Next entry: Up or down vote Previous entry: Limbaugh calls health care reform “reparations” and “civil rights”

It’s A New Day In Gay America

If you’re conservative, you apparently get to have a conference that the John Birch Society cosponsors, features metaphorical monkey balloons and which sizable portions of the conservative movement tries to write off because said conference endorsed Ron Paul’s Love Balloon for President of the United States of Gold, but which is also a great step forward for equality in the conservative movement because a giant homophobic asshole was booed by some and cheered by others.

Here’s the video, if you haven’t seen it:

(Also note that the speaker before him, who praised the American Conservative for inviting “GOPride” [sic], er, got booed, too.)
There are two problems with the portrayal of this as a “watershed” moment.  The first is on ready display in the video itself, as well as the comments to the post.  There are people booing, yes - but there are also people clapping.  (Not to mention the people just looking around going, “What the fuck is this?”)  When you read through the comments - if you dare - you’ll find a ton of people arguing from a rather cemented religious perspective that homosexuality is, you guessed it, a grave moral sin worthy of hatred. The second problem is this: does this actually mean anything?  The debate surrounding GOProud and surrounding that rather lovely tirade above was about whether gay-friendly groups should even be allowed to share the same space with other conservatives; the fact that part of the room booed his “reproductive end” schtick does not a gay-positive agenda make.  The “milestone” that was reached here is that the various assholes in the conservative movement who spend most of their time obsessed with whether or not gay men want to have sex with their butts can now get booed in pasty, white, sexually repressed company, so long as the booers are willing to pay several hundred dollars a person for the privilege. To all those conservatives claiming this as a milestone: what will you do now?  What’ll change about the conservative agenda?  Now that gays and lesbians have gained full acceptance into the muted ballroom of conservative principles, what activism are these newly tolerant, fired-up conservatives going to engage in?  After all, Tea Partiers are protesting tax hikes that didn’t happen, it would be super fun to see what they could do with problems that actually existed.

Give Ryan Sorba a break.  He’s never had oral sex, obviously, and he’s upset about it.  I would be too.

What kills me is that every time they move—-in any way—-towards liberal values, they applaud themselves for essentially conceding the argument while not admitting that’s what they did.  I fail to see why applauding yourself for being a bunch of lying shit stains is such a reasonable thing to do.

“What kills me is that every time they move—-in any way—-towards liberal values”

as is inevitable.

That right there is the crux as to why conservatism is the inferior belief system. History moves forward, not backward. On the road of civilization’s evolution, to be a conservative is to be little more than a speedbump.

Comment #3: kaje  on  02/24  at  11:17 AM

There are two things they might do -

1.  Shift their objection to Teh Gayz from a religious to a “health” viewpoint exclusively, dropping the “Bible says it’s a sin” rhetoric, and staying with “OMG!  TeH AIDS!eleventy!!”.

2.  Accept gays and claim that it’s the liberals who are homophobic because they keep talking about how gays aren’t allowed to do stuff.

I’m guessing #1.  They may claim they’re accepting gays, but they’ve claimed an awful lot of things that, upon further investigation, turn out to be rank lies.

To be fair, the homophobic wing of the party is likely not applauding this at all.  The “we just want to get elected” wing will spend the next three weeks explaining why this is excellent news for John McCain’s Presidential run.  And the libertarian/glibertarian “tell me what I want to hear” crowd isn’t applauding gay rights nearly so much as they’re applauding how “the man” has been stuck it too.

In that sense, this has absolutely nothing to do with gays and everything to do with the anarchist/theocratic split in the party.  Gays are just being pushed out at the conflict du jour, and once this fad fades, the GOP will get back to disingenuous arguments about government spending and foreign wars.

The bottom line is that CPAC doesn’t influence policy any more than a pack of cheer leaders influence the coach’s play calls.  This is all sound and fury, signifying nothing.

So are the boos genuine disapproval, or are the “Oh, shit, this is on video, here we go again”?

