McCain/Palin mob: 30 cars owners find tires slashed after NC Obama rally; voters heckled

Sigh. This happened yesterday in Fayetteville yesterday. And only a couple of days before, a Greensboro reporter was kicked to the ground by another McCain/Palin patriot at a Bible Spice rally at Elon.

Someone slashed the tires of at least 30 vehicles parked outside the Crown Coliseum on Sunday during a rally for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, authorities said.

Sheriff’s deputies are investigating. The tires were cut while people were inside the Crown Coliseum listening to speeches, said Maj. E. Wright of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Sarah Revis, who lives on Wilkes Road, said the slashed tires left several women, including a single mother and a toddler, stranded and upset. At least four tow trucks were sent to move the vehicles from the Crown, Revis said. “This is an embarrassment to this city and to me as a citizen,” Revis said. “I’ve seen women out here crying and men cussing. This is a crying shame.”

Lynne Steenstra said she thought that the slashings were scare tactics designed to keep her and others from supporting Obama. Even though it cost her roughly $120 to get her Dodge Caravan towed and fixed, Steenstra said the act would not intimidate her from voting.

“It hasn’t deterred us one bit,” Steenstra said. “It has only encouraged us more. I just hope whoever did this pays the price.”

You know this wasn’t the work of one lone whack job. Unlike most of the recent McCain mobsters, these cretins are cowards who are unable to show their faces when they do their vile deeds.

UPDATE: More of The McCain Base—people heckling early voters in NC

An account of what happened after the Fayetteville rally when two members of the press (the Washington Times) went to a local early voting site.

Photographer Joe Eddins and I headed over to the closest one and found a steady line of voters hoping to cast ballots early. Most seemed to be Obama supporters and several had come from the rally. Nearly all the voters were black.

Also at the polling site was a group of loud and angry protesters who shouted and mocked the voters as they walked in. Nearly all were white.

As you can see from these videos, no one held anything back. People were shouting about Obama’s acknowledged cocaine use as a young man, abortion and one man used the word “terrorist.” They also were complaining that Sundays are for church, not voting.

And get a load of the reception Obama received from another high-class McCain/Palin supporter while the candidate was at Cape Fear BBQ and Chicken in Fayetteville. It’s below the fold.

The following is a compilation of pool reports from print, TV and wire reporters who accompanied Obama to the diner:

Obama arrived at the barbecue joint around 12:30 p.m., where an older and majority white clientele of several dozen were eating lunch after church services. Many patrons applauded as he walked into the diner, but Diane Fanning, 54, began yelling “Socialist, socialist, socialist — get out of here!” Obama did not look directly at her, as she was across the diner, but it was loud enough that he most likely heard her.

The gentleman next to Fanning, Lenox Bramble, 76, flashed an angry look at her. “Be civil, be courteous,” he admonished her. Another woman, Cecilia Hayslip, 61, yelled back at Fanning (per Reuters), “At least he’s not a warmonger!”

Bramble told Reuters’ pooler that he wasn’t voting for Obama because he didn’t think he had enough experience. Bramble’s wife, Kit, 75, said after meeting Obama, “He was very nice,” but added she’d been a conservative Republican since Barry Goldwater’s era and said she wouldn’t vote for Obama.

Fanning said she’d heard that former Secretary of State Colin Powell had endorsed Obama but said that “Colin Powell is a RINO, R-I-N-O, Republican In Name Only.”

Later, Obama came to the long table where Fanning and other members of a local First Presbyterian church were gathered. He held out his hand to her and asked, “How are you, ma’am?” but she declined to shake his hand.

How deranged are these sick people? Fanning went on to say that she still believes Obama is a “closet Muslim.”

Remember John McCain is proud of patriotic supporters like Fanning. He told us so in the last debate.

That’s the kind of thing that makes me respect and admire Obama.  McCain or Bush or Cheney would throw a fit.  Obama takes it in stride and goes on.  First class…

It looks to me, from the ages of the assholes in the restaurant, that time will solve this problem and sooner, rather than later.  In this case time is our friend.

Comment #2: ice weasel  on  10/20  at  03:52 PM

Mike, you’re being too nice. Any republican would have vetted the entire restaurant before entering and tossed anyone out who might express anything but love and loyalty for them.

