Friday Genius Ten “Fun Fun Fun!” Edition

With perfect time, Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin begins the weekend after the election.  This Genius list is in honor of that.  Leave yours—-or your random ten—-in comments.

Original song: “Crystal Cat”—-Dan Deacon

1) “Ghost Hardware”—-Burial
2) “Future”—-Cut Copy
3) “Hallelujah”—-The Happy Mondays
4) “Destroy Everything You Touch”—-Ladytron
5) “I Get Around”—-Dragonette
6) “TKO”—-Le Tigre
7) “Television Rules The Nation”—-Daft Punk
8) “Galang”—-M.I.A.
9) “Romeo”—-Basement Jaxx (this is one of my top 5 favorite dance songs, ever)
10) “New York, I Love You, But You’re Bringing Me Down”—-LCD Soundsystem

Instead of playing videos from the Genius list, I thought I’d play some stuff from bands that the Norbizness and I are going to check out.

Bad Brains:

Dead Milkmen:

Deerhoof:

Dr. Octagon:

Brownout!:

The Octopus Project:

You can check out the lineup here.  Because they have a system where there are double stages—-as soon as one band goes off one half, the other one goes on the other—-it’s both awesome (no waiting) and overwhelming (you really do have to make hard choices).

The Dead Milkmen are still around? Nice. They put on one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, in 1991 or 1992. Hope they’re as good now as they were then.

Comment #2: spence-bob  on  11/07  at  12:45 PM

I think I still have bruises from a Bad Brains show I caught in 1989. I also once helped the Dead Milkmen hunt down the scumbag producer who had booked them and then didn’t tell them the venue had gone out of business. They got their $250… in NICKELS. No wonder this town didn’t get decent shows for a long, long time. Huh, the Cro-mags as well, some of those bruises might be from their shows back in the day. Got in a fight with some OGS skinheads in Atlanta once outside a Cro-mags show. Mmmm. We fought very well that day. Outnumbered and outmuscled but the Clownskins fighting alongside us were crazy motherfuckers so we held our own.

Fun to be young and stupid edition.

Base song: “We Gotta Know” - The Cro-Mags

1. “She’s Calling You” - Bad Brains (how’s that for serendipity)
2. “Salad Days” - Minor Threat
3. “Amoeba” - The Adolescents (starting to look like the lineup for FFF)
4. “Knowledge” - Operation Ivy
5. “Bigmouth Strikes Again” - The Smiths (do what!?)
6. “Bloodstains” - Agent Orange
7. “Hell’s Bells” - AC/DC
8. “Baba O’Riley” - The Who (they’re baaaack)
9. “I just Want Some Skank” - The Circle Jerks
10. “Sex And Dying In High Society” - X

Bonus odd genius pick: “Come Together” - The Beatles

Dave Blood, their bassist, sadly committed suicide a couple of years ago. I’m glad to see they still get together from time to time. They are a undeservedly underrated band. It makes me smile every time someone references Stuart when some homophobic loon shows up in the comments.

5.  “America Is Waiting” - Brian Eno & David Byrne - Vocal
6.  “To Hell With Poverty (Go Home Productions remix)” - Gang Of Four - GHP Complete - CD12 Official Remixes Vol1

8.  “The Fat Lady Of Limbourg” - Brian Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy
9.  “Shot By Both Sides” - Magazine - Real Life
10.  “Down In The Park” - Gary Numan & Tubeway Army - Premier Hits

bonus final song at end of playlist:  “Pyjamarama” - Roxy Music - The Early Years

P.S.  The above was from my collection at work.  If Genius is much like Pandora my Random 10’s at their most homogeneous give me more spills & chills.  However, if this is going to be a Genius list from now on I won’t crash the party until I try it for myself.
