Minor glimmer of hope

Front page this morning of CNN and MSNBC:

”>

ABC News is still devoting precious big box space to the Edwards nonsense, and of course, so is Fox News.  But so far, other places are remembering the difference between news and gossip.

I was at the gym this morning and Fox News was talking about the economy and, like puppies, and CNN was interviewing Matthew McConnaughy about his girlfriend’s birth story and placenta and all that.

I didn’t see one news story on Georgia, or Beijing in the 30 minutes I paid attention to the news.

God, it shows how pathetic your fixation with Edwards is when you find a “glimmer of hope” in the murder of an American at the Olympics, and in declarations of war.

Give up the ghost. John Edwards is Drew Peterson for the weekend! By the way, gossip is more along the lines of “John Edwards says he saw aliens in the soup last night.” This is news.

Things were different when some at this site was gossiping about Larry Craig…

Gossiping about Larry

Thank God Georgia never got in NATO. We’d be looking at WWIII then.

Tell me again why NATO expansion is such a good idea?

Comment #4: Ben D.  on  08/09  at  11:28 AM

Oy.  What friends we have this morning.

Comment #5: idiosynchronic  on  08/09  at  11:46 AM

Is it worth pointing out that the glimmer of hope is not about the the murder of an American or the prospects of war but about the fact that some news organizations are able to identify which stories are important and which stories are filler? No. Didn’t think so.

Comment #6: Dweeze  on  08/09  at  12:06 PM

CNN has also devoted a ridiculous amount of time to this story. They keep reading Elizabeths statement and ignoring the part where she asks for no sensationalism. It is disgusting. They alternate between portraying her as a strong woman and poor victim that got duped. I cannot understand why they refuse to respect this families privacy. Why does profit always come before human decency?

Tell me, why is NATO a good idea at all?

I want Norway out of NATO, and our forces out of Afghanistan immediately. The Swedes seem to manage just fine without NATO. All our membership has ever given us, is an obligation to fight for American imperialism.

We may be stuck in NATO until our temporary system of social democracy is ready to be replaced by real socialism through the revolution. But after that, we will never again take part in any military conflict.

Comment #8: Torgrim  on  08/09  at  12:35 PM

Torgrim-

It was a good idea in the environment of the Cold War. It has outlived its usefulness now that we’re in a multi-polar world.

Comment #9: Ben D.  on  08/09  at  12:39 PM

Torgrim:

I sincerely hope you get what you want!

There’s no question in my mind that Edwards chose the day before the Olympics opened to go on Nightline so that the story would die quickly, and it will work, because no matter how much Fox News wants to keep this alive, the Olympics will suck the oxygen out of everything else for the next couple of weeks. That’s no doubt why Obama chose this time to go on vacation.

And by the way, I’d vote for Edwards again in a second, even given this news.

Comment #11: Incertus, Nacho Daddy  on  08/09  at  12:48 PM

I would agree it was gossip when the National Enquirer was claiming Edwards fathered a love child.  However, now that he’s admitted having an affair, the fact that he used PAC money as hush funds for Hunter and that he repeatedly lied to the public about that is newsworthy.  In doing so, he demonstrated that he is willing to stoop to corruption of his values and the campaign finance system.  I agree there should be mentions of the fact that McCain slept around on his first wife—with Cindy and other women—after he returned from Vietnam to balance out this coverage.  Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

Comment #12: TruValu  on  08/09  at  01:21 PM

Foucault, that’s a really unfair characterization.  Glimmer of hope=media shows real news.  Which is, admittedly, usually bad news.

Comment #13: Amanda Marcotte  on  08/09  at  01:22 PM

Okay, you’re right. Cheap shot.

I’m reveling in this Edwards thing a little too much. I do find it sad that Elizabeth Edwards has to put up with these reporters and the exorbitant attention all weekend when that is probably the last thing she needs right now. If I lived at the Edwards abode, I would probably set a skunk loose in the driveway right about now.

But the fascination with him and his tawdry behavior is only par for the course. It happens all the time when someone in politics lets the snake go wandering out of his pants. I just wish a woman could set off a a scandal like this once in a while, but then I realize that most women are WAY too smart to destroy their careers and take down their families because they want to get laid.

Comment #14: Foucault  on  08/09  at  01:52 PM

That you’re reveling in it at all says a lot about you, and it’s not very flattering.

Oh please asshat, tell it to the MSM. Tell it to someone who cares and lay off the Nachos piggy.

Comment #18: Foucault  on  08/09  at  02:21 PM

Lord. Edwards is SO yesterday.

