I Has Tough Questions Too!

WFTV anchor Barbara West asks the hard questions of Joe Biden.  For instance, is Barack Obama a Marxist?  Isn’t he embarrassed that he encouraged ACORN to register the entire cast of 1977’s The Rescuers?  Why did he force that poor white girl in Pittsburgh to fake being mugged and disfigured by one of his black friends?

This reminds me of the tough question I had for Sarah Palin: suppose that a pregnant teenage mother was going to smother a baby, but the baby had in its hand the trigger to a bomb that would kill the fetus inside of the mother, but leave the mother otherwise okay.  Then, suppose you had a high powered rifle that you could shoot with 100% accuracy at either target, but you only had one bullet.  My question, Governor Palin: how do you make that polar bear pin such a stylish accessory?

This reportering thing really isn’t hard at all!

Power Line applauds West’s “tough questioning”, and Newsbusters celebrates the lack of “softball” questions.  Of course, West’s entire line of questioning was essentially the unrestrained id of the Corner run amok, revealing a basic truth about toughness - the reason that some questions are “tough” is because it’s fucking stupid.  Her questions were certainly hard to answer, in the same way that someone asking you how many pedophiles you want living in your neighborhood is also a “tough” question.

UPDATE: From comments, the same reporter’s interview of John McCain.  The questions she asks are just as tough as the ones she asks Joe Biden, by which I mean that they’re pretty much the same questions that she asks Joe Biden.

Wow.  Looks like someone’s trying to get noticed by Fox News.

I love Biden’s response at one point ... along the lines of, “Who the hell wrote these questions anyway??”

Comment #1: Joshua  on  10/26  at  03:38 AM

I loved Biden’s facial expressions during that interview.

Comment #2: chingona  on  10/26  at  03:49 AM

The same interviewer talked to Biden before and asked another “tough question” : what about those hot internet rumours you will soon be faking an illness to allow Hillary to take over the VP slot?

Its at 5:00 in http://www.wftv.com/video/17567041/index.html

So yeah, I think we can safely say Barbara West has been pallin’ around with Freepers.

Comment #3: Amanda  on  10/26  at  03:56 AM

And this is why I have difficulty arguing against my dad. He’s bought this “Obama’s a socialist” BS. He thinks Obama’s tax plans will make rich businesses defiantly raise prices, etc. But pointing out this sheer idiocy without saying “WTF, do you honestly believe that?” can prove hard to do. Oh, and he likes Palin. He’s not voting, though, FWIW.

Ugh. I can’t help but wonder if it’s worth the effort to get him to see the light. I want to believe he’s capable of reason and just heard the wrong view one too many times, but we’ll see, I s’pose.

Comment #4: Margaret  on  10/26  at  04:13 AM

dude, Joe Biden’s much better at keeping a straight face than I am.  “SWEDEN?  SRSLY?”

Comment #5: Ferox  on  10/26  at  04:19 AM

Don’t eat the brown acid, Barbara.

Comment #6: Mark B  on  10/26  at  04:25 AM

Shouldn’t that be WTF-TV?

Here’s a thought: how about having the surrogates for the Obama campaign carrying around a chart showing what the marginal tax rates have been in this country since 1900.  I believe, at one point, it was up around 90% for the top income earners.  That, my friends, is socialism we can believe in.

Comment #7: commie atheist  on  10/26  at  04:38 AM

And, as usual, the comments at ScrewyTube are pretty much all far-far-far-far-right doucheholes screaming “OMGZROZ GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG CAN’T DRINK TEH KOOL-AID FAST ENOUGH”.  They consider someone asking this kind of bullshit “real integrity” and whine about “OMGZ LIBROOL MEDYA IN TEH TANKZ FOR BAMATERRIST!!!1”.

God, how I wish I could punch people in the face over standard TCP/IP.

Comment #8: Damian  on  10/26  at  04:43 AM

Just so you know, the ad I am getting below this post is “surprise her with a bigger penis, take these pills”.

I suppose she could “surprise” you right back by kneeing you in the nuts, but I’m guessing that’s not what the ad is going for.

