Hot mic fun: Noonan, Murphy trash Palin on MSNBC

Conservative commentators think they are off the air; hear what they really think about Palin! Delish—with a rough transcript:

Murphy: You know, because I come out of the blue swing state government work.  Engler, Whitman, Thompson, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush.  And these guys, this is all how you want to (inaudible) this race.  You know, just run it up.  And it’s not gonna work.
Noonan: It’s over.
Murphy: Still, McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech to do himself some good.
Noonan: I saw Kay this morning
Todd: They’re all bummed out.  I mean, is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?
Murphy: She’s never been comfortable.
Noonan: The most qualified?  No.  I think they went for this, excuse me, political bullshit about narratives and (inaudible) the picture.
Murphy: Yeah, but what’s the narrative?
Noonan: Every time the Republicans do that because that’s not where they live and it’s not what they’re good at and they blow it.
Murphy: You know what’s really the worst thing about it?  The greatness of McCain is no cynicism
Todd: And as you called it gimmicky.
Murphy: ... and this is cynicism.

This is bombshell stuff, simply because any punditry out of these folks from now on that doesn’t correlate with what they said during this hot mic video can be called out as bullsh*t.

So what are the oddsmakers saying about when McCain dumps his veep nom?

Wow, we can’t GET this lucky!

If I were Barack Obama, I’d run out and buy a lottery ticket right now.  He’s been on a winning streak since the beginning of the Democratic convention.

Comment #2: Bradley  on  09/03  at  06:28 PM

I still say McCain doesn’t dare dump Palin—he’ll look indecisive, confused, and clumsy. Besides, the greatest sin for a Republican candidate is *not* sticking to his guns, no matter how dumb the decision. If he changes his mind, he’s a waffler and a flip-flopper. And even if Palin resigns, we all know that the truth will come out pretty quickly, that he asked her to join the ticket, changed his mind, and pressured her to quit.

McCain picking Palin is looking more and more like the political equivalent of the Darwin Awards.

Comment #3: Scott  on  09/03  at  06:29 PM

Dang, Pam, you got us beat.  We surrender.  The only way out of this for us Repuglicans would be to find some video of Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden calling Obama unqualified to be Commander-in-Chief.  But since we’re no good at vetting I guess we’ll never find such bombshells.

Comment #4: The Raving Atheist  on  09/03  at  06:30 PM

he only way out of this for us Repuglicans would be to find some video of Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden calling Obama unqualified to be Commander-in-Chief.

Because that’s been working so well for you.  Maybe you should stick with surrendering.

Comment #5: Doug H. (Fausto no more)  on  09/03  at  06:32 PM

Raving Atheist, you can’t seriously believe that Biden and Clinton campaigning against Obama in the primary begins to compare to this revelation.  Can you?  That’s either dramatically dishonest or completely stupid.

These are two Republican operative who revealed their true feelings—which run counter to the official “message”—when they thought no one would hear.  They’ve accidentally sabotaged McCain’s campaign and undercut the meme that the campaign has been trying to put out there—“We all approve of Palin, and criticism of her is just a non-story manufactured by a misogynist press.”  McCain has even less credibility now than he did this morning—quite a feat, all things considered.

Comment #6: Bradley  on  09/03  at  06:36 PM

Wow.  To quote a famous politician, ‘It’s Christmas.’

Comment #7: Kristen from MA  on  09/03  at  06:37 PM

That’s either dramatically dishonest or completely stupid.

Don’t forget, this is a both/and blog.  Why choose?

Comment #8: Mnemosyne  on  09/03  at  06:37 PM

This is just too fabulous.  Scary, but Peggy Noonan and I both think Palin’s nomination is BS.  Who’da thunk it?

Comment #9: BetsyTX  on  09/03  at  06:38 PM

I always thought that Bush only “nominated” Harriet Miers in order to say he wanted to nominate a woman for the position, but he wasn’t allowed to or the liberal media turned people against her, etc. Maybe McCain is using another under-qualified woman to make a gesture at trying to look as though he respects women but in the end will dump her and pick some male version of Palin with a bit more experience. It’s deja vu.

Comment #10: Sara Pulis  on  09/03  at  06:38 PM

Dang, Pam, you got us beat.  We surrender.

