Next entry: Netroots Attack! Previous entry: Explanations Are In Order

Messing With Brotherzoid

The Texas GOP has launched one of the dickiest attack ads imaginable.  A British newspaper tracked down one of Barack Obama’s half brothers, who it contended was living in awful, destitute squalor.  CNN interviewed the half-brother who in turn flatly refused his half-sibling’s help:

But reports surfaced in the past few days, springing from an Italian Vanity Fair article saying George Obama is living in a shack and “earning less than a dollar a day.”

The reports left him angry.

“I was brought up well. I live well even now,” he said. “The magazines, they have exaggerated everything.

“I think I kind of like it here. There are some challenges, but maybe it is just like where you come from, there are the same challenges,” Obama said.

Obama, who is in his mid-20s, is learning to become a mechanic and is active in youth groups in Huruma. He said he tries to help the community as much as he can.

At least one of his neighbors feels that perhaps the candidate should help the brother.

“I would like Obama to visit his brother to see how he is living, to improve his way of life,” said Emelda Negei, who runs a small dispensary near Obama’s house.

But George Obama will have none of it. He draws inspiration from his famous half-brother. He acknowledges that he is biased but said he knows that his half-brother will be the next president.

The Texas GOP, stepping in with the full force of patronizing assholism (the best kind), attacks Barack Obama for not helping his brother…because John McCain was a POW.

If this election was on the verge of awesome before, it flung itself full-force into awesomeland today, via Dickway Lane.

the texas GOP wasn’t even willing to get their own domain, they decided to use a tinyurl?

I’m impressed they got the voiceover artist from the Wendy’s radio ads, myself.

If you’re earning less than US$200k a year and living in a home under 2500sqf, in Vanity Fair‘s view (and, more quietly, the Texas GOP leadership’s view) you might just as well be earning less than a dollar a day and living in a shack. And if that’s your situation, despite their public claims neither Vanity Fair nor the Texas GOP will give a rat’s arse about you—unless you have a celebrity relative.

Hell, according to McCain $4 million/year is “middle class”.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder for John McCain is doing to help his disabled ex-wife that he left to marry Cindy a month after he was divorced from her?

Comment #5: shaz  on  08/25  at  10:47 AM

yeah, Chicago Sun-Times, the progressive paper in town (it said so, so it must be true) put a color picture of George and this article on the FRONT PAGE.  Because it’s news. 9-)

All it says to me is that Barack Sr. catted around a lot and that living conditions in the US are generally much much better.

Barack has met this man once, and he’s practically young enough to be Barack’s son.  I fail to see how his welfare is Barack’s responsibility, especially since George doesn’t want his half-brother’s help.

But if you can smear Barack as an unfeeling elite, why not?

Yeah, that’s pretty low, but I don’t know if it qualifies to be one of the “dickiest.”.

If Obama was helping these family members, the stories would then be trumpeting how he was bankrolling radical muslim family members bent on destroying America.

This is a no-win situation.

If it’s time to help one’s half sibling, when will Cindy share her father’s beer inheritance with her half sisters Kathy and Dixie? She hasn’t even spoken to Kathy since their dad’s funeral, when she received a token $10K.

Now, shaz, you have to go easy on McCain because he was a POW for over 5 years. You can’t imagine how hard that was on him and his wife—waiting faithfully, day after day, wondering if he’d ever be released, wondering if he were really still alive, not to mention the difficulty of adjusting after he got home—disabled, no less. You just can’t question McCain’s courage and commitment—or his wife’s…er, ex-wife…er…I mean…

I’m sorry, what was the question again?

Another “Dammed if you do…” situation.
Let’s say Barack Obama did do some sort of gesture of aid. From there he would have been attacked as either
a) Giving an example of a Marxian “redistribution of wealth from the haves to help the have-nots”
b) A blatant example of exploiting his family for political gain. (Or politicization or something..)
c) Something about illegal immigrants. (At this point logic has completely jumped the rails of course.)
d) Proof the he is a secret Muslim.

Instead we have a half-brother who is exhibiting a perfect example of conservative “success by my own actions” mindset, and this is somehow “scary” for Democrats.

Weirdness abounds.

I gotta say that an ad telling someone to step in and give their brother money is pretty dickish.

The article I read suggested that he’s actually helping her out a lot.  Not that he talks to her or visits her or anything, but he pays some of the bills and she’s willing to tell reporters who track her down how grateful she is and that she’s not angry with him for being an asshole at all.

