Friday Genius Ten “Vote Early” Edition

Seriously, if you can, vote early.  Even if there’s a line. It’s only going to get worse from here on out, because rest assured that if you’re the sort of person that a) reads this blog and b) just so happens to live in a district where voting machines just so happen to be scarce, the longer you wait, the more likely you will disenfranchised just by having no time to take off work to vote.  More information here.

Leave a random 10 list in comments or leave your Genius mix.  I’m doing Genius.

I early voted on Monday, the first day it was allowed here in TX.  My boyfriend and I raced from home to the polls and were second to last in line.

It was very well worth it to get to go down the list and wish for the sound trouncing of each and every “R” on the list (even if all except one of them will win).

Now it’s just a matter of seeing about my parents.  My father is leaning Obama He can’t stand McCain and likes Obama and, despite a lifetime of being a conservative Republican, is so disgusted with the whole situation that he’s taken a drastic economic leftward swing (while seeing the logic of social left issues as well, he is a Christian, and still struggles with that, I think).  I think he will vote for Obama, and I don’t want to ask because I don’t want to get that far up in his kool-aid.  My mom has swung leftward economically as well, but is, essentially, a single-issue voter, and that issue is abortion.  I think that, had she seen the last debate, she just might have been able to vote for Obama, but I don’t think she was ready for that kind of change yet.  I don’t think she’ll be convinced in time, and I don’t like pushing people.

Everyone else I know is pretty much voting for Obama, except for my helplessly Republican friends who still believe everything they were taught as kids (I am in my mid-twenties).  It’s exciting.  The line was so long to early-vote, and it looked like a pretty mixed demographic.

I think this will be an election to remember.

Comment #2: INTPagan  on  10/24  at  10:37 AM

INT, if you feel comfortable, I’d ask your mom a simple question: Would you rather see abortion illegal but being performed at the same or higher rates or would you like to see abortion rates go down?  Those are her only two real world choices.  If she says the latter, then show her this article about which candidate is pro-contraception, and which is openly hostile.  The demand for abortion is what drives the rate, and since 50% of abortions trace back to women not using contraception, making access and use easier alone will reduce the abortion rate.

Comment #4: Sarcastro  on  10/24  at  11:07 AM

See, I’ve done that, but she also still wants to believe that contraception causes abortions as well.  I also think that she would rather take a full ideological stand then a realistic one she views as incomplete (i.e. the “making murder legal in order to reduce the murder rate” straw man).  While she would like to reduce abortions, she is enough of an idealist in that area to have difficulty understanding that sometimes you have to compromise some to come to a good end.  It has a similar end to any discussion of Israel with my mom (“But they’re GOD’S CHOSEN PEOPLE and that land belongs to THEM and they can kill WHOMEVER THEY LIKE to claim their land!  The Palestinians never belonged there ANYWAY so why are they so MAD?!”).  (Actually, she’s a two-issue voter, to be precise, and Obama would be better for Israel - maybe I could pull that card.  Better than trying to haggle out with her the whole scenario that other people do NOT accept the Bible as the infallible word of God, and so are not so willing to give in.  I think the whole thing is tragic, personally, for both sides.)

It kills me.  I know that when most people say, “Well, I just don’t trust either of them,” they’re really saying, “I hate McCain, but Obama’s black.”  When my mom says it, she’s really saying, “I hate McCain, but Obama’s pro-choice..”

Interesting -  I would have never thought that someone would say, “I know, let’s have Dennis Hopper pretend to be a music producer.  And while we’re at it, let’s also get . . I don’t know . . Dean Stockwell?”

Hopper is a colostomy bag still loved for Easy Rider.  I’ve loved Stockwell ever since Quantum Leap, and he’s delish on Galactica.

No random list - my device’s full of podcasting crap.

Comment #9: idiosynchronic  on  10/24  at  12:07 PM

I turned in my absentee ballot a little while ago. It was actually a little odd, since the envelope cost more than regular postage. I really hope people don’t get their votes discounted simply because they didn’t tack on enough 1c stamps. Anyway, on to the Ten.

Genius list based on: These Days - Joy Division

1. Version City - The Clash
2. The Noise of the Carpet - Stereolab
3. Youth Against Fascism - Sonic Youth
4. Speed of Life - David Bowie

idio: Stockwell surely shows Hopper how it’s done.  If only he’d learn.  Dean’s a genius.

I voted early on Monday as well, and also in Texas, so it’s not going to count anyway. The number of McCain supporters I’ve met here is maddening. I miss California.

Comment #20: junk science  on  10/24  at  04:31 PM

Yeah, that was one thing.  See, we had a pretty mixed racial and age demographic (although there were surprisingly few Hispanic people there).

There was one lady who came in wearing her JESUS SAVES! shirt, complete with McCain-Palin pin (which is against the rules), but she was late anyway.

We brought our two-year-old to the place, and the elderly couple behind us was making smiling remarks with us, carefully nonpartisan and all, and then they asked her if she was going to vote, and the gentleman said, “Well, up North, she probably could!”  They enjoyed a hearty laugh while we both rolled our eyes at the ACORN reference.  It was very irritating - like, oh, we’re all white folks, right?  So it’s safe to assume!

::sighs and pinches bridge of nose::

Comment #21: INTPagan  on  10/24  at  04:35 PM

PS: I took a picture of my daughter with the “I Voted!” sticker on her shirt, and I’m posting it to my Facebook with the caption “ACORN strikes again!”
