Michael Barone: Why Did The Kennedys Love Getting Shot So Much?

imageMichael Barone is a liar.

No, let me take that back.  Michael Barone offends (and impresses) liars with his commitment to dishonesty.  He is a man so committed to dishonesty that it is very likely he is actually the Lindbergh Baby, that is how much I doubt his accounting of his biography in light of the fact that he lies all the goddamn time.

Today, he writes about the liberal stifling of dissent, which, I think, you have to write on at least three times a year if you’re going to remain in good standing with the Conservative Commentariat Association.  It has all the usual touchpoints: calling racists racist is the most terrible thing of all, liberals are terrible elitists who can handle nothing else except discussing Heidegger over yerba matte…you know, everything you normally hear when your conservative uncle makes fun of you for owning a documentary that didn’t come with a subscription to Sports Illustrated.  But they, there’s the point at which Barone just goes full-bore into lying about acts of violence, which has never, ever been a tactic used by radical groups to blame the targets of their wrath for the ills that befall them.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has warned us that there’s a danger that intense rhetoric can provoke violence, and no decent person wants to see harm come to our president or other leaders. But it’s interesting that the two most violent incidents at this summer’s town hall meetings came when a union thug beat up a 65-year-old black conservative in Missouri and when a liberal protester bit off part of a man’s finger in California.

These incidents don’t justify a conclusion that all liberals are violent. But they are more evidence that American liberals, unused to hearing dissent, have an impulse to shut it down.

The first incident he’s talking about is Kenneth Gladney’s brutal slapfight and tripping match with a half-blind minister.  I would point out how, ultimately, we are all Kenneth Gladney, but his attorney forgot to pay the bills, so…never mind.  The Gladney matter has been handled with hilarious ineptitude by David Brown, Gladney’s attorney/mouthpiece/deadbeat fame-whore hanger-on.  Gladney has pursued no suit against the SEIU as of today, has, as far as I’ve found, pressed no charges, and has pretty much done nothing except do a poor man’s Joe the Plumber impersonation…which I didn’t think was humanly possible.

The second incident involves a man who ended up biting off an assailant’s finger after being punched repeatedly in the face.  You could look upon this as an incident of an insane liberal protester savaging the all-American digits of an innocent man or, alternately, you could look at it as someone defending themselves from an assault.  I suppose it all depends on whether or not your conception of “facts” includes things that happen before conservatives are inconvenienced.

At the end of the day, this isn’t just about Barone being a hack among hacks.  It’s about a violent populist movement’s efforts to justify its own acts of real or implied violence by manufacturing grievances against its target population.  Yes, that teabagger should probably have his finger, but it would have helped if he hadn’t been ramming it in another person’s face in an effort to hurt him.  Kenneth Gladney probably has some boo-boos, but it’s awfully telling that he has a full PR machine, complete with huckster “agent”, before he ever had charges filed against his alleged assailants.  Barone is alleging liberal violence here not because any unjustified liberal violence actually happened, but because it helps advance the point that any and all resistance to the evils of liberalism is preemptively and preventatively justified.  When someone gets shot, it won’t be because some nutcase brought a gun to an event and opened fire against an innocent person, it’s because they were trying to prevent the inevitable and terrible harm that liberalism would visit upon them, like when Bill Clinton had Vince Foster killed or when Obama sent out his Youth to pummel white children on school buses.

You can ask Dr. Tiller’s family where that line of thought leads, if you’d like.

It is always all about projection with these people

I think conservatives fool themselves into thinking that Liberals belief in non-violence and truth means they claim to be always honest and never use force.  How surprised and (more) enraged they are when Libs kick ‘em in the nuts, metaphorically or literally.  “No Fair!” they scream, “it’s not in teh RULES! Peaceniks are supposed to be whimps!  If you believe in Racial equality you CAN’T call others Racists! Waaah!”

Boo-Hoo-Hoo!  Or as the bully on Simpsons says HA-ha!

Comment #2: Kwillow  on  09/21  at  04:34 PM

Step by step, we “left-of-the-left” are pushing them into doing what they have to do to control us.

They try to warn us that there will be consequences, but we just won’t listen.  They warned us about Obama, but we voted for him anyway, they warned us to leave Wall Street alone and let the auto co’s die, but we still demand accountability for Wall Street and salvation for GM, they brought their unloaded guns to townhalls, trying to make us understand we were playing with fire, but still we kept on, demanding healthcare,  demanding we not spend money on missile shields in Eastern Europe, demanding the Government step up and fix the broken economy, and worst of all, continuing to not reject ACORN and everything connected to it.  We even go so far as to demand autonomy over our own bodies!

