Friday Genius Ten “Against Normal” Edition

I was a little late to the Janelle Monae bandwagon, but I picked up her LP, and I’ve been completely addicted.  Monae has pulled off a task that very few can, which is to be both super poppy and arty weird.  And don’t flap your gums at me about Lady Gaga, who has a self-consciously weird public persona, but whose music isn’t even in the same category of ear-catching freshness.  My mind went to Roxy Music when I first heard it, but also to Prince and to Outkast.  It isn’t a surprise that her big single is with Big Boi, therefore.

So here’s my Genius Ten.  Leave yours in comments, or comment on whatever you like.  As usual, this is an open thread.

Original song: “Tightrope” by Janelle Monae (featuring Big Boi)

1) “The Cell” by Eryka Badu
2) “Beep Me 911” by Missy Elliott
3) “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul” by Gnarls Barkley
4) “How Long Do I Have To Wait For You” by Sharon Jones
5) “Nothing Even Matters” by Lauryn Hill
6) “Adore” by Prince
7) “Who’s Loving You” by The Jackson 5
8) “Got To Give It Up” by Marvin Gaye
9) “All I Could Do Is Cry” by Etta James
10) “Don’t Leave Me This Way” by Thelma Houston

Videos below the fold.

And a little disco to get you going this morning:

sigh!  Another week, and no cat pics!  I figured that after you’d been away from the critters, they’d be especially cute in greeting you upon your return.

My cat’s cuteness doesn’t go up when we go away for awhile. The level of yowling, however, remains elevated for a few days.

Janelle Monae is indeed awesome and I love how the genius list makes a plausible map of her influences.

In all honesty, I can’t get into Gaga because she sounds so much better even on compressed live videos posted to youtube than on her studio tracks. Her studio production definitely has that compressed, processed, and canned feel that sounds like decade-old speech synthesis and grates in my nerves.

Tightrope is practically a perfectly-crafted song. Monae’s vocal chops are amazing. The album is exhausting because she pulls influences from the last 50 years of pop music, from short symphonic interludes, to vocoder-heavy psychadelic to tracks that are almost rockabilly in groove, and still manages to pull together a musical and thematic unity across the tracks.

And, I love the bassline of tightrope. If it was human, I’d buy a notebook to write love notes to it.

Holy crap that’s amazing. ... and purchased. A friend is going to be very interested in the Of Montreal song.

Comment #4: Mighty Ponygirl  on  07/30  at  10:44 AM

How much of a heretic am I for saying that I found Tightrope to be rather tediously monotonous and prefer Lady Gaga’s tunes?  But then I also happen to think that Auto-Tune is a gift to modern music…

Comment #5: Mandos  on  07/30  at  10:59 AM

Roxy Music, Prince and Outkast? I oddly agree. Odd in that I don’t like too much Roxy Music, Prince or Outkast yet Janelle Monae consistently rocks my world. This genius list will only underscore how little modern R&B;I’ve got.

I’m a guest-artist on my own album y’all biscuitheads edition:

Base Song: “Come Around” - Timbaland featuring MIA

1. “These Arms Of Mine” - Otis Redding
2. “The Love You Save” - Jackson 5
3. “Chain of Fools” - Aretha Franklin
4. “Jungle Boogie” - Kool & The Gang
5. “Sex Machine” - James Brown
6. “Pusherman” - Curtis Mayfield
7. “Low Rider” - War
8. “You And I” - Rick James
9. “Higher Ground” - Stevie Wonder
10. “Mustang Sally” - Wilson Pickett

Bonus: “Love Machine” - The Miracles

OK, even odder. Anyone know why previewing a post here always puts a semicolon after R&B;? Fallen afoul of some odd code methinks.

For fans of vintage moog and electronica, might I heartily recommend 36-15 Moog. I’ve added a few gems, including my personal hero Hugo Montenegro. However, there is still only about a 1.5% chance they will show up in the Random 10:

1. The Third Man Theme by The Band / 2. Dark Lines by Gossip / 3. I Must be Dreamin’ by The Coasters / 4. Leaving Trunk by Taj Mahal / 5. I’m an Old, Old Man by Lefty Frizzell / 6. Waitin’ for the Night by The Runaways / 7. Tic-tac-toe by Booker T. and the MGs / 8. Weak Brain, Narrow Mind by Willie Dixon / 9. Oh Yeah by Los Lobos / 10. The House The Street The Room by Gentle Giant

If we’re talking about creative, layered pop-fusion, Kelis (who never did much for me before) just dropped a new LP, Flesh Tone. The first track nods to Goblin, for crying out loud, in its synth opening. The album is laced with disco, good Madonna, club, funk, etc etc. I also love her husky, chipped voice against the clear boppy-pop backdrop quite a bit—a change from the expected overprocessed bubblegum voices that usually accompany it.

(Come to think of it, Intro’s intro may be more Wendy Carlos than Goblin. Anyway, the Moog speaks.)

Comment #9: Ranylt  on  07/30  at  11:44 AM

That’s very, very Goblin.

Comment #10: Amanda Marcotte  on  07/30  at  11:59 AM

It’s also very A Clockwork Orange overture.

Monae’s entire album is a revelation. Thank God for freaky ATLiens coming back… Big Boi’s new album is not quite as freaky, but it’s amazing too.

Comment #12: JoeBlubaugh  on  07/30  at  01:38 PM

I’ve been listening to Monae’s album almost non-stop for months. It’s my pick for album of the year, succeeding Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. Everyone can pack up and go home.

How in God’s name did I miss this magnificent song?  I’m making a trip to the record store, like, NAO.

Anyway, my list:
1.  Same Old Song and Dance - Aerosmith
2.  I Won’t Back Down - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
3.  Please Don’t Tell Her I Have a Girlfriend - Reel Big Fish
4.  All Kinds of People - Sheryl Crow
5.  Do Not Go Quietly Unto Your Grave - Morphine
6.  Sold Out - Sleater-Kinney
7.  Flat Earth Society - Bad Religion
8.  Stand Together - Beastie Boys
9.  Collapse - Soul Coughing
10.  I Don’t Know Her - One-eyed Monkey

That said, I have thousands of songs I can listen to at any point, but I’ve been having a hard time NOT listening to Cowboy Mouth because I met the band this past weekend and had a total nerdgasm.  Meeting your heroes and learning that they are actually really nice is amazing.

The Etta James is lovely, but I’ve got to plug the Tina Turner version. Raw and amazing. Can’t find a video online anywhere, but a sample is here:
