Friday Genius Ten “Music Is Always Past And Forward Looking” Edition

After all this depressing shit, I think we should liven it up with the best bubblegum song of all time for the Genius 10.  Leave yours in comments.

Original song: “ABC” by the Jackson 5

1) “Please Please Please”—-James Brown
2) “Do Me, Baby”—-Prince
3) “Every Little Bit Hurts”—-Brenda Holloway
4) “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man”—-Aretha Franklin
5) “You Are Everything”—-The Stylistics
6) “Stubborn Kind Of Fellow”—-Marvin Gaye
7) “I Heard It Through The Grapevine”—-Gladys Knight and the Pips
8) “These Arms Of Mine”—-Otis Redding
9) “Groove Me”—-King Floyd
10) “Ribbon In The Sky”—-Stevie Wonder

Onto the now.  This past week, a couple of highly anticipated (by me) albums came out, and I’m here to report that they are well worth investing in.  Examinations below the fold.
The first album is The Gossip’s highly anticipated new release Music For Men.  Gotta love the ironic title—-The Gossip has only gotten deeper into their disco/New Wave influences, music which is most certainly not the music that comes to mind when you think of stereotypical man music.  As discussed earlier on the blog, the loathing that standard issue white bred American men had for disco led to one of the most baffling historical freak outs over a pop music trend in the Disco Sucks movement.  On this album, The Gossip takes their fascination with death disco and New Wave to its logical conclusion, adding sequencers, synthesizers, and even a piano to their two-piece-plus-a-disco-diva-voice sound.  Guitarist Bruce Paine and drummer Hannah Billie don’t give up on their remarkable, innovative ability to replicate layered New Wave and disco sounds with just two instruments, though.  The extra instruments just add color, and it was a wise choice, because they may have hit the bottom of what they could do with a completely stripped down set.

They’re still not big in the U.S., but believe me, they were everywhere in Europe.  It’s fascinating.  The official video isn’t embeddable, but here’s an alternate version:

The other album I’m stoked about is the Phenomenal Hand Clap Band.  Saw them by luck at South By Southwest, and was completely fucking blown away and eagerly awaiting their album, which came out Tuesday, and I’ve burned a digital iPod hole in.  They’re a supergroup that’s been put together by underground DJs Daniel Collás and Sean Marquand, and it has members from Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, TV on the Radio, L’Trimm, Calla, Mooney Suzuki, Oakley Hall, Antibalas, the Dap Kings, Diamond Nights, Persephone’s Bees, Si*Sé, and Apollo Heights.  They’re basically updating a very late 60s/early 70s rock/funk sound, leaning heavily on Sly and the Family Stone, but also updating it with some small hip hop elements and synthesizers.  Very funky fun and cool.

Here’s them playing at Home Slice Pizza in Austin:

And in New York:

Seriously, I’m so into these albums, it’s ridiculous.  You can download both at Amazon.com for cheap, so I recommend doing that.

Okay, here’s some Michael Jackson gossip: I knew an artist who worked on a Michael Jackson project for Disneyland in the ‘90s, and so was working closely on, well, closeups of his face.

Which needed to be the equivalent of airbrushed, according to her, a wreck even then, with the nose collapsing in places from too much plastic surgery.

On another note: ever since Jackson paid for the birth of his “children” (none of the three biologically related to him, by the by, but the result of sperm donors, according to gossip) I’ve been dreading the day they became old enough to write tell-all biographies, with more of the horrific details of Jackson’s parenting skills beyond balcony dangling and veil wearing. Tell-all biographies that would also blame the general public for not having rescued those children from Jackson.

At least now those children will be passed on to the tender mercies of Jackson’s crazy family, or the mother who sold them away at birth. Sigh.

Would what be the equivalent of “NO WIRE HANGERS!” from a Michael Jackson/Daddy Dearest?

There is, of course, “that’s ignorant” from the South Park take on it.

I realize my Michael Jackson stuff belongs in the thread of the previous story, but I didn’t have the time to log on yesterday.

As for the curse of child stars: in the ‘90s I also interviewed for print one of the adult stars of a sit com that prominently featured children, a couple who had starred in it since they were literally babies.

The adult actor had become very close to all the kids (in a good, not Michael Jackson way) trips to Disneyland with his family and theirs, etc.

However, to the question I posed, whether or not he’d promote his own children as actors, he was vehement in his opposition: saying that he wouldn’t subject them to the childhood of the littlest actors on this show.

He was so vehement I left the quote out of the piece—I knew that actor personally and also knew he’d be thrown off the show by the producer if it hit print, ruining his career at the point when it had finally taken off.

Later, when I left the soundstage for that show, it happened to be just behind one of the child stars to whom I’d been introduced.

After a couple paces, it became apparent she was afraid she was being stalked, so I asked her for directions to the exit of the lot, which happened to be in the opposite direction.

At the age of twelve or so, she had to be aware of possible stalkers, imagine that for your childhood. I’m not up on the tabloids, so I don’t know if her adult life has been blighted by child stardom, but several of the other children on that show have fed the rumor mills since.

