Next entry: Riddle me this Previous entry: The total and obvious non-sexism of Penn Jillette

Here, let some dudes tell you, then

Feminism

As usual when women complain about sexual harassment and sexist wankery, there's a lot of bullshit excuse-making. Todays theme is, "It's only scary, uncomfortable and offensive to women to say sexist shit to them because women choose to feel bad!" It's the sexism apologist's version of "The Secret". Lots of it on this thread, with examples like:

The “C” word is another example of investing a word with much more power than any word deserves.  It has now become the taboo word for women (feminist or not), like the “N” word or the “F” word.  Only members of the group to which the words describe can use them. I don’t miss them but giving words such power to hurt gives too much power to people who would hurt you.

And the more illiterate and egregious:

But what I’m saying is that simply calling a woman you hate a ‘cunt’ is not necessarily sexist. It should really only be like calling a man a ‘bastard’ or a ‘twat’. But because our society (and sometimes feminism) infantilizes women it’s seen as worse.

And you see it all over this situation. TL;DR: A teenage girl who is an atheist activist posted a picture of herself with an open-mouthed "gleeful" face on Facebook. A bunch of men whose brains are addled from spending way too much time looking at porn saw an open female mouth on the internet, and confused about why there wasn't a cock in it already suggested to this 16-year-old that she would be doing everyone a favor contributing her image to a catalog of erotic images. When told, rightfully, that they are creepy motherfuckers, they whined and complained that people who believe that one should remember that women are more than sperm-draining machines are, to steal a phrase from Sady Doyle, trying to snatch away their boners.

All of which is why I'm not going to bother to argue any of this crap down, but instead to post this video, the premiere episode of "Fridays at Galweather", a new web series about management consultants on the one day a week they spend at the office. Maybe coming from a bunch of male comedians, the point will go down easier than having to listen to some stupid bitches with their constant yakking about how unfair sexism is.

It's 4 minutes and well worth your time.

No, see, you aren’t allowed to be offended, because I am a unique special snowflake, and my words and actions are to be placed in a separate category from all other people, and when I say “You have amazing breasts” it is as removed from context as if I were a Martian, visiting Earth for the first time. I deserve this special dispensation, because as a white dude, I’ve been given a pass for everything my whole life, and so it isn’t fair to call me out on something because I’ve never been called out on it before, so clearly I can’t mean harm if I don’t expect you to fight back.

I have been REALLY enjoying House of Lies, despite the often gratuitous female nudity.  That clip just makes me like it more.

Comment #2: shinobi42  on  02/07  at  09:13 PM

And just as I finished reading your post, I go over to Pharyngula and read this from Scotty Hickox:

Any chick who would rather have an abortion than have a few strech marks is a cunt…sorry if that pisses you off but its true.

Comment #3: ema  on  02/07  at  09:17 PM

Hmmmm….. That comment makes me want to get an abortion and I’m not even pregnant.

Wanna bet he’s the kind of guy who bitches about how he’s so oppressed because his wife’s tits aren’t as firm now that she’s had a baby?

Comment #4: Amanda Marcotte  on  02/07  at  09:21 PM

Last maternal delivery I was present for, the mother got wheeled in for an emergency C-section at 1 am because of persistant preeclampsia along with inability to dilate.

So… yeah.  Stretch marks.  Nothing else to see here, folks.  Just move along.

Comment #5: NBarnes  on  02/07  at  09:33 PM

So I guess it’s not racist for whites to call blacks the n-word in an insulting manner either, right?

Comment #6: Dilan Esper  on  02/07  at  09:38 PM

Dilan; precisey.  The offense occurs in the mind of the target, that they give a word that kind of power.  You see, words aren’t symbols that refer to complex systems of meaning and referring to a history that may have very real injustices, including some that are still very real and present.  It’s just a word, right?

Comment #7: NBarnes  on  02/07  at  09:39 PM

@NBarnes Words are indistinguishable from the sounds of the tides.

Comment #8: JilliefromChile  on  02/07  at  09:45 PM

Welp, Eleanor Roosevelt said no one could make you feel inferior without your permission so dudes get to call you a cunt now because, Eleanor Roosevelt, shut up!

Comment #10: Triplanetary  on  02/07  at  10:12 PM

When I punch someone, it’s not my fault that their nerve endings send pain signals to their brain.  The people I punch are giving the fists hitting their face too much power.

