Friday Genius Ten “It’s Just Dandy” Edition

Wednesday night, we went to see one of those great bands you think that you’ll never get to see, but indeed they’re still together.  It was amazing, so they kick off the Friday Genius Ten.  Leave yours in comments.

Original song: “Horse Pills” by the Dandy Warhols

1) “The Body Says No”—-The New Pornographers
2) “Don’t Ask Me To Explain”—-Of Montreal
3) “Fake ID”—-The Go! Team
4) “Break My Body”—-The Pixies
5) “The First Vietnamese War”—-The Black Angels
6) “Drama Queen”—-Switches
7) “Soul Suckin’ Jerk”—-Beck
8) “Up On The Sun”—-The Meat Puppets
9) “Let The Cool Goddess Rust Away”—-Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah
10) “These Fangs”—-Say Hi To Your Mom

Videos and cat pics under the fold.

For days after we had my birthday party, Dusty pouted and didn’t come out much.  She finally forgave us.  Here’s a picture of her making it up to Marc.

My birthday present was a super-soft robe.  Thus, it was just a matter of time before a cat discovered it.  Molly was first.

I’m going to get a hook for it so that they don’t completely own it.

Love the Dandy Warhols. A little pissed that they’re re-releasing monkeyhouse as if it were a brand new album, but whatever. I didn’t get a chance to see them in Philly when they came through, so I’m very jealous.

I honestly feel that they generally keep getting better with every album (Beck’s been doing that too). Right around 13 Tales they really started to take off. For all of its weirdness, Odditorium has some amazing cuts, and I think that Earth to Dandy Warhols has a lot of staying power.

Too late—You Curl Up On It, You Own It.  It’s the Poke Rule for cats.

Love the Dandys too.  I was a little disappointed when I saw them live though—the “too cool for school” attitude didn’t serve them that well on the night I saw them.  I like a little more passion in my live bands, even ones where being blase is part of the act.

They were having a blast when I saw them.  They might have just had an off night when you saw them?

I’ve seen them a half-dozen times (back in THE DAY) and “too cool for school” is far more the default. Well, “too cool for school” and “topless.” You wouldn’t think those could go together, but somehow Zia managed it.

Well, they’re relatively upfront about their stance on it, no? I’m not saying calling it something different (i.e., what they planned to call it originally) won’t help them sell to some confused kids, but it’s not exactly unheard of for a band to release a “director’s cut” of an album that a label interfered with.

Comment #9: Auguste  on  09/11  at  01:07 PM

I don’t subscribe to their newsletter or anything, I just saw they had an album with a new name and yet all of the tracks were suspiciously familiar ...

Comment #10: Mighty Ponygirl  on  09/11  at  02:34 PM

So glad you’ve got the Meat Puppets on this week’s list. One of my favorites of…well, evah!  They ran into a rough patch there for a while, but Cris is back and they are touring again and I would highly advise anyone who missed them the first time around to go check out a show. One of the great live acts you will ever see. Curt Kirkwood is a fucking freaky genius on the geetar.

Comment #11: Hornet  on  09/11  at  02:46 PM

They’re fun, for sure.  It’s almost physically impossible to live in Austin and never see the Meat Puppets.