So when the violence starts, and it will start, we will have no one to blame but ourselves.

Why won’t we listen to them before it’s too late?...

Comment #3: MikeEss  on  09/21  at  04:44 PM

I’m going to make a prediction here - within a year, there will be wingnuts wearing masks to these protests.  supposedly this will be to “protect” themseleves from identification by violent liberals or tehjackbooted forces of Obamapression; in actuality it will be a way to keep the hysteria whipped up and another way for these dickless wonders to feel manly.  Gendered insult chosen deliberately.

Comment #4: Phoenician in a time of Romans  on  09/21  at  04:45 PM

At the end of the day, this isn’t just about Barone being a hack among hacks.

It really is, though, because people like him do set the tone for professional discourse within the profession of journalism. He (along with Tweety, Chyron Cokie, Stephanopoulos the Empty Suit, and the late Tim Russert) the epitome of the “serious” Beltway insider pundit who’s spent that past 20 years granting general-interest news outlets license to give violent and hateful ignoramiequal standing with the reality-based community

And Barone does it by pontificating about things like “objective journalism,” “comity,” and “First Amendment Rights.” I put all those items in quotes because Barone misinterprets them, and not by accident. While he wouldn’t be caught dead in the company of these Know-Nothings any more than those liberal elitists he condemns would, he’s happy to give the mouth-breathers a veneer of credibility he knows they don’t deserve in order to get them onto air and into print.

As to motive, some of it is typical neoCon manipulation and GOP cynicism, but a larger part of it is that the DC Villagers are addicted to political controversy and chaos. As highfalutin’ as his rhetoric is, Barone is, deep down, just as much of a sensationalist as the crime reporter on Action (Action! ACTION!) News.

Also, it’s not as if the President has received numerous death threats or anyone has shot a doctor in church because he works at a clinic that preforms abortions. That’s just smears against Conservatives. we all know that abortion doctor shot himself and Obama probably texted those death threats on his blackberry.

Peaceniks are supposed to be whimps!  If you believe in Racial equality you CAN’T call others Racists! Waaah!”

Don’t forget “If you are tolerant, you have to tolerate my intolerance, or else YOU are intolerant!”

And, yeah, jefft452, liberals believe in using intelligence, reason, and diplomacy, but when we decide that war really is the only option, we bring a can of whup-ass and town burning. Total war was our idea, after all, executed by Sherman, Sheridan, and Grant.  Nuke-dropper HST was a Democrat, after all.

We don’t go to war b/c we look good in flight suits or b/c we want to make a fortune stealing $$$ from the Treasury and stealing oil fields.  We go to war b/c intelligence, reason, and diplomacy fail.

“We don’t go to war b/c we look good in flight suits”

correct, I wasnt just being snarky (ok, i was, but i’d like to expand)

Why did South Carolina think that they could lob artillery shells at a US Army installation and it wouldnt end badly for them? Because they really believed in they’re own man for man martial superority

leaving aside the fact that being able to repair a RR bridge is a more important war winning skill then being able to lead a cavalry charge, the entire pre-war myth of the superior fighting ability of the southern cavalier was based entirely on the fact they they played dress-up in faux military uniforms and called each other Colonel

Just like todays wingnuts are fond of cammo fatagues means that they are are all John Waynes or Rambos

Comment #13: jefft452  on  09/21  at  08:45 PM

Shorter NBarnes:  Democrats are children taught to murder for fun and profit.

Ender Wiggin didn’t kill Bonzo Madrid for fun or profit. He did it in self defense.

I think what NBarnes is going for is to say that if you back liberals into a corner with your threats, we will kill your ass hard.

Steve Gilliard wrote a great piece on fighting liberalism that always like to link when this topic comes up. An excerpt:

It was the liberals who opposed the Nazis while the conservatives were plotting to get their brown shirts or fund Hitler. It was the liberals who warned about Spain and fought there, who joined the RAF to fight the Germans, who brought democracy to Germany and Japan. Let us not forget it was the conservatives who opposed defending America until the Germans sank our ships. They would have done nothing as Britain came under Nazi control. It was they who supported Joe McCarthy and his baseless, drink fueled claims.

Without liberals, there would be no modern America, just a Nazi sattlelite state. Liberals weak on defense? Liberals created America’s defense. The conservatives only need vets at election time.

