It’s The Biggest Day In The World

ScienceSports

imageOhio State vs. Michigan today.  (I’ve been in law school long enough that I initially wrote that Ohio State v. Michigan, Jesus.)

I do have to give Michigan credit - there’s an anti-global climate change initiative called Stop the Buckeye focused on stopping the climate changes that are bringing the buckeye north into the Wolverine State.  If Ohio State’s repeated domination of Michigan brings about other needed policy changes, I, for one, cannot dispute the absolute necessity of such victories.

Prediction: Ohio State 34, Michigan 10.  Michigan goes up 10-7 in the first half, and as they’ve done all season, they then shut down and crumple up in a shameful, useless ball.

You know, I’d rather lose at rugby than win at American “football.” Seriously, what’s with all the pads?

Comment #1: Andrew  on  11/22  at  10:24 AM

And, depending on where the case was, you would have been wrong.  “State” would be redundant in some courts.

Comment #2: Antigone  on  11/22  at  10:56 AM

34-10 sounds plausible, but I think it’ll be closer to 27-14.  These rivalry games always make the teams play with greater heart because they’re playing for the honor of the school and their legacy.  I attend the Florida Classic every year (between Florida A&M;and Bethune-Cookman; I got my ticket back in July) and while the actual game may not be much to look at (FAMU lost last year 34-7) both teams play hard.

Comment #3: The Wanderer  on  11/22  at  11:10 AM

As a Michigan State fan, I’m hoping both teams both come down with a minor but irritating rash, and are unable to play.

Jesse, I don’t know how I did not realize you were in law school?  What year?  Cutting to the chase: got a decent Admin Law outline you’d be willing to trade? smile I have a kickass Wills & Trusts to offer, and a really good Sales & Leases (or Advanced Contracts, if that’s what your school calls it).  Admin is just doing a mental bodyslam on me right now.

Serious proposition!

Laura-

Sounds like you’re at least a 2L.  Have any outlines from 1L?  My torts final is on the 4th, and I’m stressing really badly.

Comment #7: Antigone  on  11/22  at  01:03 PM

Antigone - let’s you and me talk (I’m taking Torts this semester).

Laura - unfortunately, I’m a first semester 1L.  I’ll trade you my Admin Law outline, but it’ll read “Admin Law is law about administration”, followed by pictures of puppies.

Comment #8: Jesse Taylor  on  11/22  at  01:20 PM

This is his first year at UM Law, the august institution from which Ann Coulter and I both graduated.  I still have my notes from my first year classes, somewhere, although 1975 was a long time ago . . .

Comment #9: rea  on  11/22  at  01:32 PM

I don’t necessarily care about football, but this year, I’m hoping that Michigan at least plays respectably.

Freshman tight end Kevin Koger is my neighbor, I’ve known the kid since he was in fourth grade.  I’d hate to see him come home for Thanksgiving feeling like they played like ass.

Comment #10: Maggie  on  11/22  at  01:35 PM

Sheridan’s running the offense today.  If the Sheridan of the Minnesota game shows up, the game will be closer to The Wanderer’s prediction.  If the Sheridan of the Northwestern game (the Sheridan we’ve usually seen this year) plays, the game will be closer to yours.

Comment #11: Linnaeus  on  11/22  at  01:36 PM

Jesse and Anti:

I’m actually a second semester 3L (mid-year grad! Four more weeks to go! Halle-fucking-LU-jah, you have no idea.  Well, maybe you do.)

I suffered a fatal laptop crash somewhere in the middle of my second year, which wiped out my 1L material entirely.  However, I’ve been doing a barbri bar review review course this semester (yeah, that’s right: a review for the bar review course), which included a decent overview of negligence.  If either of you are interested in my barbri torts notes, send me email addresses and I’ll pass along.

I do appreciate barbri’s cut-to-the-chase approach (“no really, guys: here’s the black letter. We appreciate your thousands of dollars enough to not sadistically hide the ball from you in perpetuity.”).

PS: stoked to hear that you’ll be joining the profession, Mr. Taylor! We need more of youse. And how.

You know, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone make that comment before. So pithy and insightful.

First of all, rugby - which I love - is not “played without pads”, contrary to popular belief. Many individual players do go without, yes, but both helmets (leather) and shoulder pads are legal.

Second of all, American football players just plain hit - and are hit - harder, more often, and in far greater numbers than rugby players. To deny that is to deny gravity.

Comment #15: Auguste  on  11/22  at  04:17 PM

To clarify what I meant there - There certainly have been rugby hits as hard as any American football hit; they’re much, much rarer, and therefore the percentages for rugby players are still kinder.

Not even close.  Today is the Brawl of the Wild!  Montana vs. Montana State.