On the other hand, I also knew Leonardo DiCaprio’s father, who had an established reputation as a great guy (and old hippie) and remember being introduced to the cute, blond bowlcut ten year old Leo, saying that Leo was really enjoying his acting classes (Leo’s own idea, apparently) and was starting to do commercials and get parts.

Leonardo’s father managed his career, in a good way, steering Leo to independent films in order to build that career, and according to friends, still manages Leo’s career, a sign they’re still friends.

But of course Leonardo DiCaprio was a child actor, and not a child star, started relatively late (at 10) and apparently chose that career himself, rather than being pushed into it by his parents, neither of whom were crazy, abusive fucks.

No. More. Tap. Water.  ?

Dipping into the thread of the previous Michael Jackson story, reminds me that I have another child star story.

Back in the ‘90s when the Coreys were kings, I was at some Hollywood industry party or other around midnight and suprised to find one of the Coreys there (the one with the bigger head?) hanging out with adult women and apparently having access to the open bar.

Right then and there it was easy to predict that train wreck.

At the age of twelve or so, she had to be aware of possible stalkers, imagine that for your childhood.

This happens for people other than child stars.  Many children begin dealing with adult situations at a young age.  Earlier this year, I read the story of a woman that developed large breasts at the age of 11.  Suddenly, grown men were telling her their fantasies of raping her.  That isn’t much of a childhood either.

Yeah, well, I was dealing with adult men coming on to me when I was 12, too—when I looked like I was even younger.

I knew those were some screwed up men because I looked like such a child, and it was frightening—however, a child star has the added level of having to be afraid of everyone, including women, young and old, because stalkers can come in any package.

ever since Jackson paid for the birth of his “children” (none of the three biologically related to him, by the by, but the result of sperm donors, according to gossip)

Michael Jackson’s parenting skills and unconventional family building methods aside, putting “children” in quotes here because they are not biologically related to their legal parent is really rude when considering that there are thousands of children in families that use third party reproduction or adoption who are loving, caring, normal and devoted families.

It is like when you hear about how Tom Cruise has one “real” child, and footnotes and separates the fact that he is the parent of two other children (through adoption.)

Comment #14: Lexie  on  06/26  at  02:50 PM

the result of sperm donors, according to gossip

It’s not too hard to guess that.  Genes that determine skin color can give unexpected results, but his children are not the biological offspring of this man.

Comment #15: keshmeshi  on  06/26  at  03:28 PM

Sorry, the quotes were meant for “his” children, rather than the children themselves.

And yes, we’re all aware of adoption, sperm donors, foster children and so on and so forth, and the legitimacy of those created families.

But it’s another bit of oddity that Jackson would, apparently, choose white sperm donors for “his” children.

Comment #16: judybrowni  on  06/26  at  03:51 PM

According to this report, Jackson was getting daily Demerol shots, including one on the day he died, perhaps shortly before he died.

And Jackson in-house doctor (now THAT was a job!) has apparently high-tailed it out, leaving his car behind, for some reason.

Delurking briefly for the following Public Service Announcement (w/apologies for the OT, but for some ppl this might be important):

Just heard that it’s possible that Michael Jackson’s untimely death was associated with, or caused by, a problem w/narcotic painkillers.  Specifically, I’ve read that there’s a theory that an injection of demerol shortly before his passing might have been the proximate cause.

If so, not only was this a premature and tragic loss, it was *utterly preventable*.

There has been, for over 6 years in the US (and longer than that in Europe) a *highly* successful protocol for managing and radically reducing the harm of (often w/ 0 relapses even long-term) addictions to opiates/opioids (ie, heroin, morphine, oxycontin, percocet, percodan, demerol, vicodin, dilaudid, etcetc).

The mechanism is the prescription-drug Suboxone, which is a maintenance drug analogous to methadone, but w/certain technical benefits that permit much greater (like order-of-magnitude) success rates.

For reasons I can’t fathom, suboxone is far better known, and in much greater use, in the northeast and on the east coast in general, than elsewhere.

Because of the efficacy of this treatment, there is literally almost no reason that anyone in the US should *ever* die from an overdose of, or from other problems caused by or related to addiction to, opiates.

Pls trust me that I know whereof I speak on this issue.  (Not-quite-full disclosure:  I am not affiliated with, nor compensated in any way by, any person or entity involved in or profiting from the manufacture, use, etcetc, of suboxone.  I am in no way a shill for anyone/anything.  My involvement is in another form, which should be obvious from my reticence to discuss it in any more detail.)

If you, or anyone you know, has an addiction problem, *please* check up on (or have them investigate) this program.

Thank u for yr patience.  End of PSA; we now return you to your regular blog thread already in progress.

I have to say, actually, that the Jackson 5 video gives me the chills (and not in a good way). Whatever the real story is on Michael Jackson later in life, that video is, to me, a painful example of a childhood interrupted.