I don’t even know where to start with this shit:

Now Obama is responsible for the living standard in Kenya?

Maybe if George would just convert to Christianity, one of those fancy repub aid organizations could teach him something useful and lucrative.  Like how to wear shoes and not sit on the floor.

Just more of the ridiculously irresponsible approach of the aid industry in Africa and the third world.  What an illogical misuse of shoddy information.  George’s place looks like every other house I saw in Kenya, or Africa for that matter, unless you’re talking about government workers or white aid workers.  Sadly, we untraveled Americans don’t understand that levels of poverty are relative.

And the irony:  it is godly to give to those lowly, subhuman, poor foreigners.  But if you’re poor or disadvantaged here in the US, you better suck it up, get a job, boot straps….

I had a feeling that Obama’s father’s side of the family would be used against him like this.

If everybody in that family isn’t living in western-style luxury, Obama is heartless and doesn’t give a damn about anyone.

If everybody in that family is living in western-style luxury, Obama is going to steal our money and send it to Kenya.

Honestly, he really can’t win.  And what it ultimately boils down to is another kind of “you’re not a Real American” attack.

If they are so concerned about Bar’s bro’s circumstances, maybe they should give him one of McCains homes.

Comment #16: bartkid  on  08/25  at  11:42 AM

Why do the Republicans care?  He’s has enough of a standard of living to provide for “loose shoes and a warm place to shit” (google Earl Butz, a fine Republican of the Nixon Era).

Probably just about as much as Cindy McCain has ever done for her half-sister - absolutely nothing after she had her written out of the will.

Comment #18: Chet  on  08/25  at  12:12 PM

I’m not sure I’d go so far as to actually blame Cindy for the fact that her father didn’t dole out inheritances more fairly.  Of course, it would have been nice of her to share, and people with glass houses shouldn’t throw accusations of financial selfishness (though I realize this ad was made by the TX Republican party and not endorsed by the McCains).  But I think accusing her of “having her sisters written out of the will” is pretty off base.

I think what riles me most about this is the fact that, if Barack is a good person at all, this is something he’s probably had to work out for himself, and it’s sort of a lose-lose situation.  He has a huge family back in Kenya and an incredibly prosperous life even by American standards.  From his book at least, he really seems to care about his Kenyan family.

But he probably knows that he can’t help everyone, and it isn’t worth bankrupting his own family to try to get dozens of people he doesn’t know very well a slightly more affluent life in the interest of altruism or whatever.  From discussions with people in intercultural marriages, or where one partner is a first or second generation immigrant with a lot of family still in the “old country”, this is a common issue that has to be dealt with—how much help do you give the family back “home”?  The fact that it’s going to be used as political ammo probably doesn’t make it any easier.

I believe she gets a 1 cent donation every time his supporters mention he was a POW.

Comment #20: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  08/25  at  04:01 PM

Carol McCain’s medical bills are paid for.  While Juan Noriega was a POW, she had the audacity to be in a near fatal car accident tht shattered her legs and left her 4 inches shorter.

How dare she not be modelesque and willing to care for him!  He was a POW!

So he catted around and found Cindy.  They promise to pay for her endless surgeries and the medical treatment she will need for the rest of her life.  Since she’s uninsurable now, that’s a pretty big carrot for the McCain’s to dangle, and she never says anything bad about the Maverick.

They just wanted a way to call Obama an irresponsible brotha.

Comment #22: Loneoak  on  08/25  at  05:06 PM

The really dickish bit—other than using someone’s image without his permission and against his own expressed feelings about the situation—is that this clearly is just a way to point out that BY THE WAY, Obama is black.  And a ferriner.  And I don’t think they had much intention of airing this (much).  Instead, make an assholish ad, get attention, get your ad shown and discussed for free.  Racism on the cheap.

It is interesting that Cindy has referred to herself as an only child.  But I don’t think it is a campaign issue.  I guess the ways of the rich are impossible for those of us without trust funds.

Comment #23: pennylane  on  08/25  at  06:05 PM

Pennylane, I completely agree with you that Cindy McCain’s siblings are unimportant in the election.  Its a shame that we on the left are so ethical!  The right will run at anything, like Obama’s brother or, well, anything really.  And then there’s the rest of the left that is so busy criticizing Obama and so bored by McCain that they create enough chatter to start some PUMA ruckus or somesuch.
