Friday Genius Ten “By Gum, I Support Those Protests” Edition

I’ve gotten emails from people asking why I haven’t blogged about the situation in Wisconsin.  To which, I wish to reply that there’s two models of blogging.  There’s the model where you comment on anything of importance, even if you have nothing of value to add, to register that you’re paying attention.  Then there’s the model where you only write about things that you personally feel you have an interesting angle on.  I’m in the latter camp.  I am skeptical of the claims that simply noticing things publicly does anything more than bolster the ego of the blogger.  The situation in Wisconsin is amazing, but I have nothing to say beyond that, since others are more tuned into union politics than I am.  My feeling right now is that my talents are best served at keeping an eye on the ever-wackier tone of wingnuts and the threats to reproductive rights, two stories that could get washed out during a news cycle loaded with exciting events like the Egyptian uprising and the Wisconsin protests.

But hey, what’s Friday Genius Ten for if not simple gestures of support through song dedications?  And of course, the only way to do that is to build the Genius Ten off the most famous band out of Wisconsin, the Violent Femmes. Many of my favorite songs by them are dark, but this one I think is, profanity aside, a great pick-me-up song, which is what you need when you’re fighting the good fight. Leave yours in comments, comments about whatever you think is relevant, or whatever you like.  Open thread.

For good coverage of the events in Wisconsin, check out Talking Points Memo.

Original song: “Dance, Motherfucker, Dance!” by the Violent Femmes

1) “Your Racist Friend” by They Might Be Giants
2) “Soul Suckin Jerk” by Beck
3) “Gone!” by The Cure
4) “I’m Amazed” by The Pixies
5) “Piss Up A Rope” by Ween
6) “Stop!” by Jane’s Addiction
7) “Candy” by Morphine
8) “I Don’t Want To Grow Up” by Tom Waits
9) “Trainspotting” by Primal Scream
10) “Romance” by REM

Geek music day!  Videos and cat pics below the fold.

A good song for the occasion, as the unions are telling their governor to stop the assholery:

The cats are adapting well to the new place, and to my Instagram app on iPhone.

Thanks for the shout-out, Amanda! All we want is people to know that Shit is Going Down.

BTW, if any of you Twitter types are interested, people are tweeting from the protests under #killThisBill. (My attempts yesterday to get #stormTheCapitol going didn’t work. Boo.)

Comment #2: Hobbes  on  02/18  at  11:25 AM

I would add “Turn This Mother Out” because what the Dem’s did is pretty bad ass in my opinion and shows some backbone that is so refreshing. As someone who credits her middle class upbringing to a union (the UAW) I am 100% behind the protesters in Wisconsin. Keep fighting the good fight, you’ve got a lot of people behind you cheering you on.

Solidarity, Wisconsin! I work at a public entity that is refusing to negotiate with the unions in good faith, having recently hired an administrator who is pretty clearly here to union-bust. Because, you know, all public employees are lazy, selfish, and spoiled. (According to the newspaper’s op-ed page. Thanks assholes)

The problem is over furlough days, and this entity lying about the budget problems to justify them. You see, our union members want to work, and we also want to be paid for our work. The nerve! The gall of these unions, demanding pay in exchange for work!*

*Work doesn’t stop needing to be done just because you aren’t getting paid that day, so you’ll end up staying late the rest of that week to finish it.

While I am huge fan of Morphine (RIP Mark Sandman), my friends & I used to joke that the line “Candy says she’s made arrangements for me in the sand” sounded suspiciously like saying “I went ahead & dug a grave for you in the sand”.

Comment #7: Mark  on  02/18  at  01:14 PM

I got a wacky wingnut tone for you, billboard, for a school, “A free thinker is satan’s slave.” Can see here: http://bit.ly/esSUp2 . Woo hoo! I got dibs on all the knowledge on that tree! (I do not get how people can look out at the universe and not feel awe, and want to see and understand it all (loved your recent science post btw).) (And stay the hell away from Oklahoma, Sally Kern been busy: http://bit.ly/gkiTA6 )

What a huge moment in Wisconsin, hoping it turns into a watershed moment in our country’s history, glued to news. TPM doing a kickass job with coverage. Yawgmoth put it beautifully, Solidarity, Wisconsin!

