Friday Genius Ten “Safari’s Good Enough….For Your Mom” Edition

Holy shit, my Firefox browser is all fucked up and I don’t know why.  I tried to open it and got an error message I couldn’t even read because—-ha ha!—-it’s offscreen and you can’t drag it over.  If you press “continue” the browser opens, but won’t pull up my homepage (Calendar), and you have no “File” “Edit” or anything in that toolbar at all.  And you know what I don’t have time for?  Figuring this out.  Shitshitshitshitshit.

Anyway, our panel for South By Southwest is Sunday at 10AM, and it’s called “That’s Not My Name: Beating Down Online Misogyny”.

God, you know what sucks? Safari.  It sucks like a $1,000 vacuum cleaner.

Sorry, back to the point.  Come to our panel!  Don’t take your Firefox for granted!  Our panel will be awesome!  It’s me, Samhita and Ann from Feministing, and Cecily Walker!  It’s named after a fucking awesome Ting Tings song, which will be the original song for your Genius mix.  Down with Safari!  Leave your random ten or Genius ten in comments. Firefox forever!!1!!!!1!!11!1!11!!!!!!

“That’s Not My Name”—-The Ting Tings

1) “Ready For The Floor”—-Hot Chip
2) “Relax, Take It Easy”—-Mika
3) “Valerie”—-Mark Ronson, featuring Amy Winehouse (On one of the few occasions where I like her and don’t think she’s the most overrated piece of trash out there.  But sometimes I think that Mark Ronson could take someone clearing their throat and turn it into a shiny retro-sounding pop hit.)
4) “Standing In The Way Of Control”—-The Gossip (In a just world, the Gossip would have Amy Winehouse’s Grammies. As far as I know, Mark Ronson has not exploited Beth Ditto’s talents. This is wrong.)
5) “Flux”—-Bloc Party
6) “Chelsea Dagger”—-The Fratellis
7) “Dirty Harry”—-The Gorillaz
8) “Munich”—-The Editors
9) “Kids”—-MGMT
10) “Bohemian Like You”—-The Dandy Warhols

Videos under the fold.  I’ll try not to rant. Also, this afternoon, I have a South By Southwest Survival Guide for those who descending on the city for the Interactive/Film/Music festival.  If you’re staying for one, two, or all three, I hope as an Austin resident and a longtime SXSW attendee, I can help.

Mika:

Instead of “Valerie”, here’s Lily Allen and Mark Ronson singing a cover of “Oh My God” that is, in my opinion, as fun as the Ting Tings.

MGMT:

Okay, there’s your dance party.  If you’re coming to SXSW Interactive, come to our panel!

I don’t know what kind of system you have, but on my iBook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11, Firefox is a dog.  It’s a real resource hog and hangs my computer pretty regularly.  I agree that Safari isn’t a great substitute (though you may want to have a look at the Safari 4 beta that’s out now).  I use Camino; it’s like a Firefox-lite written specifically for Mac OS X by the same folks who produce Firefox.  It doesn’t have all of the functionality that Firefox has, and some sites don’t work well with it, but I find that to be a minor inconvenience in light of the fact that it performs overall much better than does Firefox.

Original Genius song:  “Golden Brown”, The Stranglers

1.  “Fade To Grey”, Visage
2.  “The Love Cats”, The Cure
3.  “Town Called Malice”, The Jam
4.  “Waterloo Sunset”, The Kinks
5.  “It’s Not Over Yet”, The Klaxons
6.  “It’s My Life”, Talk Talk
7.  “There She Goes”, The La’s
8.  “The Look Of Love”, ABC
9.  “Ashes To Ashes”, David Bowie
10.  “Girls On Film”, Duran Duran

I don’t know if there’s a Mac version, but Opera is a good browser to have loaded and ready as an alternate/backup to Firefox.

I’ve never understood everyones love for Firefox. I have only ever had a Firefox that crashes and freaks out. On my work and home computers.

I even had to use Internet Explorer for a while. That was terrible.

Comment #5: SuperD  on  03/13  at  01:03 PM

Try downloading Camino.  It’s the version of Firefox that’s built specifically for a mac OS.  (I’m assuming you have a mac?)  I was having crazy problems with Firefox as well—really slow load times, weirdness when I downloaded or opened pdfs and word files, so I installed Camino about two weeks ago and everything’s going fine.

Google Chrome was whizbang fast on my ancient machine…until it decided that instead of switching to a tab when I clicked on it, it would close the tab.

Uh…I live for a jillion open tabs.  I need to be able to read and then GO BACK TO MY ORIGINAL PAGE.

Ugh.

Listening to Juliana Hatfield Trio and Ivy’s Apartment Life.

I’ve been using Google’s Chrome browser for a while, and have been pretty happy with it. Unsurprisingly, Microsoft sites don’t really work well in Chrome (Hotmail, for one, is completely unworkable), but I’m okay with that. It doesn’t have a lot of the bells and whistles of other browsers, but it’s pretty reliable (I think it’s crashed on me maybe twice in 3+ months of daily use), and it’s got the best tabbing of any of the browsers, to my mind. My US$ 0.02, fwiw.

Anyway: my list, because it’s all I do over at my barren place.

I used to be an Opera user, but I was sick of all the websites that Opera couldn’t load. So I use Firefox now. Amanda, if you have Expose configured in your System Preferences, have you tried using the command to bring up all of your windows when you get the error so that you can select it (or at least read it)?

Good luck with you SXSW panel! I wish I could be there, it sounds like a great discussion. Is it going to be webcast anywhere?

Comment #9: Mighty Ponygirl  on  03/13  at  01:09 PM

Yeah, I had the same issue with Opera; I liked its performance, but it had too many problems with too many sites.  Camino’s my main browser with Safari as my backup.

Comment #10: Linnaeus  on  03/13  at  01:15 PM

Try SeaMonkey, it runs faster than Firefox does on PCs, I’m sure the MAC version would work as wTell.

I just downloaded the Mac OS update and I had the same problem you’re describing. I went into system preferences—> Expose & Spaces—> Spaces and I unclicked or DISabled spaces. No more probs.

Firefox runs fine for me, always.  But I am a mistrustful sort, so I always have another browser on the desktop that I can use if something goes wrong.  Really.  Keep two, just in case.  Or maybe three.  Belt, suspenders, duct tape.

Comment #19: Older  on  03/13  at  10:23 PM

Maybe it’s my early exposure to Filk music, but I’m not an Insufferable Music Snob so much as a Musical Anarchist. I like stuff so far out there it can’t even be described as Indie. Last Friday I told y’all about the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain (on Youtube), this week I discovered a guy who goes by Kutiman. He uses a most unusual instrument to make really good music.

It’s called Youtube.

He takes clips of folks videoing themselves playing music, or giving lessons on how to play instruments, and others of people singing and layers it all together. People doing drums, others doing keyboards, guitars, brass, and weirdass stuff (one of his 7 tracks ends with a brief bit of an air-raid siren, another had a bit of a talking doll). The videos are cut together of the visuals from the source videos (which are all listed on the sidebar).

This is #1, “The Mother of all Funk Chords”. From this one you can see the rest in the ‘related’ bar.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzZi-btc8AA

There’s an 8th one that shows the creator, Kutiman and shows how he did them.

Firefox just has a tendency to be a nasty memory suck on my machine if I have it open for a long time. Annoying, but I’ve gotten used to it sadly. raspberry
