Friday Genius Ten “Music Missed!” Edition

There were a number of bands I had interest in that I didn’t see at South by Southwest, just because I ran out of time.  But one band I did make the time for, and sadly they weren’t able to come.  So I’m building my Genius Ten around them, because their music is really addictive.  Leave yours—-or comments about whatever you like—-in comments.  Open thread!

Original song: “Those Dancing Days” by Those Dancing Days

Hopefully, this will be an excellent antidote to the story about Ben Weasel punching two women in the face at the festival. Christ, what an asshole.

1) “Friday Night At The Drive-In” by Jens Lekman
2) “Watch The Tapes” by LCD Soundsystem
3) “The Wrath of Marcie” by Go! Team
4) “Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me” by The Pipettes
5) “Rat Is Dead” by CSS
6) “Small Town Girl” by Good Shoes
7) “+81” by Deerhoof
8) “Weekend Without Makeup” by The Long Blondes
9) “Tonight I Have To Leave It” by The Shout Out Louds
10) “Lost” by The Mary Onettes

Videos below the fold, all from some of my favorite acts at SXSW.

After reading about the Weasel incident at Feministing, it sounds like there were two assholes involved.  If I have a beef with an artist, the place to air it is not at a show.  That’s just rude.  No matter what she wanted to say to him, the medium of ice and spit isn’t appropriate.  Even if he is a misogynistic asshole, that’s rude.

If I go to a Mel Gibson movie and complain about him during the movie, other moviegoers will likely punch me in the face.  Punk rock shows in small clubs are certainly not the same as movie theaters, but the principle is the same: the right to enjoy the show of rest of the audience is more important than yours is.

Yeah, he’s an asshole of the highest caliber.  But so is she.  I’m glad his band quit him.  I’m hoping there will be some legal problems in his future.  But the ice-throwing and spitting woman is an asshole.  And if she was a man, it’s likely that more than one guy would have punched her.  Which also wouldn’t make it okay in any way.  But it’s probably true.

The only concert I missed that still makes me upset is the Beatles Reunion Concert of 1977.  I really kick myself for missing that one.  The Fab Four together one last time, and I missed it.  Agghhh!

On a more serious note, I really am disappointed that I never got to see Stevie Ray Vaughn before his tragic passing.  Very unfortunate for all of us who never got a chance to see a true master of the Stratocaster at work, live, doing what he liked best.  Next to vintage Hendrix, that’s about as good as it gets.

I wasn’t old enough to see Hendrix, I’ve seen Clapton, B.B. King, and other great contemporary Blues artists, but I missed out on seeing SRV…

I guess the best I can hope for is Jimi Hendrix’s words, channeled through SRV’s voice and hands:

“If I don’t meet you no more in this world then uh
I’ll meet ya on the next one
And don’t be late
Don’t be late”

Mike Ess, I was lucky enough to see SRV in about 1983 or ‘84, before he was STEVIE RAY VAUGHN.  (Well, he probably already was in Austin, but this was in Florida.) Didn’t know much about him beforehand, left a huge fan.  It was his (no vocals) cover of Hendrix’s “Little Wing” that really stunned me.

Sorry for the thread hijack, y’all.

Did anybody see Dum Dum Girls?  (Seriously!  I love them!!)

I missed the last concert by the Jam, in Brighton, on December 9, 1982—my qualifying exams were scheduled for the very next morning up in Scotland.

The Those Dancing Days song I seem to listen to most is Hitten.  It’s so addicting and it has this timeless feel to it.  Their new album is pretty good too, Fuckarias is fun and full of great drumming.
