Friday Cats & Girl Tunes

Switching it up from the usual Friday Genius Ten, because a friend asked me to participate in a music mix exchange last week, and I thought I’d share what I came up with.  The exchange was called “Girls Girls Girls”, and there were three rules: 1) every song in your mix had to have a woman’s name in the title 2) it had to be under 80 minutes and 3) no repeats of what someone else had on their list.

My personal rules for making mixes are 1) try to mix hits with more obscure stuff to keep ‘em guessing and 2) try to mix the old and the new, same reason.  This is what I came up with.  I’d love to hear in comments some of your favorite songs with women’s names in the titles.  I also try to do what the main character in “High Fidelity” did, in terms of starting with a bang, though I can’t remember some of the other rules for mix tapes in that book.

  1. “Sheena Is a Punk Rocker” – The Ramones
  2. “Billie Jean” – Michael Jackson
  3. “Rory Rides Me Raw” – The Vaselines
  4. “Shirley” – L7
  5. “Valerie” – Mark Ronson (with Amy Winehouse)
  6. “Tunic (Song for Kare)” – Sonic Youth
  7. “Annette’s Got the Hits” – Golden Triangle
  8. “Lady Marmalade” – Patti Labelle
  9. “Veronica” – Elvis Costello
  10. “Emmaretta” – Deep Purple
  11. “Archie & Veronica” – Lovage
  12. “Ana Ng” – They Might Be Giants
  13. “Mary Millington” – The Disco Zombies
  14. “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town” – Cake
  15. “Lola” – The Raincoats
  16. “Help Me, Rhonda” – The Beach Boys
  17. “Jolene” – Dolly Parton
  18. “Jenny Take a Ride” – Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels
  19. “Justine” – The Righteous Brothers
  20. “Marla” – Grizzly Bear

“Justine” was a late minute edition, put in after I heard two covers of it by two separate bands on the same night.  Videos below the fold, as well as a special “same pose” cat picture.

If you know me well, you could guess the two songs I was absolutely going to put on this mix were going to be “Jolene” and of course this one, which could be my all-time favorite cover.

I don’t like Amy Winehouse.  I’ll say this up front.  I think she’s a pretender, and I think she’s only popular because of the Dap Kings and Mark Ronson supporting her.  That said, this song that Ronson put on his own album with her is a real pick-me-up, and I like it even with the presence of Winehouse hamming it up.  Maybe it’s because it goes too fast for her to indulge some of her more annoying habits.

I love this song probably out of proportion to how good it is.  But it’s very, very good:

Another cover:

One of the parts of moving to NYC that’s new to us is the existence of radiators.  We don’t have these in Texas.  I have no idea why they’re better, or if they’re better, but we’ve been fascinated by them.  (Particularly their usefulness when it comes to drying out clothes on a rack set next to them.)  We’re not the only ones who’ve found them fascinating, though.  The radiator in our bedroom especially heats up a spot on the floor, and the cats think this is the best thing that’s happened, short of sunbeams.  (Luckily, as the radiator heat fades, they’re getting more sunbeams. Spring!)  When the radiator is really going strong, there will pretty much always be at least one cat sleeping in the warm spot.  I got both these pictures within an afternoon, if I recall correctly.

Molly in the warm spot

Dusty in the warm spot

Comment #3: Mighty Ponygirl  on  03/26  at  10:48 AM

that is a great mix. I think all good mixes start with a rule or a concept (for instance, imaginary indie road trip movie soundtrack, or bedtime music, or, uh, girls names) but then I impose some rules similar to yours too.
You picked several of the songs I had in mind. I’d also include:
Jessica - The Allman Brothers
Michelle - The Beatles
Elouise - Say Hi

Comment #4: bethany  on  03/26  at  10:51 AM

I wish I’d thought of “Darling Nikki”, dammit.  Funny part is I had a moment of thinking I should put Prince on there, but felt that Michael Jackson was holding down the spot for 80s-era pop music.

Comment #5: Amanda Marcotte  on  03/26  at  10:53 AM

[smacks forehead] Why did I pick Show Me Mary when I could have put Judy Staring at the Sun? Oh well.

Good catch on Charlotte Sometimes and Jane Says, Dr. Loc.

Comment #6: Mighty Ponygirl  on  03/26  at  10:53 AM

I was surprised Prince wasn’t on your list as well!  The annoying part is that out of all the songs I listed, the one that’s still doing the ear worm thing even as I type is that damn Toto song.  “Meet you all the way!  Rosaaaa, ha-naaaaa, yeah!”

