Mid-afternoon uber-60s music break

Music

The Vanilla Fudge drenching “You Keep Me Hanging On” in super-psychedelia.  This may be the most 60s video I’ve ever seen.

Thanks to Nancy for sending this my way.

Hey, a post that doesn’t subtly or not-so-subtly bash teachers. Cool.

That’s a pretty far out video, by the by.

Crap. I wanted to snidely take people to task for snide remarks on my profession (teacher) and I use a double negative. In truth, the mistake is due to my pathetic need to be the first commenter. Sad.

...now, imagine what it would have been like to see that as an 8, 10, or 12-year old.  And realize it wasn’t that far out of the mainstream.

The ‘60s were pretty freaky, even for those of us who were not old enough to be drafted or go to Wooodstock…

BTW, there are several films that capture some of the weirdness of the era (for those who aren’t old enough to have lived through it) and this is one of my favorites...

Yes, we’re out to get teachers. Your strawman is very straw-y today.  I wasn’t aware there was no such thing as a school official who got off on petty tyranny.  Nor would I immediately assume that someone who creates strawmen so they can overreact would be inclined to fall on the “petty tyrant” side of the line than “genuinely interested in the well-being of children” side.

Sweet!  I have this album (it’s from Vanilla Fudge’s self-titled debut), but didn’t know there was video as well.  The album itself is fantastic; several Beatles covers (notably ‘Eleanor Rigby’) and a great rendition of ‘Bang Bang’.

What’s rather amazing about the vid is that it’s live—not mimed. That was SOP in them days. Kudos to the sound-folks who tamed all them transients and put out a listenable live show. Not an easy job, with mid-Sixties PA and mixing gear.

Oh, and—fabulous bass-work.

and this is one of my favorites…

Now you see I’m smiling
Back to juvenile-ing
I learnt her lesson
“In Like Flint” and styling
All the world is neatly curled around my littlest finger

She said she’s burning with optimism’s flames….

Here’s another vid of them performing the same song on the Ed Sullivan Show - note the insane graphics on the panels, and the awesomely impassioned vocal performances all around:

Amon Düül II blowing everyone’s mind with Eye-Shaking King, probably sometime in 1970/71. I cen’t believe stuff like this use to make it onto regular television.

Also, the LA Times is reporting that Michael Jackson is dead.

That is one Cheese-tastic video.  I love that the dancing girls weren’t doing the same dance for the most part, and couldn’t find the beat if they tripped over it.

Vanilla Fudge’s version of “Season of the Witch” is pretty bad ass as well.

A better(or at least more overtly satirical movie) also with James Coburn from that time is this one:

The widescreen cinematography was by William A. Fraker, and Lalo Schifrin provided the film’s musical score. The film has elements of political satire and science fiction, and resembles many of the spy spoofs that proliferated in the mid-60s in the wake of the James Bond phenomenon, including Coburn’s Our Man Flint and In Like Flint.

I dropped in on friends watching the Dick Clark show in the general era when this was made.

The Beatles’ Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever video, which he might have just shown, was the current rage.  Dick Clark opined that they’d probably done all they could with music videos.

I guess he thought they’d just fade away.

That bass player’s musical prowess is surpassed only by his fashion genius.

One of my two favoritest Motown covers. The other is the SoftCell Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go? combo.

Here’s an interesting psychedelic video, also done live.
