Friday Music Ten “LADIES” Edition

For some reason, the Genius function on my iTunes is suddenly not working, or not working much.  Songs and bands it used to work on don’t work any more.  I don’t know what to do about this.  I was going to do a Genius Ten for the Dum Dum Girls, but instead I’ll just put up some videos by them and a couple of other people (LADIES) with new stuff out that you might like.

Dum Dum Girls is older, but still awesome:

Men, who also have a show this week in New York, next Wednesday.

The Vivian Girls don’t have a new album out, but both the bassist has a new band called La Sera.

Opening for the Dum Dum Girls:

Cat pics below the fold.
The cats really enjoy the new apartment, in part because it has a lot sunlight in the mornings, and they bask in it. I got a shot of a double decker basking.

But they also love our new bedroom, which is basically a cubbyhole off to the side of a large sitting room.  We call it the bed cave, since it fits our bed and nothing else.  For cats, this is perfect, since cats love the feeling of being in enclosed spaces where they can sleep without anyone sneaking up on them.  Molly took it to the next level by wedging herself into a couple of pillows.

Bedcave!  I like.

Comment #2: oldfeminist  on  03/04  at  11:10 AM

Our first apartment had a bedcave: it could fit a double bed, a small nightstand on one side only, and had a couple of feet free at the foot of the bed.  But it had two doors (one to te living room and one to the bathroom, and, strangest of all, a transom window that opened into the apartment building hallway.  Maybe that was required by code at the time the building was erected (probably late 1930s/early 1940s).

There’s no room even for a nightstand in this bedcave.  What we did was install some IKEA shelves over the bed that are just big enough to hold a stack of books and magazines, and install a double lamp in the wall for a reading light.  You have to climb in from the foot of the bed.  We kind of thought of elevating the bed to create storage, but turns out we have enough storage.

I kind of love the New York apartment creative solutions mentality.

Our bedroom has a nook like that, so we have our bed in it.  Gives us enough space to have a solid 10x10 open area in the bedroom.  The cats love it because it puts our bed at window level…

“You don’t have enough songs that match (Decemberists, Dum Dum Girls ...)”

Yeah, it sucks lately.  I had trouble with the DumDumGirls, despite having an iPod full of reverb.  When it didn’t recognize any songs off the latest Decemberists, including the Peter Buck Guitar Like REM ones, I gave up.

I can sort of understand The Break not getting matched - aka OilyFemmes play Surf Music not yet released outside Australia - except for the Link Wray, Dick Dale, Ventures and Shadowy Men collections that are very much in the same vein ...

I think it had an anueurism - then again, it hasn’t matched Nirvana to much lately, either.

u probably need to update iTunes, mine doesn’t access the iStore at all because I’m not willing to install a bloated app on my primitive but functional G4.

Comment #7: The Pale Scot  on  03/04  at  12:21 PM

@#7: This happened to my “Genius” function AFTER I updated iTunes.  Something lobotomized it.

Comment #8: Ms Kate  on  03/04  at  12:22 PM

Try repair permissions (but this will eliminate ur playlists) or deleting the preference file if u got a mac, ; windoze, I can’t remember,

Comment #9: The Pale Scot  on  03/04  at  12:39 PM

sorry “deleting the preference file’ will eliminate ur playlists, i wrote backwards, or go the Craigslist Apple forum, they’re pretty good whether it’s mac or doze.

Starting Song: “Just Like Honey”—Jesus and Mary Chain

(Innocent little me: I didn’t really realize what this song is about until I was listening to it this morning….)

My Genius feature has never worked properly, so this is actually random:

1. “Shrug”—Ani DiFranco
2. “Lotus”—R.E.M.
3. “A Look To My Heart”—Blood Sweat & Tears
4. “Before This Time”—Ollabelle
5. “Have a Cigar”—Pink Floyd
6. “Prince of Darkness”—Indigo Girls
7. “Star Bodies”—The New Pornographers
8. “Snakes and Martyrs”—TV on the Radio
9. “Lagrimas Negras”—Bebo y Cigala
10. “Underneath the Bunker”—R.E.M.

I thought genius only recommended music you don’t already have, so if you have a lot, you don’t get much more?

Comment #12: James  on  03/04  at  01:57 PM

I’ve always liked the sitting room/bedroom design.  You have a small bedroom, exclusive for sleeping, and a separate sitting room which is one’s personal space.  OK, so it is a little Victorian… wink  Yes, I’d probably have bookcases covering the walls of my sitting room, too.

When I bought my first house, I did something like that.  Instead of using the master bedroom, the two smaller bedrooms had a connecting door, so I set up one as the bedroom and the other as the sitting room.

That new Dum Dum Girls ep is awesome. They do a lot of great covers on their singles, and this one comes with their version of the Smiths There Is a Light that Never Goes Out. I think Sub Pop still has some copies of their Blissed Out tape, which includes excellent versions of Black Tambourine’s Throw Aggi Off the Bridge and Delta 5’s Mind Your Own Business.

Other LADIES bands (or at least lead by):
The Black Tambourines (original Throw Aggi… )

Super Wild Horses (video for Golden Town). Another Australian gem of live-wire post punk infected with a heavy strain of souped up 60’s style garage primitivism (see also: Eddie Current Suppression Ring, who produced Super Wild Horse’s album).

SWH are on Hozac, as are The Flips (video for I Just Don’t Know Where I Stand), another sweet slice of 60’s garage pop.

One of The Flips used to be in The Tears, the best high-school garage punk band from Wisconsin. (Both the boys and girls sing).

Then there’s Schatzi & Hazeltine, who only ever put out one single, but it’s a total blast and clearly worships at the feet of Ronnie Spector.

I would also recommend Best Friends Forever who are having more fun than anyone else on the planet and are your new favorite band.

Oh! Oh! Oh! I can’t forget Veronica Falls, who are the perfect accompaniment to The Dum Dum Girls and The Black Tambourines.

Then there’s the Midnite Snaxx who have a single out on Raw Deluxe records.

Chin Chin, a Swedish new-wave/post punk group have recently been rediscovered and had their lone album re-released on vinyl.

And finally, Sexy Kids, on Slumberland records.

For cats, this is perfect, since cats love the feeling of being in enclosed spaces where they can sleep without anyone sneaking up on them.

Ahh. This explains why our cats like to sleep in the catchall basket under the TV. I thought they just liked sitting there believing we sat on the couch for an hour or so just to stare at them.

Ooo, I love the La Sera video.  I wish it was a full-length movie (if you like that sort of thing, you should check out the 2010 Asian slasher, Dream Home).

Thanks for the Dum Dum Girls.

Got one for you, Ms. Marcotte, even older.

And by “even older” I mean 1995. I mean Cub. Vancouver. Mint Records. Where Neko Case came from. If you’ve never heard this, you should.

If it isn’t Cub, it isn’t cuddlepop.
