McCain/Palin Mob, Part 2: more aggressive ignorance

Tim Russo has part two of the McCain/Palin Mob in Strongsville, OH (part 1 here), where he interviews wingers outside of a Bible Spice rally, asking them the question “Do you think Barack Obama is a terrorist?” Tim:

This video includes a family who believes Barack Obama is a terrorist.  They brought an Obama doll, to show he’s a “puppet”, and when asked why, their small child says “you need gloves to touch him”. Bonus footage of 2 closeted gays - see if you can tell which ones!

Bottom line - I have never seen such a dangerous group of people at a presidential rally, so willing to announce their views to a guy holding a camera, and so transparently up to no good.  These people are very easily incited, as we have seen, and they need to be exposed.

In particular, a woman, who teaches her own child, that the next president of the United States is so vile that “you need gloves to touch him” needs to be put on video, and see how her views look in the light of day.  I don’t know how anyone can teach their own child this level of hate.

These people are

boldly ignorant

.

Some select quotes in response to “Do you think Barack Obama is a terrorist?”:
Woman 1: “He’s a domestic terrorist.”
Tim: “So why did John McCain stand onstage with him?”
Woman 1: “Because he’s an honest, good man.”

Woman 2: “Sarah [Palin] is a normal woman.”
Tim: “and Barack is…?”
Woman 2: “He’s a politician, a seasoned politician.”
Tim: “That doesn’t make him normal?”
Woman 2: “No…no…how many politicians are there versus normal people?
Tim: “Sarah’s one.”
Woman 2: “She’s a politician but she’s more on the normal side.”
Woman 3: “SHE’S A WOMAN!!”

***

Tim: “How long have you known Sarah Palin?”
Woman 4 (carrying a Barack Obama doll/puppet): “All my life.”

A man next to her is carrying a sign that says “NObama, my Grandma said, “You are the company you keep.” Tim asks “what company are you referring to.” The man says: “the likes of guys like Bill Ayers.”

***

Man #2: “I think he’s a Communist and a Marxist…I think he was indoctrinated by the teachings of his father.”
Tim: “You know he only saw his father twice in his entire life.”
Man #2: “The teachings of his father…not personally.”

Another video of conservative crazies spewing bile is after the jump.
And look at this dude at a Waukesha, Wisconsin town hall, spurred on by fellow—ahem—enthusiastic McCainiacs shouting “USA, USA” really lost it. What will they do if Obama wins?

Right wing nutcase to McCain: “When you have an Obama, Pelosi and the rest of the hooligans up there gonna run this country we got to have our heads examined. It’s time that you two are representing us and we ARE MAD.”

I’m beginning to think that these clips of the crazies are of the up-till-now hidden Freepi. I think those folks are so desperate and angry that they are showing their faces in public for the first time. Scary people.

This is how America dies — not with a bang , but whimpering under a massive putrid pile of our own self-imposed ignorance and hate…

Comment #1: MikeEss  on  10/10  at  09:51 AM

I’d be scared to go out there and film these people. These are people looking for an excuse to run riot and kill “undesirables.”

Comment #2: Scott  on  10/10  at  10:21 AM

Rambling anecdote time:

I recently had an email run-in with the only True Fox News Libertarian (But Non Christian) Conservative in our extended family—my wife’s mother’s second husband.  She was staying with us for a few days, and he’d been emailing dumb links to my wife for a while.

Well, we’ve survived family visits by simply not talking politics.  This was the state of affairs for years, and while I’d been curious about what they though about the world, it never quite surfaced except in weird passive aggressive moments.

This time around, we finally opened that can of worms through email when Greg (that’s the second husband) sent us one of those YouTube videos blaming Obama and the Democrats for the housing crisis.

I’d had hope that he was rational enough for civil conversation, but I knew that he’d turn troll pretty quickly.  It actually happened after only one back and forth exchange.  I said there needed to be ground rules to avoid flame war, after he basically accused us of hating the military when nothing could be farther from the truth.

His immediate reply was “you don’t get make ground rules when you talk to me.”

So I set the ground rules by saying no more emails.  Since then, my wife’s mom agreed that we should go back to never discussing politics.

It was very dismaying to see the extent to which Greg was willing to never blame Republicans for literally ANYTHING bad over the last 30 years.  And how quickly he became belligerent.  These videos of Palin rallies are utterly depressing and terrifying to me—I just can’t believe sensible human beings can act like this in public.