Comment #9: Katherine  on  10/26  at  05:50 AM

Got as far as the bit about “Acorn’s blatant attempts to register phony voters” and got the eff out of that stupidfest.

Was pretty disappointed that Biden’s response wasn’t “Hey, that didn’t happen and you’re fucking stupid.”

Comment #10: dan  on  10/26  at  06:27 AM

Barbara West was just as tough on John McCain. Check out her tough, tough questions. The first one is especially, um, tough.

Ask Sarah if two kids should be forced to get married because they had sex and the girl got knocked up.  Ask Sarah if being in love is important before you get married.
Why do only the knocked up ones have to get married when they don’t love each other or are not ready to get married?
  Is it God’s will?

Comment #12: ThingsComeUndone  on  10/26  at  08:16 AM

“Ask Sarah if being in love is important before you get married.”

Love?

There’s the love a fundnut has for The Fetus.

And there’s the love fundies have for proper Reichwing authority.

And we can’t forget the love the Reichwing has for hating anything “liberal”.

But what does love have to do with marriage?...

Just so you know, the ad I am getting below this post is “surprise her with a bigger penis, take these pills”.

The ad I got is “Ask a Lawyer Online Now”—which may be what the news director at WFTV is doing this weekend in regard to West’s contract.

I know it’s a local Florida station, but it’s still owned by Cox Television rather than some right-wing car salesman type. That means there are some (very) basic journalistic standards in place that can only be violated by sleeping with a station executive.

I worked with some screwy on-air talent, and anchors who had rather extreme personal political views. But both were professional enough (or fond enough of their big salaries) to keep teh crazy off the air. So, y’know, wow.

Comment #14: Gracchus  on  10/26  at  10:07 AM

And a new right-wing star is born.

She’ll be following in Joe the Plumber’s footsteps soon and doing a bus tour of Florida.

Damian—

Get Firefox.  There’s an add-on for YouTube comments that automatically blocks ones that aren’t properly capitalized, have too many misspellings, have ALL CAPS, too many punctuation marks, etc.

It makes You Tubing so much nicer.  For the crazy clips, it cuts the comments down to almost nothing.

Hey!  She practically answered that one the other day.  Chicago Sun-Times reported that Bristol isn’t really putting off her wedding until the summer or until after she has the baby.  She was simply waiting for her 18th birthday.

“That’s what we wanted her to wait for: to turn 18, and a decision on her own about how she’s going to go forward, her and Levi, at this point.”

Cause that really gives it the look of legitimacy—Bristol’s 18; she’s an adult, she’s marrying of her own free will or Mommy and Daddy are going to kick her pregnant ass to the curb.

Really? I read it more as, “We figure if we wait long enough the media will forget about us, and then I won’t have to ruin my kid’s life for PR reasons. ‘Course if McCain WINS, then we have plausible ‘she’s an adult!’ deniability.”

I don’t think Sarracuda is ruining Bristol’s life just for short-term PR reasons.  She’s doing it for long-term PR reasons, like maintaining a shot at 2012…

Comment #18: MikeEss  on  10/26  at  01:10 PM

“Is this a joke?”

It’s about time a candidate had the balls to say that out loud.

Comment #19: Rockit  on  10/26  at  01:48 PM

“Are you joking?  Is this a joke?  Or is that a real question?

Good for Joe… he exposed this mockery of an interview for what it was.  Apparantly the Obama Campaign decided after that attempted hatchet job to cancel a scheduled interview by the same reporter with Jill Biden, and the Freepers are screaming outrage now.

Seriously… could this hack be more blatantly gunning for a job with Fox News or what?  And surprise, surprise, Fox News is running with this story now, lauding Ms. West for her “tough questions”.

Comment #20: DTG in STL  on  10/26  at  02:48 PM

That’s what we wanted her to wait for: to turn 18,

This line from Sarah Palin just drives me nuts due to its complete separation from reality.

Bristol is pregnant, but they want her to wait to have the ceremony until she is 18?  THAT’S their big concern?  That she be 18?

Because, really, at this point, what does being 18 change?  Seriously, my friends.  What the fuck is the big deal about her being 18?

