College Republicans: Now With Even More Alienation From Their Peers

University of Toledo College Republicans to “reclaim the campus” with Joe the Plumber, because nothing signals a successful ideological coup like the leadership of a former political celebrity.  It explains why Providence, Rhode Island is run by Jessica Cutler’s iron fist, the only interruption in the city’s otherwise peaceful, safe lives being mandatory readings of The Washingtonniene: A Novel every Wednesday at noon.

It’s a small price to pay for stability, my friends.

Good lord, my alma mater hasn’t changed a bit.  The campus Republicans try to “reclaim” campus, and everyone else ignores them.

Drives ‘em up a wall.

When is Joe the Plumber, who’s not even named Joe or a plumber, going to go poof?

Oh, no.  No, No, No.  We are not having him on our team.

You guys are killing me.

I promise, we don’t want him either.  But the…fine…folks at WSPD just gave the know-nothing blowhard his own talk radio show.  It would be almost amusing if it weren’t so baffling and pitiful.

Soooo….

A college uses an anti-intellectual as its avatar?  Get the nets.

Comment #5: Magis  on  08/24  at  09:55 AM

Not the college itself, Magis.  Just the idiot Campus Republicans.

Comment #6: MaggieB  on  08/24  at  09:57 AM

...I know a lot of people that go to UT.

I’ll have to ask them about this when I see them this weekend (though chances are none of them will have even heard anything about it XD).

Comment #7: Ruby  on  08/24  at  10:46 AM

Anti-intellectual college students? Guess they take the AP Suppression of Cognitive Dissonance courses in high school…

Comment #8: Aaron  on  08/24  at  11:59 AM

Remember when guys like Bill Kristol and David Frum used to try touring college campuses?  And remember when college students took up the practice of pieing them?  Ah, good times.

Comment #9: Zifnab  on  08/24  at  12:44 PM

Not the college itself, Magis.  Just the idiot Campus Republicans.

You’re right that was overbroad and unfair.

Sooo….

*rants*

How could ANY person calling themselves a STUDENT of ANYTHING look up to Joe the Plumber as an example of ANYTHING.

There, now I feel better.

Comment #10: Magis  on  08/24  at  01:00 PM

JoeDuhPlumber—because there’s no better mascot for pride in intellectual achievment than an unlicensed tradesmen. Good show, U. Toledo College Republicans.

Wooo! Bring on the 45-year-old, bald, bloated ignoramus!

I’m a total lurker, but I have to comment on this. I earned a masters degree from UT in ‘07 and lived in Toledo for several years. When I was there the CR’s main focus seemed to be getting the school to deny benefits to gay partners of employees. It apparently would have the effect of instantly evaporating all homosexuals, everywhere, for all time. I’ve never seen a group of people more resentful of others pleasure. They carried around the kind of hate that twists inward and makes life miserable. I’m glad to see they’ve left all of that behind and have turned into a comedy troupe by embracing Joe the Plumber.

And just to Reply to Magis, the college logo IS NOT anti-intellectual. UT was a fairly liberal place for being in conservative northwest Ohio. We had liberal speakers, antiwar demonstrations, etc. Sadly for Toledo, dumb is more entertaining that smart, so all people associate with it is Joe.

Interesting…

p8712 @14:

Can I tell you how frustrating that is?  We’ve got a great zoo, a nationally ranked museum, a fun baseball team.  We’re the home of Danny Thomas, Jamie Farr (who really is a nice guy!), GLORIA STEINEM!, jazz great Art Tatum, singer Anita Baker (whose voice makes me melt into my socks), Morrison R. Waite (7th Chief Justice of SCOTUS, thankyewverymuch)...and all people know about us it Joe-The-Fucking-Plumber-Who-Isn’t-A-Plumber-And-Isn’t-Named-Joe-Either.  *grrrrrrrr*

I love my fair city, but some of the denizens of it are right stupid.

Comment #16: MaggieB  on  08/24  at  08:15 PM

Amen MaggieB! You’re not a Toledoan until you’ve had a Jamie Farr sighting.

Oh and don’t forget, 90% of all glass in the country is made there!

Comment #17: p8712  on  08/24  at  09:03 PM

OK, this long-time Pandagon reader had to de-lurk after seeing this.

As an employee at UT, I didn’t even know about this until seeing this post earlier.

As a life-long Toledo resident, I agree that dumb is more entertaining than smart (anyone who knows anything about our current mayor can see why). However, I’m ashamed to say that I’ve yet to see Jamie Farr, except on TV during the golf tournament.

Interesting…

I dunno,  Phoenician,  even denial takes more self-awareness than Not Joe the Not Plumber has ever displayed.  I’m not sure Joe could be gay any more than snails could be considered gay or bi, I mean, sure, there’s some sexually freaky things about snails, but they don’t know that.  If he were caught in a compromising position with another man and his excuse was he didn’t know that was gay, I think I’d accept that.

gracchus @11

You have something against tradesmen. HE IS NOT ONE OF US. We all work very hard at getting and keeping our licenses, most if not all trades in most if not all states require continuing education, and most of us are doing what we love and keep up on topics and technology. I’m an electrician, and with apprenticeship classes, continuing education, licensing classes and tests (several states), and doing things just for grins, I have put in as much time as my 4 yr degree, and I am not unusual. And I have more fun, more responsibility, and make considerably more than some damn BsAd doing TPM reports and happily screwing his coworkers.

You don’t like us? Build your own damn house, stores, road, car.

How are college Republicans going to take back a city-owned, tax-supported school? Shouldn’t they be going to a good, private, conservative school like Hillsdale? No true Republican would go to college on the taxpayer’s dime. Socialized higher education can be ended in our lifetime, if we are only diligent.