Comment #3: Dr. Locrian  on  10/10  at  10:22 AM

I have yet to hear any Republican take the blame for anything. They have been in charge but it is the dems? These videos are truly disturbing and I know they do not show the mindset of most Americans, however, they do peak into the behavior of those getting worked up in ball of hate at these campaign events.

Comment #4: Mac G  on  10/10  at  10:36 AM

I don’t know if I can keep watching those McCain-Palin Mob videos.  The hatred and ignorance.  The GLEEFUL hatred and ignorance.

I grew up in Indianapolis, around that sort of thing.  I’m never ever ever going back there.

“You need gloves to touch him.”

I mean, seriously my friends, what the fuck is wrong with those people?  They are media savvy enough not to want to be ‘got’ with a soundbite, but they are pissed off enough to want to scream at the world that wants to elect a Democratic black man.  Whom you shouldn’t touch unless you are wearing gloves.

Reminds me of the end of the debate when McCain tapped Obama on the shoulder, but shunned shaking his hand.

I know he’s trying to show that he’s just disgusted with his opponent, but can there be any possible way he is ignorant of what it looks like for a white man to refuse to shake a black man’s hand?  Or how gracious a black man can be by just continuing on and ignoring the insult?

Especially after calling him “that one”.

Palin and McCain are just feeding chum into the already bloodied waters. This sort of ignorance has been on display for a long time now. I am amazed that anyone is actually surprised or shocked to see people acting like this. This IS America. Where has everyone been?

I’m sorry, you want to talk about teaching blatant hate? How about Michael Moore and the whole “stupid white men” bullshit? Take what you dish out; there’s plenty more to come. You want to talk about gleeful hate and ignorance? How about ignorance of the sound foundation that our founding fathers gave us, slavery or no, “Native Americans” or no? The same foundation the Leftists willfully run into the ground at every conceivable opportunity? You want us to be what, as gentle and caring as the Black Panthers? Wake up.

Comment #7: Sugar Ray Republican  on  10/10  at  10:43 AM

Why does Fox have a box up with Ayers’ photo and the caption “domestic terrorist”?  Is that relevant to anything during the story, or do they just leave it up there all the time?

Comment #8: Amanduh  on  10/10  at  10:45 AM

Caren, I agree with you.  But about the hand shaking after the debate: McCain tapped Obama’s shoulder to introduce Cindy to him, and Obama quickly turned around with his hand out but didn’t know where she was, so McCain gestured towards Cindy so their hands could meet.  Remember, right after the debate they shook hands and did a man-hug thing, and Brokaw had to ask them to move?  If you watch the tape it’s pretty clear that McCain was not being a douche at that moment.

The “that one” thing was super weird though.

Comment #9: Amanduh  on  10/10  at  10:50 AM

I think education needs to be a number priority if Obama is elected.  Get the damn textbooks away from the Texas school system fundy-vetting system and teach our children well.

Fuck.  My son brought home a 3rd grade textbook that “explained” the meaning of each line of the Pledge of Allegiance.  “Under God” was defined as “Led by God”.

I crossed that out in his book and made damn sure he know that not a single person who founded our country nor truly loved her thought that any one particular God ran the place.  That America was founded by people running away from countries that claimed a particular God ran the place.

But kids nationwide are being taught that our country is “led by God”, and they mean the white male evangelical Christian God.

Just like in the second video where the people start chanting “USA USA” as if Obama and his supporters weren’t Americans.  If you think white and christian is American, then who are all those other people who live here and think they have a right to be represented?

I don’t think I can watch it anymore, but I want it covered.  I want it exposed.  I want to lance that damn boil and cleanse this wound once and for all.

You know what Mr. Country First never talks about?  Freedom.  Freedom to live as you wish.  Freedom to believe as you wish.  Freedom to live without fear, or, when frightened, to face it with courage and intelligence.  What happened to those American values of independence and freedom?

Apparently it’s better to scare people into voting white and warmongering all while destroying their ability to live anywhere outside of a company town.

Comment #10: Caren-Sun-blocking Creator of Animorphic Pancakes  on  10/10  at  10:53 AM

Silly Pam, don’t you know that parents teach their children values not through contact, care, and guidence, but through genetic osmosis? /snark

Comment #11: luzzleanne  on  10/10  at  10:55 AM

Sugar Ray, excuse me, but what the fuck are you talking about!?