Comment #17: DrDick  on  11/22  at  04:38 PM

42-7 Ohio State, with 8min in the final quarter.  For those not willing to sully themselves with ESPN.com.

This sounds like one of those games where Nebraska or Texas A&M;suck this year and the opposing team is out avenge their past humiliations.

Guess which conference my college plays . .

Thing is, there wasn’t much for Ohio State to avenge.  Jim Tressel’s 7-1 against U-M, and this is his fifth win in a row over my beloved alma mater, which has never been done before.  But this game is always a big game no matter what.

Well, we saw which Nick Sheridan showed up today.  U-M still would have lost, but the score should have been closer.  They didn’t take advantage of that first-quarter interception, and Sheridan failed to connect on two occasions in which the receivers had beaten man coverage and had no one in front of them.  And I wasn’t sure they were even going to get the touchdown from Minor after they got rolled back from OSU’s 1-yard line.  All of that tells you how tough a rebuilding year it’s been for U-M…they’ve never had a season like this in 129 years of football.

I’d take more pleasure from Michigan’s pain and suffering if my own team wasn’t coached by a loser douchenozzle.

Dan:

Things aren’t so bad for you now, being a Vandy alum and all; they are at least somewhat respectable in the SEC these days.

Try being an Eastern Michigan alum.  Yes, that OTHER school in Washtenaw County, down the street from the University of Michigan. We get no respect, and for good reason. We are usually in the cellar of the MAC conference. This year, we at least have an offense - but apparently no defense.

Today, EMU scored 52 points - and LOST THE GAME.  55-52.

Well, when I announced to my undergraduate friends that I was going off to UM for law school, one of them asked me, “But, won’t you miss football?”  But that was long ago and in another country, or at least, in Oklahoma . . .

Comment #25: rea  on  11/22  at  10:12 PM

shartheheretic : I hear ya.  I’m an alum of Ohio University,  much smaller (but older) than OSU but much less well known.

Dan,

Uh, the SEC is considered the best conference in football.  The Big 12 has looked good the past two years, but still… SEC.  And I don’t even like the SEC!

i live IN Columbus ON CAMPUS.
i hate football.

no, that doesn’t clarify. I HATE FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and they will NOT shut the fuck up outside.

oh, if only rent were reasonable someplace CLOSE to campus but not ON campus - the places that are as cheap as here are all like 30 minutes away from campus. i don’t like driving 30 minutes to class. sigh.

Outside of Florida and Alabama, the SEC sucks this year. Hard. Take away those two teams, and it’s the Pac-10 with fancier stadiums.

Comment #33: Dan, Grand High Emperor of Bananas Foster  on  11/23  at  03:13 AM

Dan, from which conference have the latest national champions come?  Kentucky lost to Vanderbilt this year :(  but UK did win, rather handily, all of its non-conference games.  UK is only 2-5 in the SEC, but lost only 17-14 to Alabama, the number one team in the nation, and by four points to Georgia.

Well, the . . . unusual architecture of your campus may have something to do with it:

Went to UM, have lived in the area for almost 30 years and have NEVER gone to a football game.  Until they play soccer in the big house I’m not going.

EMU has great women’s soccer btw

Dana:

That’s why I very specifically said “this year,” Dana. They don’t hand out extra-special bonus points this year for winning a championship last year.

If you want your champions decided the way they do in boxing, watch boxing. In every other sport in the world, last year doesn’t mean a damn thing.

“Almost” only counts in horseshoes and hand-grenades. UK would have beat both Bama and UGA if Cobb weren’t a panic-prone freshman who plays for Kentucky.

Rea,

It’s great, isn’t it?  When I tell people about the water tower, they think I’m kidding.  Until I show them the photos.

Dan,

Most of the analysts seem to think Vanderbilt is going in the right direction with their football program, and that this isn’t just an aberration. I guess we’ll see, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you. I fear there is no hope for EMU.

Well, I think Bobby Johnson is going to be coaching at Clemson next season, so I’m not going to bother getting excited.

Comment #39: Dan, Grand High Emperor of Bananas Foster  on  11/24  at  12:25 AM

Can’t we all get along? A fair few NCAAF teams are obviously taking training sessions with their varsity XVs: you’re seeing the kick to touch (aka ‘the rugby punt’) and the rugby pass (aka ‘the lateral’, done with good enough form to reach its intended recipient) enter the college repertoire, and it’s all good.

Comment #40: pseudonymous in nc  on  11/24  at  03:19 AM

Suck it ‘Doors! You too Wolverinos! The Vols are NOT the suckiest top flight team of the year! Even if we lose to UK next week we’re still better than Michigan (although that would leave Ohio State as the ONLY Div I/BCS team to never have lost more than 7 games in a season).

Um… woohoo?

Vandy can have <strike>the dumb redneck</strike> Fulmer if they need a coach.
