Friday Prom Post “It Is My Revolution That I Dance To” Edition

Fun StuffMusic

One reason I’m glad the election is over is that it means I can spend more time thinking about and promoting our Radical 80s Prom on December 3rd at the Bowery Poetry Club.  Marc made this ad for it that mocks Wham a little, and I have to say I find it quite funny:

If you want to come, I’d be so grateful if you RSVP on Facebook.

It’s $12 at the door, and runs from 10PM-2AM.  It’s going to be a mix of 80s music, with an hour of 80s mash-ups.  There will be a contest for who has the best outfits, for those who like to dress up, with prizes being donated by BabelandJill Filipovic, Deanna Zandt, and Twanna Hines will be our judges, as they all look fabulous all the time. The whole thing is for a good cause, to support Women, Action & the Media, a group that supports progressive women in the media through training, advice, networking, and professional seminars, all in an effort to get more progressive female voices out in a world where men own most of the platform.

That, and I can tell you from experience that feminist dance parties are off the hook.

With that in mind, I thought I’d spend the weeks moving up towards it changing the Friday threads a little to highlight songs I’m planning on playing, to give you a taste of why this is going to be awesome.  For one thing, we’re trying to remember the ladies more than most DJs do. Also, a foray into fashion.

“Last Night A DJ Saved My Life” by Indeep

More below the fold.
“Burning Up” by Madonna

“The Cars That Go Boom” by L’Trimm

On Facebook, Lindsay Beyerstein has been digging through eBay for 80s clothes inspiration.  An excellent recent find:

Another:

Stealing her idea, I grabbed a few more inspirational looks off eBay:

For men, I recommend the Member’s Only jacket for a classic look:

Though I will add it works better with red leather pants.

I was also fond of this:

And you can’t go wrong with the classics:

John Hughes movies are highly recommended as a source of inspiration. I’m not going to tell you what I’ve got to wear, because I want it to be a surprise, but I promise you.  The words “over the top” were invented for the dress I found.

Holy crap, I’m actually going to be in NYC that night!

I do not have 80’s wear, and even then I don’t know that I could pull off the look, though… especially as I’d be coming from a client meeting. I’ll poke around and see if I can come up with anything.

You just gave me a flashback to my years of Aqua Net abuse. And crimping. I don’t know if I can go, but thanks for the videos!

You should come regardless.  I’m sure a “Frankie Says Relax” T-shirt can be tossed on right before coming out.  That would be awesome.

Comment #3: Amanda Marcotte  on  11/05  at  11:25 AM

I want to get a “Big Fun” T-shirt and go as Martha Dumptruck. :p

I’m going to come, and I got my friend to agree to come with me.  We’re both 42 and have been best friends since we were 11, so we lived through the 80’s together.  But we both have no idea what we’re going to wear because of course, those clothes are long gone.  Boy, talk about over the top though.  And we’ve got the pics to prove it.

I am definitely buying a big fat can of aqua net and teasing up my hair though!

Nice.  I haven’t even considered the hair aspect, but you totally have to do that, right?  Scarrrrrry…...  I will sit and meditate on this.

Comment #6: Amanda Marcotte  on  11/05  at  11:56 AM

Amanda, or you have to wear a big huge Madonna bow in your hair, definitely one or the other.

Comment #7: JennyLI  on  11/05  at  12:43 PM

Wow, that Adidas shirt . . . wow.

So I was looking for this yesterday with little luck on finding a well reviewed one, but can someone recommend a really good history book of rock/pop music from 1950-present?  I’m interested in both the socio-historical aspects as well as an in depth discussion of the music itself, what made it different and interesting, etc.  I’d take anything on the time frame front, but find myself really stupid about the 1968-1988 timeframe as rock got edgier and how new wave, punk, etc. grew out of that.  Any help would be much appreciated, and I figured the music people here would be my best bet to ask.

That’s a great mashup in the commercial.  Will it become available online?

Don’t forget to play the “Cars That Go Boom” vs. “Cars” (Gary Numan) mashup—it’s the bomb!!

Mighty Ponygirl - You aren’t wearing a blazer with huge padded shoulders to the client meeting?  They do cut an impressive figure.

Comment #12: Ron O.  on  11/05  at  02:48 PM

Maybe after the prom, NY.  We’re kicking around ideas on how to work that.

Comment #13: Amanda Marcotte  on  11/05  at  02:50 PM

Would love to go to this, but it’s on the other side of the country from me.  I’ll wear my checkered Vans that day.

Comment #14: Linnaeus  on  11/05  at  03:59 PM

Dem partisan:

You might want to start with Rolling Stone’s History of Rock and Roll; I wouldn’t be surprised, though, if you ended up reading more than one book to fill in the gaps.

Comment #15: Linnaeus  on  11/05  at  04:02 PM

You could tell everyone to forgo the hair on environmental concerns.  Wouldn’t want to rip a hole in the ozone directly above Manhattan.

Comment #16: Spiffy McBang  on  11/05  at  05:25 PM

You could always get a crimping iron and go about it that way.

Comment #17: Amanda Marcotte  on  11/05  at  06:49 PM

But, but… authenticity!  If you do 80s hair with a crimping iron and not two full cans of hairspray, you’ll just be a bunch of poseurs who don’t really love American nostalgia!

You know, typing that, I got a very real-sounding voice in my head of a suburban 40-something saying it as a serious critique.

Comment #18: Spiffy McBang  on  11/05  at  08:09 PM

You know, I can almost picture you as Phoebe Catessmile

You could go early eighties, and do the preppy look.  Finding a pink Izod with a green alligator instead of a blue one was like finding the Park Place piece in the McDonald’s Monopoly game.

Alas!  I can’t make NYC for the bash, though I’m not sure exactly how much you’d miss me.

Comment #19: Dana  on  11/05  at  10:39 PM

It’s not a Genius day, but that just means I won’t limit myself to what’s in my iTunes library…

2. “For Your Eyes Only”, Sheena Easton
3. “Our Lips Are Sealed”, The Go-Gos
4. “Heart and Soul”, T’Pau
5. “These Dreams”, Heart*
6. “Karma Chameleon”, Culture Club
7. “Here Comes the Rain Again”, Eurythmics
8. “99 Luftballons”, Nena
9. “Careless Whispers”, Wham*
10. “Neverending Story”, Limahl

And, as the lights come up:

11. “Take My Breath Away”, Berlin

Rejected as being inappropriate for a high school prom:

*songs I don’t actually have