Comment #7: Dr. Locrian  on  03/26  at  11:10 AM

One of the few really good Family Guy jokes is on this theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErPsx8zdnX4

Comment #8: BABH  on  03/26  at  11:11 AM

In semi-alphabetical order (selection mostly based on what amused me the most to include):

1) Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles (my favorite Beatles song, period)
2) J-E-N-O-V-A by The Black Mages (video game fans know what I’m talking about)
3) Joan Crawford by Blue Oyster Cult (sorry, I’m not sure how to umlaut)
4) Anna Maria by Boa (great Japanese artist)
5) Goodnight Julia by Yoko Kanno (anime fans know what I’m talking about)
6) Dear Abby by Dead Kennedys (Snark evisceration)
7) Mandy Goes to Med School by The Dresden Dolls (Ditto)
8) Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by The Flaming Lips (Fun fact, my cat is named Yoshimi because of my partner’s love of this song)
9) Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac (You got to respect the classics)
10) Supergirl by Gina Young (Cheating by way of DC Universe)
11) April & June by Indochine (Wanted to include some of my international stuff)
12) Cross-Eyed Mary by Jethro Tull (...I like Tull)
13) Charlotte by Kittie (Had to include them by law)
14) Lucretia by Megadeth (Why not?)
15) Crow Jane by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (Murder Ballads was a great album)
16) Maria by No Relax (See Indochine’s note)
17) Marlene on the Wall by Suzanne Vega (German name, sneaky)
18) Crepuscule with Nellie by Thelonious Monk (I was all set to make this a jazz heavy list and unfortunately my collection let me down, not nearly enough female names or even names in general)
19) Texas Annie by The Wet Spots (Mua ha ha)
20) Jezebel by 10,000 Maniacs (Ending biblically)

Comment #11: rea  on  03/26  at  11:25 AM

One thing I noticed is that so many of my “girl” songs have no actual names and for actual names, it’s really easy to get a setlist that’s 70s rock heavy because of the “someone in the band would like to sleep with X person or would like to give a shout out to their current beau” songs.

Overall I like my setlist as something to listen to as well, though I wish I could have packed in more jazz, ah vell.

Comment #12: Cerberus  on  03/26  at  11:25 AM

And since “Michelle” was already taken, I’ll substitute Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.

What?  No 52 Girls?

Comment #17: Ms Kate  on  03/26  at  12:12 PM

I love radiators - and so do the cats.  Fiona came to live with us in November and quickly discovered that the bathroom radiator is oversized for the room, and it has a rug next to it!

My sons have long laid out their clothes each night on the radiator.  When they get up, instant warm!

Radiators are better, IMHO, because they ramp the heat up and down.  They don’t just turn on and off ... they sit there and cool off slowly and keep the temps even.  That, and you can sit by them all evening and be warm on a very cold night because they don’t totally cool off.

Comment #18: Ms Kate  on  03/26  at  12:16 PM

We have radiators, and they’re great.  In a way, they’re like having a fireplace in the room.  Wet coats and hats go on the one just inside the vestibule doors, and if my work boots are wet, I’ll leave them by that radiator as well.  The house stays so toasty that we have the radiator in our bedroom shut off, or it would roast us out.  The biggest problem is a significant temperature difference between the first and second floors.

Princess Leia camps near the radiator in Summer’s room, but the other cats don’t really park near them.

Comment #19: Dana  on  03/26  at  12:25 PM

I’m going to warn you all that this is going to come out very, very weird. I also have to take some liberties with the concept—there will be many songs in here that are less with a woman’s name and more about a woman so striking that she blew the songwriter away, and least one about the songwriter herself…

“Only Want To Be With You”, Dusty Springfield
“Metroid/Samus Strut”, AmIEvil/OCRemix.org
“Rosalita”, Bruce Springsteen
“Bitch”, Meredith Brooks
“Amie”, Pure Prairie League
“Ruby Tuesday”, The Rolling Stones
“Adia”, Sarah Maclachlan
“Cecelia”, Simon and Garfunkel
“Roxanne”, Sting (remake from “All This Time”)
“Gloria” (either the angry, derisive Laura Brannigan version or the fetishy, obsessed original by Umberto Tozzi)
“Joanna”, Kool and the Gang
“Bette Davis Eyes”, Jackie DeShannon (for no particular reason except that it’s so different from the Kim Carnes remake that it’s barely recognizeable)
“Bernadette”, The Four Tops
“Short Skirt Long Jacket”, Cake
“Maria”, Blondie

(Don’t you give me that about Dusty. You *know* she was singing to a girl in that song.)