“Any republican would have vetted the entire restaurant before entering and tossed anyone out who might express anything but love and loyalty for them.”

...unfortunately correct.  The way I see it, if you can’t speak in front of a non-preselected audience, you’ve failed even before you say a single word…

Comment #4: MikeEss  on  10/20  at  03:57 PM

G. told me an interesting study he read that said that many bullies consider themselves the guardians of the social order.  In non-political realms (like high school), bullies feel like it’s their job to enforce the social rules and prevent anyone from getting above themselves.

What’s interesting is that it’s a dynamic that’s difficult to see until something like the pink shirt incident happens in Canada, where the rest of the kids wore pink shirts in solidarity and the bully who’d picked the fight in the first place was almost in tears because he knew it was wrong for a boy to wear a pink shirt and no one would listen to him.

Bullies are the enforcers, and it drives them nuts when people ignore or contradict them.  I’m sure Fanning was fuming the rest of the afternoon because “her side” didn’t back her up when she tried to enforce what she thought was an obvious social rule.

That’s probably part of the reason so many trolls come here and accuse us of being deluded—they don’t get that the social rules they’re trying to enforce are (slowly) changing.

I missed the pink shirt story, Mnemosyne.  That’s totally awesome.  Also, excellent point about bullies and social order.

Comment #7: Blitzgal  on  10/20  at  04:08 PM

I hope someone asks McCain if he approves of these folks, too.

Comment #8: annejumps  on  10/20  at  04:12 PM

Yikes, that car was totally TRASHED.  And they made it very clear why they did it to, spray-painting Obama on the side and shoving yard signs into the car after they smashed the windows.  Completely nuts.

Comment #9: Blitzgal  on  10/20  at  04:14 PM

Okay, in the earlier thread about the woman who trashed an Obama sign, I made an attemp to say that some Obama supporters do similar things to McCain supporters.  But it seems like the McCain bullies far out number any Obama bullies.  And the McCain folks are a lot more violent.

Comment #10: Olivia  on  10/20  at  04:22 PM

Here’s a link to one of the original pink shirt stories, if anyone’s interested.

Comment #11: Mnemosyne  on  10/20  at  04:24 PM

Let me get this straight—the guy in that video thinks it’s cheating for the board of elections to allow early voting on a Sunday, when they were not originally intending to open the office on Sunday (if I’ve understood him correctly)?  Voting = cheating.  Mmkay.

Comment #12: Raging Red  on  10/20  at  04:24 PM

At least the Brambles showed some class.

My father would consider Miss Fanning to be a RINO, actually.  She isn’t of the Republican party he remembers being a member of.

Comment #13: Ms Kate  on  10/20  at  04:30 PM

A Texas woman’s car is violently vandalized because she had an Obama sticker.

Once again, somebody is making the foolish assumption that no Democrat or Obama supporter would pack heat.

Comment #14: Ms Kate  on  10/20  at  04:31 PM

Keep shouting, lunatics.  I know a few Republicans and “independents” who’d probably vote Obama if they got screamed at by McCain supporters on the way inside.

Comment #15: Nicole  on  10/20  at  04:44 PM

Once again, somebody is making the foolish assumption that no Democrat or Obama supporter would pack heat.

I can imagine how that would go down:

“BREAKING NEWS: TERRORIST LIBERAL SHOOTS AMERICAN IN COLD BLOOD WITH ABSOLUTELY NO PROVOCATION WHATSOEVER.”

And Repubs will feel vindicated; because hey, they just threaten people, heckle them, vandalize their cars and kick their dogs, but they never ever shoot people WITH ABSOLUTELY NO PROVOCATION WHATSOEVER.

Comment #16: kaje  on  10/20  at  05:18 PM

Keep shouting, lunatics.

You said it. Willing tying your party to a horde of insane, screaming, vandalizing, racist thugs is no way to grow your brand. Except with the very small subset of insane, screaming, vandalizing, racist thugs.

they never ever shoot people WITH ABSOLUTELY NO PROVOCATION WHATSOEVER.

“I didn’t shoot at that guy with no provocation! I shot at that guy because he was sending gay rays at me!”

