Cabinet position offer for Hillary?

I didn’t watch cable news most of Sunday—has the MSM in the U.S. mentioned this? From the UK Telegraph:

Hillary Clinton will be offered a dignified exit from the presidential race and the prospect of a place in Barack Obama’s cabinet under plans for a “negotiated surrender” of her White House ambitions being drawn up by Senator Obama’s aides.

The former First Lady would get the chance to pilot Mr Obama’s reforms of the American healthcare system if she agrees to clear the path to his nomination as Democratic presidential candidate.

Senior figures in the Obama camp have told Democrat colleagues that the offer to Mrs Clinton of a cabinet post as health secretary or to steer new legislation through the Senate will be a central element of their peace overtures to the New York senator.

...The Obama camp, however, remains nervous about Mrs Clinton’s intentions and ambitions, and is preparing a face-saving package that will allow her to continue to play a role in health care reform, which has been her signature issue for more than a decade. Despite pressure from some Clinton allies, Mr Obama and his advisers do not wish to ask her to be his vice-presidential running mate. “They will talk to her,” one Democrat strategist close to senior figures in the Obama camp told The Sunday Telegraph. “They will give her the respect she deserves. She will get something to do with health care, a cabinet post or the chance to lead the legislation through the Senate.”

Keep her away from VP.

I wonder where the Telegraph got this?  My parents read the FT for their news now, b/c they enjoy reading news that simply won’t get played here.

I say, promise her a position on SCOTUS. I think she could do excellent work there, she would be a good balance to Roberts et al, and it would guarantee a Dem majority for at least a generation. How? The very thought of Justice Hillary Clinton would cause the heads to explode for most of the right wing.

I don’t want her on the SCOTUS. She’s much too corporate. I don’t want her piloting the healthcare reforms, either: look how well she did the first time. And, she’s much too corporate.

I think she would be an excellent Secretary of State.

Having Hillary as Czar of Healthcare would either be a stroke of genius or a sign of madness.  Would supporters of her efforts outnumber the Reichwing political suicide bombers dedicated to her destruction, or vis versa?  Not clear at all…

It doesn’t have to be that specific.  Pretty much any political appointment she might be given would “cause heads to explode” on the right.  When Hillary’s name comes up, rationality in the right wing (what little there is) disappears…

I saw this yesterday and < a href=“http://incertus.blogspot.com/2008/06/i-think-this-would-be-good-idea.html”>think it’s a good idea</a>, assuming the story is accurate. It wasn’t that her overall plan was bad back in 1992—it was that the plan she offered was a step too far for a public that wasn’t quite ready for it. Now her plan isn’t quite as good, but the public is way more ready for it, and the position of the insurance industry isn’t as strong. Plus, it would allow Clinton to put her mark on a lasting legacy and would show Clinton supporters that Obama recognizes and respects her position on a subject where, frankly, she has the superior plan.

Yeah, putting clinton in charge of health care reform won’t cause too much ruckus….

My pick for the Supreme court, though, is still Anita Hill.

Healthcare is her signature item?  She abandoned healthcare as an issue as soon as the insurance companies started financing her Senate ambitions.

At this point Hillary is to Hawkish for secretary of state and too corporate for anything that would give her a chance to give money to insurance companies and doctors. 
I understand why people want Hillary to have a graceful exit, which I doubt she will take anyway, but to give her a position with any real power would be a mistake.  She is not a progressive and would torpedoe any effort to find a solution that did not benefit business.

Giving HRC the Department of HHS would give her a legacy, and that’s something.  I think she can do it, and if that’s enough to get her to step aside gracefully, I’m all for it.  There are plenty of Democrats in New York State who can hold her Senate seat in perpetuity.

Oh, and Anita Hill for SCOTUS?  That’s precious.

I think Hillary on the Supreme Court would be great!  Scalia’s head would explode. Plus she’d have a greater influence on the court than as a junior Senator.

The private insurance industry MUST be excised from the health care system.  Billary would make the purchase of health insurance mandatory, which in turn wouldn’t change a fucking thing, but would ensure the MANDATORY PURCHASE OF PRIVATE INSURANCE.

Her hairbrained scheme to limit the cost to some proportional percentage of income is a total non starter.  What kind of health care could someone earning 30k a year buy for their 10%?  Would they have less health care than someone who pays 10% of their 50k salary?

What MUST happen is a divorce between health insurance and health care.  Insurance is insurance, not care.  Americans don’t need insurance.  They need affordable health care.  Every other civilized nation on planet Earth manages to provide health care for its citizens without fattening the pockets of insurance executives and without subjecting patients to the mercy of low level insurance paper pushers whose job it is to deny your care so they can keep their fat profits.

Fuck that.

Time for a mutual, taxpayer provided fund for healthcare for all Americans who choose to OPT IN.  Those who elect to continue paying the insurance pirates for the cost of their care should be permitted to do so.  But most will opt for the imminently more affordable, and easy to obtain healthcare that can be and is provided by governments all over the world to their citizens.


A reminder:

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

We did not build neighborhoods, townships, villages, cities, states and this nation so everyone could be “on their own”  That is the law of the jungle.  If you want to live by the law of the jungle, go live in the fucking jungle.

Insurance is like the goofiest bet you can make.  You bet something bad will happen to you, and the insurance vendor bets it won’t.  And there’s a very large vigorish due no matter what.  And if the insurance vendor thinks they’ll lose, you’ll get dropped in a heartbeat, unless laws are in place to prevent it.

Insurance works okay to handle car accidents, robberies, fires, etc. 

Healthcare?  Not so much…

Just to chime along…

Healthcare is not a market-driven phenomena.  Shifting more costs to patients simply causes poorer patients to do without until absolutely necessary.

It’s evil.  Healthcare is a right.  It’s General Welfare.  Insurance companies need to be banned.

We have a system where insurers theoretically cover pregnancy and find ways to drop women from their lists when they get pregnant. (And many don’t cover birth control). Admitting you have had any health care needs in the last 10-15 years can get you excluded from eligibility if you aren’t under a group plan.
