Oh, I see that you are celebrating George W Bush being president, which he will be all day today!  smile

Comment #1: Dana  on  01/19  at  09:39 AM

he will be all day today!

Hyuck hyuck…

I saw that Obama said again, yesterday, that he planned to remove US troops from Iraq. That’s a good sign. If, however, Obama believes than a troop increase in Afghanistan will solve the centuries-old problems of that region, then I think he’s fooling himself.

At least Obama states outright that the US economy is crap right now, and will get worse before it gets better. This is a good sign, as it is good strategy for him, and also quite realistic. The more realism that is let into the bubble-world of “the beltway” at this point, the better. It will be interesting to see how this all goes. I’ll be holding on to my (metaphorical) hat.

Discoballmousetarians Unite!

Oh thank you.

My toddler wakes up at 4:30am no matter what—put her to bed early, put her to bed late, give her a nap, give her no nap—it just doesn’t matter, she will awaken between 4 and 4:30, and as she’s a climber, she’s out of the crib.

So I’m punchy before I get a good does of caffeine.

Punchy enough to repeat the “O B A M A” when the little toy told me too, and mightily please when it told me “Correct!”

atheist, I read a poll the other day, and I’m too sleepy to find it right now, that not only are people feeling good about Obama coming in, they are also realistic that the problems are big and will take time and are willing to give him a year to get things going in the right direction.

People know how bad things are, and they know that it’s not going to be all better tomorrow.

That’s amazing, in our culture that gets bored after a week or two and with a media chomping at the bit to claim the “Obama Honeymoon” is already over, although he won’t be sworn in president till tomorrow.

Watched the Lincoln Memorial concert with my kids last night.  Dana, if you really think W is still the President today, in anything but name only, well, cling tight to your dreams, buddy.  They are all you have.

Caren, I think that poll was in the NYTimes.

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying this video today.

Watched the Lincoln Memorial concert with my kids last night.

I did, too. Spent most of the evening in tears.  There are so many emotions going on right now. The history of the moment. Yes, a sense of hope.  And the relief and emotional release of finally being rid of Bush.

S’funny how toddlers just naturally get up early, isn’t it? I seem to remember that that phase ends pretty early, though.

It will be interesting to see if the Obama administration continues to treat the public with a certain amount of openness and respect. I think it also would be interesting to compare speeches by Obama with speeches by Bush at the same time in their presidentcy, and see if they differ, and if so how? I don’t just want to suspect that Obama is a skillful politician, I want to know, and know specifically how.

Comment #6: atheist  on  01/19  at  10:34 AM

One of the descriptors consistently bandied about regarding the character of this nation is that it’s a “young” nation.  Hope, idealism, and confidence are the hallmarks of youth.  By restoring those three things, Barack Obama has done more than both Bushes and Regan combined.

If it was morning in America when Regan took over, it’s the next week and it’s morning again.  We just don’t feel as much of a need to wake ‘n’ bake to cope with the day.  We gots shit to do, yo.

That said:  I <3 Daft Punk.

Well, the peculiarly vicious and ignorant gloss that Republicanism gives, but I’m starting to believe that the fundamental problem is insolvable.  I just went through Kunstler’s “The Long Emergency”, and I’d love to shrug it off as overblown - except that it was written in 2005, and chapter 6 predicted the current meltdown precisely.

Now I’m scared.  His predictions re much of the US doesn’t bode well, and my own country is going to suffer.

I repeat - I’d love to be able to dismiss the book as bombast.  But go read the end of Chapter 6 - from the section “the Sprawl Economy and Funny Money” onwards - in light of recent events, and form your own opinion.

His thesis would suggest that no matter how good Obama is, things are going to get worse materially.  the best he might do is mitigate the political consequences. We live in interesting times.

That’s no small matter.

Comment #9: Cass  on  01/19  at  11:05 AM

There are many disappointments to come.

Many on the left are already disappointed with Obama for waffling on the war(s), Rick Warren, stating his opposition to homosexual marriage and a list of others.

Obama is the perfect politician, just as Bill Clinton was, and like Clinton, he is not out for our country, not out for the poor or the blacks or even the liberal base who put him there. Like Clinton, Obama is out for Obama.

What makes me nervous is the meteoric rise from a nobody to President in 5 years coming up through the Chicago political machine, infamous for its corruption. I just hope he’s not dirty or something surfaces that’s really, really bad after he is sworn in. It would not be pretty for the country.

Comment #10: papertiger  on  01/19  at  12:08 PM

Man, I think the inability to crack a decent joke alone might explain why the vast majority of right wing nuts are so insecure they find comfort in wingnuttery.  It may not be sexual inadequacy.  It’s humor inadequacy.

papertiger, it’s definitely evident that you’ve come here to bore us because if you continued to bore the people in your real life, they may murder you in order to get some peace and quiet.  I didn’t realize it was possible to say so much without saying anything at all.

