Happy Muslim Day, Islams!

John McCain decided to join his Muslim brothers and sistes in celebrating the end of Ramadan.  Unfortunately, he decided to celebrate the end of Ramadan 2005 (that year’s theme: Under The Sea) by ripping off George W. Bush’s short statement from that year.

After the break, the messages - the plagiarism is subtle, but see if you can follow:
John McCain, 2008:

On the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast, I extend my warm greetings to American Muslims and Muslims around the world.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan which is the holiest month of the Muslim year and a time of prayer, reflection, and fasting. To celebrate this holiday, many Muslims gather in their homes and mosques to thank God for His blessings and His help in keeping the fast.  Muslims also demonstrate their compassion by reaching out to the less fortunate and giving gifts of money or food to help those in need.  This year, many American Muslims have reached out to the victims of Hurricanes Gustav, Hanna, and Ike. Their contributions have been generous and reflect the important values shared by all Americans.

Our Nation is blessed to count many Muslims among our fellow citizens.  As Americans, we share a commitment to family, a belief in God’s justice and man’s moral responsibility, and hope for a future of peace and tolerance.

Cindy and I send our best wishes for a joyful celebration.

George W. Bush, 2005:

I send warm greetings to American Muslims and Muslims around the world observing Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, a time of prayer, reflection, and fasting. It is the holiest month of the Muslim year. To celebrate this holiday, many Muslims gather in their homes and mosques to thank God for His blessings and His help in keeping the fast. Muslims also demonstrate their compassion by reaching out to the less fortunate and giving gifts of money or food to help those in need. This year, many American Muslims have reached out to the victims of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma and to those affected by the devastating earthquake in South Asia. Their contributions have been generous and reflect the important values shared by all Americans.

Our Nation is blessed to count many Muslims among our fellow citizens. As Americans, we share a commitment to family, a belief in God’s justice and man’s moral responsibility, and hope for a future of peace and tolerance.

Laura and I send our best wishes for a joyful celebration. Eid Mubarak.

John McCain respects you, Muslims.  And to show you how much he does, he’s willing to share with you a book he’s written by hand on the subject called the “Qu’ran”.

Are you sure his middle name is “Salman”, not “Sidney”?

I want to see a COLB!

Er, “sure his middle name is not Sidney, but Salman?”

Oh LOL.  This has to be dragged out whenever someone mentions Biden’s stupid plagiarism of Neil Kinnock’s speech—at least Biden had the excuse of having BRAIN CANCER at the time.  McCrankypants is just lazy.

I don’t see it.  /snark

He put in an amount of effort toward marking the end of Ramadan that equals the respect he has for Muslims in general…

As Americans, we share… a belief in God’s justice…

Plagiarism aside,  these statements really grate. I am so very tired of politicians implying that I am not a real American with statements like this. I mean, c’mon, how many conservatives really think that Muslims “share” with them a belief in God’s justice that is similar in any reasonable way. This shit stinks. Both times.

He… he just fucking stole an entire paragraph… I mean, he just changed the names of the hurricanes!

Joe Biden forgets to cite a dude whose speech he cited every other time, once, twenty years ago, and apparently he’s a plagiarist for life. McCain copies an entire fucking paragraph from Bush’s speech and what?!

The worst part of this is that if you’re going to steal something, this is the dumbest thing to steal, ever. How hard is it to get up there and wish Muslims a happy Ramadan?! I mean, I could probably improvise that and I’m not any great public speaker.

This fucking election…

Further examination reveals that the communique in question is actually an email. That’s even worse; wasn’t there a single minimally literate and culturally aware flunky on hand to briefly compose something nice? Oh, who am I kidding…

John Sidney McCain III’s dad couldn’t even come up with an original name for him, so copying must run in his family.

Don’t be getting down on a man for his DNA, racists!

Americans, of whatever faith, believe in the rule of law, not “God’s justice”.

Comment #11: Ben D.  on  10/02  at  10:19 AM

*jaw drops*

At first I wondered if there was a wiki page somewhere that both campaigns cribbed all their information from.  Then I got to the hurricane part.

Well, if you’re going to plagiarize, you should do it from a master of rhetoric and speechifcathifying like George Walker Bush.

Seriously, this could be the bestest YouTube ad evah.

“John McCain doesn’t just share Bush’s policies, he shares his very brain.”

Oh, I believe in “God’s justice” too.  I just don’t think it’s meted out here on Earth, and that therefore human beings, and their governments, should worry about their own justice and let God take care of her/his/its/their own.