Amanda,
I love those old wood floors, though they can be cold during winter here in the Northeast.  Throw rugs help with that, and they stay nicely cool during the summer.

Without starting up the movie (if the rules in the mover were the same as the book (which I’ve never read)), it’s something like:

Start off with a bang
Bring it back a bit (but not too much)
Kick it back up some more
Keep it up

Something like that. Also the rule about being aware of using somebody else’s poetry to express what you’re trying to say. They’re not bad, but I never agreed with them.

My rules tend to either be ‘whatever the hell I want that fits the mood and flow’ which sometimes comes off a bit like shifting gears without a clutch. Or try to pick a song that starts in a manner similar to how the one before ended. That second one is probably what I use more now. The only example I have to give is not in keeping with the current them. Perhaps some other time.

I love how Tom Bergeron says that OchoCinco “He made a name for himself – he just looked down at his jersey and made up a name.”

He’s pretty good, right? He moves pretty well. My husband has just informed me that he’s from Miami! How nice for him. Good extension. Let’s see what the judges say! Let’s see if we can understand it!

Len likes it. He says he’s a “rough diamond.” Who replaced Len with a happy person?

Bruno is being cheeky, as usual, about his “huge, huge…talent.” (Family show, Bruno.)

Carrie Ann loves it, too, although she thinks he needs to work on his extension and remember his choreography. Eh. I thought he was good. It’s hard enough remembering a new name medical school.

This is quite the impressive list.

In the spririt of “no songs mentioned previously” one is quite restricted.

So, I’ll add:

“Juliet” - Red Elvises
“Fucking Ada” - Ian Dury and the Blockheads
“Quiche Lorraine” - B-52’s (OK, nothing to do with a woman or girl, except that the dog in the song has a girl’s name, and that original theme was just that the song had to have a woman’s name inthe title.)
“Zina-Marina” - Gogol Bordello
“Town Called Malice” - The Jam (“Alice” is in the title, just not as a distinct word.  OK,that’s a real stretch.  Hey, I design software so look at these edge cases in real life.)
“Reconnez Cherie” - Wreckless Eric
“Headache for Michelle” - Au Pair

So here’s my list. I’m actually kind of surprised some of these haven’t come up. I also cut anything nebulous (A Mrs. Jones, a Miss Jones, a Miss America, Lady Stardust, some with ‘Mother’ in the title) since that’s above my pay grade. But sticking to the rules here’s what I have in my iTunes:

My Sharona - The Knack
Jean is Dead - Descendents
Welcome Back Victoria - Jesus Jones
Für Elise - Beethoven
Barbara H - Fountains of Wayne
Be My Yoko Ono - Barenaked Ladies
Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle - Nirvana
Tara - Fish
Maggie’s Farm - Rage Against the Machine
Lady Nina - Marillion
Polly - Nirvana
Jane - Barenaked Ladies
All the Girls Love Alice - Elton John
Denise - Fountains of Wayne
The Difference (In the Garden of St. Anne’s-on-the-Hill) - King’s X
Punch & Judy - Marillion
Enid - Barenaked Ladies
Revolving Dora - Fountains of Wayne
Linus & Lucy - Vince Guarlaldi Trio
The Tears Of Audrey - Kevin Gilbert
Song for Emma - Joe Walsh

Just under 80 minutes.

It sounds like you need to have a HVAC plumer adjust your zone valves.

As if we had them!  While the boiler is relatively new (installed in 1999), the radiators and the distribution system for them are probably half a century old.  The house itself is somewhere between 98 and 112 years old; we’ve heard several different construction dates, but don’t know for certain.  The heating system is an add-on, and I don’t know the date on it.

One radiator is immediately inside the vestibule doors, which also puts it at the foot of the stairs to the second floor.  If I turned that radiator off, perhaps the heat between the first and second floors would be more even.

Amanda, I love those old wood floors, though they can be cold during winter here in the Northeast.  Throw rugs help with that, and they stay nicely cool during the summer.

They look very much like mine, which are fir, not a hardwood.  My monitor at work isn’t very good, and the floors looked blah to me yesterday; this is the first time I’ve looked at the pictures with a good monitor.  Unfortunately, I need to refinish my floors.

I must have missed some, bcs it can’t really be that these haven’t been mentioned yet, can it?

Angie   -  Stones

And does it count if the woman is unnamed, or does that just reinforce the patriarchal construct?
