Jon Stewart on the inauguration, interview with Gene Robinson

Humor

Stewart’s comments about Dick Cheney (and the accompanying visuals) are hysterical. He also scorches Rick Warren quite nicely. Sorry, I don’t have a transcript.

Bishop Gene Robinson was on the show last night, but the above clip doesn’t include the interview. The segment with the interview is below the fold.
An exchange for the ages…

STEWART: Washington was, so, crowded today. There were so many people. You as a bishop were sort of doubly handicapped in that situation because you are only allowed to move diagonally. How is that negotiating the crowds.

ROBINSON: John, you have to understand there’s a queen on the board as well.

(Stewart loses it, laughing.)

Robinson goes on to say that he met the Rick Warren at the worship service before the ceremony and he “let him know that I was praying for him.” Stewart asked the Bishop whether his invitation was orchestrated to counter Warren’s appearance. Robinson said that he was going to be a part of this all along, and mentioned the fact that he had advised the Obama campaign during the election season on LGBT issues. Stewart also asked him about whether he thought he would see someone LGBT as president one day.

“I think for every gay or lesbian or bisexual or transgender person that dream for us is now in place, and all we have to do is the hard work to get there.”

The “there’s a queen on the board” was fantastic!

So freak’n priceless.  Never have I seen the shoe slipped so tactfully onto the other foot.

Bishop Gene has such a great sense of humor. There are so few people who can actually get John Stewart to completely lose it. It was so good to see him get a chance somewhere to speak out.
John had a great jab at HBO, mention that they probably cut him out for decency reasons because Robinson’s language is “salty.”

That was lovely, I almost cried.

This just confirms my feelings that Jon Stewart’s “comedy” show is a better and more reliable source of news than the MSM.

I wish when Jon Stewart got to trying to rhyme “Orange” they had cut away to John Boehner—that would have proved that there are, in fact, orange people.

This was full of so much win and awesome. Easily the best one-liner I’ve ever heard on an interview-based television program.

I was so happy to see Bishop Gene on that show, on that day, especially after the HBO snub. It was just too perfect.

“Did he pronounce Obama’s daughters’ names like he thought they were delicious?”

hahahahhaahahhhahaha

In my living room, there was much mockery of Rick Warren’s utter inability to muster an ounce of sincerity in his speech.

Who’d have ever thought they’d need to do an impression of Maya Angelou?

Y’know, I wasn’t so enthused about the Cheney bit, and Stewart’s disclaimer suggested he knew it was sorta kinda cheap. The wheelchair = evil thing was a bit uncomfortable. The Warren/Robinson stuff was delightful, though.

Oh, I dunno…The biggest laugh I got last night was when Dr. StrangeCheney’s wheelchair was suddenly and abruptly whisked offstage, and Stewart yelled, “Zoinks!”

The wheelchair = evil thing was a bit uncomfortable.

Stewart was pretty specifically referencing the Hollywood shorthand of villains in wheelchairs.  I’d call that entirely appropriate for Cheney, especially since he’s been playing that part non-visually for a while now.

Come on, Cheney looked like he was at a Mr. Potter impersonator convention tryout.

Comment #12: Neue Internetpräsenz  on  01/21  at  04:24 PM

heck ever I would say he look like a Mr. Potter impersonator. tongue laugh

We can’t have a gay president because the president is traditionally named an honorary Scoutmaster.

Anyway, there are rumors about James Buchanan.

That said, I think Warren really meant it when he talked about “treating human beings with the respect they deserve

Comment #14: Hershele Ostropoler  on  01/21  at  05:16 PM

After that bleating of insincerity by Warren, I dubbed him Pastor ShamWow.

Hey, I personally *always* treat people with the respect that I think they deserve. :D

Comment #16: Bagelsan  on  01/21  at  07:33 PM

You know the first thing that popped into my mind about Warren and the way he pronounced the Obama kids names was that scene in “The Lion King” with the jackals saying Mufasa’s name.

Think about it.
“Mu-FASSSA!”
‘oohhooohoohhoohooo, do that to me again’
“Mu-FASSSA!!!”

“saSHAAAA!!!!”
“maLEEEA!!!”

Comment #17: Dillo  on  01/21  at  09:35 PM

Still, the best show on television.

And cheers to the Bishop for a marvelous riposte.

Comment #18: ice weasel  on  01/21  at  10:36 PM

I see you spotted the loophole, Bagelsan. Rick Warren doesn’t think LGBT individuals deserve respect, and I’m not sure he realizes they’re human beings.

Comment #19: Hershele Ostropoler  on  01/22  at  12:54 AM

Which is ironic because Rick Warren isn’t a human being either.  He’s an anthropomorphic brown paper sack of shit.  We just need a lighter and we can leave him on Dick Cheney’s front porch.

Comment #20: Spooky Skeptic  on  01/22  at  01:24 AM

I’m starting to see the Warren pick in a new light. People who already like him will keep on liking him. People who have never heard of him will see him at the inaugural and think “Who the fuck was that asshole?”

Gene Robinson is awesome. Total class act. Humane, sincere, self-deprecating but also self-respecting, witty. Every time I hear him give an interview I’m impressed. Have I mentioned how much I love Gene Robinson?

Comment #21: chingona  on  01/22  at  03:02 AM

Spooky Skeptic, I’m going to have that visual in my head tonight when I go to sleep, complete with Cheney screaming, “Get off my lawn! You damn kids!” Though it is not quite as bad as the person who suggested in another thread over at Pam’s that Rick Warren is secretly a total bear and wouldn’t he look perfect in assless leather chaps. I threw up in my mouth a little. Yes, I WILL make you all suffer that with me.

Comment #22: Keori  on  01/22  at  04:14 AM

Pedantic note: Chaps are all assless. Chaps with asses are pants. However, moving on.