<iu>People know how bad things are, and they know that it’s not going to be all better tomorrow. </i>

Media pundits won’t, though, and they’ll start going on and on, probably tomorrow, about how Obama is a failure for not fixing it all immediately.  Until the public starts to believe it.

Comment #12: Amanda Marcotte  on  01/19  at  12:14 PM

It’ll be interesting to see if the public starts to develop some deeper cynicism toward media pundits. I see some signs of it now, but not enough. I guess we’ll see.

Comment #15: atheist  on  01/19  at  12:22 PM

papertiger, please post something of some insight, not the cribbed talking points that the right-wing has shoved down your throat for you to regurgitate.

Obama’s better than McCain, better than Bush, and better than you. Accept the reality rather than trying to rationalize how Obama isn’t “really” as good as he’s showing himself to be.

Comment #16: Tyro  on  01/19  at  12:39 PM

Well, my point was not that Obama is not “good as you”, it was that Obama is still relatively unknown with a thin resume and it’s a risky move electing him President.

Anything can happen. Who would have thought in 1992 that Bill Clinton would be impeached?

Comment #17: Papertiger  on  01/19  at  01:34 PM

it’s a risky move electing him President.

In the scheme of things, and under the circumstances (given the available alternatives), it seemed a pretty obvious choice, actually. Spitting out the “Who is Barack Obama?????” is just a regurgitation of right-wing talking points from a group of losers grasping at straws at the moment.

Who Is Barack Obama? He’s the guy who got elected president after a hard-fought campaign. The people saying that Obama is too much of a risk and “risky” are the same people who were angrily attacking Gore and voting for W as a way to spite him and to this day hate the guy. As a consequence, it’s a bit hard to take their right-wing claims about Obama very seriously at the moment.

Comment #18: Tyro  on  01/19  at  01:42 PM

This country has gone through much worse and survived.

Indeed.  You managed to support, what, 25 million people comfortably enough in 1850 farming without oil, and you could probably do it again…

Comment #24: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  01/19  at  03:50 PM

Well, the last full day of having a sucky criminal president who is an embarrassment to our country, and who has been actively destroying our freedoms for eight years.  I’m glad it’s (almost) over.  It feels so good when the hitting stops ...

Yes, we are doomed to an inevitable decline.

People have been predicting the USA will collapse since, well, since July 5th 1776.

OH fuck you, paperasshole.  Obama is NOT part of Richie Daley’s political machine, which is the only properly called “Machine” in this city.  He’s not part of the Stroger or Jackson factions either.  If you really want to talk about our “dirty” politics, bother to read up on it.  Even Blago, corrupt as he is, did GOOD THINGS for the state, and I’m still glad I voted for him over Judy Baar “Let’s throw all the kids out on the street instead of providing healthcare or education for them” Topinka.

IN fact, to be honest, our previous Gov., George Ryan, who is currently doing time in Fed prison, was a good governor who kept all his campaign promises.  He went away for the graft and bribes and coverups from when he was Secretary of State.  And no, fixer of our screwed up death penalty aside, he does not deserve a pardon.

As for Barry?  There’s nothing dirty there.  The Clintons went over him with a fine-toothed comb.  If there was anything there,  they would have found it and used it.

As for that meteoric rise through the turbulent and often corrupt Illinois political waters?  It should make you more confident in his experience, since he’s had to have a good head on his shoulders to fight his way though without a machine behind him.  He’s no neophyte that the assholes in the Beltway will be able to bamboozle.

Jesse, Amanda, Pam, Auguste?  Can we please get a stick ruling on idiot troll?  He doesn’t read the posts and threadjacks by antagonizing people to respond.  I know I shouldn’t feed it, but arrgh, it’s stupid just BURNS.

Phoenician—

Did you know that the 1990s will see skyrocketing crime rates and a sharply contracting GDP? It’s true! People in 1991 said so…

Comment #28: Ben D.  on  01/19  at  04:10 PM

Oh, and of course in 1999 we were told that the stock market would rise forever and we would have peace and prosperity for as far as the eye could see. My point is things can change pretty quickly and predictions about the near future are usually way off.

Comment #29: Ben D.  on  01/19  at  04:11 PM

There’s so many people on the internet who know the future. I wonder where they get the crystal balls? Did they all go to Oracle school? Can they undress hotties with their X-Ray eyes?

Comment #30: atheist  on  01/19  at  05:37 PM

Indeed.  Just like people were saying the Soviet Union could never last, way back at the Bolshevik Revolution.

All I can suggest is that you take a look at the book, and draw your own conclusions.  Like I said, I wish he was wrong, wrong, wrong - but his prescience regarding the current crisis is pretty damned good.