Loved the music, got some to add: Oh My God, from Ida Maria, and two from Sleigh Bells (bubblegum pop meets hardcore punk), Rill Rill (“Have a Heart”) and Infinity Guitars (“Street Wars”) and a sweet cordial to finish, Zaz, Je Veux, (“Forget all your prejudice, welcome to my reality”) (in that overdone genre, french gypsy jazz on the kazoo):

heart http://bit.ly/eRiRUw
infinity http://bit.ly/eyLWiF

You are awesome, Amanda. Eat well, love well, take good care of yourself, we need you around for a long time. And if you’re ever in Atlanta, come visit!

Thanks for the shout out guys, Wisconsin needs all the luv it can get! Particularly because the local Milwaukee rag, the Milwaukee Journal sentinel is linking to, of all people, Robert Stacy McCain, declaring that the Unions and democrats whined about “civility” when it came to the tea party, but are now the height of incivility.  Er, Bobby, I think there might be a difference between racist and gun happy retoric of the tea party and demanding that workers be treated fairly.

Speaking of both protests and reproductive rights - Planned Parenthood of New York City is holding a Rally for Women’s Health on February 26th from 1-3.

Comment #10: rivki  on  02/18  at  02:58 PM

CNN’s front page right now has a poll on people’s view of labor unions. Right now it’s at 57% negative. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s being manipulated by some union-busting conservative organization. It might help somewhat if more people go over there and click the ‘positive’ option. Can’t hurt anyway.

Comment #11: snobographer  on  02/18  at  03:18 PM

I should be speaking at that rally, so yes, come out!

I should have known. smile

I already RSVPd. It looks like a few friends are going to come with me.

For the people with Spotify, here’s a playlist of the 100 best songs of the aughts, according to a Swedish music columnist:
http://open.spotify.com/user/jennydamberg/playlist/3Reg5uLBSeosXe8r7kgjMP

Hope that’s ok to share, I’m not much for giving my own music recommendations, since I don’t feel qualified, but that playlist did get me to listen to a bunch of music I otherwise wouldn’t, so that was nice.

Comment #15: AndersH  on  02/18  at  04:12 PM

On Wisconsin! My sister is in the capitol building!

Comment #16: Ursula  on  02/18  at  04:22 PM

I’ll be at that rally as well! See you there, Amanda and rivki!

A big SALUTE to my brothers and sisters in Wisconsin.  SOLIDARITY FOREVER.

I work for AFSCME Local 11, the union that will be destroyed if Gov. Kasich gets his anti-union legislation passed in Ohio.  Actually they’ll all be destroyed, but we’ll be the first.

Heavy rotation on my play list of late includes:
Pearl Jam - Down
B. Springsteen & Tom Morello - Ghost of Tom Joad.
Anything loud - I’ve got a lot of pent up aggravation by the end of the day.

Comment #18: ummeli  on  02/18  at  06:22 PM

Went over to CNN to weigh in on the poll (thanks, snobographer @11). and their Newspulse show that the most popular stores right now (2:15 pm PST) are:

  1.  Diver apparently killed by sharks
  2.  Backlash over Bieber’s view on abortion
  3.  Planned Parenthood debate takes personal turn
  4.  Reflections from SI’s first swimsuit model

Thank dog that at least one of these is about something important, even if Wisconsin didn’t make the top five.  Sigh.

Comment #19: NobleExperiments  on  02/18  at  07:18 PM

And after the unions are destroyed, the rest of the remaining middle class will be destroyed.

I despair of enough of the 99% of the country against whom the elite are waging class war ever waking up to that fact.

Comment #20: James  on  02/18  at  10:42 PM

Solidarity with my brother and sister unionists in Wisconsin!

I’m not living in Wisconsin any more, but I’m a born and bred Wisconsinite and I’m very proud of my peeps there who are taking part in the protests. I’d be there, but there’s this large puddle called the Atlantic Ocean in my way.

Also, it might be that I’m experiencing some kind of weird YouTube glitch, but that video for Morphine’s “Candy” isn’t playing for me as Morphine, and it isn’t their song “Candy.” On Googling, it seems it’s Tom Geiger’s “Vicious Times.” Nice song, but it ain’t Morphine. smile

I don’t have iTunes or Genius, so I’m just doing a randomized list:

1. The Police - Miss Gradenko
2. Nina Simone - Feeling Good
3. Pink Floyd - Pigs on the Wing Pt. 1
4. Soul Coughing - Sugar Free Jazz
5. Brother Ali - Self Taught
6. M.I.A. Featuring Afrikan Boy - Hussel
7. Led Zeppelin - In the Light
8. Strangely enough, Morphine - Candy, swear to god, came up randomly
9. Faith No More - Epic
10. Clutch - Texan Book of the Dead