I’d rather concentrate on actual candidates. I don’t care greatly about multiple marriages, but I do care about fair play and decorum and values. In his marital history, McCain did not act like a gentleman who has consideration for others, but as a selfish man who didn’t care about humiliating others. This is all in line with his well known short fuse and unrestrained potty mouth - he doesn’t strike me as able to represent the USA in face-to-face private and public international negotiations without being the Ugly American. We’ve had 8 years of our president playing the fool. I’d like to see some dignity and class in the White House.

Comment #19: NancyP  on  08/09  at  02:23 PM

The cable news networks apparently specialize in infotainment. When I last watched CNN, at a chain taqueria, the news was all about the legal troubles and jail experiences of Hulk Hogan’s son. Some modern equivalent of the sob sister news writer was going on and on about something or other. In the real news, Hulk Hogan’s son’s troubles do not show up on the radar.

Given that politicians regularly have sex and even produce offspring with women they’re not married to—John McCain with Cindy, Gavin Newsom with his chief of staff’s wife, Willie Brown with his girlfriend, Bill Clinton with Monica, Jesse Jackson (sr.) with someone I forget—I cannot single out John Edwards. Further, while his having an affair sounds heartless, was Edwards supposed to remain celibate during his wife’s illness? Or simply whack it to online porn? I believe chemotherapy takes away one’s sex drive.

Like the UN itself, NATO is an artifact of both WW II and WW I. The US got tired of being called in to participate in Europe’s wars long after they started, resulting in tens of thousands of dead Americans, with no discernible benefit to the US itself. NATO allows the US to maintain a rapid response force in Europe to cover the next time Europeans start invading each other after some Serb (for example) makes trouble. Are Europeans grown up enough to manage their own affairs without killing each other? Given that Russia is currently invading Georgia, probably not.

Thank God. Can we please focus on news that is actually news?? Kudos to MSNBC and CNN….for the time being!

A dude at Slate has just come out and done a refreshing and enjoyable contrarian piece (for realz!) about how this is good for Democrats, because McCain has more to fear from infidelity becoming an issue than Obama does.

Yes.  Someone who is struggling to get through a life-threatening illness by enduring a life-threatening, life-sucking treatment does not deserve to be abandoned and lied to by the person they love and need for support.  When your life partner has cancer, IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU.  Suck it up and be a partner, asshat.

actually a part of me has been thinking the same basic thing, i can’t help but think edwards’ timing in his admission had less to do with the olympics and more to do with jamming up the MSM mccain lovefest at least for a minute. by the time all the “journalists” get back on track they’ll have forgotten what bullshit made up meme they were tring to push before the scandal broke. like when you wave two toys at your dog at once and then s/he can’t decide which to play with, or for the cat people, how you can distract a cat with something as simple as a flashlight aimed at a wall.

Oh boy, check this out.

It seems Georgia joined our little “coalition” in Iraq for the express purpose of getting us to pay to upgrade their military so they could conduct a war against Russia.

“The cable news networks apparently specialize in infotainment.”

Well yeah.  And this is not a new revelation.  And it’s not limited to “cable news” either.

Everything on TV is entertainment, and it is only offered to get us to watch and (hopefully) absorb some sponsor’s message.  If you manage to gain anything beyond filling some of your time between birth and death, that’s gravy on the plate.

(Blogs are really entertainment too, so are newspapers, and most books.  I’ve often believed that the most important human need — after sex, food, sleep — is for entertainment…)

Entertainment does not automatically mean bad.  But when consuming entertainment products, you must take into account that there are multiple agendas being followed simultaneously in order to have a context for evaluating what you’re receiving…

Comment #26: MikeEss  on  08/09  at  06:05 PM

Someone who is struggling ... does not deserve to be abandoned and lied to by the person they love and need for support.

Abandonment is hardly an issue: Even the most devoted caregiver needs and deserves respite, for her/his own emotional and physical health. Who was available to support the supportive husband? The children are too young to shoulder such a burden. Further, telling your invalid wife you’re having an affair would hardly be a kindness.

Comment #27: Hector B.  on  08/09  at  06:25 PM

Nice attempt at justifying being a selfish, lying cheat, Hector B.  If there is a Mrs. or Mr. Hector B, they have my deepest sympathies.

More newsworthy than a shooting war between two of our allies?

I mean, I’m as fascinated as anyone to find out where Edwards has been sticking his dick, but I think it’s slightly more important that hundreds of people are dying.
