He’s A Laugher

imageSteve Benen notes that the outrage of the morning is that President Obama is a little gigglypants

“You’re sitting here. And you’re—you are laughing. You are laughing about some of these problems. Are people going to look at this and say, ‘I mean, he’s sitting there just making jokes about money—’ How do you deal with—I mean: explain…” Kroft asked at one point.

“Are you punch-drunk?” Kroft said.

“No, no. There’s gotta be a little gallows humor to get you through the day,” Obama said, with a laugh.

Tom Frank has also been asking Obama to speak to our great national mission, because what will stop a multibillion dollar company from being run into the ground is a pep talk.  A lot of the appeal of Obama for the press wasn’t what he said or did during the campaign, but instead the idea that they were covering the man who could be the first black President.  The novelty has since passed, and so now they want what they always want from a President in times of news: someone from a movie who does fun and entertaining and wonderful things that make them feel like they’re standing astride the cusp of history, putting poetry to progress.

This is because most news organizations require you to capture their Pokemon in order to work for them, apparently.

Sometimes you have to laugh when the person talking to you says incredibly stupid things.  Especially when you have to talk to people who consider it their job not to listen to you or to contribute to a conversation, but to look for a gotcha moment.

Seems to me W laughed all the time.  His stupid “he he he” at the most inappropriate times.  Joking about getting drunk in the old days in New Orleans during Katrina.  “Looking” for hidden WMDs in a hilarious video for the Press Corps.

People who don’t know what a good laugh is, unless it is entirely superficial and staged or involves some ism, don’t get why Obama has such a genuine laugh.

Nevermind all the studies that people who find humor everywhere live longer, perform bettter, etc.

I seem to remember that one of the endearing traits of St. Ronnie was his easy laughter.  Yes, some of it was inappropriate, but it really did make you kind of like the guy!  Don’t they remember this?  Or is liking the guy for not being sufficiently <strike>white</strike> Presidential something they have a hard time with?

Thank God for laughter and humanity and genuine feelings.  What do we remember most, visually, about FDR depite far worse times?  Is it not his smile and the cigarette holder at a jaunty angle?  Nothing so cures the soul as laughter.  We need it; we crave it.  The thing I love most about the Obamas as a couple is how they tease eachother and the obvious joy they get from it.  Good on you, Mr. President.

And these folks never noticed how often Bush would giggle when he was discussing such light-hearted topics as casualties in Iraq, etc?

Comment #4: Blitzgal  on  03/23  at  12:53 PM

The movie and TV show M.A.S.H. are probably a lot closer to the reality in the Obama White House.

OTOH, Obama doesn’t wear a suit coat 24/7, and uses a teleprompter, and appears on Leno, so maybe it really is like Beavis and Butthead every day…

This is why I’d make a terrible President.  I’d be constantly inserting references to Monty Python or Star Wars into press releases.

because GW never laughed at inappropriate times. ever. god, are these people really that stupid, or do they act that way on purpose? this is what i really want an answer to.

Comment #7: chibi  on  03/23  at  01:15 PM

Yeah, the only thing anyone has to do for a recognizable Bush impression is to giggle and smirk inappropriately, but it’s outrageous that Obama takes the time to laugh when he should be working on the economy 24/7, right?

Actually, now that I think about it, this fits in really well with the wingnut “liberals have no sense of humor” meme. Conservative humor consists of making fun of people with less power than you (that is, what most of us call “bullying,” not humor) and they insist that liberals “have no sense of humor” because we don’t find it funny. So in wingnut logic, there’s nothing wrong with Bush giggling about dropping bombs or torturing “bad guys,” but rich people losing lots of money, that’s no laughing matter!

My fellow Americans, I’m pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.

Did you hear that?  Ronnie actually said BOMBING.  Wow, now that’s some presidential humor right there!

Watch it for yourself!

Obama is juggling the most serious crises in the whole world.  I figure he would either be chuckling or he would be an incredibly somber individual

He did an exemplary job on “60 Minutes” last night.

Maybe that’s one reason that the republicans never fielded Bill Weld for higher office - that, and the neocons hated him with a passion for his unapologetically pro-choice stance and championing gay and lesbian safety and mental health in MA.

Right-wingers/conservatives use humor as part of the pecking order. You’re lower on teh totem pole? Then we’ll laugh at you. And you better like it too, because it shows you know how to keep your place. If you don’t like it, then you don’t have a sense of humor!

Comedians on the Left tend to go after people higher up to take them down a peg, and that just steams conservatives. That’s not humor! You’re laughing at priests/the president/corporate bigwigs! You should be giving them respect!

Obama laughing darkly about the economy, which he is trying to fix, is completely different from Bush laughing about Iraq casualties, which were his fault and which he did nothing either to prevent or to stop in the future. For that reason alone, Bush’s “inappropriate” laughter comes across as mean-spirited, while Obama’s is a sanity-maintaining measure.

You & me both. Just ask my wife. I can’t answer ANY question w/out relating it to Python/Simpsons/Family Guy.

Kroft-“Are you punch-drunk?”

Obama- “LOL!, No, but I do bowl like a retard”

Looks like Tom Friedman made the pep talk request, not Tom Frank.  Almost did a spit take at the thought of Frank saying that.

This is so plain an observation that I’m embarrassed I never identified it before.

Gallows humor is something people use to deal with grief, despondency, outrage, and tragedy. It’s so common, I can’t see this not being another thing that endears Omaba to most of the nation, no matter how his opponents (and the media seem to be mostly opposing him) try to make him look bad.

And I bet you’re just loving this whole load of shit, aren’t you?  You love it when the far-right media makes a mountain out of a molehill.  Admit it.

Forget the issues, forget our destroyed standing in the world, forget the economy, forget all that - Obama laughed on 60 Minutes!  Everyone should get mad!

I’m not laughing.  And it’s not because Obama laughed.

Jesse, I think you mean Tom Friedman, not Thomas Frank…

Comment #21: jamesf  on  03/23  at  11:45 PM

This is so plain an observation that I’m embarrassed I never identified it before.

I spend something like 60% of my work time finding bugs in software. My experience is that things that are the most obvious are the easier to miss, precisely because they’re so obvious you expect someone else would have picked up on them by now (and thus you don’t look for them as much… you look for the convoluted bizarre stuff).

And then you get “conservative by default” shows like South Park, whose schtick is to find Real Higherups (right-wing) and then promote some left-wing known name as an Honorary Higherup for ‘balance’, and then piss on both their houses and call it ‘edgy comedy’.

(“Conservative by default” : the term I use to refer to the concept that Howard Zinn mentions in his history books that says “you can’t be neutral on a moving train”. If you’re attacking both sides equally, then by default whichever is dominant in society still wins out.)

Comment #22: BlackBloc  on  03/24  at  11:28 AM

Also, typical Gen X ‘pox on both their houses’ comedy in general (and South Park in particular) likes to attack anyone who is ‘eager for change’, meaning activists of the left and right, and what’s the name of a political theory that holds that it is best to preserve the status quo instead of seeking a form of progress? Conservativism. The ‘by default’ moniker comes from the idea that maybe these people don’t really think the current world is something to hold up as an example, but since they have a problem with anyone who wants to change it and they believe the world as it is is more or less inevitable, then that makes them conservatives by default.