Comment #17: Scott  on  10/20  at  05:23 PM

@kaje
Oh yeah, most definitely. And it would be played for decades and reported on with the type of media frenzy that the UU Church Shooting or Mosque Gas Attack weren’t. Cause only liberals hate.

Overall, though, yikes! I know I was too young for the last round of militia men under Clinton. Combine that with the bastard children of the “slavery forever” crowd and just yikes…I’m getting flashbacks of my American history class and the run-up to the Civil War. Worse because at least there the battlegrounds were at least outlined by state. Here we just have militia versus citizens everywhere. It’s leaking out here with these and the UU shooting. It’s only going to get worse as these people face the fact that no one cares what they think anymore.

It’s going to get ugly out there in the short term.

Comment #18: Cerberus  on  10/20  at  06:02 PM

Just goes to show you can’t trust white people in large groups. They just can’t handle themselves.

Comment #19: annejumps  on  10/20  at  06:35 PM

“I didn’t shoot at that guy with no provocation! I shot at that guy because he was sending gay rays at me!”

lol

And of course, conservatives don’t always use guns to kill their victims, but they often do.

Comment #20: Eric  on  10/20  at  06:52 PM

should’ve been that they don’t always shoot their victims.  Oh well.

Comment #21: Eric  on  10/20  at  06:54 PM

McCain’s campaign is looking to incite the dimwit segment of his base - the tire slashers, the shouters - they want these cretins to show up at polling places on election day in order to intimidate people.

I wonder how many people may be disinclined to go to the polls if they are concerned about being confronted by GOP stormtroopers? Might blunt the Obama tide in closely contested southern states like NC, VA, FL, GA.

Comment #22: CParis  on  10/20  at  07:13 PM

hey, you should watch this video on youtube called “Anyone Can Be VP”! it’s actually really funny!

Heckling voters? WTF? All in the service of Democracy (tm), of course!

Comment #24: Nenya  on  10/20  at  08:09 PM

Cocaine use in his youth? Are these people opponents of our current President?

Comment #25: mythago  on  10/20  at  08:11 PM

So, if Sundays are for church, not voting, then why are they out there protesting instead of being in Church? Logic is not strong with this crowd, is it? Although I’m sure to them heckling voters = god’s work somehow.

Comment #26: elena  on  10/20  at  08:25 PM

What an outrage!  Surely, it is a sign of the campaign’s desperation.

Usually to these people god’s work is handing out a chick tract instead of a tip at a restaurant.

“What an outrage!  Surely, it is a sign of the campaign’s desperation. [link]”

So…what?  Your theory, contrary to everyone else’s guess that it’s a small group of unhinged assholes with no real connection to the party aside from their intention to vote for McCain, is that it’s actual staffers?

Though I am kind of impressed how, according to that page, the plan to prank the Republicans with bumper stickers and yard signs (trespass/criminal mischief) was shelved in favor of slashing tires (felony destruction of property) due to the presence of a security guard.  I’d like to have been a fly on the wall during the conversation that led to that decision.

Comment #29: preying mantis  on  10/20  at  09:38 PM

Some of these folks live where I work. I have an Obama sign at home, I have an Obama button, but I canot risk anything happening to my car.

I hope the tire slashers are found and prosecuted.

But keep in mind if Obama wins in a close election these folks will be out in force

Comment #30: Bacopa  on  10/20  at  11:46 PM

It’s funny that Bismarck seems to find something wrong with tire-slashers being tried, convicted, and serving jail time.  Hoping the judge in your case will let you off easier, are you?

Kudos to both of them. More like this, please.

True.  It must have taken 3 or 4 whack jobs, at least.  Also, some vandals.  But before you throw the McCainiacs in jail, interrogate the tire dealers: Follow the Money.

There is discrimination here, too.  If this had happened in the Bronx it wouldn’t have made the news.

Comment #33: Fred  on  10/21  at  04:08 PM

The tire slashing actually seems to meet the definition of terrorism:
from U.S. Code Title 22, Ch.38, Para. 2656f(d):
“the term “terrorism” means premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents;”

Comment #34: CWD  on  10/21  at  04:18 PM

Opps - posted too soon
Here is the FBI definition of terrorism:
“The unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a Government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.”