It is time to stop looking for an accomodation with the right. They want none for us. They want to win, at any price. So, you have a choice: be a fighting liberal or sit quietly. I know what I am, what are you?

Comment #15: Gracchus.  on  09/21  at  10:36 PM

For this type of conservative, war and violence are performance art and the chosen enemy isn’t really real, they are simply the necessary excuse and props for the performance.  There aren’t supposed to be any consequences for the main performers, only for the extras.  Putting on a good show and following the rules is *almost* more important than the outcome, and the show is fun, so it doesn’t matter how long it lasts.

Comment #16: Theadosia  on  09/21  at  11:08 PM

liberals are terrible elitists

Well, you’ve got to admit that we don’t have as much practice as Ronald Reagan or George W. Bush. The Dubyanomic tax cuts were the most elitist act of the past 20 years.

Comment #17: Judge Moonbox  on  09/21  at  11:10 PM

Not to mention pretty much all the scientists who invented the thing (except that ignorant fuck Teller).

Hmmmm…. No I don’t think so
While real rebels and dissidents do this in 3rd world countries to avoid being known to the security forces, it don’t really fit into the wingnut mythos

I think it does. See yesterdays article on populism vs. randianism. They think they’re rebels. See also the black helicopter crowd.

Comment #22: Matty  on  09/22  at  03:20 AM

“They think they’re rebels”

yeah, but they think that theyre heroic rebels, and that the people secretly support them

they make a big deal about concealed carry permits, but when they bring a gun to a town hall meeting they want it to be seen

Comment #23: jefft452  on  09/22  at  03:43 AM

Yeah, but conservatives whine like mad when they get nailed for…bringing guns to a town hall meeting. It’s all about blaming somebody else and having no consequences fall on them. They don’t fight in the wars they start, they attack unarmed people. They’re cowards. Wearing masks fits them perfectly.

Comment #24: ginmar  on  09/22  at  06:20 AM

Rightists need to learn that my good will does not originate from compulsion, psychological, moral or otherwise.  I am my own free agent, and I appraise things as I see fit.

Comment #29: Aaron  on  09/22  at  10:14 AM

Goodness, Aaron, you do realize that the South is currently part of the US, right? Even historically, this isn’t a matter of us vs. the, it is a matter of either us vs. us, or (since none of us were alive then), them vs them.

You do know that, right? Right?

Comment #30: Lymis  on  09/22  at  11:25 AM

“Goodness, Aaron, you do realize that the South is currently part of the US, right?”

True, but it’s not for lack of trying to leave on the South’s part.  And apparently there are still a lot of Southerners who’d leave in a heartbeat if they could do it without bringing mass destruction…

Comment #31: MikeEss  on  09/22  at  11:32 AM

Well sure, they make a lot of noise about wanting out of the Union but I don’t believe for a minute that they really want off the federal gravy train.

“jefft452, if the Confederacy had nothing but poor soldiers and worse generals, how come it took y’all half a decade to put us down?”

It takes time to conquer and occupy a large geographic area, even more so before the airplane and internal combustion engine

that said, despite the “long hard slog” in north VA, New Orleans held out for what, a half hour or so?

Seeing as it controlled the mouth of the Miss. river and therefore the most strategically important spot in north America you’d think it would count for something, no?

within a year the entire river was in federal control (the batteries at Vicksburg couldn’t actually depress enough to hit ships in the river, something that the confed officers didn’t know because they didn’t bother themselves with trivial technical details like a bunch of “mechanics and mud-sills”)

Comment #33: jefft452  on  09/22  at  01:31 PM

For that matter, for a the flack McClellen gets for failing to advance on the James river peninsula in 62, he was ON the James river peninsula, and bobby Lee, stonewall Jackson & jeb Stuart combined couldn’t do crap about it

You’d think after two subsequent failures in Vietnam and Iraq of the best military money can buy against under trained and under equipped defenders, somebody wouldn’t be dumb enough to ask this question.

Comment #35: BlackBloc  on  09/22  at  03:37 PM

What Alara said in #14.  I’m on your side, Caren.  Sorry to be so easily misunderstood, it wasn’t my intent.  Ender’s a basically nice guy, but you really (really!) shouldn’t push him based on that theory that just because he’s an empathy-having decent person, he’s incapable of defending himself or those he’s close to.

Comment #36: NBarnes  on  09/22  at  03:58 PM

I am kinda of the opinion that liberals are peacenik wimps. The existence of wingnuts seems like a QED for this.