Either Sarracuda has pressured her to get married quicker, and is claiming the delay was just till she was 18 is the excuse, or she wants some sort of extra-feminist credit and holier-than-thou mojo for having a daughter who “freely” chooses to ‘do the right thing’ and marry the father and have the bay-bee.

1971 Tax Rate for Highest Earners = 70%

1985 Tax Rate for Highest Earners = 50%

2008 Tax Rate for Highest Earners = 35%

Obama Proposed Tax Rate for Highest Earners = 39%

Bristol Palin is due to have the baby in December… if she puts off the wedding until next spring or summer, she will be the mother of a heathen bastard child.  And will fry in hell.

Or something.

OK, I managed to watch that video.  I was a little scared of the burning stupidity, but it was worth it for Biden.

Sweden?  We’re afraid of becoming a socialist country like Sweden?  They’re a parliamentary democracy, a member of the EU, and our allies.  They’ve got educational, teen pregnant, and infant mortality rates that put us to shame.  I wish we were a socialist country like Sweden.

And trying to equate Karl Marx himself with Obama?  Repeatedly?  I loved how Biden just stopped talking at the end.  “The only people I have ever heard say something like that were the far right fringe element.”  And he left it there.

Once Baba West looked like she realized she’d been pwned, but otherwise her conviction that she was a tough reporter was amazing.

Comment #24: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  10/26  at  04:08 PM

They are bitching on faux news and saying that the fact that Biden called her on her bull is a sign of the great fascist dictatorship that is at hand if Obama wins.

I rearely watch fox news and I know how bad they are, yet it still manages to blindside me every time.  I mean SERIOUSLY?  Objecting to a dishonest and bad faith line of questioning makes you a fascist?  Really?

Comment #25: GumbyAnne  on  10/26  at  04:09 PM

Caren, I actually HAVE Firefox, and I used to have that add-on.  Problem is, it doesn’t block stupid, just annoying.  Plus I still think what it needs is a filter for People Who Capitalize Every Word In Their Comment So People Will Look At Them.

Comment #26: Damian  on  10/26  at  04:49 PM

dtg,
Thats what drives me nuts, did you happen to come across the marginal tax rate during WW2? Late 40’s? 50’s? We are pretty damn far away from the “socialism” many on the extreme right are afraid of. What I dont get is when taxes were higher and the wealth gap was at it’s smallest margin last century, that was also the time of a lot of growth and also tons of gov’t spending, at the same time. That was in the 50’s and early 60’s, the time period a lot of these right-wingers would like to go back to. If they love that era so much, why not also love a minimal wealth gap and real wages for laborers increasing every year?

Comment #27: dananddanica  on  10/26  at  06:08 PM

I LOVE this!  If you love that era so much, why don’t you want to pay the taxes from that era that made it possible?

Of course, then I devolve into the goofy…

If you love that era so much, why do you have a plasma screen tv?

If you love that era so much, why are you on the internet!?eleventy-one

etc.

Comment #28: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  10/26  at  08:25 PM

I think you need a court order in Alaska to get married before 18.  Many states have been seriously tightening up their marriage age standards and taking out the parental permission aspects since that wackjob in Indiana(?) married a 13 year old girl in another state and then brought her back and was arrested or something of that sort.  I think it highlighted the potential exploitation, where pedophiles could “trade” daughters and do it legally.

Ick.

Anyway, Bristol Palin being 18 simplifies things massively.

Comment #29: Ms Kate  on  10/26  at  11:38 PM

Those are questions the right wing are raising, so it would seen a good opportunity to knock them out of the park as Biden did.  Cancelling scheduled interviews as retaliation is petty, like McCain’s cancelling out on softballer Larry King because Campbell Brown had the temerity to question stupid talking points (Palin’s being governor gave her military command experience).

Comment #30: MiddleageLiberal  on  10/27  at  01:20 PM

Does that lady have eyes, or just two empty black sockets?

Have networks finally cast aside the practice of hiring plastic people for their anchors and now recruit directly from the ranks of the undead?