Comment #11: Jake  on  02/07  at  11:18 PM

“Stop hitting yourself!” is truly the battle cry of the conservative victim-blamer.

Comment #12: ganews_  on  02/07  at  11:28 PM

That clip was funny, but I’m not sure I get the end of it. Was the implication that he was going to hit on that woman after he closed the shades? That doesn’t really fit with the rest of the clip, though.

Comment #13: geogami  on  02/08  at  12:10 AM

Geogami:  ‘House of lies’ ... I take it that the boss is exactly going to hit on the woman, because, ‘do as I say, not as I do’?

Comment #14: oldmunni  on  02/08  at  02:49 AM

@geogami: I’d say so, yes. I guess it is a funny ending because of the obvious hypocrisy? That’s the way I read it, anyway.

Because pregnancy is just a cakewalk, apart from the stretchmarks.  Oh, and a mortality that’s in the same ballpark as that for kidney donation.  Recovery time similar to donating a kidney, too.  Probably about the same rate of complications, though I haven’t checked.

Funny how hardly anyone moralizes about the decision to donate a kidney, though.

Still, given his views, I’m sure this guy must be in the donor registry, right?

Comment #16: ZenPoseur  on  02/08  at  03:07 AM

So not taking that bet. Because, you know, if the bitch had just watched what she ate when she was pregnant and maybe hit the gym a little harder after the baby was born, instead of letting herself go, right, guys?

He’s probably also the guy who whines that his wife doesn’t want to sex him all the time just because she gave birth and has a newborn to care for and still does most of the shitwork around the house.

Comment #17: mythago  on  02/08  at  04:40 AM

Any chick who would rather have an abortion than have a few strech marks is a cunt…sorry if that pisses you off but its true.

I remember when I was pregnant suddenly having this flash of realisation that gosh, every single woman I saw with a child had been pregnant and given birth.  Yes, of course I knew this before, and had plenty of empathy for that fact, but actually being in the position of heartburn and back ache and constant peeing and painful, swollen feet and ankles and the sheer unrelenting discomfort of having this huge thing sticking out of the front of my body, and looking ahead with trepidation to an experience universally acknowledged to be one of the most painful things a human being can experience really brought it into focus for me.

This guy lacks even the most ability to empathise, and since society will never teach him that women’s experiences are as true and as real as men’s (which I think honestly was one of the reasons why I hadn’t fully appreciated the implications of pregnancy and birth, even though I was a woman and a feminist), he will continue to pump out such egregious and offensively flippant nonsense until someone kicks him in the nuts for around 24 hours in one stretch and then tells him that men in Farawaywherever Land do this all the time in the fields and then go straight back to work immediately.  Any volunteers?

In the clip the boss makes his point about sexual harassment to his two subordinates, and he does this by sexually harassing them. Their reactions show that when they are on the receiving end of this behavior, they don’t like it one bit. The implied joke at the end is that the boss is able to make his point so effectively precisely because he is an expert at this behavior.

I challenge anyone who watches porn usually to look in the mirror and try to tell to themselves, honestly (not here, because writing whatever on the internet is very easy), that the image Amanda is describing here didn’t automatically show up in their minds.

Nobody will because, despite what porn lovers want to believe, porn really twists your mind like that. I wish for this to be a realization for at least one or two people, and the comment will have been worth it.

I certainly see why the ending is unpleasant. But while the ending could be seen as normalizing the behavior, it could also be seen as underscoring the points made by the first part of the sketch: that sexual harassment exists within the corporate structure and is a serious problem.

Comment #22: atheist  on  02/08  at  10:22 AM

Okay, this Facebook post from Scotty seriously pisses me off coming just one day after reading about the anti-abortion bill that Kansas will be taking up today.  It actually exempts doctors from malpractice suits if they LIE TO THEIR FEMALE PATIENTS about their health risks or the viability of their pregnancies if they think it will stop them from getting an abortion.  But hey, wrongful death suits are still on the table, so SILVER LINING.

That’s right….these motherfuckers are literally okay with women dying.

I wish for him a whole bucketful of kidney stones, to rip through his dick one at a time, until he wises up to other people’s pain.