Comment #6: paul  on  02/24  at  12:27 PM

I’m glad you wrote this.  Too many are acting like this is a defining moment for the future, when it was possibly a unique thing, a mixed thing, or “it does not mean what you think it means.”

Zifnab, as an anarchist, I am offended by your insinuation that Republicans have anything to do with us. You’ve got violent separatists and “I got mine” libertarians.  Granted, anarchists should probably call themselves “anti-authoritarians” to better define their beliefs, but it doesn’t roll off the tongue and threatens to choke the speaker.

Comment #7: Jake  on  02/24  at  12:27 PM

The financial wing of the GOP has always been more or less unconcerned by homosexuality.  Their issues are class-based on economics rather than religion and so mostly against poor GLBT folks because they are against what might give the poor a shot at moving up and not the rich GLBT folks because they are for whatever helps the rich.

They’ve been doing this for a long time. Higher suicide rates among gay teens: It’s because they’re gay and we need to get them to be straight.  Higher levels of depression: it’s because they’re gay.  They’ve been going this bullshit for years (along with the exploitation of myths of gay affluence)

Although their nonsensical “morality” is still central, they’re also trying to bring in other issues…but it’s always about blaming and hating queers.

Comment #9: MAJeff, the God of Biscuits  on  02/24  at  12:42 PM

I never can tell when the crowd is booing the speaker or who he’s talking about. Maybe they just boo when they hear the word ‘gay’.

Comment #10: Stephanie  on  02/24  at  01:12 PM

I vote for “Boo! You’re making us look bad!” over “Boo! I believe in the inalienable civil rights of gay Americans!”

Comment #11: norbizness  on  02/24  at  01:42 PM

OK, slightly OT, but ThinkProgress is reporting that the new Miss Beverly Hills 2010, Lauren Ashley, who is taking over for Carrie Prejean just went on record with the following:

“The Bible says that marriage is between a man and a woman. In Leviticus it says, ‘If man lies with mankind as he would lie with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death and their blood shall be upon them.’ The Bible is pretty black and white,” Ashley told Pop Tarts.

“I feel like God himself created mankind and he loves everyone, and he has the best for everyone. If he says that having sex with someone of your same gender is going to bring death upon you, that’s a pretty stern warning, and he knows more than we do about life.”

She has lots of gay friends, though.

Majeff@9:

Yes, they have, which gives them a perfect fall-back to drop the religious schtick, but keep the hatery front and center on the Gayz to appease both the hard-righters and the “uh-oh, religion scary!” moderates.  It’s about public health, dontch’a know.  *eye*roll*

“we are neo-Con progressive, we don’t think Gay is a sin nomore, but it’s still catching and bad for societeeeeeeee!”

...I bet opening your mouth and vomiting that out at a party with your “gay friends” makes for a pretty awkward moment…

Comment #14: MikeEss  on  02/24  at  01:56 PM

I’m glad the guy got booed, but the crowd started booing him from the moment he stood up, so I don’t think they were booing his homophobic comments as much as the man himself.  Which is understandable, since he’s an Internet Tough Guy known for throwing tantrums and threatening violence against anyone, liberal or conservative, who tries to argue with him.  Recently he’s made a name for himself by making hate-filled anti-gay speeches at colleges and reveling in the negative media attention like a dog rolling in its own poo.  He’s a Fred Phelps in the making.  Even the people at CPAC realize a nutjob like this makes them look bad.

That video creeps me out.  Dude’s got the crazy eyes.

Comment #15: Shaenon  on  02/24  at  02:31 PM

Oh, and the fact that there were also people in the audience clapping is terrifying.

Comment #16: Shaenon  on  02/24  at  02:32 PM

It isn’t a watershed moment, but it was still a good thing. Not every sign of progress is earth-shattering. At the height of the Bush/Rove ascendancy, we certainly didn’t see booing for much more egregious anti-gay rhetoric.

No, this doesn’t constitute a reason to vote Republican, but it is a sign for cautious hope that progress is, well, in progress.

Dude, you might want to look up the definition of anarchy again.