I bet that sounded better in the original French.

The best part of all this is the saint bbq now can’t live with the monster he’s created and he can’t rid of her.  Sweet.

And for those us who nice heaping helping schadenfreude with our politics, palin looks to be a nearly inexhaustible source.

Comment #13: ice weasel  on  09/03  at  06:40 PM

Nope. RA doesn’t even know enough French to speak English properly.

Comment #14: Dan, Grand High Emperor of Bananas Foster  on  09/03  at  06:46 PM

I already write off anything that Peggy Noonan says as bullshit, just on general principals.

Comment #15: Captain Bathrobe  on  09/03  at  06:52 PM

principles dammit!  Well, maybe on principals, too, depending.

Comment #16: Captain Bathrobe  on  09/03  at  06:54 PM

I think Mike Murphy is more shocking. He was McCain’s campaign chair in 2000. Now he says McCain is “cynical”. This would be like James Carville bashing Hillary Clinton off-mic!

Comment #17: Ben D.  on  09/03  at  06:54 PM

Almost the first thing I was taught when I stepped into the studio: this is live television, so assume every mike is hot and every camera is on.

And for good reason: the last thing the MSM wants to show is anyone on-air giving their honest opinions. Thanks for the professionalism, Peggy—you’ve provided a great window on how the GOP money establishment really feels about this embarrassing VP pick.

Comment #18: Gracchus  on  09/03  at  07:05 PM

Man, I’ve read enough TBogg to know that losing Peggy Noonan is kind of a big deal.

Comment #19: annejumps  on  09/03  at  07:09 PM

These are two Republican operative who revealed their true feelings

Yes, and what a shock it would be to find out that Howard Wolfson or Mark Penn really believed that Barack Obama is just a lightweight community organizer who thinks he is qualified to be president because he has been running for the office for most of his Senate term—although he (or his Democratic operative puppeteers) has been running the campaign for less time than Sarah Palin has been governor.  No, wait—everyone believes that.

Actually, Bradley, what’s stupid and dishonest is for you to believe that the press will eat its own and go after Noonan and Murphy.

Comment #20: The Raving Atheist  on  09/03  at  07:12 PM

It’s currently at 14.1% on Intrade.  Personally, I think he’s going to stick with Palin for the same reason that he went with her in the first place.  The Religious Right _loves_ her.

Comment #21: L33tminion  on  09/03  at  07:13 PM

McCain is in prison again—this time one built by his own nutty base with Palin as the guard.

Comment #22: Ben D.  on  09/03  at  07:33 PM

Actually, Bradley, what’s stupid and dishonest is for you to believe that the press will eat its own and go after Noonan and Murphy.

Uh… I think you have me confused with someone else, as I’ve never said anything about “the press” and what it will or will not do (of course, media figures go after each other all the time; the notion that Keith Olbermann, Ariana Huffington, Anderson Cooper, or any number of media figures will ignore this story out of professional courtesy is patently absurd) .

But, again, any person who sees a similarity between this story and the fact that Democrats who campaigned against Obama said unflattering things about him during the campaign probably isn’t capable of arguing with grown-ups.

To reiterate—Clinton, Biden, Penn, and Wolfson were running against Obama (or were working for someone who was running against Obama); Noonan and Murphy are supposedly on McCain’s side.  So when your allies—allies—reveal that they think your poor-decision making ability means “it’s over,” that’s a bit more significant than an opponent talking smack in the press.

Do try to keep up.

Comment #23: Bradley  on  09/03  at  07:39 PM

although he (or his Democratic operative puppeteers) has been running the campaign for less time than Sarah Palin has been governor

You guys have got to start coordinating your talking points.  Did Obama start running his campaign two years ago, which is six months longer than Palin’s been governor of Alaska, or not?

Sit down, do the math, and let me know once you’ve decided if you’re going with the “Obama’s been running for the presidency since he got to the Senate” or “Obama’s been running his campaign for a shorter time than Palin’s been governor.”  You’ve got to pick one or the other, because otherwise you’re claiming that 18 months is longer than 24 months.

Comment #24: Mnemosyne  on  09/03  at  07:40 PM

Note to right wingers:

You need new talking points. BADLY.