Comment #27: vitaminC  on  02/08  at  01:01 PM

Jorge, on the slim chance you don’t know, abortion is never done “right before the birth”. If you’re trying to suggest that anyone is arguing for the right to abort at 9 months, that’s a strawman - don’t do it. Most abortions aren’t done on fetuses, they’re done on embryos, and many abortions that are done on fetuses are done because of stupid waiting period laws and delays caused by lack of access.

“I think this is an insufficient way of conceptualizing the moral issues of abortion.”

How about this then? Do you agree with forcing people to donate kidneys? No? But someone, someone who breathes, thinks, lives fully with family and friends, will die if you don’t. Why don’t pro-lifers promote kidney donation? The answer is that they don’t really give a shit about protecting life, they want to reduce the bodily autonomy of women.

Comment #28: lijakaca  on  02/08  at  01:22 PM

Also does this mean that its OK to kill people in a vegetative state who are being a drain on other people? Most people would say no.

That’s not the case in the contemporary U.S., Jorge.

Removing life support from people who’ll die without it is pretty widely accepted. Provided the next of kin agree with that decision.

Ceasing feeding from a person in a vegetative state was the issue in the Terri Schiavo case, where the question wasn’t whether the hospice could take that action, but whether Schiavo’s husband or her parents got to make the call.

Comment #29: witless chum  on  02/08  at  01:57 PM

Okay, so Jorge, you have a questionable grasp on most of our topics and you do not have mad English skills for these subjects.  Please listen more and I will try not to call you totally stupid when some of the dumb may be being caused by a language issue.
Absolutely do not try to tell native speakers what our slang terms mean, either directly or by connotation.  You really do not have a clue.  Most of us hesitate to tell other native English speakers from different cultures what our shared slang terms mean as they are often different on the connotation level.

@Comment #22: jorge.1991

But then that opens up another can of words, where do we draw the line?

There are many ways to answer that, which is why the choice should be left to the woman involved, not legislated from afar. You and I may have our opinions about what is right or wrong but the woman who is risking her life probably doesn’t care what we think, and she shouldn’t have to.

@karpad

I’ve never been called out on it before, so clearly I can’t mean harm if I don’t expect you to fight back.

If you’re trying to suggest that anyone is arguing for the right to abort at 9 months, that’s a strawman - don’t do it.

I argue for the right to abort at the latest stages because when a woman or other uterus owner is terminating a pregnancy that far along something has gone very, very wrong. Jorge, if a person is asking for an abortion at 8-9 months it’s because her doctors are telling her she must. No one willy-nilly aborts that late. Sometimes it’s life or death; the body can’t handle the stress of a pregnancy on top of other conditions or injuries and is starting to fail, or a life-saving treatment is fatal for the fetus and mom doesn’t have time to wait. More often at that far along the fetus is simply unviable. It’s dead or dying or will die shortly after being born. The mom can carry a corpse hoping it wont go septic before her body expels it or in the latter case, she can finish the pregnancy, go through childbirth, and hold her new baby while it dies. Do you think any person should be forced to go through that? I can’t imagine being so cruel, which is why when people pull that slippery-slope, what if she didn’t know/changed her mind, wants to abort a perfectly healthy, viable fetus nonsense, I say go ahead. If, in a world of infinite universes and possibilities, that straw-person exists and wants to do something kind of shitty like terminating a healthy pregnancy that’s almost over, they should be allowed to, because one morally questionable abortion is worth never forcing a woman to die for the sake of a fetus that dies with her.

Well, yeah. Fuck women. Most of them won’t have sex with me, don’t want to talk to me, don’t think my jokes are funny, and probably wouldn’t piss on me if I were on fire. Hell, I’m starting to wonder if my mom even loves me. Women suck. They think I’m a fucking idiot and a loser. I don’t mean any of the nasty things I say. I’m a guy, I can’t help it. Why are they so fucking uptight? Why can’t they just like me and think I’m funny?

Let the stupid bitches die. That’ll show them.

If… that straw-person exists and wants to do something kind of shitty like terminating a healthy pregnancy that’s almost over, they should be allowed to do so..

Bear in mind also that beyond a certain point, a termination of a healthy pregnancy would not be a termination at all, it would be a live birth, producing a baby, that the woman in question didn’t want.  You literally can’t “abort” a baby at 8 and a half months.

Comment #35: Katherine  on  02/09  at  08:52 AM

How is calling a woman a “cunt” different that calling a man a “dick” ?
