If you look at the boston.com comments, some commenters mentioned that they knew this guy and that he was seriously neglected as a child and has learning disabilities that were never properly attended to.

Not surprising, but upsetting nonetheless as Brockton has and is a very diverse city and one of the places that sued the state for funding to level the playing field with wealthy communities when it came to education (MA has this fucked up local-based system of school funding and control).  Even so, my husband’s cousin’s widow had to fight fiercely to get help for her son’s obvious learning disabilities in the Brockton system - this guy didn’t have such an advocate for his future.

Take somebody with difficulties learning and understanding, deny him the help he needs to learn and understand, allow him to be neglected, and then give that low-functioning person a purpose and a scapegoat for his problems and see what happens.  I think the Christian Right Wing is heavily vested in making sure that there are plenty of such screwed up and messed up people to exploit and prey on, no?

Have you heard of snark or sarcasm, friend? Talk about a princess and the pea overreaction. However, given the long list of incidents involving McCain/Palin mobs during this election cycle, we know that disturbed, ignorant and armed people aren’t hard to find in this country.

Even if this guy was neglected and didn’t get the help he needed, he still turned to hate, he still decided to blame others for his problems, and he still resorted to horrifying violence.  Maybe giving him the help he needed would have stopped this and maybe not.  Are all white supremacists developmentally challenged?  It would be comforting to think so.

And when I say it’s funny, I really mean that it’s sad. I have to laugh at the absurdity of it all so I won’t go nuts.

Zinfab, this incident is an extreme edge of a broader situation.  It is a classic case of taking an impaired and marginalized person and telling him that he is superior to other marginalized people (and under assault by those people making gains when he is not).  That he became far more extreme about it and took up weapons and killed and raped makes him an extreme example, but not an isolated and solitary one. 

The same sort of thinking made lynchings possible: that no matter how beat down and impoverished and disempowered low-status whites were, they could still better than blacks, and could still go kill them.

There first thing I thought when I saw his picture and read his description (an “obese, white man who lived with his mother and frequently surfed through racial propaganda on the Internet”) was that one of Pandagon’s trolls isn’t taking the registration requirement very gracefully.

On a more serious note, Carlo Baca’s comment is spot-on. We’d better get used to more racist Know-Nothings acting out in one way or another as the fact of “President Obama” slowly sinks through their thick skulls.

In addition to the above, there is still a well of seething White working-class resentment dating back to the 1960’s over school busing and the perception that they were forced to attend crumbing schools with “scary violent Black students” while the middle and upper-class liberal Whites moved to the wealthy surrounding Boston suburbs with sufficiently high tax bases to support good public schools…..or the option to send their kids to private schools.  An ugly mix of racism and class resentment….

This resentment was quite apparent in 2000 when I did census work in South Boston and parts of Dorchester where racist attitudes among the White population there were apparent.

Similarly, the large number of pedophile arrests related to proeminent National Socialist Movement leaders (as well as other WP organizations) seems sort out of the blue, as it doesn’t seem that having sex with young boys or young girls should have anything to do with preserving the White race.

It’s not just the vulnerability of this population. White supremacist organizations also actively recruit teenage skinheads - juveniles. All of these populations - legal minors, the developmentally disabled and the mentally ill - can be persuaded to commit violent acts, and then face shortened prison sentences because they aren’t seen as responsible for their actions in the same way. The sound mind and body adults pulling their strings stay behind the scenes, never go to prison and keep recruiting new tools for violence.
