How Much Do You Love This Mess?

Voting

Granted, today will be nerve-racking for everyone, but today’s still my favorite day of the year.  There’s something uniquely wholesome about the practice of Election Day, over a hundred million people headed to similar places to do a similar - and meaningful - thing.  It doesn’t involve the consumerism of our other national holidays and hallmarks.  It’s a day of reward for true believers, the ones who’ve spent all their spare hours folding mail or knocking on doors for their chosen candidate.

Gavin at Sadly, No gives us a what to watch for link with some needed corrections.  Barack Obama is the president of 21 white people, at least 15 of who are named after Transformers.  I’m really surprised Grimlock voted for McCain.

Do you have any traditions or superstitions you perform on election day?

I started staying up to watch Election Night returns in the 1976 election, when I was still too young to vote (yes, even back then I had no life).  I shall stay up tonight as well, having voted early so I don’t have to rush about after work to get to vote before the polls close.

Go Obama!  U-S-A!

Well, you jinxed it, Jesse.  Next year, you watch, there will be Election Day Sales and Take 20% Off With Your Polling Card!

The marketers are going to wonder how they could have missed it all these years.

Sorry to burst your bubbles, but consumerism has already crept into this. 7-11 has been running its election using coffee cups for weeks now, and Starbucks is offering a free cup of coffee to anyone who can prove that they voted today. Same goes for Ben & Jerry’s stores—a free cone between like 3:00 and 5:00 (they’re running an ad on Facebook). And so on.

Sorry, not a regular, so could someone explain the Transformers joke for me.

And the vets give me a nice little paper poppy when I contribute a dollar, and the folks at the blood bank give me cookies and a decal. What’s your point? Anything anyone can do to reward good behavior (like voting) in a way that doesn’t interfer with the basic process is a positive thing.
