Friday Genius Ten “Hope For No Obstacles On The Home Stretch” Edition

Ten songs from your MP3 collection.  Leave ‘em in comments.  Either at random, or you can do what I’m doing, which is picking a song from my collection, hitting the Genius button, and seeing what I get.

Original song: “Get Off Your Ass And Jam” by Funkadelic.  Selected after listening to the recent Sound Opinions where they analyzed the development of Psychedelic Soul.

Ten songs:

1) “Just Kissed My Baby”—-The Meters
2) “A Funky Space Reincarnation”—-Marvin Gaye
3) “Freddie’s Dead”—-Curtis Mayfield
4) “I’m Coming Home”—-The Spinners
5) “Let My People Go”—-Darondo

“Super Stupid”:

Kitteh kisses:

It’s not all love all the time.  This morning, Molly jumped up on an ottoman next to Marc, and as he started petting her, Dusty jumped on the couch, bit Molly, shoved her out of the way, and assumed Molly’s spot in reach of pets.

I generated my first “Genius” playlist earlier this week (using a song of the recent Death Cab album), and here’s what popped up (1st 10 tracks only):
1. Your New Twin Sized Bed, Death Cab For Cutie
2. Sea Legs, The Shins
3. Campus, Vampire Weekend
4. Summersong, Decemberists
5. Energy, Apples in Stereo
6. White Winter Hymnal, Fleet Foxes
7. Casimir Pulaski Day, Sufjan Stevens
8. Until The Day Is done, R.E.M.
9. Right Moves, Josh Ritter
10. Science Vs. Romance, Rilo Kiley

I admit I got suckered in by Genius’ ease of use; I’m usually too lazy to bother making my own playlists and thus tend to listen to the same albums over and over, missing out on some of the nether reaches of the 13,000+ songs on my iPod.  But I’m also a bit disappointed by how rigid Genius appears to be.  I plugged in Death Cab, and, entirely predictably, got an assortment of what I suppose would be just-shy-of-mainstream college-radio-hipster rock of the past 3 years.  Why didn’t it find any older music in a similar vein—no Cure, no Joy Division for example?  One fix I’d recommend for the next iteration of Genius:  Allow a playlist to be generated from multiple songs.  If you plug in, say, a Pixies song and a Who song, maybe you get a list that includes a healthy assortment of both indie rock and classic rock, making for a somewhat less predictable playlist.  Just saying.

Did my normal iPod Random Ten at my own site, but decided to join in the Genius fun here.  Still trying to figure out the algorithms it uses to pick the songs.  This time, though, starting from a song on a soundtrack, it gave me a 25-song playlist of mostly songs from movies.  Here’s the first ten:

1.  “About Her” - Malcolm McLaren - Kill Bill, Vol. 2
2.  “I’m Not There (1956)” - Bob Dylan & The Band - A Tree With Roots
3.  “You Are My Sunshine” - Norman Blake - Rato’s Nostalgia Collection 26
4.  “Caravan” - Puccio Roelens - Phase Six Superstereo
5.  “Il Triello” - Ennio Morricone - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
6.  “Within You” - David Bowie - Magic Dance 12”
7.  “Teen Horniness Is Not A Crime” - Sarah Michelle Gellar, Abbey McBride & ClarKent - Southland Tales
8.  “Long Time Woman” - Pam Grier - Jackie Brown
9.  “Philadelphia” - Neil Young - Philadelphia
10.  “Come In Number 51, Your Time Is Up” - Pink Floyd - The Pop Side of The Floyd 1967-1972

And my bonus song is the last from the 25 on the Genius list:  “Time To Change” - The Brady Bunch - TV Characters Sing Just For You, Vol. 3

Odd.

I gotta show some love to the Genius lists.

My boyfriend, who has pretty decent taste in music, will remember something he likes, but won’t ever look for more. Which means that if he picks the music, I end up hearing that one list he made 2 years ago over and over again. But with a genius list, he only has to remember one song and then we get a whole new mix of songs each time.

I love you (he reads the site faithfully as well) but THANK YOU APPLE for the Genius list!

Also, most of my genius lists, no matter the original song, seem to include “Love Will Tear Us Apart” by Joy Division. My computer knows me so well!

Random list generated while reading “A Freewheelin’ Time” by Suze Rotolo:

6. “Beer Bottle Boogie” - Mitch Woods
7. “Six And Four” - Oscar Peterson
8. Stravinsky, Le Sacre du Printemps, Spring Round Dances - London Symphony

Bonus Tracks—Osvaldo Golijov, Inscriptions for String Quartet, II-I.B.S. (1904-1991) - St. Lawrence String Quartet
“Nobody’s Fault But My Own” - Beck

I have no idea what no. 1 is, or even if that is the true title or artist, but it’s great.  And let me urge everyone to bow down before Mabel Mercer!

Comment #17: Samantha Vimes  on  10/17  at  07:09 PM

I wanna play, I’m not really liking the genius thing too much, it works for some genres but too often it’s just the most popular things in my library like this:

seed: Give Me Back My Man - B-52’s
2. Bigmouth Strikes Again - The Smiths
3. Alison - Elvis Costello
4. London Calling - The Clash
5. Old Man - Neil Young
6. Son of a Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield
7. Mrs. Robinson - Simon & Garfunkel
8. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
9. Get Back - The Beatles
10. Island in the Sun - Weezer

That’s really a terrible mix. “Stairway to Heaven”? From “Give Me Back My Man”? Genius my ass.
