Next entry: Why anti-choicers own the Republican Party Previous entry: Oh No You Didn’t

Hurricanes: Nature’s Al-Qaeda

Let’s just suck it up and admit that death and destruction are always net goods for Republicans.  As repetitive as this is, it bears pointing out just how excoriated Democrats would be if they were publicly salivating over the chance to appear “presidential” and “in charge” whenever disaster struck, and if Democrats were excited about the possibility of avoiding direct comparison with their Republican opponent.

It would be assailed as cowardly, simpering, opportunistic and even potentially treasonous, the final nail in the coffin for a party that’s sought to make every death in Iraq a political prop to boost their own political fortunes.  But they’re Republicans and they pulled this last time, so they need it.  Hop in line, patriots!

I was very relieved this morning to see that Gustav was downgraded to a Category 2 before it made landfall, so hopefully we’ll pull through without too much damage.

Assuming the newspaper-filled levees hold, of course.  We probably won’t know for a few more hours if they did.

I’m ok.  I’m running on a generator and a wireless card right now, so I’m kinda-sorta able to be online.

Gustav is here.  So far everything’s OK where I am, just a lot of tree branches down in the yard.  Looking out the window is scary.  The levees are holding for now, but one of the bigger canals is starting to overflow, at the rate of about a foot and a half per hour.  What scares me about all that is that New Orleans is north of here and just at the beginning.  We should be getting the (really huge) eye soon where I am.

I think Obama is waiting to point out all the failed policies and failure to put people first, and hopefully he will be talking about a hurricane scare and not a real disaster.  This isn’t the time to start that line, but there will come a time to ask why this wasn’t taken care of sooner, why people still in trailers, etc. I’m hoping it blows over with minimal destruction, because that is better for the people.

Opponax, greatskycat-speed to you and yours.