Besides Michael Moore apparently being racist against white people, I don’t think you came near coherence once in that comment. Do Obama/Biden rallies resemble Black Panther meetings? If they do, that’s news to me and you should definitely get a video of it. If they don’t, then what the fuck are you bringing up a radical group from the 60’s? Do you know what fucking year it is?

Oh, and please enlighten us regarding our ignorance of the founding of our country. Because in my experience liberals understand the views of our founders far better than conservatives. The “maverick” McCain even insists the constitution sought to found a Christian nation, expect the founders forgot to actually write that part down and actually said the exact opposite whenever they got the chance.

Comment #17: Dr. Locrian  on  10/10  at  11:16 AM

Sugar Ray, we’ve eliminated the slavery part of our Constitution.  The rest of it is supposed to be about freedom to live and believe as you wish, without fear.

Do you deny that white men still have an undeserved privileged place in our society?

Or is it just fine and dandy to be teaching children that you can’t touch black people without gloves?

Do you really not see a difference in demanding equal treatment and opportunity for all people regardless of their origins versus despising people because of the color of their skin?  Or their gender?  Or their orientation?

Seriously, my friend, one is about actions; the other is about essence.

I don’t despise W and Cheney for being white and rich; I despise them for starting a war of choice against a country that didn’t attack us and was contained in a way that prevented them from harming us.  They and their cronies have profited.

I despise them b/c they are guilty of high crimes against the country.  For ripping the Constitution to shreds.  I despise Pelosi—female and Democratic—for taking impeachment off the table.

I despise them for reasons you can debate, and that in a reasonable debate, facts would prevail.  Lies would not be allowed to simply sit there as perfectly acceptable rebuttals.

These people hate Obama because he is black.  They hate him for being a ‘domestic terrorist’.  They hate him for being Muslim.  They hate him because he is named after his father, who wasn’t named John Sidney O’Bama.  Name and bloodlines.  Refuted lies.  Willful ignorance of the facts b/c it makes it easier to hide their racism.

Do you think the candidate of a major political party, a man who currently is polling votes from half your fellow citizens, a sitting US Senator is a terrorist?  Mindy Green of Ohio does, and she’s proud to sign her name to that.  How can you call that anything but gleeful hatred and ignorance?  She’s not disagreeing with policy choices.  She’s calling him a criminal and a traitor for no valid reason.

I think you need to go back and read up on who the Founding Fathers were, what they believed, and what they hoped the strong foundation they gave this country would do.  Cause it sure as hell wasn’t putting a specific religion in charge of the government nor was it abandoning habeus corpus and spying on its citizens.  They are spinning in their graves, and not because a black man or a woman has a chance to lead the country, but because of the overreaching actions of the Executive Branch.

I am amazed that anyone is actually surprised or shocked to see people acting like this. This IS America. Where has everyone been?

My one problem with Obama is that he’s always seemed to have a much rosier view of the American people than is warranted. We have a very vicious, spiteful dark side.  Obama’s rhetoric reflects a belief that if we just got together and realized how we all face a lot of the same things in life, we’d come away with a greater understanding of our common goals and interests. I am becoming convinced that this is not the case—we’re more of a cut-off-your-nose-to-spite-your-face sort of people. The Republicans, being more in touch with this mindset, know that it exists and know how to exploit it.

Do you think the candidate of a major political party, a man who currently is polling votes from half your fellow citizens, a sitting US Senator is a terrorist?  Mindy Green of Ohio does, and she’s proud to sign her name to that.

The most important thing we can do is hold these people to their statements. Remind them of the crazy stuff they said and don’t let them forget where they stood in the 2008 elections.

People like this were also around in 1932, just as they were in the European countries where they were successfully mobilized in support of fascist takeovers. Yet the US turned in a different direction. I’m a long way from losing hope that we will respond similarly to the current crisis. After all, so far the crisis has turned much of the electorate towards Obama, not against him, and that’s a damn good start.

I don’t think that America will take a fascist turn, but I do think that we’re going to have a contingent of people who are going to remain convinced that Obama represents a Communist/Muslim/terrorist takeover of the USA, and they’re not going to put that aside. My worry is that Obama’s strategy will be one of, “we can just explain to these people what the truth is, and they’ll realize that these are the best ideas,” whereas the right-wing, being a bit more in touch with the American dark side, will understand how careful exploitation of these dark public sentiments can be parlayed into undermining the Obama presidency and will pay off in electoral dividends.

