Friday Genius Ten “Bears!” Edition

When I got up this morning and thought about “mama grizzlies”, suddenly something occurred to me that explains the whole thing: As usual, Republicans are just trying to grab onto something in pop culture in a pathetic bid for relevance.  Just like Michael Steele grabbed for hip hop, John McCain is tweeting at the cast members of “Jersey Shore”, and this atrocity happened, well perhaps Sarah Palin is trying to pick up on the “bear” trend.  What bear trend?  Well, a couple of years ago there was a sudden trend of band names featuring the word “bear”: Panda Bear, Minus the Bear, Angry vs. the Bear.  Perhaps Sarah Palin heard about this trend from Meghan McCain, and in classic GOP fashion, decided to poach it without understanding it in the slightest.

Hey, it’s a theory.  Also an excuse to use on of my favorite “bear” songs for the Genius Ten today.  Leave yours in comments, or consider the comments and open thread to talk about whatever you like.  Happy Friday!

Original song: “While You Wait For The Others” by Grizzly Bear (See?  Grizzlies.  Though I don’t imagine that Sarah Palin would approve of how they got the name, which is from Edward Droste’s old boyfriend’s nickname.)

1) “Stillness Is The Move” by the Dirty Projectors
2) “Golden Age” by TV on the Radio
3) “Crystalised” by XX
4) “Postcards From Italy” by Beirut
5) “To Kingdom Come” by Passion Pit
6) “All My Friends” by LCD Soundsystem
7) “Neighborhood #1” by Arcade Fire
8) “Dull Life” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
9) “Never Had Nobody Like You” by M. Ward
10) “Hearts On Fire” by Cut Copy

Videos below the fold.

Great band name would be Elisha and the Bears (2 Kings 2:23):  “Go on up, you baldhead!”

So sad that Our Sarah has decided to throw in her lot with the Godless Killing Machines.

Is there an understanding to be had about the bear bands? I don’t understand it in the slightest either.

Dunno, think she is trying to cash in the environment trend. Polar bears on ice, grizzly bears, etc… Doubt she is savvy enough to even know there was a bear trend :p

On other topic, the epic nice guy explained

Personally, I think it’s just another use to snag from one of the animals she <strike>trophy-shoots</strike> hunts and likes to think that she’s more powerful than.

Comment #6: Kyra  on  07/16  at  12:55 PM

I normally don’t do this, but some of those videos are extra wide and are spilling over into the right hand margin in Firefox.  It just looks sloppy.  Ok, I’ll shut up now.

You missed Colbert’s #1 Threat.

#1 video: 12 string electric!!!  You don’t see them too often.

Somehow, I suspect her first thought if asked about music/bands that involve bears would be The Teddybear’s Picnic.  I loved that song when I was a kid.

Comment #9: fluffster  on  07/16  at  02:05 PM

Kyra, hunters have a long, long tradition of identifying with their prey and revering them, even while decimating their populations and driving them to the brink of oblivion. Just look at wolves. Is there any other animal more widely thought of as noble and majestic while simultaneously treated as a pest and exterminated with a fervor not directed at cockroaches?

I’m sure the mama grizzly thing has more to do with being from Alaska and the token reverence bestowed on an animal she and hers would have killed off already if it weren’t for the pinko commie environmentalists. Of course, even if they had, she’d still be invoking its image.

That I already have/love 8 of the 11 songs in Amanda’s genius mix this week is awesome, and strongly suggests I check out XX, Beirut, and M. Ward. You’re sort of like my Pandora station.

Comment #11: mobvok  on  07/16  at  03:08 PM

This is a great list and a reminder to check out Passion Pit, because I you’re the 3rd person whose taste in music I trust who likes them.

But mostly I wanted to stop and comment on the ad below this post, which is a video of a fat girl riding a mechanical bull and getting thrown off while dudes laugh at her. It’s exactly the sort of thing I’m seeking respite from when I look at feminist blogs. I know you don’t always have control over what ads go up, but if you can block ads, please block that one. It’s gross.

Comment #12: Declan McManus, International Art Thief  on  07/16  at  04:23 PM

In order to preserve editorial integrity, Pandagon follows the industry standard of not censoring ads based on ideology.  To do so would be to implicitly endorse the content of all other ads, which would contaminate our ability to say we are speaking freely about what we really think.  To preserve our integrity, therefore, we observe the industry standard of a strict wall between advertising and editorial.

Comment #13: Amanda Marcotte  on  07/16  at  05:17 PM

Or maybe it’s more GOP homoerotic projection and secretly, they’re all closeted Bears.

Comment #14: Keith  on  07/16  at  05:18 PM

And I’ll add that part of the problem is once you start opening up the ad banning based on content, ideology, general offensiveness, it basically never ends.  They try to make sure that nothing that offends any readers goes up at Feministing, and it’s black hole of having to deal with reader complaints and blocking ads, sucking up huge amounts of time that would be better spent on writing, researching, networking, being a positive force.

Comment #15: Amanda Marcotte  on  07/16  at  05:22 PM

I don’t think Palin means this kind of bear.