PS: I heard McCain started advertising in North Carolina yesterday, and Charlie Cook now rates North Carolina as a “toss up”. North. Carolina. Srssly? Your internals must suck, hard.

Comment #25: Ben D.  on  09/03  at  07:47 PM

Meanwhile, there is This Missive from a woman who is totally fed up with Palin’s “I’m the Monarch and The Rules Don’t Apply To MEEEEE!” bullshit in Wasilla.  Somehow, the words “constitution”, “statute”, and the term “limits on executive power in a democracy” don’t enter into Miss Congeniality’s vocabulary when she wants to, say, fire a librarian for refusing to remove certain books from the stacks.

Anne Kilkenny is a real person - the NYT has interviewed her.

Comment #26: Ms Kate  on  09/03  at  08:28 PM

Peggy’s added a blurb to the top of today’s column trying to explain herself and her “barnyard” language.

Comment #27: annejumps  on  09/03  at  09:03 PM

Palin sounds like shes babbling in that explanation.

Comment #28: Ben D.  on  09/03  at  10:02 PM

annejumps (or anyone), can you link to the blurb?  I’ve been looking but I can’t find it.
Thanks.

Comment #29: goblinbee  on  09/03  at  10:03 PM

Er, Noonan does rather.

Comment #30: Ben D.  on  09/03  at  10:05 PM

Noonan always sounds like she’s babbling.

Comment #31: John D.  on  09/03  at  10:12 PM

John, touche!

Comment #32: Ben D.  on  09/03  at  10:31 PM

It would be so awesome if McCain has to dump Palin. That’s incompetence that you can’t just walk away from. Every Red stater in the country is going to know it when they step into the voting booth and see McCain/<strike>Palin</strike>Ghost of Ronald Reagan written in pencil on the ballot.

Comment #33: Keith  on  09/04  at  01:53 AM

Sit down, do the math, and let me know once you’ve decided if you’re going with the “Obama’s been running for the presidency since he got to the Senate” or “Obama’s been running his campaign for a shorter time than Palin’s been governor”

I’m going with option #2, thanks, Mnemosyne.  It’s the relevant one, insofar as it’s the one Obama himself has been relying on to trumpet his “executive” skills in running a multi-million dollar, 2,500 employee campaign, something he (or his puppeteers) didn’t start until 2007.  Actually, The One is the One who can’t get things straight, since in his notorious interview with Anderson Cooper he was comparing his performance with that of Palin’s earlier tenure as Mayor of “Wassilly” (as he sexistly pronounced it)—rather than her service as Governor.

However, I do agree that Obama was wasting his time and taxpayers’ money in the Senate daydreaming about his presidential run well before Palin became Governor.  So here’s the new talking point:  “Obama was disregarding his Senatorial duties for years before Palin was governor, and then totally abandoned them to let puppeteers run his campaign after she became governor.”

Oh, and Obama took office in January 2005, nearly four years ago, not 24 months.  I know it seems much shorter, though, given how very little he’s accomplished.

Comment #34: The Raving Atheist  on  09/04  at  12:26 PM

Mayor of “Wassilly” (as he sexistly pronounced it)—

Yes, crazypants. The word “silly” is, itself, sexist. Even when applied to a genderless item such as a town. Moreover it is entirely possible to PRONOUNCE something in a SEXIST way.

When you are an unhinged whackaloo interbunny troll.

Comment #35: Well, what?  on  09/04  at  01:42 PM

The word “silly” is, itself, sexist. Even when applied to a genderless item such as a town. Moreover it is entirely possible to PRONOUNCE something in a SEXIST way.

The context speaks for itself.  He clearly thinks her mayoralty was “silly” because she’s a woman (all of WaSilly’s revenue came from bake sales, I suppose), and he won’t even acknowledge that she’s governor.  There are entire feminist blogs devoted to Mr. “Just a Minute, Sweetie”‘s treatment of Hillary Clinton, so don’t pretend for even a minute that he wasn’t aware of what he was doing.  He was using the name of the “genderless town” to insult her gender.

Did you mean that it is entirely IMpossible to pronounce something in a sexist way?  Otherwise, it would appear that you’re supporting my thesis.  Assuming you did mean impossible, however, perhaps you could explain why you believe that it’s impossible to convey sexism through the deliberate mispronunciation of a word.
