Debbie Schlussel scrapes the bottom of the barrel

Of course, by writing this post, so do I. I promise, I was only looking at the crazy to see what she had to say about the newest revelations about the Binghampton killer. But when I saw the most pathetic attempt at a gotcha this side of “gotcher nose”, I couldn’t resist.

You see, Debbie has caught Barack Hussein Obama accidentally admitting that he’s a Muslim. AGAIN [sic].

So, you have to wonder what exactly did Barack Hussein Obama mean when he said this in Turkey, today, in his butt-kissing Islam speech.

The United States has been enriched by Muslim Americans. Many other Americans have Muslims in their family, or have lived in a Muslim-majority country—I know, because I am one of them.

Yes, but which “one of them”?

Both.

Dumbass.

Obama is an American who has Muslims in his family, and has lived in a Muslim-majority country. I’ll check my sources again, but I’m pretty sure that’s common knowledge. Of course, given that wingnut memories can be measured in mayfly-lives, maybe Debbie thinks that we haven’t heard about it yet, and that our outrage will be such that we’ll rise up and demand a recall election tout de suite.

Of course Schussel probably thinks there is a “one drop” rule for cultural and religious heritage.  Therefore, it doesn’t matter that his mother was white and from a christian family, it only matters that his father was both black and nominally a muslim.

Of course a lot of people had and have the same mental constructions around Judaism.

The anti-Christ can’t hide with crack investigators like this on the case.

He might as well just come clean in the face of such overwhelming evidence.

Sounds like Nemo gots teh Anal Poisoning.

I saw the headlines “Obama says America isn’t at war with Islam” yesterday and was waiting for it to all hit the fan. The response has apparently been very muted so far. That surprises me.

Pleasantly surprised, but still.

I should have never gone to Europe…

Argh!! If only I hadn’t admitted my status as a Sleeper Agent in front of the entire world! If only Debbie Schlussel hadn’t been paying attention that day!

Curses, foiled again.

THank God we caught this one in time.

Comment #7: norbizness  on  04/07  at  11:10 AM

I don’t think we can shut people like her up or anything, but monitoring the spread of hate group-style rhetoric on the right is important, as three lives have been lost already.

I’d like to stay stuff like this just shows the conservative movement is in its final throes, but that’s what Cheney kept saying about Iraq.

On the other hand, the fact that the right wing press is obsessed with conspiracy theories really drives a wedge between them and both the electorate and the conservative politicians.  They’re becoming irrelevant - only Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin will even listen to this garbage, while the rest of Steele’s party just keeps talking about spending and tax cuts.  And the electorate loves Obama and wants the GOP to work with him.

As much as they hated McCain for being a moderate, they came around this time.  If some middle-of-the-road, hack Republican gets nominated in 2012 and ignores all their issues, will they jump ship with the Consititution Party?

Comment #11: Billingham  on  04/07  at  11:42 AM

Of course a lot of people had and have the same mental constructions around Judaism.

Islamophobia is the new anti-semitism. Muslims are well on their way to being racialized by the right, which is just….dumb.

Comment #12: Ben D.  on  04/07  at  11:43 AM

Dear Ms. Schlussel,

While your ancestors (and mine too) were being killed by the spiritual ancestors of your Christian-right friends, the Jews of the Muslim world were generally (albeit with many exceptions) doing reasonably well living in Dhimmitude.

Just think about it ...

Remember Ms. Schlussel, that before the Crusaders left to do battle with the Infidel in the Holy Land, they went around and killed every “Infidel at Home” they could find.  If I were you, Ms. Schussel, I’d choose my political allies a bit more carefully—history has shown what eliminationist wingnuts fighting Muslims in the Near East really think about us Jews.

Comment #13: DAS  on  04/07  at  11:46 AM

It’s great that she says it in such a way that she can claim she didn’t actually accuse Obama of being a muslim — but the dog whistle was loud enough for The Base to understand her meaning.

It’s similar to the way “Big Dick” Cheney never actually said Saddam blew up the WTC himself, but it was always strongly implied he was responsible.

Look, wingnut media.  Either have the balls to stand up and say out loud and with no weasel words that you think Obama is not an American and is a Secret Mooslim Infiltrator and is The Antichrist, or shut the fuck up.

If you think he’s a covert force for evil, present your evidence and let the world judge.  If you have no evidence, then you are functioning at the same level as people who think Elvis Presley is still alive, we never went to the moon, and we are visited by space aliens every day.  And people should know that you’re full of shit, or a psycho, or both…

Ah, Debbie Schlussel.  My permanent nominee for Worst Person in the World.

Comment #15: Mnemosyne  on  04/07  at  11:53 AM

With these people there is no bottom, not of the barrel, not of the cesspit.  They have shovels.

Comment #16: Magis  on  04/07  at  11:55 AM

I’d really, really, really like to see someone - a news anchor, whatever - respond to these…individuals with one question:

“What if he actually is Muslim?  So what?”

Ah, but I forget, of course, that the Evil Godless Commie has been supplemented with the Evil Heathen Terrorist Muslim in their pantheon of People Who Want To Destroy Our Way Of Life.  This, of course, produces the double-think contraction that Obama is a Socialist Commie Terrorist Muslim.

