4) “My Baby Likes To Boogaloo”—-The Woggles
5) “Hungry Mouth”—-The Nurses

So, why am I in San Diego?  Well, barring some horrible obstacle, a friend of mine and I will be in Del Mar tomorrow night to see Devo.  I’m so excited.  I’m not saying they’re my favorite band, but you know.  I have a picture disk LP of their first album framed on my wall (along with the VU’s first album).  And my favorite DVD to show people is a live Devo concert where you watch their genius performance win over a largely indifferent audience at Lollapalooza.  I don’t own an energy dome, but I seriously considered it if it would help me get to the front of the stage tomorrow.  On one hand, it’s a geeky obsession.  On the other hand, they are a classic 70s-era punk band.  So, really, it’s kind of inevitable.  Luckily, my friend I’m going with is, if anything, a bigger Devo geek than me.  He’s the one who found out about the show and figured he had the frequent flier miles to get us here, so there you go.

Some songs I hope to hear, and suspect I will:

How big a dork I am: I’m going to be wearing my Moog T-shirt specially for show.  I guess we’ll have to add “bad ass synthesizers” to the objects of worship for the Church of the Mouse and the Disco Ball.

I’ve been remiss in showing cat pictures.  But I do have updates on Molly and Dusty.  Since we’ve moved, they’ve gotten, if anything, much happier.  They love the new condo.  They have a backyard that they can hang out in under supervision.  During the day, there are squirrels to watch.  The geography of the place is more fun to run around in.  Molly, who used to fear pretty much every person that isn’t me or Marc, has started to come out and sit in the living room when company comes over.

Here they are making out:

If I go outside to do anything without Dusty, she throws a fit:

Molly is shiny:

Devo punk?  New Wave, IMO.  After all, they weren’t spitting freaks who couldn’t play their instruments.

I’m probably the only one, but when Obama was repeating his “Now is the time” line last night, I of course heard a channeling of MLK, but also of the Crystal Method

Eric, that comment actually exposed your limited understanding of music history, I’m afraid.  I’m sort of impressed that you had the cojones to try to correct me on my knowledge of a band I’ve already pointed out is my favorite band.  Or on my knowledge of punk and New Wave.

For the record, “New Wave” bands, at least the first batch, were punk bands that were considered pop enough to be mainstreamed onto the radio.  You know, because people wanted to limit and marginalize the word “punk”.  Sadly, you fell for that hook, line, and sinker.  But bands like Blondie, Devo, and the Talking Heads came straight out of the same punk scene as the Ramones—-in fact, Blondie played a standing Saturday night double header with the Ramones at CBGB’s.  As a favor to you, I’d suggest that you don’t repeat that mistake.

One reason why you’ll sometimes see New Wave bands described as “post-punk”; there’s a gradient there.  Where a band is depends partially on how close it is to punk roots.

Eric, c’mon. “Punk bands can’t play their instruments” is like the “Get off my lawn!” of the music world. Honestly, in addition to everything else that’s already been mentioned, just listen to Television’s “Marquee Moon” for a bit. It’s impressive stuff.

I saw Devo at the Palladium in NY in November of 1980.  It’s still one of the top 3 shows I’ve ever seen.  Sheesh.  1980?  Wasn’t that before I was born?  Maybe not.

“Stompin’ At The Savoy” - Benny Goodman
“Mazltov” - Chicago Klezmer Ensemble
“Sugar Sugar” - Mary Lou Lord with Semisonic
“On Some Faraway Beach” - Brian Eno
“Eep Opp Ork Ah-Ah(Means I Love You) - Violent Femmes
“Open Up Your Heart And Let The Sun Shine In” - Frente
“Little People” - White Stripes
“Star” - Belly
“Rock ‘n’ Roll High Scholl” - The Ramones
“See Emily Play” - Pink Floyd

It looks like we’re loving some Saturday Morning Cartoon’s Greatest Hits today.

Why is there a picture of Mitt Romney’s sons at the top of this post?

Comment #27: Quaker in a Basement  on  08/29  at  05:11 PM

Ah, I was going to go off on the punk/new wave thing but I see that others here have done a fine job of that.  Nothing I can really add.  I will say that anyone who doesn’t think Devo is “punk” has never seen them live.  They were as sweaty, hard rockin’ and fast as any band of that era (and I’ve seen quite a few). Seeing them at a small theater in ‘79 was the highlight of my young life at the time.

Amanda, I am jealous.  Have an awesome time, and dance the poot one time for me!
