAD:

“For more than 20 years, James Dobson has used his expansive, well-funded media platform to promote defamatory and false information about the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people,” said Neil G. Giuliano, President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). “As Dobson resigns from his role as chairman, it is important to remember his history of false and defamatory claims about our community. GLAAD urges the media to not allow Dobson to turn today’s news into yet another media platform for him to advance his intolerant divisive attacks on gay and lesbian Americans and their families.”

So, in other words, not really resigning. I mean, he’ll still be doing all of the same stuff that annoys the crap out of me.

Having Daddy-Dick Dobson step down from his official position won’t stop Fuck Up the Family from being a bunch of hateful homobigots.  Until they’re run out of the media, either by financial ruin or by peals of laughter at their fruitless flailing, they will continue to hate.

The financial ruin is in progress…it shot its wad on Prop 8. A friend noted via email that according to the last form 990 available via Guidestar, FOtF income was roughly $145 million, with an additional $9.6 million coming into their (c)4. On the other hand, the expenses far exceeded their income…by $2.9 million at the (c)3 and more than $425,000 at the (c)4. So overall, they’re running at more than a $3 million deficit.

Happy Dance!!!

This fills me with such glee. I know they’re still going to be annoying and they’re still going to do a lot of irritating crap, but I think they’re going away. If they can’t raise money from young people, they have no future, especially given the $3 million deficit Pam mentioned.

On a personal note, this is a prime instance of schaudenfreude. I went to a high school in which the popular girls were also the fundies (... I know) and they gave me, and plenty of others, hell from start to finish, all four years. Homobigots and snakes, the lot of them, and now, where do 3/4 of them work? You guessed it. This is what they get for carrying out their plans to destroy innocent peoples’ lives in the name of their imaginary friend.

The power struggle to become the next big fundie leader will be interesting and perhaps a little amusing to watch. I’m fairly certain most of the candidates have at least one skeleton in the, um, closet. (Although I guess whoever is just concealing heterosexual or financial transgressions probably thinks they have an advantage.)

@paul: I remember Dan Savage once suggesting - after the initial Ted Haggard awesomeness - that we start calling everyone who speaks out against gay rights gay (except I think he used a more vulgar word, being Dan Savage, but I can’t remember now), and maybe that would shut them up, because either they’d realize they’d been found out or were too gross to be able to handle being called gay. He might have been on to something.

Comment #7: F. McGee  on  02/28  at  01:42 AM

Ugh… that quite about hating God’s people? wtf, I though Christian theology says we’re all God’s people, Jesus died for everybody, omnipresent/omnibenevolent. How can any one not be God’s people? And by hating on the gays, Dobson hates God’s people, nyagh.

Comment #8: Samantha Vimes  on  02/28  at  02:56 AM

Samantha,

I though Christian theology says we’re all God’s people, Jesus died for everybody, omnipresent/omnibenevolent.

Exactly.  How can you call yourself a Christian and preach hatred?  It contradicts the fundamentals (love your neighbor as yourself) of the religion.  Could also mention a lot of things from the Bible such as “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone”, but these people seem to make exceptions for a lot of these rules….

You have read the Bible, right?  God was something of an asshole: jealous, genocidal, cool with slavery, misogynist, created Hell….

The book has messages of love and vile messages of hate. All Christians make exceptions (after all, Leviticus does say I should be killed for fucking men.)

I recommend “Prop 8: The Musical” to all those who haven’t seen it. It’s a funny comment on how Christians pick and choose what they believe in, even those who think the Bible is literally true, so why not choose the not-hating path?

I don’t think they really believe that persecuting homosexuals is a good idea because the Bible says so. I guess some of them might be sheep-like enough to just go along with whatever their pastor says, but a lot of Pam and Amanda’s previous posts point out that it isn’t about being a good Christian, it’s about controlling the behavior of people around you/wanting to maintain the patriarchy. They just use the Bible as an excuse because they think other people won’t argue with it, or if they do, it’s because they were sent to test them.

When I was a kid, some well-meaning relative got me a subscription to Brio, which is (was?) Focus on the Family’s magazine tailored for pre-teen girls. It really creeped me out, and definitely solidified the atheist leanings I was already having at a pretty young age. I can see why they’re having trouble with the younger set after that “Triumph of the Will”-style propaganda.

Comment #11: F. McGee  on  02/28  at  09:54 AM

Personally, I really think that the vast majority of the actively closed minded understand at a level just below where they allow themselves to think that they’re in a house of cards.  Because they have made as system that is so simplistic (Bible literal, God only loves us), they are very aware that if they let themselves think about it, it’ll crash on them.

The saddest thing is that it isn’t inherent. I know a lot of people here disagree, but it is perfectly possible to be religious and still be okay with science, philosophy, diversity, and doubt. But their leaders have it set up for them that the only two choices are simpleminded religion or godlessness.

I firmly expect that one of the social trends in our lifetime will be the collapse of the fundie empire and the “discovery” of a “new” Christianity that is about tolerance, social responsibility, individual conscience, and all the things it was about before it got hijacked. Which of course, is what has happened over and over again throughout its history. Where’s Francis of Assisi when you need him?

Well, Jesus anticipated this:

“Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

“And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

I have listened to Dobson’s radion show at lest once a week for several years. Dude ismahorly femme. That doesn’t mean he’s gay. But I can’t hear his vive without imagining him 80s coach shorts and a baseball cap.

Doesn’t this kind of thing usually precede an indictment?