Comment #17: tannenburg  on  04/07  at  12:18 PM

Yes, but which “one of them”?

One might think that “a University of Michigan graduate [who] holds both Law and MBA degrees from the University of Wisconsin” and a columnist for major newspapers would be able to parse a basic English sentence, for example:

“Many other Americans…” [that would be the subject of the sentence, Debs] “... I am one of them.” [“them” referring to the subject]

And so, once again, we’re left to ponder the eternal question about right-wing pundits: drooling idiot or cynical liar? Which one of “them” are you, Debbie?

Comment #18: Gracchus.  on  04/07  at  12:49 PM

“What if he actually is Muslim?  So what?”

That’s basically what Colin Powell said.

Comment #19: Ben D.  on  04/07  at  12:50 PM

“And so, once again, we’re left to ponder the eternal question about right-wing pundits: drooling idiot or cynical liar? Which one of “them” are you, Debbie?”

As with most of them, it’s certainly both/and — obviously…

Comment #20: MikeEss  on  04/07  at  01:09 PM

Is this the same Debbie Schussel who responded to the shootings at the immigrant center in Binghamton, N.Y., with horror—-because some of the victims may have been taking citizenship classes even though their English was less than perfect?

Comment #21: Bitter Scribe  on  04/07  at  01:10 PM

Anyone who got to page 4 in “The Audacity of Hope” would know the answer to that one.

Comment #22: Emily  on  04/07  at  01:11 PM

As with most of them, it’s certainly both/and — obviously…

Of course, but since the question was ostensibly aimed at Debs I didn’t want to confuse her with the concept that “or” doesn’t necessarily exclude “and.”

Comment #23: Gracchus.  on  04/07  at  01:13 PM

”...I didn’t want to confuse her with the concept that “or” doesn’t necessarily exclude “and.””

...which is a reasonable response to her level of idiocy.  that’s why I want so badly for wingnut media figures (and she is one) to be forced to acknowledge what they are really saying, instead of using dog whistles and pretending innocence.

Make them face their own words and defend them.  If we’re lucky, they might think about what they are saying and how harmful it is.  At worst, it’ll be like Limbaugh defending his statement that he wants Obama to fail — it made him look really bad and further tainted the Republican Party…

Comment #24: MikeEss  on  04/07  at  01:36 PM

And let’s not forget that she goes on to say that the center was “allegedly” helping people who came to the country illegally. Does she think that illegal immigrants should be murdered? How insane is this woman.

And Gracchus, did she really graduate from the University of Michigan? I’m afraid if that’s true you have ruined my whole day. The Unabomber was bad enough.

Comment #25: DC Fem  on  04/07  at  01:46 PM

And Gracchus, did she really graduate from the University of Michigan?

Her Web site bio was the source of that quote, but given that “cynical liar” possiblility, who except the U. Mich alumni office knows for sure? These types traffick in self-serving falsehoods about themselves just as easily as they do in lies about others.

Comment #26: Gracchus.  on  04/07  at  02:31 PM

I’d really, really, really like to see someone - a news anchor, whatever - respond to these…individuals with one question:

“What if he actually is Muslim?  So what?”

Never going to happen.

You’re going to get questions like “If Barack HUSSEIN Obama was a muslim or an atheist, which would be worse?”

Comment #27: cynickal  on  04/07  at  02:50 PM

some of the victims may have been taking citizenship classes even though their English was less than perfect?

Many people write in a second language much better than they talk in a second language.  Moreover, if Schlussel was one of those hostages, I somehow doubt she’d be able to do such a fine job of speaking English, either.  I’ve never known another language, but I’m not so sure anything I’d have to say would be particularly intelligible at that point.

Comment #28: Ms Kate  on  04/07  at  03:38 PM

You’re wrong that Schlussel “scrapes the bottom of the barrel”. She is the scraper (tool, if you will) in this metaphor.

Comment #29: austinfidel  on  04/07  at  06:48 PM

Does all this SuperSeekrit Moozlim dogwhistling mean the “Obama wasn’t really born in Hawaii!” chestnut is finally dying a long-deserved death?

Because that’s the one my own personal Right-Wing Dad clings to.

I always hated that. Because now not only do we have a smart President, a cool President, a black President—we also have a Hawaiian President!

I just wish he wore Hawaiian shirts from time to time.

That’s what I would do whenever Natasha and I headed for Sacramento to lobby the Lege and Gov. Schwarzenegger for disability rights. I would not wear a suit, for we were Californians!

More on topic—obviously Obama was saying he is an American, like many others, whose life has been enriched by contacts and connections with Muslims.

(Come to think of it, in another, um, cruder sense, so has the Bush crime family…)

Anyway, while I have no known Muslim relatives, I’ve had friends from Islamic countries. So I’m pretty much in the same category Obama put himself in, almost.

Debbie Schlussel scrapes the bottom of the barrel

I didn’t know she could reach that high.

Comment #31: Sophist FCD  on  04/07  at  10:57 PM

i just want to echo the sentiment that evn if Obama were a Muslim, that’s okay.

because we are not a “Christian Nation”, it (theoretically at least) doesn’t matter what religion one is. frankly, if he WERE a Muslim, i probably would have voted for him in the primary instead.
