Follow-Up: National Car Rental Responds To Harassment And Threats Story Of Sarah Vestal

One of my co-bloggers, Autumn, received a response from the national office of National Car Rental regarding the post “Blend Exclusive - National Car Rental Employee To Trans Customer: “Screwed-Up Man Faggot”.”

by Autumn Sandeen, Pam’s House Blend

I received an update from National Car Rental with a return call today. My call to them Saturday was the first their public relations people heard of it—which really isn’t surprising as the facility at the Little Rock, Arkansas, is a franchise.

But, spokesperson Christie Conrad added this:

We’re going to look into this; this kind of behavior is not tolerated.

It was very clear to me that National Car Rental’s national office was not pleased to hear this story at all, and the way Ms. Conrad said—and repeated multiple times—the “is not tolerated” statement in the phone call sounded like National Car Rental meant that in all capital letters, with three exclamation points to boot.

If—or really “when”—National Car Rental verifies the veracity of Sarah Vestal being harassed and threatened, It’ll be interesting to see what happens to this franchise.

But for a first response, the “is not tolerated” statement was expressed strongly, clearly, and apparently very sincerely—kudos to National Car Rental’s national office on this first response.

Note: Sgt. Byron McWhirter of the Little Rock PD, who first spoke with Sarah on Friday, says another officer has been assigned to investigate the incident, but are having difficulty identifying who the person is that threatened to assault her, and deal with the officer who Sarah said when she approached him about the incident “he could not do anything since the man did not physically hit me.”

...but are having difficulty identifying who the person is that threatened to assault her…

Sterling police work there, Sherlock.  How many freakin’ people work there?  Could you ask the victim for description?  *headslap*

threatened to assault

Threatened battery—assault is a threat, battery is the actual consumation.  If Little Rock really never prosecuted anyone unless the victim was physically hit, they’d never prosecute an assault case at all.

(Victim: “Officer, he emptied his pistol at me!  Six shots, all aimed at my head!  Thank heavens he missed!”
Officer: “Well, I’m sorry, but I cannot not do anything since the man did not physically hit you.”)

I’m glad Officer “Mack” has been pulled off the case.  Is he being investigated for being a complete dick and failing to understand assault is a crime?

As for not being able to identify the man who assaulted her…she complained to two other employees at the rental car place.  They don’t know who works there?  They don’t have a sign-in sheet/timecard/schedule?  They don’t have cameras?  They don’t have ID badges for employees AT AN AIRPORT?

Bullshit.  These assclowns are backing up the homophobe, and the only reason I suspect the police might file a report is if there is enough media attention.

The real hope of repercussions comes from the national National Car.  The main body may be able to force their franchisee to fire that thug under threat of pulling his franchise.

But justice doesn’t seem to be coming from law enforcement.

“Having trouble identifying” means no one is willing to fess up or to finger their co-worker. From a beyond-a-reasonable-doubt point of view, no doubt they’re right—even if the time sheets and the surveillance appear to make things clear, without an eyewitness (all Vestal has to do is waste another few days flying back to the jurisdiction) they don’t have proof. But they’ve sure as heck got some suspects. And they still need to bone up on basic law…

Rental car forms are usually rather detailed—wouldn’t the employee have had to at least initial it somewhere?

They should threaten to fire everyone who worked that day. In this economy, someone will rat out the culprit.

Sorry I’m late to this and your great post about Warren ditching Stephanopolous’ show but I’ve been out in the country. If you’re not too busy calling out other lying creeps, can you spare a minute for the head of the white supremacist organization and blog that the Pittsburgh shooter read and posted to? Now the guy is saying he’s not a racist but a libertarian. Probably to avoid the civil suit that will surely be coming from the widows or the Southern Poverty Law Center.