That whole no-tax / no government services / privatize everything / social Darwinist / fuck-the-poor mentality?  The one where a handful of ultra-rich plutocrats bribe or intimidate to meet their desires and everyone else gets to suck it?  Lord of the Flies style government?  That’s the GOP dream.

Comment #18: Zifnab  on  02/24  at  03:04 PM

Hold on there, Conservatives don’t protest things that actually happen. That’s reality based liberal nonsense. They’re opposed only to hypothetical changes to the status quo. This is what makes them revolutionary, just like Sam Adams. That and drinking beer, brewed by Sam Adams. Patriotism!

Comment #19: Keith  on  02/24  at  03:35 PM

In Leviticus it says blah blah blah

So Ms Ashley, about those silk tops with just a touch of lycra you’ve been wearing. And the lobster sashimi. I’m sorry, but we’re going to have to sell you into slavery now.

G*d how I hate these cafeteria christianists.

Comment #20: paul  on  02/24  at  03:54 PM

In Leviticus it says a great deal of things.  Turns out if you’re a catholic or christian that whole section DOESN’T APPLY TO YOU.  When will people realize that the crux of Christianity is the second pact that with Jesus that replaced the 10 commandments and Leviticus.  The whole argument these people make is that they’re secretly orthodox Jews who follow the old testament down to the letter.  Sadly I’m insulting orthodox Jews with that remark.

In general they realize that the anti-gay argument is the racism argument.  Eventually they’ll take the plank out, keep the secret resentment, and allow the civil rights that we owe gay citizens to pass but complain loudly about it.  The religious right is pulling away from the Tea Party right, they think they can create private theocracies, so goes their thought process.  This is a step in the right direction though hopefully.

Comment #21: Xeranar  on  02/24  at  04:12 PM

People who worship christ (“christians”) should be completely ignoring the old testament. Christ was the bringer of the “new covenant” between god & humans. As long as you believe in him (christ) & have him as your savior, NONE of that other shit matters anymore. AT ALL. All that shit god said in the old testament does not apply any longer. Why its even still a part of the christain bible is a mystery to me. All that should matter to christians are christ’s teachings.

Sorry X.

Missed your post. :(

Comment #23: Mark  on  02/24  at  05:54 PM

To be fair, iirc homosexuality is also condemned in the New Testament at least a couple of times (usually in a big list of other sins that damn you)...

Comment #24: Devonian  on  02/24  at  08:32 PM

I really feel bad for gays and lesbians who lean conservative… outcasts from their own party. They may agitate for tax cuts, limited government and union-busting till the cows come home, but they will still always be considered The Enemy by their own side because they dared to love people of their own gender.

Of course, they might not feel at home among us either, with our tree-hugging, soak-the-rich ways. They really have nowhere to turn.

Sorry X.

Missed your post. :(

Sometimes I feel like I’m all alone on this branch of Catholicism.  It just reminds me that I’m not alone and that we can still be religious, non-religious, spiritual, or whatever you want to call it and not be a bigot.

The whole reason we as Catholics and Christians kept the old testament was because it makes for good society building when you take the basic principles.  Too bad the religious leadership decided in the middle ages to keep the misogynistic things in.  So now we need to unravel this crap with 21st century sensibility.

Comment #26: Xeranar  on  02/25  at  02:37 AM

@24

It is a couple of times…by Paul, who never claimed to be speaking on behalf of the lord and whose letters were mostly historical oddities about one man’s idea of what Christianity should look like.

A historical ignorance of reading comprehension and an over-reliance on scriptural quoting over scriptural understanding over Christianity’s history later and Paul is quoted constantly as if anything he says came straight from Jesus’s mouth.

So even if you give them credit and work from their holy book, they still got nothing. Also, there isn’t a single verse in the Bible against lesbians, though I’m sure the Conservative Bible Project will fix that.

Comment #27: Cerberus  on  02/25  at  04:11 AM

Zifnab…it is you who should probably look up what anarchism is…start with Kropotkin, Parsons, Goldman, Malatesta, and Durruti….and then explain how you think that tradition has anything to do with social darwinism or a fuck the poor mentality.