Comment #27: Tyro  on  10/10  at  11:56 AM

I’ve always liked those reunion documentaries where veterans from the World War II get together and shake hands, making their personal acts of forgiveness and peace.

That generation was willing to forgive the survivors from Germany and Japan for a world war, but the American right will not forgive America for the 60s. “Hippies?” “Black Panthers?” No one but right-wing haters even remember them any more.

Hatred and resentment, simmering for forty years.

Comment #28: Berken  on  10/10  at  11:59 AM

Sugar Ray, your vision of America led to the deaths of 168 people in Oklahoma City, including 19 children, one of whom was only 3 months old.  I hope you’re proud of yourself for spreading enough hatred that people who think like you have started picking up guns and killing their “enemies,” like the little kids putting on a performance of “Annie” in that Unitarian church in Knoxville.

Tyro, my worry is that the Republicans are letting this genie out of the bottle without thinking about the probable consequences.  We’ve already had at least two shooting sprees of Unitarians and Democrats.  I don’t think the Republicans are going to be able to keep these people under sufficient control for electoral success, especially after this election.

Why does Fox have a box up with Ayers’ photo and the caption “domestic terrorist”?  Is that relevant to anything during the story, or do they just leave it up there all the time?

One of the main problems with tying Obama to people like Ayers and Rezko is that basically nobody knows who the hell they are.  And the election is in 3 weeks.  None of the other major media outlets seem to be jumping on that particular bandwagon.  So of course they’re going to saturate the wingnuts in any way they can.

Comment #35: The Opoponax  on  10/10  at  12:37 PM

I don’t think most of the wingnuts know who Ayres and (especially) Rezko are. They just know they’re supposed to say those names over and over. They’re really, really angry that the part of the campaign where it’s decided that the Democrat isn’t really an American at all hasn’t happened and isn’t likely to.

By the way, unless I’m in direct physical danger from any of these people, I am declaring a moratorium on the word “scary.” These people go to sleep at night with little boners because they think we think they’re scary. They’re stupid and un-American.

I couldn’t agree with this more. I entered into this campaign season thinking Obama didn’t have the taste for the fight or the strength to handle what was obviously going to be among the dirtiest campaigns in U.S. history. I’m pleased - hell, I’m ecstatic - that I was wrong.

The “say it to my face” line was a piece of genius. Here’s why: Obama’s polling, even in states that should be safe for McCain, has improved this week as the attacks get worse. The more McCain attacks, the worse McCain does. But by in effect daring McCain to go on the attack at the next debate, he puts McCain in an impossible position. McCain now has to press the attack at the next debate, which will turn off all but the base, hurt McCain in the polls, and strengthen the “McCain is angry” story, or not mention it, which will depress the base and strengthen the “McCain is erratic” story. Either way, Obama can prepare for it and be ready if the attack comes.

Except it isn’t.

Ahh yes. Right Wing Troll, 2008 Vintage. A very good year.

The retarded brilliance of SRR’s trolling is piquant, bracing. The hysterical, knuckle-biting fear of blacks and commies are the dominant tastes, but with subtle undertone of nostalgia for a time which never existed, and a rich, full aftertaste of “Michael Moore is Fat”-ness. The completely random, nonsensical references to native americans and the founding fathers lend the mixture a certain effervescence. Scents of earth, even, dare I say, of ass, in the nose. 72 out of 100.

Communist/Muslim/terrorist takeover of the USA

The fact that in their minds this is strung together as a logical, coherent set of ideas is very revelatory of the depths of their ignorance.  Wait, why did the CIA fund Bin Laden in the 70s/80s?  To fight whom?  Oh right.  The complete lack of knowledge about history or ideas is really stunning in a movement so based on nostalgia.  Though I guess it is nostalgia for a time that never was so it makes sense.

I do want to say—the MSM’s relationship to Fox seems quite different than in 2004 when they were so worried about being scooped by Fox that they would chase after any story on Fox no matter how manufactured.  This time it seems Fox is alone in at least some of its stupidity.  The other networks don’t seem to be banging the Ayers/Rezko drum (except to discuss the strategic merits) the same way they covered the Swift Boat crap.  Fox does seem to have lost some influence.  I hope this is some small solace in a sea of shit this election season.

And can Tony Rezko be a terrorist, too?  Just being a corrupt, convicted felon doesn’t seem scary enough anymore, and probably means he’s too close to being a Keating and thereby opens McCain up to counterpunches.

Tony was born in Syria.  That makes him dark and foreign enough to be a terrorist, right?  Just because his family are Catholics doesn’t mean he’s not Muslim!!!eleventy-one!  Syria!  Arab!  Muslim!  Terrorist!

I’m not quaking in my boots—if it’s my destiny to be shot to death or blown up by some fucktard, then so be it—but we shouldn’t underestimate the power of idiots and crazy people to make a whole lot of trouble if they decide to.  And the more you deliberately whip up the idiots and crazy people, the more likely it is that a few of them will try something stupid.

Scary people.  One caveat - that black guy had every right to tell the cameraman to f**k off after the cameraman asked “if you’re african american, then why are you voting for John McCain?”  in a chuckling, disbelieving voice.  That is a clown’s question.

Absolutely. I kinda think people are underestimating the danger, personally.

Put an Obama sign in your yard and find out how scary W. Bush Americans really are.

Ahh yes. Right Wing Troll, 2008 Vintage. A very good year.

What’s that expression, old wine in new bottles?  Only the Michael Moore reference places the comment in this century.  The rest of the steaming pile could have been dropped at any point since about 1967.

Damn straight tpx.

You could end up with democrats shaking their heads and muttering “whatta maroon” as they walk by.

Comment #53: atheist  on  10/10  at  04:16 PM

No, they’d mutter “What a moran.”

These “heartland” people see themselves the way that fundie Christians do: they’re the only ones who know the truth, and one or more will be moved to act on it.  I’ve worried pretty much continually since the beginning of his candidacy that some nut with a gun is going to try to take Obama out.  While the rest of the gullible sheep are drinking the love-one-another-and-get-along Koolaid, they know that behind all that togetherness is a secret agenda to turn the country over to .... someone.  They don’t know who, exactly (Soviets? Islamofascists? The Illuminati?), but it won’t be pretty.

Think of movies like Red Dawn - a small group who knows and fights the good-if-futile fight.  Think of fundies who kill “abortion doctors”.  Think of Timothy McVeigh.  These were/are people who think they’re the only ones not being deceived and have the duty to make a stand.  Don’t underestimate their determination, and don’t expect them to get with the program once Obama is president.

NobleExperiments, Fred Clark at Slacktivist addressed exactly what you’re saying today.  Like the rest of us, he has no solutions, but I think he has correctly diagnosed the problem.

It is really sad the indoctrination of children into these hateful views of other people. How is this - hating others for differences, provincialism, etc. - the Real, Authentic America, something to be emulated or insisted upon for proper citizenship and membership? I would be embarrassed if this were the Real, Authentic version of my country and am glad we have some so-called Elitists to espouse different values. Update: there is now same-sex marriage in Conn. and the GOP governor said she was caving re the ruling. Yay. Time for some more ¨Real Americans¨ to get their underwear in a bunch.

Who were the gay ones supposed to be?  Was this because of something they said, or were you stereotyping based on body-type?

Comment #58: Eileen  on  10/10  at  08:29 PM

I just was reading about supporters of public library Net filtering (yes, the Websense page that pops up when you want to read about teh gay Gay Pride parade with half-naked guys): people so afraid of pornography that they won’t have the Internet in their homes.

It’s no wonder they’re afraid of porn, since they are so credulous as to believe the spurious and hateful e-mails perpetually forwarded from hard-right supporters.

The good people of small town midwest America will not be the ruination of this great country.  That task falls to freaks and of this ilk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7Ix8tbzgfI

MikeEss, your words may prove to be prophetic-

“This is how America dies — not with a bang , but whimpering under a massive putrid pile of….”

Yes, the increasing belligerence and violent rhetoric of some in the right is distressing, but I honestly can’t watch this video without my first reaction being “Wow, what a total jerk,” referring to the questioner. Maybe this is my Midwesterner coming out, but one simply doesn’t get in other people’s faces like that. There were people who asked not to answer questions and not to be filmed, and this guy puts them on the internet either which way? His questioning was belligerent and infantile. I’m disappointed.

M

I got some of that too. The camera guy was being kind of a jerk and I noticed it too. I do think however that much of what the people there said in return was pretty scary.

So, there’s an aspect of the people in the line responding to camera guy as I might respond to a troll, and unfortunately that does tend to throw some of what he videoed into doubt. I still think there’s enough in there that’s unusually bitter and mean to cause reasonable fear, however.
